There are a lot of similarities with your placement and mine despite being on opposite ends of the country (I'm down in Oita). The inaka of the inaka is how I explain my placement and even the city being pretty inaka. City people in my prefecture aren't allowed to drive but I can. And like you, it's kinda necessary since the trains only come once every hour to hour and a half. There are also a lot of places within the city that are really hard to get to without a car. Good first video! I enjoy hearing about other JET experiences.

Meggie Kay Awesome! Thanks for the comment. It’s funny because most of Japan is very inaka but people often think of the busy cities like Tokyo etc. But I’m glad I got placed where I did because otherwise I may have never discovered this beautiful prefecture!

Hey Anthony, I'm moving off to Mitane, Akita in a month here on the JET Program. It's nice to hear a little bit about Akita. Thanks for the perspective!!

I got accepted for this years intake and I'm desperately trying to find out as much as I can before I go ! Do the majority of JETs know Japanese? I'm trying to learn the basics and I know you can 'get by' with that, but it'd be good to know how much the average JET knows before getting there.

Michael G I would say about 1/3 JETs have studied Japanese in college. Whereas 2/3 might know some from travel or self study and don’t know much. But most people pick up the language quickly and after one year almost all jets can have a basic conversation in Japanese.

Hey Anthony. Thanks for the new perspective. I heard you say you've slotted in at a local church, a Christian one? Asking cause I was worried it might be hard to do once I get there since I also really want to be placed in an inaka and I guess I'm coming in with a lot of assumptions 😅

Nonhlanhla Mkwanazi No worries! I suppose that’s a normal thing to wonder haha. Yes I go to a Protestant Christian church. And where I live I actually have some options. If you live in an inaka inaka town like me, chances are you’ll be able to have a car which makes commuting to a church possible. I would think no matter where you are, there should be a church within a 45 min drive.
