John Frusciante's favorite amp!? (I Could Have Lied, Red Hot Chili Peppers)

  • In this video I'll show you how to get the solo tone for the song I Could Have Lied from the Red Hot Chili Peppers! It's one of my favorite solos of John Frusciante and I'm very happy that I found out what he used in the studio to record this song. John actually talked about this amp in some interviews in the early 90's but he never mentioned what songs or parts he used it on......
    If you're still not convinced he used the Fender H.O.T. for the recording of this solo and think he used the preamp of the mixing desk or a 4-track recorder you can watch this video here: reelClQYdN...

    Very interesting breakdown of this amp. It feels like it's a nasty low-fi amp but John pushed the nastiness so hard it turned in on itself and became very expressive and beautiful! :)

    You know? In Anthony Kiedis book, he writes that when he and John wrote this song John came over his house with a small Fender amp.

    I really miss this raw BSSM style sound that they used to have. This amp definitely is what was used on that song. Also, something interesting I noticed is that John's general clean tone for BSSM had a pretty deep mid scoop at 1khz and I wonder if that was done in post or something. But that mid cut definitely makes the guitar sound thinner like BSSM had.

    Dude, I have a Fender Atomic SE that has some presets that I thought the crunch tone was really cool with the Strat. Now you've shown how far the rabbit hole goes. I will never sell this amp again ha ha ha.
    Thanks!

    Holy shit this particular solo was what made me want to play the guitar when I was 10 years old and it's still one of my favorite solo tones of all time and I often wondered about how it was recorded. I've never heard anybody nail that tone like you just did here. Coincidentally I'm currently looking for an affordable solid state practice amp with reverb to play jazz with my ES-175. Now I need to get my hands on one of these.

    I read this before in interviews and I think even Scar Tissue book. This is definitely it, you nailed it again. Another interesting note, they were gonna use the demo version of this track bc of the emotion and rawness but Brenden oBrien ended up putting some small touches on it.

    Hey man, great job on the channel! I’m hoping you can decode how he got the sound of the rhythm guitar in Under the Bridge. I’ve NEVER heard anyone recreate it accurately, especially when you listen to the original multitracks. The left channel is fuller and bassy (but still very tight, with a warm growl), while the right channel is thin and bright, almost to the point of being harsh. When they blend, it’s magic. I’ve tried everything to get that same punchy, tight, clean yet crunchy sound and have never truly matched it. From the way it sounds, I think it’s a JCM800, either stereo-mic’d or mixed with another amp. Plexis like the SuperBass are not that tight in the low end, which is why I’m suspicious the whole tone might just be a JCM.
    Also, did you notice in Funky Monks that his HOT amp is stacked on top of another practice amp in a few scenes? It looks like a 1990 Fender Sidekick bass practice amp to me. Which makes me wonder… are there any songs where he was running both of those in stereo, split with the stereo chorus?…

    Great vid man! But i do remember reading that john said he pluged straight to the mixing board and increased the gain on the board.
    In his solo album niadre lades and just a t shirt he does the same with his solos,just plug direct to the 4 track tape , increase the gain(and lower the vol) and the sounds are pretty similar to the i could have lied solo.

    • @RedHotChiliRiffs
      @RedHotChiliRiffs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The amp’s built in spring reverb sounds exactly the same as the reverb you hear on the record. You can also hear some room sound on the actual record. If John used the direct into the mixing desk method the sound would be completely dry…..

    sounded great! does the neve not overdrive at all? I don't have any experience with them. The HOT amp sounded right. thanks for taking the time to do this. It's neat you were able to find a HOT amp. I haven't looked in a while, but when I did look I couldn't find one. it's awesome you are able to work backwards to make a best guess on what was used and how to get the tones. I enjoy your channel.

    Good video. I’m just curious, where do you get the info that John used this amp on 11 songs? I don’t recall reading that anywhere. Also, the tone on the Les Paul version is way too clean to even compare here. John said he used the Les Paul on Righteous and the Wicked and he hated that tone. So I seriously doubt he used the Les Paul on his most iconic solo. There’s also a part of me that thinks he used the bridge pickup on the solo, but I might be wrong about that.

    He said in a guitar magazine interview around BSSM, that the solo to I could have lied was recorded with his old crusty stringed Jaguar by the way. I could try and locate it but not sure I have the time right now.. I think your strat sounded super close though. I’m also conflicted as I’m sure he also read that he went “straight into the mixing board” for the solo for this too, but the fender HOT sounded just like it, even the reverb!

      @RedHotChiliRiffs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve recorded a video where you can hear what it sounds like if you plug straight into the 1073 preamp and what it sounds like with the saturation of a 4-track. instagram.com/reel/ClQYdNRPoRL/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

      @@RedHotChiliRiffs Thanks for this, I think you're right on the money with the HOT amp and the Dyna comp to be honest. It sounds the closet I've ever heard. However, I would love to hear it with a Jaguar neck pick up, as he said he recorded the solo on the "crusty stringed" '66 jaguar. Are you convinced it was the strat yourself? To be honest, he does accidently get guitars mixed up in many interviews. He calls his '55 strat a '57 more times than I can remember in the californication interviews, so who knows! What we do know, is how ridiculously close you've got here. Thanks for the great content!
