My band Shader recorded at the Verve’s bassist Simon Jones studio near Chester.. We got to use all the Verve’s gear from A Northern Soul & Urban Hymn’s .. mind blowing experience..Si is a top bloke and bass player..we had some great chats about the early years of his band. One of the great bands with a natural musical chemistry for groove and sonic guitar soundscapes 🔥

This and their first A Storm in Heaven are superb.

Those first two Verve albums and the accompanying b-sides are phenomenal. I remember early Verve supporting Spiritualized in Norwich but I was too young to go, that must have been one of the most incredible gigs of all time! Luckily I got to see both of them in 97, Verve's set was mostly A Northern Soul and a Storm In Heaven with Bittersweet Symphony, Drugs Don't Work, Rolling People and Come on thrown in, one of the best gigs I've ever seen, transcendental!

May 8th 1992. SPIRITUALIZED. THE VERVE. NORWICH UEA.
May 8th 1992 Remains THE Greatest Night Of My Life.
I Was With 2 Friends That Night. My Friend "J" Was On Acid. My Other Friend "A" Was Drunk And I Was Stoned On Dope. We Experienced 3 Radically Different SPIRITUALIZED Performances. However All 3 Of Us Were Rendered Completely Speechless During Our Walk Back To The Car And Drive Home From The UEA To The Outskirts Of Norwich. I Think It Was Approximately 30 Minutes Before Any One Of Us Uttered A Word.
PS We All Went On To Take More Acid At The End Of That Night.
      An Unforgettable Experience.
I've Seen SPIRITUALIZED 17 Times Over My Lifetime And Remain My Favourite Band Of All Time. THE VERVE Are Fantastic But SPIRITUALIZED Are Something Else.

Not only is this album a dense and dark masterpiece, but the accompanying b-sides from the same period are _Masterplan_ level of quality. I can't think of many rock albums from the 90s that hit home more lyrically, particularly as a conflicted teenager growing up, often carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

  • @StrangeDevice
    @StrangeDevice 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

Em7: the waterbed of chords. When you first get into it, it feels kinda weird and wrong, a little dirty. Then you realize it’s the best thing ever and you don’t know why anyone would want to use plain old traditional beds ever again. Then you just get obnoxious with it and try to work it into everything you do, until your girlfriend can’t take it anymore and texts you to say she’s now dating the drummer. The DRUMMER!!!!!

This album hit me hard when I was 17. Wallowing in the sheer misery of it. Still listening to it 25 years later! I always thought McCabe and Jones had great chemistry - I love the interplay between guitar and bass on tracks like Drive You Home and So It Goes - but you’re right that Richard had a raw, powerful voice full of pain at this point. Definitely my favourite Verve album. Reprise is an incredible final track.

Loving the video Justin. Little story... The vending machine of feelings. I used to work with someone who was mates with The Verve at college. He was the only one with a house so you can imagine the stories and how much they relied on his roof. Anyway one of the things was storing things and the vending machine was one. It lived in his garage for 20 years. Sadly not too long ago he sold it to, I think it was the album artwork designer, the name escapes me for not very much in my humble opinion. I begged him to keep hold of it. I would have bought it myself if I wasn't earning peanuts.
My work mate raved about Nick McCabe, said he was so underrated. He used to play with a "tape loop echo effect" as he put it. Sounds insane. Top album

Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

Those songs have much more depth and meaning than what you hear played on the radio. I think many people (especially these days with streaming) don't realize what they are missing by only listening to singles. There can be some gems on an album that they miss out on by not taking time to fully listen all the way through. And I really must give this album a good listen. Thanks for the recommendation. 😊

So glad to see the ❤ shown for this album. In Canada, "On Your Own" got some mild rotation as the single. I was fortunate to see them just following the release of A Storm In Heaven on the side stage at Lollapalooza. You knew then that they had something special. But then came this record. The musicianship paired with some interesting production choices (especially the on the verge drum track on Life's An Ocean) made for one stellar sonic journey. What I most enjoyed is after getting intimately familiar with the album was hearing it pulled off live with such finesse. I don't think the band ever got their due in terms of their live shows and how they could bring that same spirit to it.

you know Justin, it's quite fantastic seeing all of the organic reverence you have for other bands/musicians... you have a different level of introspect from not only being a talented musician, but a successful one too.... nuthin' but good energy in this one, bub! keep it up and thanx again for helping me get my day going on the right direction once again. cheers, -Swiney

This was one of my favourite albums when it came out. Was about 17 or 18, I think. They weren't hugely popular in New Zealand at the time, and I was the only one in my friend group who had cottoned on to them when I heard On your Own, but that what was okay, that made it feel more special to me.

