The microbeats on Vespertine are mostly made by Björk herself. In an interview with Pitchfork in 2015, she said: "I did 80% of the beats on Vespertine and it took me three years to work on that album, because it was all microbeats. Matmos came in the last two weeks and added percussion on top of the songs, but they didn’t do any of the main parts, and they are credited everywhere as having done the whole album."

It Was Written was at least good, some I've seen call it a classic/just as good as/better than Illmatic. Similarly Stillmatic is at least good and so is God's Son. Then Hip Hop is Dead is inconsistent but has high highs, similar with I Am (Nas is Like, Undying Love, NY State of Mind P2, Hate Me Now, etc) and and someone with God's Son too (namely due to Made U Look and Get Down, imo). The rest range from alright to terrible. A lot of people like Distant Relatives as well though but I didn't see the hype. I also think The Firm album was overhated in would go in the inconsistent with high highs category for me if included (Phone Tap alone is a classic).

I’ve been a die hard Bjork fan since I was 14. I wish I had friends that I could share this mutual love of her work with. I felt blessed & lucky to see her exhibit in the MoMA.
Im 14 rn and Ive recently fell in love with her. I remember my mom playing human behavior and all is full of love when I was young, so I decided to delve into her music. Im now obsessed

I got into Björk through my dad when one day, we were watching Sucker Punch (back in 2012-2013) and the song “Army of Me” came on. My dad said “hey thats Björk.” I didnt really know who that was at the time. So he showed me a bit of her music. Thats when I went home (my parents are not together) and decided to give her a listen. I instantly fell in love and have been a fan ever since. I’ve listened to most of her albums and I love her artistic rawness. That amazing, genuine, out of this world, talent. I cant begin to describe my love and passion for her and her music. Its incredible. I cant make a list because they’re all just magnificent pieces of art! I really don’t like placing things in lists. She’s incredible and will remain in my (wow hypocritical right?) list of artists I genuinely love and adore with all my heart.
I actually love "Volta," it's one of my favorites. But I can understand why a lot of her fans had trouble connecting with it. Bjork is perhaps kind of an acquired taste, but I would often play her music where I worked; the reactions were always all over the place. Believe it or not, some people don't even know who she is. Interestingly enough, it's the "Volta" album that a lot of non-fans respond to in terms of being able to appreciate; songs like "Innocence" are some of the most accessible Bjork tracks I've ever heard. I'm not sure if that's why fans don't like it or not.
Daryn Wiseman a lot of people don’t like Volta because of how it is as an album. The songs are great, but people like her more focused album executions. Volta is a fun album, but I wish it was more focused intellectually.. but I also understand the process and intention of the album was to be fun and visceral and exploring making music very closely together and trusting that it’ll present some kind of congruency. You can see in later albums that she learned a lot from making this album.
It’s pretty easy to believe, she was at the height of her popular music crossover in the 90’s/early 2000’s. Not a lot of her albums past Vespertine got a lot of radio play, and that came out 20 years ago.
I think Volta, along with Debut are her most mainstream sounding albums. Debut was electro-dance/house that was huge in the 90s, and Volta was leaning into the Electropop revival in the late 2000s. It makes sense why casuals or non fans would like the Volta songs more. I can see some hardcore fans being upset that Volta was not experimental enough. But for me, my issue is not that it’s too mainstream for her. I don’t mind mainstream music at all. My issue with Volta is it’s very messy. Volta starts with very energetic tracks like Earth Intruders and Wanderlust, and then goes into a 7 minute slow song in The Dull Flame of Desire, before going back to energetic and upbeat with Innocence. The whiplash makes it hard to listen to and it can get boring with the length of the songs. I think the album could have been structured differently. The Dull Flame Of Desire could have been the outro. There are still a lot of great songs on there though, and it’s still a decent album in my opinion. I just don’t play it a lot.
Thank you so much for giving Bachelorette the credit it deserves. That song is godlike. Its haunting, beautiful, and powerful, and I'm glad you recognize that it's amazing

I'd love to see your wifes ranking since I think I remember you saying she was the one that got you into Bjork. Does she pretty much agree with your ranking?
Bjork is not only A) one of the few artists where I listen to entire albums start to finish, but B) one of the artists who I think deserves every bit as much fanfare and fan-worship as she receives. I dont understand how anyone can listen to her music and not see it as genius level art: even if you dont think the songs are catchy or beautiful or whatever, they are so carefully composed and diverse and experimental and theatrical and unique. The thing about Bjork is that shes been in the game for so long but still no one even comes close to approximating what she does, which is astounding because shes inspired so many artists. Really a gift to be able to experience the zeitgeist of Bjork.
I could do a 30 minutes video just talking about Vespertine. It's just perfection, it's delicate, intimate, cold and warm at the same time. Classic and modern.

