HI! I loved your video! It really made me feel like we are friends having a chat about something we are both passionate about. I am interested in helping people through massage but also am unsure of how to join/create a network to allow me to go deeper into discovering how i can help people while not causing harm to myself. Could you talk about self care and schools vs self teaching and what makes a person able to value themself as a massage therapist? Do you have to start out working with little boundaries or can you set them from the beginning?
Ive been a massage therapist for 23 years. I am currently working specifically with professional athletes and musicians. I honestly feel like a lot of people have lost their interest in this profession because low paying employers, costs in maintaining your license and making it so clinical. My career is fun. To say the very least. Perhaps I need to start sharing the other side of massage more geared towards sports. Also- body mechanics is everything. Save your hands and arms- use your forearm and elbow! Make sure your table isn’t too wide and touches your finger tips when you are standing next to it.
Sorry you are hurting, I am 66 and still doing deep tissue and sport massage without pain or hurting myself definitely always advice young massage therapists to keep own body healthy with working out, stretching and good diet and not over due it for your own ability line 8 massages is usually too much for a female massage therapist.
Thank you for bringing up empathy and compassion. I saw some people in massage school who didn't seem ready to cope with truly sick people people with disabilities or bodies they didn't approve of or understand. This profession is not for you if you can't cope with that
It's a passion and for people who want to leave the world a little ✨️ and better 🎉celebrate your success..I appreciate the business about to hit 10 years in the industry. And massage has been around for 5000 years ❤
If your body hurts, that means your body mechanics is off especially as a beginning therapist. The key to a long lasting career, you need great body mechanics
I’m so glad I found you! I never go my license due to fear of not passing the mblex because I lacked a background in the A&P. Now I’m working towards nursing but still plan to get my license for massage.
These are all so accurate. BTW those who throw body mechanics at everything...stop! Body mechanics will not fix an overworked schedule and a therapist with no respect for their limits.
I'm going to school to become a massage therapist my mother told me since I was a little girl I had healing hands. One time (when I was 6) my mother had a pinched nerve in her neck and I was able to pop it out without hurting her. 🧘🏻♀️
It’s definitely hard on the body to extend the life of my career I switched to working only on female clients and it helped with the boundaries issues of me clients sharing their intimate stories I married so can’t be doing all of that. Lastly I increased my prices!! Might be a huge jump but at this point I rather work less hour for more than tons of hours for less!!
@Holistic Lifestyle Therapist how we're you able to advertise for female client base only? I would like to have females only in my Spa when I start up next year just wasn't sure I could do it legally, I prefer females only because it's easier for me physically to work on than men.
@@Mylayn05 If you want my opinion, (I have only female clientelle as well) you can say that you specialize in women's healthcare. Or choose a service such as prenatal or post partum where only women would use this service. And of course your branding and website should reflect what clientelle you want to attract
@@ayab0607 thank you so much for responding! I just didn't know how to advertise just having women to massage is so much easier for me even if they are deep tissue
I'm freshly graduated and agree with everything you've said. At least in the area that I live in the places that will work with you to help you grow as an LMT start at about $30-$35 an hour. Even just heard of a place that does a base salary pay on top of the pay for any massages done so you get paid even if there isn't a steady flow of clients! Yes there are near minimum wage pay rates for some places but most likely they are not a good environment to start or stay in. Hence the high rate of burn out! An entertaining video while still being educational would be the common red flags to watch out for in massage jobs! It was always a fun discussion to have at my school anyways.
That's awesome that they do that in your area. Here, it's not like that at all. I'm wishing you much luck in your bodywork career. I will totally make a red flag video!! I can think of quite a few.
I have been considering going to massage school for several years now, and just as I was getting closer to pull the trigger, and as my best friend went to school and is now completed his program and doing fairly well for himself. I actually ended up fracturing my proximal phalanx of my pinky finger and it healed with a malunion. I had to get several x-rays and CT scans and I feel like my hand has a lot more information and arthritis already setting in. However there is a part of me that thinks maybe Doing that massage therapy program could actually be better for my hand in someway. Because I am getting more exercise for it. I’ve always enjoyed learning about natural alternative remedies through herbalism as well as essential oils. I know they have different techniques where you can limit the use of your hands and also use other parts of your body like your elbows or even bamboo etc. i’m not sure I have such a good opportunity to go to school in Texas because it’s so close to where I’m at. Plus it’s a very affordable program. I just don’t know if I’m ready to commit to that yet. I would look at doing massage more like a side hustle part-time on the evenings and weekends around a full or part-time job at hopefully offers benefits
I’m 16 and considering this after high school! Mostly for my parents and my own pains (I like to solve my own problems lol) and this career seems to be something I want :)
Thank you for this video! I went to school for massage over 10 years ago and came across your channel. I appreciate your genuine and authentic personality and value your insight on this wonderful field of work💜

