Would've never thought of this! It Also makes it easier to insert the lights & when they burn out the client can change them 😀. You're the best Steve 🥰
If the pyramid housing is a hard plastic, you could just make your silicone mold strait in it (without the liner obviously) Spray it with mold release the same way you did. Getting it out is as simple as breaking the seal on the sides with a lolly stick and working it out. If you do end up having to get a whole new mold, try that with the old one. That way you don't have anything to worry about if "life happens" and something goes sideways.
How ingenious! Would never have thought to do this. I've wanted to do some deep pours but the amount of resin was too much for my budget. Now I can give it a try with your solution. Thanks for this trick and it looks beautiful!
Hey Steve, this is exactly what I have planned for my pyramid. I wondered why I didn't see others use this technic before. I've seen others use a plastic bottle to form the hollow part for the lights. But I think making the insert would be a lot easier and more effective. Thank you for this video. Now I know just exactly how I'm going to do this. Great minds think alike!🌺
You can also pour each side at a time by putting up a small dam and make it hollow. It does make leaves and flowers easier, but takes FOREVER. This would make it much much quicker. Thanks and great work as always!💞
Thank you Steve. I bought this mold while ago, and being new to resin, didn't want to waste so much if I messed up or it didn't come out the way u planned. I'm gong to try and make the silicone triangle 🔺️ now and use this technique.
I have a few jewelry box molds which use a lot of resin in the top, resulting in solid, heavy covers. I am trying to work out a way to create a half sphere hollow in them so that there is more storage space and less weight and loss of resin. I might try a rubber ball or ping pong ball on a skewer after I have sprayed it with mold release.
Here in Canada 🇨🇦 we say "popsicle stick". I have adopted "lolly stick" from watching British crafters cuz I love the term! My granddaughter was helping me clean up my workshop, and asked where the popsicle sticks go, I told her the "lolly sticks" so in this drawer. She laughed so hard at this term!
Ooh I learned a lot from this. I don’t think this specific method will be exactly what I use as I plan to do small, small, tiny UV resin projects, but it opens my imagination to lots of possibilities when it comes to making molds (which I hope to do a lot!)
This is lovely! At first I was a little disappointed when I saw the bubbles on the inside, but the next moment I thought it is very pretty the way it is. Especially with the light, it's really a beautiful piece of art. But Steve, you could simply use the plastic as a mold for the silicone and safe a lot of time, too. Another way to save a lot of resin I use is to put lots of glass nuggets in the middle. 😉
Thanks so much for showing how to make the inserts so that they match the shape of the molds!!!! I've made several, but never made them to shape. Mine are just randomly shaped as what ever I had on hand at the time. Some of them are squares from leftover when I make various molds. It also seams that you could make a mold cast from the same thing by pouring silicone over the outside...... A little more work but worth it if it's something you will be making more of. Stay safe and stay creative👍👍🔔🔔🦋🦋
Could you just spray the base with mold release and pour the silicone directly in there to make the insert? Or would it be impossible to get out once it’s cured?
Hi Steve was wondering if you looked at the measuring cup for liquids used to make the silicon wouldn't the amount it shows be the same as what you got by doing all the different measurements? Just curious if it would or would not be as accurate. It seems after you filled the form with silicon if any silicone is left just subtract that from the amount you started with.
