  • It's a tradition: Every year I swear I'm going to get my handcrafted presents finished with time to spare...and every year I'm crafting right up til the last moment. Sometimes beyond. Tis the season to procrastinate.

Any Red Dwarf reference in everyday life warms my heart! My sister and I have a shorthand: whenever she's considering buying something dumb, especially from an advertisement, we refer to it as a "walrus-polishing kit" (I believe from "Better Than Life")

You know what? I finished all my presents early this year. In light of your title (poor life choices), I spent three whole months making elaborately woven baskets, crochet accessories, hand carved stamps, and handmade candies. I gave the presents away. I feel unsatisfied. It was not worth three months of time since I then had the time to convince myself that nothing I made was good enough. Wait until the last minute please…. The grass is always greener. I miss my procrastination.

I have a ziplock bag with several remnants of shawl in a ball, I'm pretty sure I have some of that colourway lol. But don't feel bad, I gifted my sister a purse with the hardware and fabric for a strap inside, my mom a sweater without the neck ribbing, and my partner pyjamas that still needed hemming. 😂😭 They're all sitting on my sewing table again, waiting for finishing.

I'm actually getting back into knitting. Last year I realized how much yarn I had been given (Mom said she was doing Swedish death cleaning - which included Grandma's SABLE and a coworker had a bad pregnancy that lead to sever hand pain) that wasn't going to work with projects I had in mind for myself. So I burnt myself out making large, complicated Christmas gifts to use it up.
They were all loved and I can fit my yarn in a five drawer dresser. Mostly.

Getting a machine is not cheating by any means. I started on a blanket back in march 2022, and have yet to have progressed due to other more pressing sewing projects. If I could sit with a machine for an hour I would probably be more efficient and would probably feel better about my progression. Maybe next year I'll treat myself.

Ah Red Dwarf, that takes me back. My laid back English teacher in highschool brought in tapes of Red Dwarf to watch during class instead of.. teaching most of the time. He only regretted it when someone asked what smeghead meant haha. I crochet a baby blanket after his wife announced her pregnancy. I procrastinated but finished just before they brought the baby home- was dog sitting while they were at the hospital, finishing it as the dog's ate before a walk.

I've been cross stitching most of my life (over 40 years now)

I started knitting in my early-to-mid 30's (over a decade)
I've been spinning a couple of years less than that, but it's sporadic.
I started crochet less than 5 years ago.

I once made all my yule gifts in August, I thought. Then at the last minute realized I missed my sister's new partner. So I was still making stuff at the last minute. Note I always do two socks at the time on a circular needle because otherwise the second sock never happens or it comes out a different size due to my tension issues. My feet have certainly grown as an adult, every kid made them half a size bigger and just general spread due to gravity means I went from a 6 at 21 to an 8 at 73.

This year all my sewing machines took a crap on me. Too of which were only about a year old. 🙄 then my trusty overlook machine that's it have had for 5 years now, decided now was as good as time as any to decide to stop chaining. Which consequently means No home made Jammies for Christmas eve present. Which was met with wild teenage hormones from the teenagers in the house that they were getting jammies last minute from amazon and knot blankets. Little kids didn't care but I never expected teenagers to flip out over not getting their mom made jammies. I got 3 knot blankets done for the youngens and the teenagers are still sitting on the Joanns bag waiting for me to get my act together and sit down and measure out 4 inches every 2 inches. Then comes the fun process of cutting and finally knotting. My fingers haven't quite forgiven me yet. Maybe tomorrow, since my duaghter had it in her mind that she wants to start work on a medieval dress for her next project. We will see how this goes when it comes to one zillion button holes by hand. Even if she decided she wants buttons that's still on my half a zillion button holes by hand.