I'm going back to school for massage. It's good know these things before I start. I'm going into this with my eyes wide open. I've been working in hospice for years and really understand the boundaries that are needed as well the importance of self-care. My biggest worry is the pain aspect. My body has taken a lot over the years as a music therapist.
I think there are a lot of things that you can do to prevent the pain part, like choosing lighter forms of massage, working out, stretching, and watching how much you work, while also remembering good posture. Sounds like you're not a stranger to helping people!
Why is it that employers are so difficult to hire new massage therapists with less experience? How do they expect us to be perfect after leaving school? I just don't understand.
From being in school and from what actual massage therapist have told me was they want people who are going to work muscles and not using repetitive spa techniques with minimal pressure. Get out of routine and find how you can be different from other massage therapist, mainly working on people’s issues and listening to them.
I want to go go to school for massage therapy too. It’s cool to see this and working in a Hand & Stone right now definitely helps see first hand the pros and cons of being a therapist. I definitely see my self taking this as more of a part time gig and fall back as opposed to a full time career. Working as a dancer and choreographer I think that would be best so I don’t burn myself out for that. But I would love to work with people and help them with their body needs.
Thank you for keeping it real!! A lot of what you mentioned is also avoided being talked about amongst mts. And just today i was mentioning to a client how we were taught to not get personal and they were also very confused lol
Nobody/nothing is perfect but you came close with what you said, how you say things along with your natural appearance, wow...A lot of the things you say I was already imagining them, even though I knew very little about the field. Throughout my life I have helped many people with healing their injury body's. This is why I want to get into the field. blessings.
I had to leave my MT job 6 years ago because my body was breaking down. I didn’t put enough effort into good body mechanics and I worked at a very busy chiro office. Even though I made $35/hour, I ended up leaving because I had tendinitis in both of my arms. The cancelations are also what drove me to leave, my pay was all over the place and I wanted something more steady. I’m planning on getting re-licensed to practice again and start it as my side hustle 😁
I work as a Chiropractor Assistant with a wonderful doctor. I have the option to grow becoming a massage therapist. Free professional therapy from the doctor. I'm learning the spine and doing well in office. I'm also a caregiver and it helps overall.

A good chiropractor could take care of that wrist for you real quick. The bones in the wrist are tricky to deal with, even for the good ones but getting rid of carpal tunnel or a misalignment that is causing nerve pain is not impossible.

