    It has to be such a daunting task to tackle such a role. This gives me a greater appreciation for the amount of research and skill it must have taken for Natalie Portman to pull this off. I think she did an excellent job. The point is not to look EXACTLY like the character, it's to capture the essence of the role. Portman did that, I think. And she added such a depth of character. The tremendous grief and the immense responsibility on Jackie's shoulders to make the right decisions. Being under a microscope during a time of personal and national crisis. The dichotomy of the elegant and strong First Lady, and the broken and grieving widow. Beautiful.

    The late Jackie WAS awkward and looked uncomfortable as she bound to protocol and be lady-like, up until her late husband passed away. After the occurance, she become very outspoken and her attitude particularly admired as she work in publishing company and live without bodyguard. This is when some paparazzi snapped her in casual clothes and she became fashion icon throughout her life eversince being 1st lady, embodiment of elegance basically. The 3 stranded pearls, raincoat and headgear were some of her signature. None of the pearls are real when they auction it, which makes her great icon for many

    Natalie should've won really. It is incredibly difficult to portray somebody of historical importance whose life has been so well documented and filmed. The general public already has an idea of what this person was and how they conducted themselves and thus it makes it poignant for the actor to come up with a believable portrayal. However Natalie did a wonderful job. I did not like her walk tough, I find her stiff and preoccupied, but then again she was really preoccupied with becoming and coping somebody else. Jackie was much more floaty and smooth, natural. I also wish Natalie did not try and copy Jackie's lip motions as on her, they don't look very flattering.

I'm saying this because I don't know how it was at that time during the nation's feelings about JFK's assassination. However, this video itself it so poignant in showing that not only did Natalie Portman do a stellar job in the movie but also the emotion of the mourning that it seems most of the country was going through let alone Jackie and their loved ones. She didn't crumble in public, though I'm sure in private when she was alone she let all that go but, my my my, what a strong woman she was to stand up and show the nation and even the world the kind of woman, wife and mother she was. yes, that's because it is a dramatization. The director wants you to know what's really going through the character's head and heart. The scene main goal is not be an exact copy (although it tries to be as possible as it can be) - but to tell part of the story.

    This is one of Natalie Portmans greatest performances since Black Swan, she has soo much raw emotion and dedication to the character. She was pitch perfect in the entire runtime. It's a real shame however that she didn't win best nomination for best performance, I hate the Oscars anyway. It felt like I was watching a real life documentary movie, all the acting is incredible. Actually, if you listen closely to the real Jackie, she does sound kind of breathless and Monroe-esque. Natalie Portman's Jackie gets the cadence more or less right, but not the timbre of the voice. On the whole though, the accent and enunciation sound painfully affected and stilted. Also, her face is way too animated and she comes across as having a lot of nervous energy. The real Jackie comes across as even-keeled, slightly stiff, and rather placid. Not a huge fan of Portman as an actress anyway. She's a decent performer, but...not one of the greats. Emma Stone is a far superior actress I think.

    • @holly9474
      @holly9474 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I think you're right about the energy. It is that which makes her not quite Jackie, there was something very calm and still about Jackie beneath the surface. Perhaps it was that which allowed her to weather the storms she went through in life.

    With television being around for so long and public figures having honed how to behave in front of a camera through years of experience, you don't really think about how daunting a recorded interview like this would have been. With it being relatively new technology/practice, there wasn't really much protocol on how to behave in front of a camera like that.

    Posture and gate are perfect. Voice is pretty spot on too. She pushes just so slightly with her intonation and facial movements, a few times, as if to say, “hey everybody, isn’t this a great Jackie O?” But it’s very very slight. Actors can’t help but to enjoy acting.

    The timing and her dialect are amazing. She obviously worked quite hard on this role. I was 3 days old when the White House tour was broadcast. My parents tell me I was sitting with my father on our sofa the day of the assassination. I’ve visited the White House 8 times. Every visit was as exciting as the first. I recall thinking when I was standing in the cross hall, facing the north doors, as I looked from side to side, I could see the outside wall of the state dining room and looking to my right, could see the outside wall of the East room, that the White House wasn’t as large as everyone thinks. It’s such a beautiful home with so much history, I wish I could return someday. If any of you have the chance, it’s a place every American should visit.

    I think she did a great job of mimicking her mannerisms and voice inflections....not so sure about her demeanor though. Jackie is soft spoken, smiling, but face straight to the camera or to whomever she speaks - it’s locked dead on.....Natalie, on the other hand, does the chin low, almost like she’s trying to play it shy/vulnerable/delicate. Wonder if that was intentional so that viewers would feel some type of way? Or if it’s just how it naturally came out of Natalie’s performance?

    • @Colleoleen
      @Colleoleen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I watched it with the sound off, I like how you point this out! Yes, she fails to capture Jackie’s before-there-was-Botox freeze-smile. Portman at moments tilts her head to the side, opens her mouth wider, smiles bigger, and glance downcast more frequently, whereas Jackie isn’t nearly so animated. From the shoulders down Portman mimics the posture of the Jackie-as-Whitehouse spokesmodel, from the shoulders-up it's Natalie Portman with an accent.

    Natalie made Jackie frightened not naturally comfortable. After comparing, Jackie was speaking with less expression and Natalie was speaking more wide eyed, scared, and larger mouth moving. She was at the casket longer too which made her sadder instead of comforting the child that Jackie did. She always held her composure, not show vulnerability in front of the public. She composed herself until she left the room. Its what people did back than. I wanted to see that side of her behind closed doors and away from people. In away, I felt depressed watching the movie so I didn't watch the whole thing since Natalie was portraying her differently, not like that classy, a bit shy, but confident, and elegant woman she was in front of people. Natalie made her scared of everything when in reality she left rooms with a smile every time and made people feel at ease until her passing. My boyfriend couldn't watch it either from us knowing Jackie was an icon that people looked up to, not just as John F. Kennedy's wife, the first lady but was a charitable person.
