It's really sad how social media affects young artists. The desire for likes and followers stands in their way of improvement, as they are afraid of making mistakes.

    • @AndrewMaksym
      @AndrewMaksym 4 ปีที่แล้ว +73

Yeah, they're way to afraid of making mistakes and learning from that. I think public schools are also partially but not completely responsible for that. Cause if you ask a question that seems to obvious or "dumb" then everyone laughs at you and then you don't want to ask anymore questions. And therefor you don't learn much anymore. Similar to what goes on in the Art world.

It affects everyone, not just young people. Social media forces everyone down a funnel instead of being able to do whatever they want. You just become some 1 dimensional character only known for one thing and if you dare do anything else you'll pay for it. You'll be stuck being that thing for the rest of your life if you become popular at it. Even if it means being poor because a "like" on social media is not actually supporting you in any way.

i call that selective selection. if they care more about affection and popularity instead of skill developing and to express oneself truthfully they probably wouldn't fit well in the industry anyway. discipline is the only way to mastery and its a long and hard way.

honestly what helped me is making learning PART of what you love. I also have ADHD so learning something i dont want to is ACTUALLY torturous... So i love my own characters and worlds, so what i do is adapt what i need to learn into the world. "ugh i hate vehicles and dont wanna draw them" can turn into something fun like "okay but what kind of car would my character drive, let's draw that!". there's always a way around the boring stuff and making it fun!

Seeing Trent casually turning a cutesy van into a military vehicle is pretty amazing. Social media has warped my view in art in a weird way. Suddenly I have access to amazing work by these great artist and inspiration to grow and create something like that. Which is great as I have access to resources to a lot of lessons about fundamentals and how to draw and everything. But it's a double edged sword because I realized that now whenever I wanted to draw something I was constantly thinking if it was good enough for the instagram account or whatever and it made me kind of stop drawing for me because I was paralyzed about this. Gonna remember this video for when I get impatient with the fundamental stuff and try to skip directly to drawing and end up producing garbage though.

So funny that this comes out now. I talked about this just two days ago. How instagram and bad art communities online stop you from growing.
I quit all of them now, even though I have been drawing every day for two years now. It hadn't really affect me but I just couldn't get along with the mindset of most people there anymore. A mindset that keeps repeating ignorant stuff like using reference is bad and that everyone can be a good critique. A mindset where an artist is seen as the better one because of their follower count Instagram vs. Someone who has less followers but actual skills.
People who keep telling others that they don't have to put in the work everyday to earn their skillset etc etc.
It is the very same people who, if you compare their artworks from one year ago to now, just don't grow at all. And they just don't see it. Why? Because as you said: the praise keeps coming in and no one tells them that their damn 3/4 face still looks out of perspective. It's nuts. But better for those of us who work daily. Let's keep going guys!

Always felt weird about enjoying studying more than doing the fancy detailed pieces or even the finished looking pretty anime portraits I always see on social media. It's a little debilitating, not daring to try doing a big finished piece because you know that you will fail, but I much prefer that over only doing those kinds of pieces and slowing down my improvement to a crawling pace.
I like studying, and i like always knowing what to do next. I don't even dream of mastery, I just love opening my sketchbook and thinking "what should I do today? Study more arm anatomy? Or maybe a few clothing folds studies?" I'm barely done with one topic and already discovered three more things i can study and learn and practise. I love it.

That's great! Recently I've not been feeling like doing many, large, finished pieces either because I know if I try to do it then I will inevitably get loads of things wrong because I don't have the necessary skills yet. I realised as well that it probably wouldn't be worth it to put a lot of energy into those big, showcase pieces if they were going to be ridden with errors in the fundamentals.
On a related note, I've been made more aware by other videos that it's probably better for me not to try and draw a specific thing that I'm not confident at drawing without learning the correct way to draw it, because it will re-enforce the habit of drawing it wrong. On that basis, up until a little while ago I was practising perspective in the day and doing some drawn studies at night.
I'm really glad that studying has been so enjoyable for you, that's awesome. I like your mindset, it's inspiring. I should get back into studying and practising my perspective...as well as going back to trying to work through the mental blocks that are stopping me from consistently practising my craft...Thanks for sharing your perspective with your comment. :)

Thanks for the tough love, Trent. I'm not all into the social media rat race like many other young artists my age, but I have a deep-rooted aversion to failure in my art *because* of the praise I receive, like you said. Thankfully, I'm coming back around, and putting my nose to the grindstone because I know I need to slam-dunk these skills in order to succeed! And not even that, but to be someone who can take myself seriously as an artist, and not have to live by tracing or relying on only reference pictures as a crutch. It really is tragic how these kids are starting at like 11 or 12 thinking they need to be Twitter or Instagram famous, and start seeking after commissions and stuff when they can't even master something as basic as boxes in perspective. I know because I used to be one of those a few years ago.

