Alloy of course, on my canyon neuron I think its a bit more stable through the rough stuff because of the weight

I have a carbon enduro bike, very stiff relatively light to the size of a bike, and fast💨. I also have a alloy hardtail and it's soooo fun to ride. It's a matter of personal requirements I believe. If you want a fast high tech frame then get the carbon bike but you will be amazed how affordable and fun the new allow bikes are🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️

If you must restrict how many subjects are broached please use a rotation method.
I for one love listening to your fast and sometimes wandering monologue. Touching or focusing on seemingly random objects and subjects is great and in keeping with normal banter. Please don't reduce below thirty minutes as it would undoubtedly feel too rushed. And don't be put off extending said duration, we're all ears!
Most of my mates listen to you, they subscribed because of you.
    Great content.

Love the show! I think one of the biggest things that has been missing in the last year is bike checks.
You are all constantly getting new bikes. It would be great to see how you and the team set up each bike. Perhaps 2-minute 'presenter bike checks' once a week?

  • @raysoares9014

Bike Cave my fav too!!! Would love to see a weekly series on bikes caves, and then possibly focusing in on special or certain features of the cave in each episode. Can include Pain (training) caves as the workshop often doubles as a training room.

I have a Merida Big 9 TFS 300 mountain bike and I love it. I bought it about 9 years ago. I bought it because it was a hard tail and I could put a rack on the back as I was going to use it for commuting to/from work and riding to get groceries, etc. The frame is alloy and I think the wheel rims are too. When I bought the bike, it was a heavy weight @ 9kg all up ready to ride, if I remember correctly. I added a pannier rack, 2 pannier bags and a Basket Buddy expanded mesh basket with a fitted cooler bag on the rack. The pannier bag/basket combo holds enough groceries to last me 2-4 weeks. And, during party time, the basket can hold a box of 30 cans of beer and each pannier bag can easily hold 2 x 4 litre wine casks or 2 x 5 litre casks in a pinch.
The main reason I bought the Merida above was because it was a solid mountain bike that can take the abuse of a 52 yo man for commuting and the occasional stealth camp. I didn't buy it for the usual mountain biking stuff, I needed a solid bike for my purposes. The rack is an Axiom Journey rack with 100kg capacity. The front fork has an adjustable spring and compression damping up to hydraulic suspension lock out - cool for speeding down hills on the road.
I'm nearly 60 now and I still get on the MTN bike even though I own a motor bike that can haul twice as much stuff.
Sorry Doddy, this may be a bit much sideways for this video.

Sustainably riding is very important to me. Hence alloy . I am not a racer so a few grams heavier bike for sustainability is well worth it.

    • @tomb2289
      @tomb2289 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree, plus how many of us aren't carrying more than a few hundred grams too much timber anyway! I heard that more alloy frames fail quality control in manufacturing though compared to carbon, but hopefully the recyclability makes up for that?

YES to the video about storage hacks. I’m about to move in with my girlfriend, I’m losing my bachelor pad living room bike cave, but gaining a garage bike cave. We do still have to fit a car in there, so creative and smart use of space will be key. Two bikes in the quiver to fit, plus a stand a work top and all the tools! Love that fold out Ikea set up!

I prefer alloy for purely budgetary reasoning. Carbon frames are cool, but unless it has carbon unique features, like tube-in-tube cable routing and/or internal frame storage, I don't find the price worth it.
That said, I've noticed that many high end carbon bikes cover the cost of the frame through component savings. For example, the Nukeproof Mega Carbon Elite (featuring Fox Performance Elite suspension and full Shimano SLX groupset) costs almost identical to buying the Mega Alloy frame and building it up with the same spec. In an instance like this, I might as well just get the carbon frame.

I ordered a Specialized Chisel Limited edition thinking I would swap my 2021 Epic parts over, it came with a few frame defects like a poorly faced BB area and a dented headtube. The super thin light weight alloy bikes are extremely delicate and make carbon look like iron.

