- It's always good practise to keep spares and repairs for your bike in an MTB Survival Kit. By keeping a selection of items to use on your bike at home, you could save your ride either before you head out, or after you come back through the door. You never know when you'll not be able to get down to your local bike shop (such as during a Pandemic!) if something goes wrong, so Doddy always recommends keeping a selection of equipment at home!

The mech hanger stuff drives me kind of crazy. Can't wrap my head around the fact it's basically one per frame. Some brands of bikes have a specific hanger per bike. Sounds a bit like what is known as planned obsolescence to me. I'm really glad we start seeing standard hangers and some of the brands are picking them up. Hope to see more and more of them doing so.
They're kind of expensive too! I think it cost me about £15 including postage for my Cannondale . 🙄 Turns out the one I had on there wasn't bent so now I have a spare I suppose. 🙃
I had a set of disk brake pads get soaked in mineral oil, I just popped them in the dish washer and they were good as new.
When I first started watching GMBN and getting better at riding trails, I was like "Well Dodd my man, I won't need THAT shit" when the Dodster would mention stuff. A year later and I now own half of the gear he told me to get.. lol great video.
Having had to re-bend/flatten a mech hanger with 2 rocks in the middle the S.A. bush in 36c blazing sun, I now always carry a spare mech hanger!

Brake pads, hanger, and quick links I keep on the bike because they are bike specific.
Shift cables and a spare valve stem with core I keep in my toolkit
And a kitchen sink, so you can wash your hands after the job :-P
Disposable rubber gloves are super nice
Electrical tape is a lifesaver I’ve used it for all sorts of stuff like patch a tire with a bit of tyre glue
As someone who has destroyed 2 derailleurs (on a road bike FFS), having a spare hanger is the difference between being back on the bike in 2 to 3 days, or a month waiting for this to arrive via Amazon.
Spare cables and cable housing also very useful in these instances.
FWIW, most online retailers will sell bulk/semi bulk supplies. Pushys in Australia sell cables in 10 packs, etc.
I use KMC chains and reuse KMC master links regularly (same chain, taking it off and on). No issues.
It's just a way to sell more product.
I had a kmc chain and it was garbage. After taking the quick link off once it was loose! And the chain stretched within a couple weeks. Maybe I just got a dud
They do wear off. You can see that at the interface - the tabs wear a bit and open and close more easily. Unofficially you can reuse them a few times, until it feels they open too easy (see Cyclingtips extensive reportr on chain cleaning, service and waxing). Officially they have reusable and non-reusable links and don't recommend using the latter more than once. And every chain maker I've read (Shimano, KMC, YBN, SRAM) strongly advises using old master links in a new chain.
Personally I reuse my own links if they feel secure after reassembly. But would not do it on another person's bike (briefly worked as a mechanic at a shop and still do amateur repairs on other people's bikes) unless it was an emergency to get home. Breaking a chain is fairly unusual, I've only broken two during rides in about 300-400K km ridden, and in both cases as results of shifting issues where the chain was split open caught between two gears, but the results could be catastrophic so I take this one seriously. Same with pedal and crankset stuff.
The masterlinks are the most worn parts of the chain. Always has been for me atleast.
@@tychoMX I keep several chains which I use in rotation. I take an old chain off and dump it in degreaser while a previous one has dried and ready to go on with its own missing link

Love it; the eye laser to emphasize cable ties. Must come from personal experience. My front fender came off yesterday and I finished the rod with it laying on the tire because I didn’t have a cable tie.
I’ve got a Topeak Survival gearbox strapped to my seat post and it’s brilliant because it’s compact and has everything you need for a long bike ride, and special compartment to keep your joining pins and quick links, it’s brilliant !!
A list of all of that would be great.

I wish I was someone that hasn't bent a mech hanger, I've done 4 in 2 years on a 2017 Norco Range, which are not easy to find in Europe 🤣
You know they are made to be bent back in place, right? You usually don't need to replace them unless they're cracked or severely bent.
@@ScotHastings yes but bending aluminium back weakens it further so I'd prefer to get it as straight as possible trail side then replace it straight after 🤷🏻♂️
I broke 3 in 2 weeks (and mangled 2 derailleurs too). Just very bad luck.

I have a Dremel tool w/a sanding wheel to resurface pads. A small honing stone takes burrs off of discs and dings on various parts.
I broke a hanger once. I Zap Strapped the mech to the rear stay. I got out and even had a few gears...

Wonderful tips!
I don't use the crimp on cable ends. I put some flux on the end and hit it with a solder iron. Keeps the ends from fraying, and if needed, I can pull the cable through the housing, and reinsert it without a problem.
Good shout with the brake springs, I had set which had become dislodged and got worn on the rotor but replaced the whole pad even though it had some life left in it.
Btw. If you don't have a valve core removal tool, the right sized spoke key, a lock on grip collar or a small adjustable spanner works just as well.