I am 17 years old and I’ve had an art account on Instagram for a while and I get so frustrated and upset when I feel that certain post didn’t get that much likes and comments . And I find myself using those little comments and amount of popularity to validate those pieces that I worked hard on . And you are absolutely right . I haven’t been progressing because I wanted to please people and not have fun with it like I used to . And that it’s very important to draw for yourself ( unless you have a client of course lol). I’m going to start by practicing the little things cause i really love to create and draw and I really want to improve .

They're just busy going at it with their art and their living, appreciating the praise, but not getting over immersed in it to answer every random internet stranger's questions lol.
To point it out though, I think the daily grind and weekly/monthly deadlines for comic book artists also contribute to them not being able to branch out and improve their art... though I guess that's only partial, as there's also the trap of the 'comfort zone', coupled with praise, and a dash of pressure to keep doing the same thing to make deadlines work.
Anyways, keep them videos up mate, love you channel! :)

Hi there I've done your tutorial on the basics.
About 2 years ago I have started drawing digitally and have been obessed with it ever since. I was convinced that digital art was the superior way for me to create and wanted to do what all the big artists were doing and got so frustrated when I didn't succeed. I looked at their artwork and thought "yeah, I understand what they're doing, I can do that" but then failed miserably when I tried. The thing is I didn't understand what these artists were doing at all.
While doing your tutorials, I realized how fun it used to be to draw with pencil and paper back when I was in high school. I noticed that I had no idea about how other artists actually put shadows on 3 dimensional shapes. Back then I thought I understood what they were doing but I didn't. I'm pretty sure I still don't understand a lot of it. I didn't understand that when they put shadows on a face, they don't just put them somewhere where they learned the shadows should be, but imagine it as a 3 dimensional shape and logically apply light and shadow.
I've been drawing basically since I was 7, and I thought that because I used to be better at it than the other kids in school, I didn't need to go back to the basics, I was already better at it than all my classmates anyway. It really is a matter of pride, but as soon as you get out there in the real world, you realize that there's so much more to it than the things you thought you knew.
I'm really glad I swallowed my pride and went back to doing the fundamentals. I now have fun doing perspective and technical designs again, something I used to hate because I didn't understand why I sucked at it. Thank you so much for your amazing content, your videos keep me hyped to create! Cheers!

As a Artist myself, slowly practicing will get better at art. I used to never took serious in art like 4 years ago, i just draw and draw. When showed my artwork to my teacher or other people, They like my artwork but they gave me a few critics about my art, where the part is wrong or not looking good. That where i started to practice basic shapes and mesmerizing every art from TH-cam, deviantarts or instagram artist. I practice sometimes and i couldn't believe how much progress i had throughout the whole year compare to my old artworks. I am glad that i did not waste this such hard work that i have been put up most of my life.
I used to never color my artwork. People convinced me to color my artwork but i refused because i was afraid that it might ruin the piece. Until this year, I started practicing coloring my art because i want to progress my artwork not to stuck on pencil drawing. So i seriously practicing in it, mesmerizing every TH-camrs art coloring, Insta art or Deviantart. U know what, I got better a little bit compare to my old art.
That is what i learned to become a better artist, listen to critics that where they tell you that you need to improve. That is how i get better.

I'm 18 rn, I know it's still young but came with a realization that I wasted years of my life. I started drawing when I was 10 but then 2 years later I stopped cause I'm scared of failing or doing bad art. I once again started drawing when I was 14 been drawing occasionally, just filled 1 sketchbook a year. I had a big break this year, I drew a lot and studied more. It was fun and I'm very joyful when I see gradual improvements in my art and some failures. I was really confused of what I wanted when I was younger, but rn I won't waste anymore of my time I have decided to be a concept artist as my long term goal. Thank you! I will be digging on more of your videos!!

Tks for the video man, it really helps and I hope others see it too and pick up their pens again.

It's not just praise that makes people stop growing. Some people love doing what they do even if they recognize they're not the best at it. Some people don't NEED to be the best. I think learning and growing is great and I strive to do so, but I can totally understand that people can be content with what they've got. And sometimes you gotta be content with what you got and enjoy praise/praise yourself. I don't think it's healthy to pretend praise from other people doesn't matter either, we're all social animals. Well, most of us I guess.

I am 21 and I should be graduated from college and getting my degree this year or next year, but I am still learning the fundamentals. To a lot of young artist my age might think that it is too late to learn because people normal graduate from university and college at 21 and 22 of age if you are not pursuing a higher degree. Art is something that takes a long time and dedications, but also anyone could do it if you are willing to practice. Some of my classmates are in their thirties and forties and they decided to get into art while working a full time job and raising a family. For those my age out there, if you think you are running out of time, relax, you might have to work a few part time job you don’t like. But once you reach the level where you could take on freelance job or work for a game company/studio, everything would be worth it.