i love that bjork’s third worst album was a top 10 album of the year for him. he really loves bjork lmao edit: not to mention utopia was an honourable mention for 2017
Aurora is her greatest song hands down and made me cry which is almost impossible honestly. Everything about that track is so lush and beautiful, like you're falling asleep under the stars
Charlieh OR Post had a sense of romantic grandiosity about it that came coupled with the distinct feeling of unease within the alien electronics and synthesizers. Tracks like Hyperballad blend strings with oddball synthesizers to a confounding effect. One of my favorite records.
TheNeedleDrop's facial hair: Worst to Best Note that your current style should undoubtedly be worst. Your mustache is too high it looks like it's coming out of your nose.
same honestly not to be dramatic but I would totally die to that song lol. Especially the live version from Vulnicura live. In my opinion it’s better than the studio version, please listen to it if you haven’t already 😊
Great list. When you expressed your love for the Medulla LP I just wanted to hug you lmao. I feel like that record is sorta underrated just because of how 'out there' it is, I was sorta afraid you were gonna rank it low.
Medulla was the first Björk album I ever listened to (I was about 15 at the time), and I fell in love with it. It's still my favorite, even after listening to more of her music just because it's so tonally unique and fresh every time I come back to it.
Greg Goat I have Evol , Daydream nation, Dirty, Sonic Nurse, Thousand leaves and Goo honestly I love them all but Goo was the first one I heard, It brings back lots of memories.
Evol is the best SY album fucking ever. End of story. Fuck. I fucking love that album. Edit: It's just so cohesive beginning to end, only 10 songs; no fillers, not self indulgent at all, so dark and bleak and intense, Marilyn Moore and Tom Violence have some of the best SY lyrics. FUCK
Bjork has 9 solo albums and Fantano gave his personal 7th favorite an 8/10. That's an amazing discography. I'm new to listening to Bjork albums , before I had only heard a few songs, but the 2 I've heard in full are Homogenic and Vespertine and both are mind-blowing masterpieces to me. So given I'm not as much of a critic as Fantano its amazing that I might have several Bjork albums I'll consider masterpieces still to get to.
surprisingly Vulnicura is my number one, i just don't know why, i'm SO in love with the sound of this album. most of the songs are composed perfectly and i wouldn't change anything in them. also, i started listening to Bjork from Vulnicura, i'm pretty sentimental and i just love this album so much.
I wasn't a fan of Bjork before watching this after it came out, but she was one that I always respected and wanted to appreciate. This gave me more of a sense of direction when confronting her discography and I ended up absolutely falling in love with her and her music. No artist has ever gotten me so deeply in touch with my emotions, spirituality and femininity. Her songs have helped me process some hard feelings and even when listening more casually, her songs are so thought-provoking and inspiring. My top 3 are Homogenic, Vulnicura and Post.
I completely agree with your choice, which is amazing I even took my nickname out of veneration for Vespertine! Vespertine is out of the world and Homogenic is indeed a stapple and I feel like they are related! Being Homogenic a very warm and emotional homage to friendship, Vespertine takes you on a cold trip back to some primitive womb of the universe, a weird familiar sensation of some beauty of the dark side, the melting of boundaries and the ecstasy of precise cold pleasure
1. Treasure 2. Blue Bell Knoll / Heaven or Las Vegas / Victorialand 5. Head Over Heels / Milk and Kisses 7. 4 Calendar Café / Garlands honorary mentions: The Pink Opaque for being a fantastic early compilation; all the really good EP's