    • @vivek_v
      @vivek_v 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I have no idea how that happened but speaking from my experiences on a 2020 Chisel, the frame has been extremely sturdy. Keep in mind that I'm only 125 pounds, but when I'm not racing XC I push the frame way harder than it was ever supposed to be pushed to the point where I feel the frame twisting noticeably under me. Not to mention all the jumps and crashes into rocks that I have had. The frame is still going strong (knock on wood), and I have had it for almost a year and have no worries about the durability of lightweight alloy frames.
That being said, the new Chisel frame is almost .4 pounds lighter than mine and I would definitely be hesitant to send that light of an alloy frame off jumps.
As for carbon, I would have probably broke a carbon frame by now from impacts on rocks. That's why I'm concerned about super lightweight carbon frames, especially given the price. I guess our opinions are completely opposites

Moto GP don't use carbon frames because of the stiffness and less grip. KTM motocross bikes are considered to be better on some tracks because of the steel chassis that flex more then the japanese aluminium chassis.

    Hahaha....that was sharp....getting me x’ss mixed up 😂😂😂😂...
But a great channel guys, excellent content, passionate presenters, unparraleled knowledge, awesome footage !!
As for the questions, more than 30 min can take a big chunk of time to watch. Two shorter clips may work as well or better as one long one...I myself seldom go back to a video of, let’s say 40 min, if I get interrupted for whatever reason at 20 min. I skip the rest and watch the newest vid that came out. That affect viewing numbers on vids negatively I think.
Leaving out or alternating subjects doesn’t bother me. If you do that though, it might help to number episodes - I save mine for later reference,so, having an easy way to find the vid from a specific week or topic would be usefull.
Keep enjoying it and good luck !!

My road bike is carbon with carbon wheels. All it needs to do is roll fast on smooth pavement. My mountain bike, which I just got yesterday, is aluminum, and very proudly shows this with its brushed finish. I know carbon is advanced enough that it is as strong or stronger than aluminum in most circumstances, but I just feel more safe on a metal frame.

  • @hananas2

As someone who designs for a racing boat company that works in carbon fibre and works with the material itself on a weekly basis, I'll have an alloy bike over a carbon one any day of the week.
I'm not careful with my bikes and bang them around a bunch, drop them,... and whatever you've heard, alloy will usually hold up better to dings and hits, at least with the carbon layup used in bike frames.

If money was no object, and I could have any bike, it would be an enduro, chromoly. The way they look, especially clear costed with no paint is outstanding.
As that's not an option, I'd choose carbon, with alloy rims. I like having the forgiveness of the wheels flexing just a bit.
As for the show, I love the way it is right now. But as you say, it's getting harder to produce, so why not mix and match. The half hour is perfect 👌🏼 thank you for all your efforts Doddy! XC bike, Carbon wheels for sure. I love the stiffness and they are far better than the light aluminium offerings which I just destroy.

Alloy bikes for me. You my get a dent or a Gouged it would still be good.
There maybe an episode in how each material reacts to to point loading in a crash. I'm sure a sponsor would come to the party with a few reject frames (out of tolerance etc but still going to be good to test how the material reacts in a crash) . It may be a good to test a hard impact on a sharp rock etc (possibly a point load, a Sharp abrasive rock etc that may shave as well as stuff in the shed dropping on the bikes)

Sort of back to long bikes, I wouldn’t mind hearing your opinion on proper reach vs body size. As someone with short arms but a long torso, I always feel right on top of the handlebars when in the attack position. But with slack head angles, should I care as long as the front axle is way out in front of the body?

Hi Doddy. Writing in from Texas. I've got a 2021 Norco Fluid FS1. I like the bike but it feels heavy/sluggish on our slow technical limestone trails for a 120/130 travel trail bike (34lb). I know Norco make porky frames. Would you recommend throwing money at a proper wheelset or reinvesting in a lighter bike with lighter frame in the future. Love the show thanks for all the knowledge you've shared.

Alloy, i prefer a cheaper frame when it comes to replacing after a damage. And as they're cheaper in general, this gives you more headroom in the budget for better components. As for wheels i am blown away by Newmen alloy wheels, which are as light as carbon, but to my taste more compliant and you guessed it: cheaper...

carbon takes a lot of the vibrations out of the terrain, thats why most road bikes and road bars are carbon to get rid of some of the chatter. Alloy on a mountain bike is my go to due to the reliability, i would say however that the weld where the tubing connects is the only downside to alloy as with carbon the sections where the tubes meet are smooth and invisible creating a nicer finish. But my trail bike and jump bike are both alloy. (ns zircus- DJ, and orbea mx30- trail/xc bike)

So many brands only offer low end components on alloy bikes. I don't want xx1 but at least offer GX level with XD hub and 3-pos suspension.