That's why every second counts and also practice wasn't also enough, you must have a will and passion. I'm a beginner also I've been drawing since when i was a kid i remembered drawing pokemons, etc and making stick comics on my own. But i stop it because my classmates back then wasn't impressed with my drawings. It's because im not gifted. But still i enjoyed drawing despite all the negativity. Now, i stood up and forcing myself to continue this path even though idk where im going to end up. Currently, I'm studying anatomy in online classes in order to make my drawings proportionally correct and im surprised that i am improving alot. I've learned so many things and i'm still keep on going.

For me it's not the boring part of learning fundamentals that kills me, it's how slow it is in a world where if you don't have your life put together at 25 at the latest, you're losing. Because I know that even if I put all my effort into learning how to draw and spend most hours of the day doing art, it will still take years just to be good at it, and then I'll have to deal with the self-promoting part, which is another whole subject I don't have a clue about. Feels very slow in a very, very fast world, even if you're doing it right.

I'm 23 right now, but I'm not sure if I'm at the Toby stage since I don't particularly care about the reactions I get to my art on social media. I'm just constantly unhappy with the difference in my perception of the things I want to draw and my ability to draw them, and this is a video I come back to often. I know I have to make time to practice my fundamentals yet again, but balancing work with personal art and social events is something I never realized I had to do until now.
Funnily enough, I have paid for some tutorials and still haven't done them. One of your tutorials, 21 Draw courses, Linked In Learning (which is free through my school), and my shelf full of "how to draw" and "artist basics" books are all basically untouched. I think I just need to do a little at a time until I can truly enjoy the process because even after years of trying to be something else, I ultimately love being an artist above all else.

Great video Trent I think people need to hear this.
Yeah, this video helped a lot. In a way I've probably been a bit of a toby got potential with my art but because I've been too stubborn or reluctant to go back to fundamentals I've seen little to no growth. I have been lucky enough to meet artists who have talked me through what I need to do and how I need to improve now I just need to start putting that into practice.
I think the main reason I've not wanted to go back is cause I'm pissed that I've been and done an art degree and I've barely learnt the fundamentals while I was there so that's just frustrated me I guess. I just hope this current art kick sticks and I can actually start to find it enjoyable again. I'm currently doing 3d shapes/ understanding perspective and I don't know why but I simply can't get my head around it. Hopefully, with enough practice, I will eventually though. I also would love to invest in your tutorials Trent but I've bought so many books and tutorials that I should probably take a break from buying and actually start using them.

i am 15 and my main objective is growing better bit by bit, get good at all that i should, masterize from fundamentals to cohesion of them all together, and about social media... i made an instagram just for gymnastic classes online, and made a facebook for the first time because of a game, though i dont play games anymore, all sort of detail and process finishing work is useless, if you dont have a good base, a good working plan, maybe a good perspective, maybe a good plan of light and dark shapes plus a neat play of colours, contrast of background and the main object/ character, warm and cool at times, etc, but all of it depends on you. I wanna have a view of life of my own to my art, and work it the best i can, be the best and beyond of what i can be, and really freaking enjoy it because it feels as maybe the most real thing i could give in my love for. i love it for real and i know it'll keep up with me till the day i die, wich by then i'll be most likely satisfied, knowing i wont be able to make more even if i wanted, you know, if i got thaaat old so my hands were too shivery and i couldnt far from the best of them, but, that'll happen in a lifetime, you gotta live in the moment, oooor at least each one day make it feel worth it and satisfied with it, i might have inspired someone knowing im just 15, but inspiring myself is more than good enough, buuuut remember, all inspiration is useless if you don't do actually anything with it ;)

    But deep inside
If im being honest with myself i know where i lack
Whenever I start drawing its with the basics. Circles with shadows. Cubes in perspective. I feel once i have grasped the basic i will achieve the 1 step of my goal. I used to get discouraged by others art but now i just get inspired. If you want it. You get it the right way. Theres no shortcuts. Its like making a building stand with no support it will fall off.

Prioritizing the experience of learning / having fun during the learning process over the exposure/attention seeking is a very important message to assure your own motivation for your creative work in long term. But sometimes when there is no feedback to your very personal work at all you can't entirely ignore the touch of anxiety that something maybe off if not entirely bad about the result despite the effort and love you put into your works. Even prolific content creators have this feeling from time to time and the path how to deal with this uncertainty is not always clear. I for myself learned that there is also this omnipresent problem about algorithms on the online platforms we are used to which is an unpredictable aspect you should always keep in mind. Some of my fellow students in the past always tend to evaluate and compare well-known artists with the rest of us on the basis of their likes and followers, it was kinda worrisome how they nip the talent and motivation of their aspiring fellow artists in the bud with this comparisons.