You know what, I'm almost inclined to agree at this point. I already quite liked it when I first listened to Vespertine, and then really liked it upon second or third listen. But man, as the weeks go by and I keep revisiting the album, it just blows my mind more and more how utterly freaking beautiful Unison is. This has gotta be one of the best album closers of all time. It might have become my favourite track on the album by now, and that's some of the toughest competition around when songs like Aurora and Hidden Place are there. The conclusion: music is life
The way you described Vulnicura reminded me that the MoMA had a whole complex exhibit on Björk. They gave us headphones and preprogrammed iPods with an audio tour and it started with Debut. They showed all of her extravagant costumes. There was also a room where they played the Black Lake video with like 15-20 speakers playing different instruments. It was cool af
No joke Dancer in the Dark was the first movie I EVER cried at and the music is the most gorgeous Björk has ever made. Scatterheart (both the version in the movie and on SelmaSongs) is so innocent and heartbreaking.
I find it super interesting he say Bachelorette is about love, devotion and attraction. I always took it as being about being used, drained, broken and walked on by men (or lovers otherwise). Like a grand lamentation
Just wanted to mention that my first full Bjork album I ever listened to was "Medulla". Definitely opened me to a whole new world of music, melody and emotional expression.
My personal Björk: Worst to Best - 9. Volta - Timbaland could have been a great match with Björk, but something felt... off about this record 8. Utopia - Too new to put any higher, seems like a strange "sequel" to Vulnicura 7. Debut - Venus as a Boy will forever be one of Björk's best songs, but the record is a bit messy and doesn't stand up to her others very well. 6. Medulla - The beat-boxing and Tagaq's throat singing really ruined this otherwise very good record for me. 5. Biophilia - A beautifully arranged album with a cool ass gimmick. 4. Vulnicura - Heart-breaking, personal, and depressing. But it's maybe Björk's most thematically consistent works yet. 3. Post - The beginning of Björk's deep dive into electro-pop and electronic music. Fantastically fun and holds up. 2. Vespertine - The bride to Kid A's groom. These two went hand in hand back in the day, and this remains her most calming and fragile record. 1. Homogenic - A sweeping blockbuster of an album. Björk produced an absolute game-changer with this one, and the duo of Joga & Bachelorette alone could easily propel this album into legendary status. Not Björk's peak, as she will maybe never hit one, but Homognic will forever be the most experimental, icy, and beautiful albums in her discography for me.
i like Bjork's music since my childhood ..now i'm 39. She is amazing and yes, you need to digest her music. Her music is not fasfood...it's fusion cuisine
Skip- Ad Agreed! I think they have all had their place as my personal favorite at one time or another. Aerial is sometimes overlooked I think, it’s a master work!
I know hating Nickelback/Limpbiskit is cliche. But I feel vindicated everytime I hear it. Being the only one of my sixth grade fans who thought they sucked.
If your ear is trained by English, then you'll be certain that it's either Byork or Byerk, but its both and neither. Your lips make an O, the rest of your mouth makes an E, and that's the Ö sound.
My list: 1. Vespertine 2. Post 3. Homogenic 4. Biophilia 5. Debut 6. Medúlla 7. Vulnicura 8. Utopia 9. Volta This was really hard tho!! I love Vulnicura idk why it got so low on my list lmao
I agree. Vespertine is near flawless. Homogenic is strongly her second best. She had an undeniable way to make these alluring tracks driven by her love of Matthew. I will definitely have to revisit a few of her albums based on your comments. I love how well you were able to articulate your list and can appreciate the reference to followers like the discordant Animal Collective and her influence to art pop. Thanks for this!
Got to listen to a few of her albums after this video and I gotta say, the albums this woman was releasing 20 years ago could come out today and still be considered innovative and cutting edge.