Love this tip!! I know that you were not worried too much about bubbles in the insert, but what can you do to have less bubbles on the inside of the pour? I ❤️ how this came out! Thank you Steve 😊!
Hiya Steve. Great idea but u could have saved urself a lot of time and just make the silicone pyramid directly in the bottom of the mold stand as the silicone wouldn't stick to it as it's not silicone. U have the demolding spray already, so u could just spray that into the pyramid stand and use that. Then u are guaranteed to get a perfect mold. All the best, Diane, UK x
Hi Steve, very nice video. And a brilliant idea. Saves a lot of money. And, what is also cool to do, is later fill the open space with a different color of resin. So you get a pyramid in a pyramid. Or it's maybe nice to put mirrors on the inside. So many ideas... haha And, for the insert. I bet there's a market for that. Because a lot of people are using the same large molds 😊 Anyway, nice video and a very good tip!
I wasn't able to find out what exactly watercolor ink is. I found water based products, these can't be used with resin unfortunately. Other products I found that are also called watercolor inks are alcohol based. These shoud work, but ikd if they are UV resistant. Alcohol inks fade very much in resin.
@@sengasengana some alcohol inks fade, not all of them. Steve did an updated video about them at another resin artists advice 😊 Which was amazing to learn because I was staying away from them for that exact reason.
I love it, especially as it lights up! Thing is it would be a real pain getting it to light up without having the void inside. I know you can get lights you can sit them on but they tend to be more expensive. Thanks for this, though I haven't been able to afford a large pyramid yet, I hope to save to get one, though their is always something that creeps up that I'd want isn't their lol Hugs x Ann x
This is so cool GREAT IDEAL!! But I was thinking using a large candle, will resin stick to it? I was thinking it being wax it wouldn't, however I have never used epoxy resin (yet), I watch all your videos, you have taught me alot. I'm preparing to start...
Two questions; 1. Could you use a UV curing resin in a thin layer to cover the walls of the interior pyramid? 2. If you make a layered pyramid or anything layered in a mould, can you remove each layer and fix anything to make sure it is a smooth surface for the next layer?
You shouldn't take out the layers since you break the vacuum and the next layer of resin will inevitably spill on the sides of the first layers. Guess how I know. ;) As for yout first question, I'm not sure if I got it right. You surely can, but why would you do that?
Question: Steve why didn't you just make your insert by pouring the silicone right into the mold itself? Silicone doesn't stick to silicone molds. All you have to do is apply some wax or Vaseline to the actual mold.
Why not just use the original mold and fill it up halfway with silicone to make the insert/plug? Eliminate the need for the acetate, cutting, and taping that results in a flawless silicone insert/plug as a bonus. I don't do any of this stuff but silicone won't stick to silicone so it isn't going to ruin your original silicone liner. Also, why spend a bunch of money on specialty silicone when you can just dissolve $5 tubes of 100% Type 2 silicone caulk from the hardware store with (a small amount of) acetone to make molds with? It might not be quite as smooth without a lot of ratio trial-and-error but I'd say a 2:1 ratio Type 2 silicone to acetone would do the job for something like this. Maybe I'm missing something I suppose -- my first thoughts though.
Would've never thought of this! It Also makes it easier to insert the lights & when they burn out the client can change them 😀. You're the best Steve 🥰
That's the best part besides saving money.

