Fun Fact about Terra - Mount Rushmore still exists, however the identities of the faces on it have long since been forgotten and they assume they were just old kings. Not to mention how it's been worn away greatly due to time and the many MANY wars
That depends on which canon you're following. There are like eight "canons". The problem with 40K lore is how it contradicts itself constantly, it's retconned and so on. So, so much of the information on the wiki is put there by people who turn assumptions into lore and "canon", with uncited information on a constant basis. Not to mention GW has reworked the lore countless times, often in direct contradiction to itself. Malal is a good example.
I imagine pilgrims getting Paris syndrome when visiting Terra and crumbling seeing it's not all golden and holy-looking. Word Bearers should go around mearly broadcasting pics of Terra. Instant traitor maker
Paris syndrome (and its cousin Jerusalem syndrome) are just so wild. If someone made it up in fiction we probably wouldn't believe it because it is too unrealistic, but truth is stranger than fiction.
Doesn’t really matter. Ask a Muslim if trash in Makkah would make him consider the city less holy. It’s the sacredness of it, not the beauty. Hindus still worship Ganges despite that river is pollutted as shit😊
Even in its squalor.. Its still pretty damn impressive An entire planet, that is One HUGE city. Even Hive worlds don't come to that level, and have huge area's between different hives. But Terra is ONE hive city, covering the entire place. Its a polluted, horrifying place to live. But just the sheer scale would be awe inspiring. Looking down on a planet, and seeing every square inch covered by a city. You cannot see any part of the surface, only city. The Palace is likely visible from space as a golden block in Asia. And, given the propaganda in 40k. It wouldn't be seen as 'everything that made it a planet, all the wildlife, all the nautre is gone' It would be 'mankind has come so far, that we have eclipsed even nature itself. Not element of nature can overcome humanity. Not even Rain can overcome the indomitability of humanity'
As someone who lives in Dallas, I wanted to comment that Dallas-Fort Worth(and the surrounding smaller cities) have not merged into one giant city yet. That is until I looked on Google maps and realized that there is almost quite literally no area that has not been developed. Save for the small creeks and wooded areas that are sprinkled in.

On a smaller scale I live in a city in the UK called Bristol. There are people who remember when Bristol and the town of Kingswood were completely separate, linked onto by a single road. Bristol has completely devoured Kingswood to the point its hard for even locals to tell where the divide is. And this has happened with a dozen towns and villages in the local area alone, being overtaken by the ever expanding city until they can no longer deny they aren't now just a small part of it. This is common and also quite scary.
Euless, specifically by the bell helicopter building there is still a ton of undeveloped land, was weird first time going through, in the heart of the metroplex and there’s just fields everywhere
There was an old story in WH40k where even members of the Administratum weren't allowed to look up the statues. So I'm guessing that's probably the same for the lower classes as well. They probably didn't notice the vandalism to the statue because most probably never looked at it in their entire life because they were too afraid.
I am from bangladesh, and 40k is so relatable for me coz my home "hivecity", dhaka, is just like the description in this video. I know it might seem farfetched, but westerners truly cannot imagine the hell-hole from where I come.
Read the Infinite and the Devine recently. Essentially an ork fleet is draining the ocean of a planet and is engaged by two necron ships. So this fleet is so large is can drain oceans but small enough two Necron ships have a fighting chance against it. Blacklibrary and GW often have absolutely no sense of scale or numbers and I sometimes find it cripplingly bad for suspension of disbelief.
@@IvanIssaccs I think it's more so a measure on how powerful those Necron ships are. Plus, these are Orks, Necrons have faced Krorks, I doubt they were intimidated by their devolved ancient foes.
I like to imagine somewhere in the warp is just a massive dome of water that’s all of Terra’s oceans. Tzeentch probably floats in it as he stole it from Earth a couple thousands years before Emps made his move just to fuck with the Emperor lol
According to The End and The Death in the wake of the Siege Terra is one of the most Chaos tainted planets in the known galaxy and it can't be completely purified, so the Golden Throne is the only thing preventing it from becoming a Deamon World.
Because that is where the emperor is at who is protecting holy terra from being turned into a chaos deamon world from his holy divine light and power. That goes with every xeno (alien race) for the emperor to intervene against the gene stealers cult to whereby on terra during the time that they were killed off. Big E is protecting Terra from any threat that comes to claim the holy birth place of humanity.
I mean you know.. Siege of Terra is peak of Culmination galaxy wide apocalypse of Civil War and Daemonic Warp abomination that so big, It destroy whole star system combined Traitor exterminatus, blown up and taken slave ultra torture what chaos shit happening. All for one purpose, Destroy Terra and Kill Emperor
Its also Terra literally just one way from becaming Warp Storm.. You know about Webway Project?? Look at War within Webway, Emperor of Mankind create a literal Sun and manage to sealed the gate portal.. If the gate portal didnt seal, Whole Terra is warp storm
From what I understand the golden throne is the only thing holding Terra together. Big E is locked in a constant state of holding off the warp, once he’s gone it’ll erupt into a warp storm and engulf the planet if not the entire system.
Agri engineer here, wouild likke to say a fun fact on carrying capacity. The hard "population limit" is food production, however we already overproduce it. Additionally, we can raise that limit by A LOT if we were to mass deploy hydroponics and aquaponics. Though, nowhere near 40k, and we should not try to. Our current problems are more a product of our reliance on steam age logistics and economics at best. Unfotrunately, we're going down an irrational and 40k ish route if we don't course correct. Also, not surprizing that a greek came up with the ecomonopolis. Athens, greece's capital that has become a bit of a megacity that houses close to a third of it's population (at it's height of growth it was set to become half) that grew by devouring the other towns of attica.

