Way to go Lady! I’m an above knee amputee and also went through seven years of severe pain, more than 30 surgeries and people thinking I was insane to choose amputation. My life has been so much better since and it’s amazing to not have pain anymore. Just a quick caution from a fellow amp though... I noticed in the video when you took your liner off you have a big purple blotch in the bottom of your stump. Please keep in mind that’s caused by a poor fitting socket/liner and usually indicates pistoning (your residual limb moving up and down within the liner/socket causing suction changes and, essentially, a giant hicky). This is bad for skin, circulation and can cause pain and blisters. If this is still happening please talk to your prosthetics team and get them to sort it. If they are of the “being an amputee means some degree of pain/discomfort so get used to it and suck it up” camp PLEASE find a new team ASAP as a properly fitted socket will never hurt or cause skin irritation or discolouration suck as I saw in this video.
So happy for you that your life is continuing along the path you want. Stay strong and you have every reason to be proud!

Sometimes difficult choices need to be made. Good for you on changing your destiny. I broke my ankle in 1991 due to stepping in a rutt. I had at least 1 surgery per year trying to fix it but nothing ever helped. I had my ankle fused at one point then about a year later they removed all the pins thinking the pain was caused by that....nope. Finally in 1999 I decided I'd had enough pain and pills so I had them remove it. Scary choice but I figured ANYTHING has got to be better than this constant pain. This many years on and I have very little trouble with my LBKA. The rest of me...not so hot but hey....at least I can still get around. No regrets.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m nearly 5 years into life with debilitating CRPS following an accident in which I shattered my heel and required several surgeries after the first was botched. Despite having both a Spinal Cord Stimulator and DRG implanted to help with pain, things are only getting worse. My orthopedic surgeon wants me to come in next month to discuss amputation, although mine would likely not work since my CRPS has already spread to much of my body. Wishing her all the best

Hi i just saw this. There are a few peripheral nerve surgeons in the US, one of them lives an hour away from me. He has had CRPS success stories. May be worth looking into before making that decision. Look up Healing Hands of Nebraska, Dr Aguila. Also has videos here on TH-cam. :)

IN 2004 my left knee was damaged in a fall. My right knee was already damaged. Before that I used to roller skate 5 times a week, or go cycling or dancing. Because of the bigoted company I worked for I was eventually fired and lost my health insurance. The ensuing complications made my diabetes much worse, caused a cascade of other health issues that I can't afford to resolve. If all that could have been avoided by cutting off my leg, I would have done it in a heartbeat. You made a great decision to get on with your life.

Jo is 1 year past her first amputation and a few months past her "re=amputation" where she had to have part of it taken off some more sicne the first surgery messed up.

Ve been dealing with what remains of a leg after 3 brutal motorcycle accidents first one in 1992. Despite my pleas no one will remove it I keep getting surgeons with fanciful ideas of cutting muscle out of my right leg and transplanting it n my left and cutting arteries out of other parts of my body and also transplanting them to create more blood flow. They want to do everything but what I ask them to do which is to take my pain away.
Who did you go to, I need someone who listens.

      Annette Melnychuk
My doctor helped me find a surgeon who was sympathetic to my plight and I’ll be under the knife on August 7th. I knew I found the right surgeon when I mentioned to him that I was trans and that I understand he’s going to probably want a psychological evaluation to determine in order to prove that I’m not experiencing body dysmorphia; a Psychological condition that dries otherwise healthy people to amputate otherwise healthy limbs, He looked at his chart and said that wouldn’t me necessary. For once someone understood that body dysmorphia has nothing at all to do with gender dysphoria. He especially didn’t have any problems with it when I told him that I’ve been living like this since I’ve been 16 years old; I’m 44 now, And while I should have amputated this leg years ago I just wasn’t ready to admit defeat.
Now my biggest problem is SSDI/SSI is jerking me around, they are telling me that I have to wait six months after the surgery to possibly get benefits. They told me that most people with amputations return to work to which my response was I’m a motorcycle mechanic how am I supposed to return to work when I can’t shift a motorcycle without a left leg. I can’t convert a customers motorcycle with an electronic shifter just so I can take it for a test ride. I’ve been a tech for 19 years my career is over.
Everyone I know that had an amputation got SSDI/SSI but they all were approved before Trump.
