Ever consider doing a TOP 10 AUSTRALIAN WESTERNS? I'm the director of 'The Legend of Ben Hall', and can point you in the direction of a whole bunch of cool Aussie Westerns ....
So glad to see Three Burials on this list. I loved this movie and even among my movie nerd friends they have never seen/heard of this movie. Super underrated and TLJ and Barry Pepper just knock it out of the park. It's so good. It's far from my favorite movie on this list but it deserves to be in the top 10.
Wind River, Hell or High Water, and Sicario are excellent examples of neo westerns. Taylor Sheridan is an amazing writer on those films. Along with Logan and No Country for Old Men.
I have all of those and they are all amazing. Definitely see Bad day in the largest widest you can. Filmed in Panavision. Can't go wrong with Peckinpah
This is great. Can we watch these westerns on TH-cam? You've made viewing westerns a great pleasure. Couldn't see 'em in my country India. Thanks for your video.
The last thing Wolverine is in Logan is a loner. He's basically a caretaker, Forced to lay low and keep quite because he's actions now affect folks other than himself.
@@webs538 I'm not knocking it. Logan being broken down like that, where he's basically forced to take care of a child and an old man because he absolutely can not deal with any more guilt. He'd rather be dead than live knowing his inaction lead to their deaths. There was truly no joy left in him. I thought it was cool and kinda heavy seeing him like that.
I remember watching No Country for Old Men in theaters with some family members over the Thanksgiving weekend. My dad and uncle walked out hating it and their opinions rubbed off on me so I ended up hating it as well. It wasn't until several years later I watched it on my own and thought it was fantastic.
An actual great western can be a neo-western too! Case in point...Sam Raimi's unique take on the western genre with 'The Quick and the Dead' with Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DeCaprio.
Good list. I saw them all. And I know that movies - like everything else - must evolve...but westerns are a special thing and modern westerns, well...there is no such thing. At least in my opinion!
Why? I am straight and it had scenes that made me feel somewhat uncomfortable as a straight man. But the film is made to a very high standard and the acting from all the cast is very good indeed. Especially Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhal. The whole point of cinematic story making is to push boundaries of society and to get the audience to explore different ideas as well as just good old fashioned entertainment. I went to the cinema to watch Brokeback because I knew that it was going to be a film worthy of all the universal praise it was getting regardless of the fact that I might be somewhat uncomfortable at times. I've never watched it again in all fairness, but it is a very well made film for sure.
@@HalleyBay61 Nothing to do with who they love, If Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid was gay, and the only part related to that was the part with the bicycle scenes, no chick, it would still be a great western. Maybe for some better, not just a buddy film western. Tarentino had a bit on why Top Gun 1 was a gay love story. Ends up with "you can ride my tail any time". If I recall. That interpretation doesn't stop it being about aviators at Top Gun. But if they were straight, but porters on a rail line, I think it would have been pushing the idea it was actually an aviation movie.
I don't see at least 5 of those as westerns. I looked at other lists, and they are almost all incoherent lists of films, I think Bambi was on one of them. It is obvious that nobody has any idea what belongs in this category. The basic western trajectory is that the civil war was the war whose purpose was to assert federal power over state's rights. The party lasted less than 100 years before the feds grabbed everything. Disaffected southerners or various northerners, who either have war damage, or in some cases play along to keep the action rolling, move, or return to the west. And sort their problems out with tools developed during the war, that briefly gave individuals unusual power. But many westerns hint at the fact that this period will not last long as the west is finite, and these bahaviours will hit a wall soon enough. So a classic ending has the hero run off to some last frontier, or be it Bolivia, or wherever Shane is off to. Or sometimes there is a return to small time life. Sicario, is a pro federal government wet dream. Even Wind River has a hero who is the guy who determines who can hunt with freedom. More like 007 bureaucrats with the power to kill.
The problem with Hell or High Water is that it if you have a reliable source of income (in their wells), you should have no problem raising money on that basis to pay your mortgage. So they knew more about bank robberies than finance, still a pretty stupid premise.
For me Hell or Hight Water is simply perfection, the best out of all of them. Great video to find new movies
Great film and thanks!
Agreed
HoHW for the Win. I have to get it in 4K
Yep
Completely agree
These are all fantastic. Hell or High Water and Wind River are my favorites of the list.
I like wind river, but in the end it is a lame premise. Some guys working in some camp are murdering people.

It has crossed my mind, perhaps in the future!
I'll be watching this movie today

Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man!! Kind of a guilty pleasure movie but still a lot of fun!!!
No country and hell or high water immediately made my list of must see classics.
Great content as always! You should do one of NeoWestern tv shows!
Wind River, Hell or High Water, and Sicario are excellent examples of neo westerns. Taylor Sheridan is an amazing writer on those films.
Along with Logan and No Country for Old Men.
I couldn't agree more. I was going to comment much the same. I'm also a big fan of the the Coen Bros.
Hell or High Water is a perfect Western Bank Robbery film. Wind River is a masterpiece of Western noir mystery. These two are my favorites.
Perfect list
You are missing Bad Day at Black Rock, The Getaway and Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.
I have all of those and they are all amazing. Definitely see Bad day in the largest widest you can. Filmed in Panavision. Can't go wrong with Peckinpah
Spencer Tracy!!! Hell yeah!
This is great. Can we watch these westerns on TH-cam? You've made viewing westerns a great pleasure. Couldn't see 'em in my country India. Thanks for your video.
The Rover is great as well.
i really loved MUD what a great watch, loved the ending
Honorable mention: 2019’s The Mustang…great film
The last thing Wolverine is in Logan is a loner.
He's basically a caretaker,
Forced to lay low and keep quite because he's actions now affect folks other than himself.
He’s more of a loner in the comic. I highly recommend old man Logan if you never read it

What do you reckon is the best neo-western of all time?
I've got one: Mad Max (1979).
Bad day at black rock
My just finished sci-fi Western, "A Storm of Lead." But I'm a bit biased.
Blade Runner
Is there an email to contact you for project propositions ?
Hell Or High Water, Wind River, No Country For Old Men and Mule are among the best films ever made !
“Way of The Gun”
No Country for Old Men, Sicario, Sicario 2...Full stop!
Sicario isn't a western it is an elegy to the deep state.
Old man Logan is the marvel comics version of Unforgiven. The movie used Shane
An actual great western can be a neo-western too! Case in point...Sam Raimi's unique take on the western genre with 'The Quick and the Dead' with Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DeCaprio.
Wind River is the best film of all time.
The Getaway (1972)
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
The Way of The Gun
No Country for Old Men
Sicario
Hell or High Water
Windriver
Logan
❤️👍
I can see why you put Logan on here but it should be 8 at best.
Good list. I saw them all. And I know that movies - like everything else - must evolve...but westerns are a special thing and modern westerns, well...there is no such thing. At least in my opinion!
Mud is not a western
I like Brockback Mountain, but it doesn't fit here.
Broke back should have NEVER made this list! Or any further mentions, EVER!
Why?
I am straight and it had scenes that made me feel somewhat uncomfortable as a straight man.

Over Brit, Aussie whatever accents go do your own.
Mud is not a neo western, it’s a southern gothic movie