I'm a minimalist, and I've never had to walk home: Specialized Swat multi-tool (in frame), Lyzene tubeless blaster for flats, ibuprofen, band-aides, water, food.
Avoid buying compartment boxes, simply ordering a big Chinese meal and watch GMBN videos all weekend.
Order sauces for small tubs. Duck pancake with Hoi Sin is perfect as you get the full set in one hit.
Feel guilty the next day and ride your ass off....

ohhh I've bent a many hanger. Had a old Iron Horse all mountain bike that I must have broke that sucker off 5 times. probably my favourite riding bike ever though.
7:13...don't need a huge selection. Check the top of Doddy's tool chest for a list of the 4 dozen bottles you may need. LOL
6:43...My local bike guy said valve caps weigh too much so he doesn't recommend them. I say I'm at least 15 pounds over my ideal weight so I'll deal with the extra weight of a valve cap to keep mud away from my valve stems. I did not see where those valve caps came from in the links. Thanks for the video.

For tire repair, I keep a few pre-cut chunks of Flex Seal tape. No messing with sandpaper or glue, just wipe off the spot on the tube and stick it on.
I started using it after having problems with a wheelbarrow tube. Tried several different patches and glues and nothing seemed to stick for long, always end up with a blow out. Cut a chunk of this and no problems since. Stuff is stickier then heck.
Does the tape grow with the tube when inflated?
@@roryf3710 Not much, but neither does those pre-glued patches. It's enough to get you out of the woods. Might be a problem for plus sized tires.

Can I use regular lithium- grease for my bearing surfaces in a carbon frame?
Its not the first time i have just taken a spare bike with me in the van and had to use it. Other that that instead of pissing about with bleed kits and pads, i always have a set of spare brakes with me too, much quicker ! Wheels and tyres are something that i have taken as spares and have had to use too. If not for me then for the other guys.
Label those odd parts like that mech hanger. I recently dug into my parts box so many odd parts I have no idea what they are or what bike they were from. I was fishing out spare pads turns out they were pads for my old bike :/

Does anyone take a snake-bite kit with them? In Colorado we have rattlesnakes. There was one biker that I heard of that died from a bite. My dad has ridden past one and I had slowed down so it was gone before I got to it. They say its the 2nd person that gets bit after the first person wakes it up.

Because everytime I fix a flat (maybe 1-2 every 6 months), the glue totally dissapated into thin air
I try to run a pile of old tubes as spares. As the ones with holes pile up, I do a big round of patching. Because, yeah, the stuff dries up within a month of being opened.
What about an all condition lubricant? Is it any good? At the moment I am using the one fron WD-40 designed for bikes, an dso far it works, albeit it's not rain season yet in my country so I'm wondering how good will it perform by then, any advice you can help me with Doddy?
If it's their bike sub brand and not their dry teflon oil then treat it as wet chain oil

I know some online bikeshops sell sell motorex disk brake cleaner, I haven't tried it but it's meant for car brakes. But Hope Tech advice agianst using degreaser, disk brake cleaner on their brakes, due to seals getting damaged from it.

Hi Luke, if you do not mind upgrading your groupset "you can buy directly from shimano or your local bike shop can order it for you." If you do not want to upgrade go with what is in the quotes.
I wouldn't go back with that derailleur it's junk. I recommend upgrading to at least Shimano Altus or better.

I've always wondered, are gear outer cables and brake hoses made from the same material? Are they essentially the same thing with one having a wire running inside while the other has brake fluid?

No. Hydraulic housing is basically a plastic hose. Gear housing is made of wound cables. Brake cable housing (for those running cable brakes) is wound like a spring.
They are not interchangeable. Brake cable is 1.6mm, gear cables 1.2mm. hydraulic hose, various diameters.

this is new mech and I just had torun twice to that friendly bike shop - so I did 40 km in total going to and back to that shop. can you help in what can I do?
Maybe one of the cassette rings are slightly tweaked, i had to do this as the chain kept skipping.
Get your hanger straightened. Any decent shop has the tool required...or beg and borrow one

Let it be clear, motorcross or enduro bikes DON¨T leak oil, not even when they fall over. They don´t leak petrol anymore also, as sinds 2008 all 4T bikes have inyection systems, and 2T sinds 2018. Please don´t make motor sports look like heavy contaminators, as this is untrue. I love both sports, enduro/mx or biking, and I also love hiking in the mountains. I know these worlds from the inside, and I can say we are all as clean and educated as, when we enter the country side. I love the GMBN tech programs, but this statement struck a nerve. MX/enduro motorbikes are well serviced machines in general. MX bikes only ride on MX tracks, and enduro motors pass an MOT test specialy to control leaks as on any vehicle that drives on public roads. I see more leaking shocks on mtb-s than on motorbikes. That said, keep up the good work !!
At least the pandemic should be shorter than the zombie apocalypse. I do know of one way to end the zombie apocalypse. Hide their phone chargers.