Can you cover the difference between asymmetric and symmetric rims? Pro's and cons of each type and why or when you would choose one or the other type info.

How does the new suspension bearing press-kit compare with the current hub press-kit? are there some fittings and sizes that are exclusive to the suspension kit? Thanks!

I got the Spank spike vibrocore wheels that have foam in the rim and they are aluminum. When I got them some of the reviews where they give a mushy feel and aren't very efficient for pedaling, wich may be true, they are more geared towards downhill, I first put them on an enduro bike, the giant reign wich had trash small bump sensitivity, and those wheels really made a difference. Now I transfered them over to my new rig wich is basically a downhill bike, it's a Norco Shore with dual crown forks, but it has a dropper and an eagle drivetrain. So far it has been great, haven't noticed issues with pedaling efficiency, but I'm not sure I would because I'm out of shape and prefer going downhill.

And if money wasn't a factor I would go with this same bike because I wanted a downhill beast capable of pedaling, I was leaning toward aluminum because I've dented an aluminum DH bike in the past and it still worked for many years, I'd be worried about cracking a carbon frame although I know it wouldn't be likely. I did break a linkage on my DH bike once but I hit a large jump hard with poorly setup suspension because I didn't change the coil spring when I got fat. And the wheels I would probably say the same, I would definitely go with aluminum again but I might go with stronger wheels. I'm not sure, the Spank spikes feel weak probably because of the compliancy, but it is worth noting I cased a 35 foot double on them onto a very sharp edge and they are still dead straight. The DT Swiss wheels on my old DH bike where absolute tanks, I cased the same double but harder and they also held up as well as smashing through almost every trail on the mountain and they didn't get any more bent then they were when I got them because the bike was an old rental bike from the mountain that I got half price. The Giant SL wheels that came on my reign where trash, at the time I also had the downhill bike so I didn't ride my reign very hard until I broke the downhill bike and put the Spank wheelset on, but even with not very hard riding I had so many dents in the side of that rim. After 5 years of hard riding there was one really small dent in the DT Swiss wheels, after about four years of mild riding I've repaired probably 6 dents by now, and I mean mild riding, my DH bike was go to in the summer, and I didn't ride much in the winter, I only rode the Giant a few times at the mountain to get the suspension setup and then some mild trails on trips with the outdoor program at my college.

I just bought a new bike, which happened to be carbon frame but my main focus was on the specs of the bike. I just couldn't get the suspension and groupset i wanted on the alloy version. So far, i love the carbon frame but still... alloy would have been fine too

Funny how some people love the bike cave but I could go without it. I don’t hate it, but I don’t miss it when it’s not there. I think rotating segments is always a good idea given it permits you to cover more stuff and variety keeps things fresh.

Hi Doddy. In the first Bike Cave last week. What were the forks on the red Cannondale in the bike stand? They looked like the Lefty to me. But they didn't go up to the stem.

Went alloy on my 19 whyte t130. Main reason carbon was only 1lb lighter, figured if I lose 5 lbs it would make more of a difference. Plus the color was better.

The bikes getting longer debate is a complicated topic because what feels good to one rider may be completely wrong to another. I've recently come across Lee McCormack's website where he details how he determines the optimal size for a given rider. His method sounds really promising to me because it takes more complex anatomy into consideration than a simple height measurement as well as how the body moves on a mountain bike. The way he explains it, a too large frame will force you to bend your arms in certain scenarios where force must be applied through them and diminishes the power you can transmit. It still hasn't convinced me that it's the end all be all method of picking a frame size but it is something that makes a lot of sense to me.

I never check my tyre pressures, I just put 50psi in my Maxxis ignitors like they say to on the sidewalls and shred

They don´t mean it like that :D 50 psi is the maximum that tire can withstand. thats incredibly hard. Try something like 24 psi and even lower u will be mind blown :D

    • @connorcampbell144
      @connorcampbell144 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@dominikfabik2691 They say between 45 and 55 psi, so I put 5o psi in as it is in the middle, and I run tubes and it is what works for me, and I race with that much psi and come in good positions so I think I am ok. Thanks for the tip though.