Ty for this tip. I have been staying away from larger molds because of the amount of resin. God bless you and your family and furbabies!!

This is a great idea, thank you for sharing. It has given me an idea to make it like those shakers. ✌️❤️

I use the 100ml silicone cups. Put in 1st layer let harden then add silicon cup. Easy removal and saves a ton of resin
Same .. or another mold that’s square or round 👌
The one you made looks like an underwater temple, beautiful
Best resin crafter on youtube
Really pretty and stores the lights in it as well. Great idea to save resin.
Very very clever. Many years ago I would put empty drink cans in the bottom of my big plant pots. And used packing peanuts for bulk. You are awesome
I just love it. Thank you so much for loading your videos. Any tips and tricks for using resin is very much appreciated.
You can also pour each side at a time by putting up a small dam and make it hollow. It does make leaves and flowers easier, but takes FOREVER. This would make it much much quicker. Thanks and great work as always!💞
I've done that too, it does take forever haha

I wonder if using uv resin to attach the leaves to the sides of the mold, if it would keep them from floating.

I have started doing lots of that to save the resin, great ideas.

Absolutely BRILLIANT idea!!! Thanks so much Steve , from Victoria BC 🇨🇦

Your the best!!! I cant believe it took me so long to find you!!! Thanks for all your info videos!
Wicked awesome. Cannot wait to play with this technique.
Thank you once again Steve. Stunning.
Wow! That really saved a lot of resin! The pyramid is really awesome looking. I love the look with the little lights inside.
i really like how the bubbles stuck to the insert it gave the whole thing an under water vibe
You make it seem so simple
Thanks for sharing this great idea
Fantastic idea! Thank you so much for it
What a Fantastic Idea Steve!
This is SO USEFUL!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Great idea Steve! Who doesn’t love a money saving video! And I reckon actually making the insert is half the fun too! 👍 ♥️♥️🇦🇺
What about the bubbles that the insert made? You can see them through the clear resin
Wow so much good info ❤Thank you
That is smart.... thank you for sharing
This is awesome! Thank you🤗
so simple and genius
Hi have you ever down one by putting your leaves on sides let each side dry then do then next side it looks awesome and you use very little resin
This is lovely! At first I was a little disappointed when I saw the bubbles on the inside, but the next moment I thought it is very pretty the way it is. Especially with the light, it's really a beautiful piece of art.

What a great idea ! Genius! 👍🇬🇧
Very cool. Thank you!
I would be traumatised using that much resin in one go 😂
Great, great pro tip! Thank you!!
Great video! Thank you 🙌🏻
For interest sake, why didn't you just pour the silicone in the pyramid mould instead of making the inner pyramid?
Wow that was amazing thankyou soo much for your very useful knowledge, you would have to be my most favourite youtuber your knowledge is amazing 🤩

Wow! Love the look of this project. Thanks!
Can u show us how to do slant pours in the mold? Please
Love this idea
I’d been wondering how to do this. Thanks for the video!
Brilliant idea, thank you
Great tip!!
Could you just spray the base with mold release and pour the silicone directly in there to make the insert? Or would it be impossible to get out once it’s cured?
Steve,
That's gorgeous, it would no doubt be beautiful with a shell theme too👍
What a great idea!!!!!
Wow!! Can you show us one with color?
Great idea.

Brilliant idea Steve. Love it ❤️
wonderful! I'm new to this resin stuff and Im addicted. Im sure to mess up a lot so its already a saver to try the bigger molds with inserts! :-×🥰
Fantastic!! Thank you 💕🧜♀️
Love this tip!! I know that you were not worried too much about bubbles in the insert, but what can you do to have less bubbles on the inside of the pour? I ❤️ how this came out! Thank you Steve 😊!
Covering the sides of the insert with a thin layer of resin before putting it into the mold should help avoid bubbles.
In ghis case, you could also calculate the resin saved, without all the water: one third times the length of one side of the base times the height.
Hey I have a question im doing a desk top is there a resin i can use for that but also other stuff
That's awesome! I never bought this mold cuz I didn't want to use that much resin at once while being so new to it
Hiya Steve. I did think about that too
Mind. Blown.
Thank you wise one ;)
So helpful 😁
Couldn’t you of put the mould stuff in the hard outside of the pyramid?
Very interesting 😊
Hi Steve, very nice video.

I would buy the insert!
So amazing.
Steve can l ask why you made a pyramid to fit inside the mold instead of just pouring the resin straight into the silicone mold to the depth you want?
Thank you for sharing this brilliant idea! 🙂

can you construct a new pyramid insert?
Love it!!
Steve can you not just put the silicon straight in the insert or will the silicon stick to the silicon?
Ok I got it.👍🏼
I want this mold
Hi Steve, what scales do you use? I'm having trouble finding decent ones for my resin.

Very pretty.

That's alot of work
Is that silicone or resin
Howdy mate!
Just imagine the different shapes you could use instead in the pyramid. Like dome.
Nifty!
I can't see it is pixelated terribly I really wanted to see this 🥺
Worked so much better tonight 😀☮️☯️

Actually silicone really does stick to silicone
You can buy a pyramid with 10cm and 1inc on the out of the box
I’m from American I can’t understand English 😂I pick up maybe a few words occasionally. Maybe you could do subtitles
