Interestingly I was commissioned by Mr Altman to faux marble the columns many years ago during the restoration and am very happy to see my work is standing the test of time.

Thank you for this journey. I must visit this place before I die. It does appear that my ancestor, whose surname I carry, and which Sir Paul called, is buried right there in this cemetery.

I never knew this amazing piece of history was based in Barbados. I was definitely unfortunate not to have known about this treasure during my several visits to Barbados in my career. Tourism sometimes isolates visitors from important things and confines them to sea, sand, sun and sponsored short trips to few selected sites.

Wow this is amazing. Who would believe ull find this piece of his in the capital of Barbados. A must visit
I guess it’s a technicality of which is older (the synagogue in Curaçao or this one). I have visited the one in Curaçao which also claims to be the oldest (I guess since it’s been in continuous use since the 1600s. In any event, I took exception to a few things the tour guide says:
1. He never mentions if the original members were Sephardic or Ashkenazi (he, however, mentions Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Judaism. The synagogue in Curacao is (and always has been) a Sephardic synagogue (founded by refugees from the Spanish Inquisition). In fact, one of the early member families invented the famous Curacao Liqueur.
2. When showing the Hanukkiah (Hanukkah Menorah), he says "the festival of lights which Christmas is a part of" and "Hanukkah is the equivalent of Christmas...same thing". There is absolutely no relationship between the two holidays (just they usually fall in the same month).
3. When showing a Torah scroll, he mentions that the Jewish Bible is the "Old Testament". No Jew would ever say that.

He's trying to make it relatable to the guy who is not Jewish by contrasting it to what's familiar to him.
Of course if he was giving this tour to a Jewish person he wouldn't say "old testament " and equate Hannukah to Christmas.

Very true. Interestingly, there is a whole history on Barbados of Jewish enslaved people and freed people who were Jews because of their former owners.

What do you mean by “just open it up?” I haven’t lived in Barbados for several years but I’ve been inside the synagogue and museum. This video shows that a lot has changed and improved since I was last there. Will definitely be checking it out on my next visit.