weird, I would have thought earth would be a holy site, where the emperor and high ranking officials lived in paradise with beautiful forests and large oceans
People severely underestimate just how large population could grow on Earth. The limiting factor is not even the available space, but the generated heat, that would need to be radiated away, as not to cook everything on the surface.
Large open top stadiums need to blast the air conditioning during big games even in the winter because having that many people in that relatively small a space generates so much heat
Here's something I find Facinating, Terra is the Capitol of the Imperium of Man and it's one of the worst places to live in the Empire. Meanwhile Maccrage is the Capitol of Ultramar and yet its one of the best places to live in the Imperium. Aint that funny?
It's because Guilliman made sure Maccrage had a foundation of sustainability both environmentally and culturally. Guilliman detested leaders and elites that only looked out for themselves and not the common people. When he took charge after the death of his adoptive father he made sweeping reforms that redistributed wealth and power away from the elite and bettered the lives of the civilians. He recognizes that it's the common man that makes a civilization run, and a happy and comfortable worker is a productive worker.
I’d like to see how Terra might’ve been like right before the Great Crusade &/or Horus Heresy, ie when things had been settled enough to start focusing on galactic-scale warfare. (Tho tbf, Ultranar was also scarred by the Heresy, and they seem to have recovered well despite that?)
You'd think with all those Custodes supposedly trained in all aspects of human knowledge, they be the ones to do something about their sire's throne planet. Surely a whole group of them would come up with a proper solution to slowly but surely improve Terra from it's current state.
I've read Science Fiction writers calculate about 40 billion is more than possible even with modern tech, without purging the Oceans and each human having a bunch of space to be comfortable. Like a massive Earth-Sized suburb-low density city.

