I can so relate to this woman on so many levels I am a survivor since age 5 to present of being abused in all levels and to think she is a psychiatrist actually giving advice but still making me relive my trauma.

I completely second Jeanine's thoughts about early intervention, peer support & compassion from the society with regards to this silent killer called "Mental Health Disorder" ! It surely requires a more global perspective and a much wider therapeutic approach for all !

I am not ashamed of having a mental illness, but I never disclose to anyone.

I'm glad you're not ashamed, because that might lead me down that road. I am suicidal, so there ya go.

First of all bosses in companies, Management/CEO/Principals/Managers in academic/non academic fields should be tested (normally like blood tests) and if they are mentally fit for the positions, then they should be selected to become leaders. This can be done like making identity card by Govt. This way society welfare will be taken care of and economy will improve along with protecting such professions in medical fields. Nice speech ma'am. Thank you👏👏👌

Seriously? Mental illness can hit at any time. Life isn't static, things and circumstances change which can have a dramatic affect on someones health.

Why was it necessary to point out that the man who thanked her was an African American? This woman is dissing mental health professionals unfairly. Just like with other doctors you sometimes have to find the right fit. You also need to be willing to do your part of the work. She doesn't sound to me like she really had a serious depression, but she's learned the symptoms and she is using them to push her own agenda. I have mental illness, and I know the suffering and the hard work and the relapses and how it feels picking yourself up again with the help of extremely supportive mental health professionals and with peers and social supports. You don't just google and form a sunshine club. I don't buy her story.

As a mental health professional, this video further stigmatizes mental illness and complicates the path to recovery. To begin with, psychiatrists primary function is to prescribe medicine. Psychologists, though varying by theory, usually spend the first session cultivating the therapeutic alliance and figuring out which treatment program to implement. Therapy requires work from both the therapist and the client, so it is important not to assume that by paying a therapist they will solve all of your problems. Peer support, which she mentions, is also a great resource. However, her account of her experience with the African American man was self-ingratiating and lacked racially awareness. Additionally, individuals may need to reach stage 4 prior for treatment to prove effective. A person has to be willing to receive help and that might require hitting rock bottom. I understand where she was trying to go with her discussion early treatment but the way it was phrased delegitimized the experience of many people. And lastly, people with mental illness can lead functional lives. The term "survivor" over-sensationalizes mental health and is not accurate regarding the journey to and of recovery.

Claude Rawson This “mental health professional” lost all credibility when starting his response as one. Right there. Pfsssssst.
When he identified as a MH”professional” while minimizing the role of peer support, I knew right off the bat he hasn’t a clue what peer support is... and this talk has been so strongly in favor of peer support vs. the ‘traditional’ routes.
This person showed no capability whatsoever in understanding the experience if emotional distress.
AND THAT... IS A HHUUGGEE PROBLEM.
Bottom line? That MH professional needs people to stay sick and in need if whatever he thinks he gas to help. The speaker, on the other hand, already commented on the efficacy of that talk therapy and pill therapy, and wants something entirely different.
The first best place to start reading? Go to “mad in America” and spend hours there. Then go to National Empowerment Center. There is soooo much life beyond that dude who thought this excellent video was bad. Oh my god...

The problem is is that professionals think they have it all figured out. If they did, mental illness would be on the downslope but it's not. It's rising. The MH system hasn't a clue how to help people- just medicate and hospitalize.

The psychologists toolbox contains over 400 different theraputical approaches. The only one proven more effective than talking to a close empathetic friend is CBT. Philosophy and mushrooms are the answer along with a well structured life.

@@AngiePeacockMSW And so many with serious mental illness can't even get into the hospital or get their meds, forget about finding a psychiatrist that will really listen and stick with them to recovery. It's a mess. Peer support is great, but it's only one small part of the massive overhaul that we need in the US mental Healthcare system.