TheNeedleDrop's facial hair: Worst to Best
Note that your current style should undoubtedly be worst. Your mustache is too high it looks like it's coming out of your nose.
I honestly love it. youre so mainstream with your view of mustaches bruuuugh. Anthony's face is always beautiful :*

can’t believe The Powers That B Part 1 is number 1!!! i totally agree!
Wow that's so funny
"I See Who You Are" off Volta is still one of my favorite Björk tracks ever.
same honestly not to be dramatic but I would totally die to that song lol. Especially the live version from Vulnicura live. In my opinion it’s better than the studio version, please listen to it if you haven’t already 😊
Worst to Best: The Cure, please.
YES PLEASE!
Fuck yeah
Pornography #1
Yes please
There's definitely no logic to Anthony Fantano's behavior.
he’s terribly terribly terribly moody.

This series has become my favorite thing about your channel. Bjork is really amazing but maybe a Sonic Youth worst to best? Or The Kinks???
Abel Ramirez SONIC YOUTH PLEASE!!!
Yeah Sonic Youth would be nice. Goo at #1.
Maybe if it’s the only Sonic Youth album you’ve heard
Greg Goat I have Evol , Daydream nation, Dirty, Sonic Nurse, Thousand leaves and Goo honestly I love them all but Goo was the first one I heard, It brings back lots of memories.
Evol is the best SY album fucking ever. End of story. Fuck. I fucking love that album. Edit: It's just so cohesive beginning to end, only 10 songs; no fillers, not self indulgent at all, so dark and bleak and intense, Marilyn Moore and Tom Violence have some of the best SY lyrics. FUCK

ABSOLUTE MAD LAD
Bjork has 9 solo albums and Fantano gave his personal 7th favorite an 8/10. That's an amazing discography. I'm new to listening to Bjork albums , before I had only heard a few songs, but the 2 I've heard in full are Homogenic and Vespertine and both are mind-blowing masterpieces to me. So given I'm not as much of a critic as Fantano its amazing that I might have several Bjork albums I'll consider masterpieces still to get to.
strong 8 to a light 9 for Vulnicura and not to mention Utopia as a decent 7. Pretty amazing.
There's only the best with Bjork.

90's Bjork is more than enough motivation to want to build a time machine. God fucking damn.
irvingcsaltzburg I WISH I COULD SAVE HER IN SOME SORT OF TIME MACHINE
save it for /mu/
Agreed
irvingcsaltzburg I agree wholeheartedly. 90s Bjork is damn uncharted adorable
surprisingly Vulnicura is my number one, i just don't know why, i'm SO in love with the sound of this album. most of the songs are composed perfectly and i wouldn't change anything in them. also, i started listening to Bjork from Vulnicura, i'm pretty sentimental and i just love this album so much.
Björk was and is so ahead of her time
Bjork is one of humanity"s masterpieces alway changing always experimenting, curious and creative. I love her. She is a goddess.

It's funny how he said that Medúlla is a difficult listen for newcomers to listen to when that album made me a Bjork fan.
Ikr?! XD
For most people i'd agree to what he said
I really struggled to enjoy Medulla after the Homogenic Selmasongs Verpertine trifecta. The catchiness was gone.
homogenic album cover was shot by nick knight and the garment was designed by alexander mcqueen,
to me it's björk at its peak.
Same, my personal favorite
I completely agree with your choice, which is amazing
I even took my nickname out of veneration for Vespertine!

Her best song ever is UNISON a masterpiece on its own ! Love that song from VESPERTINE
😍
Selmasongs is so underrated and should have been included here

No joke Dancer in the Dark was the first movie I EVER cried at and the music is the most gorgeous Björk has ever made. Scatterheart (both the version in the movie and on SelmaSongs) is so innocent and heartbreaking.
Well it's not a studio album.

I find it super interesting he say Bachelorette is about love, devotion and attraction. I always took it as being about being used, drained, broken and walked on by men (or lovers otherwise). Like a grand lamentation
Yes yes it could also be that
The video definitely seems to be about being used by managers and labels or something
HOT TAKE :
HIDDEN PLACES is the original TRAP SONG
what the fuck are you talking about
Agreed!!!!!
Wut
Fin fact: most percussions on Hidden place are made by the sound of shuffling cards
The melody that kicks off "Pagan Poetry" fits that bill as well
I almost jumped out of my seat for this video! Bjork is my favorite artist, thank you Anthony for this one!
I know you're a hipster anthony but putting Bjork 1977 at number 1 is a little excessive
Just wanted to mention that my first full Bjork album I ever listened to was "Medulla". Definitely opened me to a whole new world of music, melody and emotional expression.
Vulnicura at #7? I am... disgusted...💀
I agree. It should have tied at #1 with Debut, Post, Homogenic, Vespertine, Medulla, Volta, Biophilia, Utopia and all B-sides especially Charlene.
My personal Björk: Worst to Best -
9. Volta - Timbaland could have been a great match with Björk, but something felt... off about this record
8. Utopia - Too new to put any higher, seems like a strange "sequel" to Vulnicura
Her peak was Homogenic-Vespertine what do you mean she won’t ever peak
YES THIS YESSS
I agree with this so hard. Although I like Vespertine SLIIIGHTLY more than Homogenic
Why you don't make a TH-cam channel or a blog instead of posting large ass comment on TH-cam?
Fantano tells us to comment our thoughts and lists below, so I did.
i like Bjork's music since my childhood ..now i'm 39. She is amazing and yes, you need to digest her music. Her music is not fasfood...it's fusion cuisine