All of the band are on fire buts it’s a guitar masterclass.
I’m sure I read that Nick McCabe did a lot of the tracks in one take, and when asked to do another, he would ask why.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one Justin; this is how albums like these find new listeners to love them.
Such a brilliant rollercoaster of an albumThis is Music....History....and A Northern Soul - that one lights a fire inside me.
    So damned good.
There's also a great performance of theirs in Camden, from 1993 I think, floating around TH-cam.Highly recommended!

I bought this on cassette way back when, and spent a whole summer of unemployment going for walks by the sea with this purring away in the background on my Walkman...I would have bet everything I had (not much when I was out of work 🤣) that they were going to be taking over the world. First 2 Verve albums were truly immense!

  • @edwardmulholland7912
    @edwardmulholland7912 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks Justin,
It’s one of my favorite albums, I love it so much and have done since I bought it when it first came out. Ashcroft tapped into something powerful and personal which certainly reflected a lot of the band’s audience of that time. It still stands up today and it’s lyrical theme’s of existential despair and searching for hope is ultimately uplifting and a very rewarding listen.
Then there is the rest of the band who created that sound/magic. They were all great musicians that played like a group. McCabe is a genius with a guitar.
Strangely enough, I’ve been putting together a play list from the 92’ until 95’ period including stand alone singles and great “B-Sides”. Remember them? The Verve were great from the very start.

I'd defo agree about Ashcroft's voice. I saw the Verve at Glastonbury (2009?) while working and I was looking forward to it, but they were bloody exceptional. Their encore was one of the most sublime things I've ever seen.

Hi Justin, big fan. My ears pricked up when you mentioned Owen Morris. I've always been fascinated by the job role & personalities of music producers. If you compare say, Rick Rubin (hands off holistic approach with no signature sound) to Phil Spector (bringing a gun into the studio to encourage the artist to achieve his vision), they seem so different. I wondered what do you look for in a producer & how do you decide where the job starts & ends? Cheers, Dan

2:50 There's no way I'm going to be able to listen to 'A New Decade' again without hearing your wobble-singing! (And, surely, the Brian Ferry reference was prompted by the 'If love is a drug...' lyric in 'This is Music'.)
12:05 Richard Ashcroft's painting and decorating company went bust because he bought excessive amounts of paint. Too much emulsion, apparently...
It's great to hear you're so passionate about one of my favourite albums as well - and pleasantly surprising: I didn't have you down as a Verve fan. I have to say I've always preferred 'A Storm in Heaven' but this is still great. They had a strange career in reverse, I've always felt: they started experimental (even making saxophones sound great on a rock album) and became more mainstream with each album. I even thought 'A Northern Soul' was too mainstream when it came out, and missed out on getting one of the cardboard sleeves that were first released! I've regretted it ever since.

Didn't know this band had done much at all after bittersweet symphony. Turns out my husband has some of their albums back in his property in mexico and was really into them for a while. He kinda never really mentioned them cause he also lost track of them after a bit.

    Thank you!

I feel so lucky to have seen many of these tracks live when The Verve 'supported' Oasis at Earl's Court on their Be Here Now tour. It's funny how the press are banging on about the anniversary of Be Here Now this week and all I can think of is The Verve. When they left the stage that night, I remember turning to my friend and saying "how can you follow that?" We both knew we'd witnessed something special.
Both A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns masterpieces and History, lyrically, is probably some of Ashcroft's best songwriting. So, so glad you did this video, thank you!

Despite being a single, History has no real video because the band had already split up when it released. So Richard just got lots of earlier clips of the band edited together from other videos. Watch the video and you'll see the "Official Video" is just that.

This album was way ahead of its time. Like miles ahead and I think it was not given enough credit. Owen Morris almost had a complete breakdown recording it saying he would never wanna go through this chaos again (little did he know what would happen years later with wtsmg recording sessions...). It was recorded basically from dusk to dawn everyday and you cam feel it. Lyrically is superb.

Ever since I moved from Singapore to Finland about 5 years ago, I can listen to THIS album from start to finish on my long winter walks. It's just PERFECTION. Especially during the long, cold and dark nordic winters. Urban Hymns doesn't have that magic that Northern Soul has. Just my opinion.