Hi miss, I am 60years old however I wanted to go to massage school to get away from being a CNA but I am reading alot of comments and am wondering now if they would hire a new sixtysomething grad. Do you think its wise at my age because maybe I wouldnt get a job after. Thk you💝p.s. it was either massage therapy or LPN.
Hey Anita! In my class, we had men and women of all ages, one student was in her 50s and our instructor was too (and she owns her own business) I think any age is great, especially if you're in good shape. We also had people in our class who were previously CNAs or nurses. Trust your gut! Hope this helps
$14/ hour? This is minimum wage in Ontario.. ($14 CAD) Thanks for the input. Considering RMT school. I am strong but i'm kinda skeptical about the intense labour and getting injured.
Thank you so much for your advice. I was wondering if I go to massage therapy school that requires 500hrs will I be able to work at Massage places such as a Spa?
If you are attending massage school and you're trying to massage while in school you might only be able to do apprenticeship. I highly doubt a chiropractor office is going to hire somebody who is not licensed.
Thanks for being transparent (: On average how many clients would you say is your limit in order to care for yourself as well? One thing that I ran into about becoming a LMT is that (not sure if its required) needing to get some insurance? Im assuming liability insurance.... ? Someone mentioned how it became too much for them as a LMT because they would pay around $400 for their insurance. That sounds a little crazy to me, do you have anything to comment about in regards to being a LMT and and have insurance for safety reasons. Thanks in advance..
@@rudyalberto5467 I think it depends on the type of lymphatic massage. If you work for Oncology Centers or Post-Surgical Centers sure there's work. If you work for yourself then you'll have to work a little harder
I was wondering is there a particular month you have to register into massage therapy school or can you just register whenever you want in the year ??? Also how much is the payment plan each month can you pay in cash or you have to pay with credit card ?

Hi I enjoy listening to this video. I learn a lot about massage therapist. I am considering changing my career to massage therapist for a year now ,but I am not sure if its for me. I like working and helping people. I am 22yo and I am pretty active I go 4-5 times a week in gym. So I would say I am pretty strong and I take care of my body also eating healthy. The only thing that is stopping me is because I am blind in my left eye and I couldn't see well at night including rooms that have dim lights (nightblindness). I don't know if my visual disability would affect my chance to becoming a great massage therapist. Also my other concern is that do you think it is harder for a male massage therapist to get a job in a spa or clients? I hope you reply because I am very interested about this career and want to learn more about it. Thank you
Hi! Thanks for your comment! I've actually have met and heard of blind massage therapists! In fact, in school, we had to practice giving a massage without our sight, because we are trained to feel the muscle tissue underneath the superficial skin. It's a technique that helps you understand the different "textures" of differrnt muscle fibers so that you can access and manipulate the muscles effectively. You may find that being partly blind makes you a better therapist. Also! If you're healthy that's even better! You're less likely to burn out. Hope this helps!
Hi Syd! Not sure I know what you mean by the stress level but yes there are massage therapists who specialize in hands. There's such thing as reflexology for the hands as well. Hope this answers your question!
I've met physical therapists that were also massage therapists although I don't know what order they did their schooling. I 100% believe it's worth it, especially if you know how to work for yourself or add it to your existing practice.
Massage Therapy is a CALLING. You either have the gift to heal humanity or you don’t. It is not like selling cars or computers. You are literally being used as a channel to help others come to their own healing ❤️🩹 through the purest therapeutic touch. I have been serving weary souls since 2003 (19 years) from having my own practice of 16 years to now working for a franchise temporarily part time.
It’s physically demanding but also energetically, your working with different people all day long , you need to ground and protect your energy ( Reiki really helped me) or spiritual baths , to not take on others stories … clients tell you things that they don’t even tell their partners, I’ve heard it all … abuse / accidents/ depression etc etc and being aware of others personal hygiene, it isn’t always of your standard
@@truemassagebodywork Thank you, for your response. So this is likely a continuous issue? I have been of and on with going to school for massage because of pain. I live to work and have a life after work to have fun, not being in pain.
@@faithbranshaw6574 Everyone is different, but I have an injury that also makes it painful. If you choose lighter types of modalities like Swedish or energy work, or even cupping, rather than deep tissue and sports massage you could manage if you're in good physical shape
Well congrats on your journey. I'm in Massage school right at moment and hope to be done in August.. and my goal is to be where you are. You are an inspiration.. thank you and keep up the good work
Are people actually naked when you massage them ? I'm 23 and I'm a virgin. Waiting for after marriage 😅 I've never seen anyone else 😱🤦🏾♀️ and can you make a video please on the workouts/stretches you did ? And uniques you were taught ?
I always drape my clients. For post op, it is up to them if they want to be nude, but I always get clear consent. Even then, I bring disposable underwear and bras for modesty if they choose. I will absolutely make a video on stretches and good posture for massage and different techniques! subscribe for more :)
That's awesome. Thank you ! I really appreciate it. I subscribed after the 1st video I saw of yours . Looking forward to seeing more of your content ! Excited for that video 😁👍🏾I'll make sure to tell my classmates about your channel when I start 🤗
It actually depends on what modality you do. You can do all the stretching and massages you want but it's called repetitive stress injury you're doing the exact same moves you're going to increase some inflammation in your muscles. It's definitely a physical job. Her video was very well-informed but she's leaving out a good chunk of details that they don't tell you in school
@@sarcasticj Thanks for your insight! It's hard to fit in all the key points of this profession in just one video but hopefully I can share more on this topic. It's true that it depends on the modality. That's why I dongle do deep tissue or sports anymore or work with men