The failure of the emperor is either profound or he's sacrificed humanity to become a powerful warp being on purpose. I can't decide which. In either case, extinction would be a cold mercy. Big E is either a fiend or a fool. If he's an amalgamation of shaman souls fearful of oblivion...then it's possible he's both. It's stated that in the story, the shamans all dreded not being able to reincarnate. They were concerned for the survival of mankind but primarily, they feard final death. Looked at through this lens his utter cock up of an empire is even more ironic. He's trapped in a kind of hell resisting the warp, unable to reincarnate or die fully. He's nothing to admire. He's a plot lobotimized mummy, a litch, unable to do anything really, not even die.
@@Archon3960 indeed, also I'm not sure he's in there at all. Given the nature of belief in 40k, all the stuff we see attributed to him could just be the equivalent of human WAAAGH engery. The real world (mystical) equivalent being that of an extremely powerful collective thought form only in 40k (like everything), it's cranked up to 11 and literal. The dude may just be a crumbling processor unit servator running a program keeping the astrnomicon running, a mystical cpu on loop.
I wouldn't be so certain, as he seemingly halfway showed up in a recent book as a cloaked man on a boat. The Lion (first legion's primarch) was basically finding himself walking through the warp itself, and witnessed a man on a boat who was surrounded by four monstrous beings. Moment he tried to wade in to rescue him, the man just got angry and blasted them all away with some sort of mystical power. Hard to imagine anyone other than the emperor himself doin that in the warp, so I imagine it's really more like his consciousness has been completely separated from his body. There's also apparently been a couple times where a sister of silence took a look at his physical form, and noticed that it appeared to be just a simple man clenching his teeth in agony, implying that he's still got some sort of consciousness at least.
The Emperor has been literally turned into a psyker servitor. He is not allowed to die, trapped in his own decaying body, in constant endless torment and yet the Imperium use him as a beacon to navigate their ships around. Whoever says that The Imperium are the "good guys" of the setting are just not paying attention. This civilization literally use their beloved "God Emperor" leader as a living flashlight battery and instead of trying to develop ways to save him from his endless torment they are content with keeping him there forever. If anything his empire flat out REFUSE to develop anything new and will just force feed him the souls of the innocent endlessly. He has been turned into a tool no better than all the endless lobotomized servitors.

I was watching this and paused it to do some calculations based on the population density of Kowloon Walled City, and then Wes went ahead and did the same thing. Thanks for the great content!
I LOVE that you gave the technical term for a planet wide city. A futurism youtuber and president of the National Space Society, Isaac Arthur has actually done a deep dive into the feasibility of the concept. It's more feasible than you might think. He calculated that the earth would cook from the waste heat of all the people and machinery before it actually ran out of space. One of the things you could do is pave over lower levels and turn them into heat sinks.
Btw kowloon walled city was the densest area of human population on earth, extrapolated to cover the entire earth would be 969 trillion people. Probably less than 100 meters tall. The hive city is MILES high and MILES deep. (Im assuming 3 miles up and down) If we assumed it was only one-fifth as dense as kowloon walled city overall to make room for manufactorums, the palace, bridges and whatever. It would be able to physcially fit 1 sextillion, 841 quintillion, 875 quadrillion, 200 trillion people. "In the quadrillions" in terms of physical space would be childs play for the imperium, getting resources in would be the challenge and its brought up

Respect for actually putting in the effort to actually break down a claim rather than pulling an _Argument from Incredulity_ fallacy and rejecting it wholesale from the onset. 👌
It's either too much or not enough effort. Because even if you could supply every person with nutrients, even if you could handle the oxygen issue, you'd fry every person once you got over 50 trillion. Just from the combined body heat.
As luck would have it I lived in Hong Kong during the time period you’re mentioning. As a 7 year old going to Kowloon… you could get anything you dreamed of within. The deeper and higher you went the more illegal items you could purchase became. Hash, guns, body armor, ammunition, etc, Don’t get me wrong as a 7 year old white mid I never went alone, I was always accompanied by my brothers that were much older than me. However, that being said, wan chai had very similar areas. Nothing like Kowloon, but.. you could get anything you wanted from fake dvd’s to straight up hand grenades. One of the theoretical limits to the population of an ecumenopolis is the heat produced by the human bodies present (and however you get them the food). But I don't think we have to pay attention to that, in the 40k universe.
Correct. Unless you find out a fancy way of getting rid of heat, the maximum number of humans the earth can support is around 10 trillion people. And it would be far from reaching the level of urbanization that Coruscant or Holy Terra have. th-cam.com/video/XAJeYe-abUA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zvmlSEuq913lPfjN
Earth has become much more of a megastructure than a planet. I think if we start telling people that it'll start to change how they understand such a huge number as possible.
I found the video very informative and also very well done, even though you unfortunately forgot a source of information about Terra: When Ragner Blackmane of the Space Wolves had been a protector for one of the Navigator Houses and ended up in the lower levels on a mission. At first he was thrilled to be on Terra, especially as a Space Marine who wasn't supposed to set foot on Terra anymore, but as time went on he realized more and more how grim the reality really is. I really liked how even Space Marines have a misconception about Terra and how little time it takes for them to realize the truth. AND, as you said, that humans from Terra are barely familiar with the history of humanity when he saw an effigy of the Primachs that looked nothing like their real selves.

