I don't know if this was how the guy in the arcade I was playing unlocked Reptile more than 20 years ago but the double flawless on the pit is part of it. It was a really strange moment all of us that was not playing anything were watching it like it's a big moment in history. And it's still to this day one of the biggest moments in gaming history for me.
I nearly crapped my pants the 1st time i found Reptile while playing Mortal Kombat 1 in 1993... pity i was the only person in the store & NOBODY believed me when i told them about it & i had no clue how i managed to do it, so i obviously couldn't re-create it to prove it to my mates... (This was before we had widespread internet in SouthAfrica, so i couldn't even search for it online to see if anybody else had come across this)

This happened to me at age 9. A few days earlier, I had accidentally discovered fatalities by accidentally ripping Sonya's head off with Sub Zero. I was hooked. I played every day after school. And then, out of nowhere, the green Ninja challenged me. (I believe I was Raiden). Fun times.
Ah, those memories. Long before cell phones & social media. Imagine what it must have been like seeing this mysterious character named Reptile randomly appear out of nowhere & then deciphering how to access him. What it must have been like to be out on a Friday night in 1992 at your local arcade, bowling alley, amusement park or whatever, surrounded by friends & getting to fight Reptile at the bottom of the Pit in MK1 after deciphering these mysterious clues. Truly a Generation X experience! So around here got to fulfill that? Share your stories. Perfection is the key👍
Heh I was there. SUmmer 1993, Italy, just some bar by the beach. Game was a hit but without the internet, the only way to know about reptile was magazines and stuff. I remember falling in love with the arcade, no one could get past the endurance rounds. Then one day this nerd comes in and pulverizes everyone. He was a big deal, even the bullies would respect him and leave him alone since he was so good. Skip forward a couple of weeks, I was next to him playing and I see the UFO flying by the moon and say "wow dude look!" He smirked. I remember then him trying extra hard, like bending on the arcade etc, obv he was going for the double flawless. When he got to fight Reptile I started shouting and everybody came and watched him battling this thing. I think he won very narrowly, but his legend that day became immortal among us. I'm sure if I somehow managed to ask all the kids from back then they would remember this scrawny nerd and his Iron Maiden shirt. Dunno where you are now mate, but I remember you. I hope life gave you enough happiness and love.
Man I remember there being so much mystique behind this guy. Did he come before Akuma as secret character? Looking back now, it's amazing how they used the announcer voice for emperor Shao Kahn.
What I do is this (Arcade perfect PlayStation 2 & PlayStation 3 ports)... Do 3 VS (2 player) matches in a row (the 3rd should be at The Warrior Shrine). At the end of the 3rd VS match, let the continue timer run out & then end up in 1 player mode (most likely at the 1st opponent) where the fight will be at The Pit. If I don't see any shadows, I press Start on controller 2 to go back to 2 player mode where it's rinse & repeat (the 1st 2 player match will be at The Courtyard so again only 3 matches are necessary) until you see shadows fly across the moon at The Pit. If you own the Sega Genesis and/or Sega CD versions of this game, enter the DULLARD code to activate the cheat menu & at least activate Flag #2 (flags are numbered 0-7, so it's technically the 3rd 1 down on the left hand side) so shadows will always fly across the moon at The Pit. If you own the Super Nintendo version of this game, you simply just have to be at The Pit in 1 player mode (no need to wait for shadows). But in all 3 of those home console versions, winning with a double flawless, no blocking & doing your character's fatality are still required.
As a kid with friends we actually sat down and performed this step by step only on a RUMOR that it would even work. Reptile then became my favorite character.
I had this on SNES and had no idea who reptile was. Nobody had said anything about the fighter but I had played the damn game so much and one day I just got the match. Reptile was apparently secretly programmed in over the course of a single afternoon by Ed Boon. It was a bit of a rush job being he wanted to keep it a secret even from his co-workers. From a data perspective Reptile doesn't technically even exist as a character in MK1. He's just an internal flag switch that tells the AI to swap Scorpion green and give him access to Sub-Zero's special moves when toggled on.

Spam that jump kick 😂
Im 41 and i only found out about this now gosh
The best looking reptile. They then turned him into a kinky lizard in dominatrix.
As this was the shiz back in the day, its amazing to think about every time you played it. Dudes used the same move, over and over and over again. It was so lame!
You dont need a double flawless you just need to score a certain amount of points
This is impossible to figure out by accident, the developers HAD to leak this information somehow
Gargalhada no danger muito legal
I didn't realize "jump kick" was Johnny Cage's entire moveset.
Plus few sweeps and an uppercut
No internet, word of mouth,or a random cheat book..❤
Reptile's head becomes Scorpion one's when ripped off...
Dope now I'm going to kick his ass, BRB....... He, uh. He won and he took my shoes.
Sub Zero x Scorpion (They have their son Reptile)
10,000,000 points, then you switch the Mega Drive off.
Still trying to figure out why his name is still scorpion after the announcer said he’s reptile 😂
I found Easter egg santa riding Rudolph
Feliz 30 aniversario mortal Kombat
Why does it label him as Scorpion on the health bar? It should say Reptile shouldn't it?
I know. Development oversight maybe.
@@tonitoniversus could be. this must be arcade. It's just one of those things where you can only put so much data in to a game. Like not only did they seem to not have time to input his name but they also rushed making him because he doesn't have his own moves in this one. The way it looks to me like they just took the color palettes of scorpion & sub zero & made it green & then just mixed their powers together & they were just like ok this is a new character, the end. But this is the very first release so I mean we all make mistakes. I just find the origins of reptile really intriguing
@@captainchrispy1407 It would be exciting if he had his moves in the later games, spitting acid, turning invisible and his head eating fatality think how many people would of shit themselves back in the day? ;)
You dont have to time out on the pit. Can be any stage. It's very anoying, and will not work if in vs mode at the lit w flying kites and santa. Arcade that is. Apparently its every sixth game. Still trying.
