I remember that buzz I used to get why listening to that opening song. I used to smash this when I was a youngin. I loved Darthmod because of its extra settlements.
Is this the first time firearms play a decisive role in European battles? Is this the first confrontations between musketeers VS archers in Europe? And did Knights at that time still wear same full armor and horse bardings as they once did three centuries ago?
Firearms were beginning to become more common in European armies in the early 16th century. They were present on the battlefield before but in smaller numbers however it was largely a new phenomenon still. You may have had officers with pistols and a few squads of rifles before. However, by the turn of century, 1500, they were become more common, with say a detachment of pikemen with a number of muskets mixed in. Spanish tercios are a good example of this. The main reason guns became more standardised in warfare was how effective they were against more traditional formations like Swiss pikemen. The Swiss were widely renowned for their military capabilities: imagine a wall of pikemen, in breakable by cavalry, advancing on you. However, the Swiss notably suffered a number of defeats while continuing to use this model of fighting, losing key battles to enemies with mixed in musketeers. They tried to maintain their traditional fighting formations of pikemen by integrating muskets into them, the still found some success fighting for their employers, but it was inevitable that such massed formations which didn’t integrate gunfire effectively would give way to specialisation in the field of conflict. By the time of the Thirty Years War, early 17th century, you had solely musket units where the art of gunpowder warfare was being fully explored.