The defaced statue reminds me of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where a wooden ladder has stood untouched for upwards of 300 years because nobody's sure who it belongs to and touching it would cause a power struggle
Harvesting ice from space has been put forward before in sci-fi as a means to gather water for super vast population or resupply in remote regions of space
Over here in Europe many metropolitan areas are the product of merging cities - the greatest conglomeration of people in a metropolitan area are the industrial centers aling the Rhine river including what's referred to as _"der Ruhrpott"_ in german, the center of german heavy industries since the Industrial Revolution. But even my home city of Berlin which is surprisingly isolated for a city this size and surrounded by rural areas like an island in an ocean is a merger of preestablished cities goin back to early medival slavic settlements and a roughly 800 years old german settlement in their center which grew over centuries until they merged into one, something officially declared and enacted upon only as late as 1924.
So Earth became Coruscant but grimdark. Also I’d rather live on like a questoris knight world, if I had to pick a “livable” planet to spend full life on.
Coruscant is pretty grimdark on its own, the lower levels of the planet are pretty bad. People living in squaller, rampant crime, and unable to even see the sky they're so far down. But it isn't AS bad as Terra, at least the air is breathable on the planet's surface and there is possible travel up and down the levels of the planet (besides the lowest levels) and the people don't live in constant fear. And there's enough trade going on that the population won't starve if a shipment is an hour late like Terra. If Terra is a 2/10 for habitability then Coruscant is probably a 6-7/10. A good example for this merging of cities is the wider area where I live, the “Ruhrgebiet” or “Ruhr Region” in Germany. It used to be a group of smaller and mostly insignificant cities along the Rhine and Ruhr Rivers. But it also just happens to be on top of one of the largest coal deposits in all of Europe, so it experienced an enormous growth over the last two hundred years. It’s not a dystopic hellscape like Holy Terra by any means, but if you drive from one city to the next, you can’t tell when you’re in the next city, because all the cities merged to the point that it’s multiple cities only on paper while in reality it’s one big city with a population of around 14 million people.
At least Grots have a place in their society. Even if they're not respected they are still essential. And they don't always take things lying down, when pushed too hard they will rebel. GW writers creating lore books that estimate that Terra has quadrillions in population numbers clearly have not read why in real life history population booms have happened...
On the one hand, you can't have a city the size of the world be moderately populated (let alone densely) without quadrillions. On the other, quadrillions of people on a sphere the size of Earth can't radiate their heat away fast enough to keep breathing. Upper limit would be in the trillions, even if you blotted out the Sun.

Stuck in traffic the whole day long? TIA. Waiting for 8 hours for a tugboat to appear and when it finally arrives the captain is drunk? TIA, get used to it. Pretty nice sunset and people having the party of their lives with just an oil barrel to drum on? Also TIA.
To what happened to Terra's water, I think everyone always overlooks the option that water pipe systems exist in cities. The oceans have been collected to be piped through the entirety of Terra supplying "fresh" water for drinking, waste disposal, Holy water fountains, High Lord gardens, coolant systems and the like. With a city sprawling the entirety of the planet and reaching miles into both the sky and bedrock, thats a lot of piping for water distribution. Theres also the possibility of colony ships from when humanity first started to settle the galaxy. Those ships would have carried vast amounts of water for hydrogen fuel, drinking and hydroponic gardens Just my thoughts for it.
The adeptus arbites and the inquisition may actually be killing hundreds of millions of people a year as state sanctioned genocide to quell cultist uprisings in certain levels of the mega hive, without even questioning who they are killing. Because if the quadrillion number is correct there are probably already more cultists and corrupted people on Terra in comparison to the entirety of the rest of the Imperium. Because with all of the rest of the hive worlds combined and with all other systems under imperial law, the number of people out in the galaxy is still dwarfed by the amount of people on Terra. Terra essentially holds 99 percent of the imperial population. That’s is some serious mind fuck there.

Going through I-20 it's really something to see just how similar each town is at this point.
Please check out futurism, Isaac Arthur is a great resource here on TH-cam, quadrillions of humans on earth is extremely reasonable given the technology they have in the 30,000-40,000th year.
You are making the mistake of calculating what is "sustainable" based on modern science and technology which is extremely silly.