Thank you for this great video 👌🏻
You're so welcome Mario!
$14/ hour? This is minimum wage in Ontario.. ($14 CAD)
Thanks for the input. Considering RMT school. I am strong but i'm kinda skeptical about the intense labour and getting injured.
Yes $14! If you know your body mechanics and don't push yourself, you could avoid injury.
What if I have existing back pain where the severity of it varies by the day? Can I still make this work or is this not the career for me?
I love your video. It's very informative and definitely an eye opener. Are you aware of Reiki?
Body mechanics are extremely important!
Yes, I have friends who know Reiki and I think it's a great practice!
Thank you so much for your advice. I was wondering if I go to massage therapy school that requires 500hrs will I be able to work at Massage places such as a Spa?
Yes, if the state you live in requires 500 then you should be able to work in any spa, chiropractic office, ect with your license. And you're welcome!
@@truemassagebodywork Okay! Thanks again... you was very Informative, & have a blessed day😊🌅
If you are attending massage school and you're trying to massage while in school you might only be able to do apprenticeship. I highly doubt a chiropractor office is going to hire somebody who is not licensed.
@@sarcasticj okay...& that's why we have Massage school for all opportunities for individuals future 😊
My MT talks a lot about her other clients and personal things about friends
I'm sorry to hear that :/

You're so welcome!
My limit varies on different factors but typically I don’t need to see more than 12 clients/week - also I’ll make a video about that!
What are your thoughts about lymapthic massage therapist ??? And also how many years of school Is it to be certified ??
I am a lymphatic massage therapist, in FL usually you just need to have some continued education credits. I was in school for about 8 months
Do you think lymphatic massage their is always a need for it so its easy to find work?? Even if your a younger gentleman?
@@rudyalberto5467 I think it depends on the type of lymphatic massage. If you work for Oncology Centers or Post-Surgical Centers sure there's work. If you work for yourself then you'll have to work a little harder
I was wondering is there a particular month you have to register into massage therapy school or can you just register whenever you want in the year ??? Also how much is the payment plan each month can you pay in cash or you have to pay with credit card ?
@@truemassagebodywork I’m getting my massage license now I’ve failed it couple of times but I’m also going for nursing which location your spa business is at??
I have over 3000 clinical hours in my degree in Canada its 30 an hour and if your working 20 hours at ome place I can 20 hours at another
Oh wow! can't imagine how you work all those hours!
That will work to your advantage! For sure
Glad I found you:) new sub