Shows how Bobby G. is doing a better job than He did overall if you ask me. B/

I sense heresy…
The Emperor has been literally turned into a psyker servitor. He is not allowed to die, trapped in his own decaying body, in constant endless torment and yet the Imperium use him as a beacon to navigate their ships around.

Not good, not bad. But practically a Utopia by comparison to Terra.

But one thing of all of extremely importance :
Astronomicon for Beaming the Beacon for 100,000 Light Year in entire Milky-Way galaxy for provided every Imperial Warp Navigation where the Emperor of Mankind directed the Lights on the Navigational lines for the Astropath and Navigator..
And oh dont forget the Seal Webway gate that essentially if opened.. Whole Terra will be engulfed into Warp Storm aka Imperium collapsed, Thanks to 10,000 years crammed Emperor seat in throne
3:56. Nice. Living in that life right now. Feels good to be 40,000 year in the past. Before everything hit the fan.
It looks like Beijing 18 m. or Moscow 17 m.
The betterhelp plague is spreading rapidly
Somehow, living on terra as a low born human is kinda worse that being a grot anywhere else.
At least Grots have a place in their society. Even if they're not respected they are still essential. And they don't always take things lying down, when pushed too hard they will rebel. Even if it ends in failure they still try.
And they have a mythic figure to rally around. Da Red Gobbo, a Grot revolutionary.
At least a Grot can run away and hide.

GW writers creating lore books that estimate that Terra has quadrillions in population numbers clearly have not read why in real life history population booms have happened...
Yeah, GW and numbers often go a long way. 😂
@@archapmangcmg Well not only that but other countless realism/realistic facts that mass births require high level of medical services available and high health of citizens and high level of healthcare in general.
@@diamondhamster4320 You're more likely to have the consistent population growth with shitty living conditions. Wealthy, healthy people have fewer children, especially if they don't rely on their own kids paying for their old age.

Yes as someone who lives in DFW, it sometimes makes me think that you could drive basically a little less than an hour east to west or south to north and it basically be continuous city, town, and entertainment district. With fast food spots and hotels of the same franchise never more than 1 to 2 miles away.
In fact, it might happen again with the Texas Triangle. (Austin, San Antonio, Houston)
The idea of the Earths population being capped/ideal at 8 billion is actual bs. We could easily sustain populations 3-4 times that amount. The more accurate studies take in to account the erodible land realistically. There's an insane amount of empty land everywhere w/ fertile soil.
To add to that, modern agriculture is extremely inefficient because of meat production. If meat consumption were significantly reduced or eliminated, the earth could sustain a loooot more people. And before anyone asks, no I'm not a vegan and I'm not shaming meat-eaters, I'm simply stating a fact.

Rather than translating to "it is what it is", I think the inspiration for "This is Terra" was actually "This is Africa". In writing it is usually abbreviated to TIA. Rampant corruption? TIA. Stuck in traffic the whole day long? TIA. Waiting for 8 hours for a tugboat to appear and when it finally arrives the captain is drunk? TIA, get used to it. Pretty nice sunset and people having the party of their lives with just an oil barrel to drum on? Also TIA.
I was taught "This is Thailand" for almost exactly the same reasons.

Scummiest sponsors

To what happened to Terra's water, I think everyone always overlooks the option that water pipe systems exist in cities. The oceans have been collected to be piped through the entirety of Terra supplying "fresh" water for drinking, waste disposal, Holy water fountains, High Lord gardens, coolant systems and the like. With a city sprawling the entirety of the planet and reaching miles into both the sky and bedrock, thats a lot of piping for water distribution.
Theres also the possibility of colony ships from when humanity first started to settle the galaxy. Those ships would have carried vast amounts of water for hydrogen fuel, drinking and hydroponic gardens
Just my thoughts for it.
You look better, Fella.
A year or two back, you had some videos that really scared me.
Remember to stay kind to yourself. Proud of you. (Hugs)
I imagine if i even walk wrong, they'll say im corrupted and throw me into the vacuum
Can't take any chances in terra after all
The adeptus arbites and the inquisition may actually be killing hundreds of millions of people a year as state sanctioned genocide to quell cultist uprisings in certain levels of the mega hive, without even questioning who they are killing.