Thank you Jackson! Glad it was helpful!
I have been doing massages for 25 years now and I end up with carpal tunnel I end up all type of pain
Is there a such thing as a hand massage therapist? If so, what is the stress level?
Hi Syd! Not sure I know what you mean by the stress level but yes there are massage therapists who specialize in hands. There's such thing as reflexology for the hands as well. Hope this answers your question!
Great video. Have you seen physical therapist going back to school to study massage therapy? Is it worth it as a part time career? Thank you
I've met physical therapists that were also massage therapists although I don't know what order they did their schooling. I 100% believe it's worth it, especially if you know how to work for yourself or add it to your existing practice.
@@truemassagebodywork Appreciate your insight and your words of encouragement! Thank you 😊
yes its more benifit
Massage Therapy is a CALLING. You either have the gift to heal humanity or you don’t. It is not like selling cars or computers. You are literally being used as a channel to help others come to their own healing ❤️🩹 through the purest therapeutic touch. I have been serving weary souls since 2003 (19 years) from having my own practice of 16 years to now working for a franchise temporarily part time.
Yes to everything you said!!

What does it take to be a massage therapist school wise?
Hi Sarah! I have a video on this!
So important! love your takeaways!
Good day my friend I am looking for a school do you know any school that does sciatic an herbala medicine at the same time can you please let me know
Fantastic job
Thank you very much!
Great information in your video.
Thank you! Let me know what you want to watch.
@@truemassagebodywork did your pain go away, or is this after every massage?
@@faithbranshaw6574 I usually feel pain after doing 3 sessions. So I feel it pretty much everytime I work depending on the type of session
If you choose lighter types of modalities like Swedish or energy work, or even cupping, rather than deep tissue and sports massage you could manage if you're in good physical shape

which schools would you recommend in Jacksonville area?
I didn't go there so I can't recommend any schools in that area
Jacksonville, Florida ? If so, I would recommend the Alpha School of Massage
How long have been doing this??
6 years!
Well congrats on your journey.
I'm in Massage school right at moment and hope to be done in August.. and my goal is to be where you are. You are an inspiration.. thank you and keep up the good work
@@aakoku32 Thank you so much! I hope you're on the list so we can stay connected, would love to stay tuned for your journey!
@@smiles1319 Thank you!
You can try Shiatsu massage, is a type of japonese massage with your clothes on.
I never see naked people. You learn draping in school. But if you're afraid of getting undressed. Try Thai Massage. It's done fully clothed.
Where are you located at
37 hours a week my goodness
I know right??
Um, this is making me almost want to back out immediately, I don’t care for hurting my body…
There's ways to prevent getting hurt, don't worry! Stretching, staying fit, and proper body mechanics
That's why I dongle do deep tissue or sports anymore or work with men
@@sarcasticj hello, do you have social media? Interested in the subject you seem to have some insight on.
As a massage therapist having a regular strength training practice will do wonders for longevity.
14 / hours...is that commission based? or wage based?
that one was wage based
Hello I am a RMT in Canada I have over 3000 clinical hours in my degree I make excellent money but I am looking at moving to the states. Being as I have 3-4 xs that of an average american degree. I would assume my added experience would work out to a higher pay ?
I m from Canada too, which school did you go to ?
Experience doesn't always lead to more pay, depending on where you work. I would recommend starting your own practice
In school did you have to undress for massages or could you wear a sport bra and shorts
I answer this in the video I'm posting tomorrow!
Hiii 😍
Hi!
I dunno about the pay.. Definitely couldn't jump in while trying to raise a family.
It really depends on what area you go into and if you have your own clients or not. Something to consider!
Are there any recommended schools Or colleges for Universities?
Well it depends on what area you are in, i'm in florida where the education requirements are really high. So I'd probably recommend a florida program. But I can do a video on what to look for in a school
How long was the school ????
Hi, I was in school for 750hrs, but it was full time and finished in two semesters.
D I you own the company.
Yes, I am the owner.
A modality video of your favorite techniques and why you like one over another.
I like Myofacial Massage Therapy
Effective and less ware and tear
