    After 60 years, I’ve always remembered two things from this episode - the shadow of her hitting her husband with the frozen leg of lamb, and the shot of the empty dishes after the cops have unknowingly consumed the murder weapon.

      Hitchcock didn't believe in bad guys getting away with it, so he went on to explain that she tried doing the same thing to her second husband, not knowing that he defrosted the freezer,so she hit him with a defrosted leg. She went down for murder and attempted murder.

    All the questioning about 'doesn't your husband take ice in his drink? Does he always get a drink before dinner? Means that this now dead husband's coworkers KNEW this corpse was fooling around on his wife & ready to dump her. So the keen skill it took to take all this questioning in stride & not reveal the truth was sheer genius of this woman. She's looking out for her child & herself.

    • @nassauguy48
      @nassauguy48 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Alfred Hitchcock was a firm believer in never letting any type of crime pay. At the end of the story, he related how the woman ultimately went to prison when she tried the same tactic on her second husband. (She had simply grown tired of him). However, she forgot to turn the freezer on, and the meat was very soft. Her husband put two and two together and had her arrested. The moral was that the woman, having gotten away with one murder, became arrogant and nasty. Besides, hadn't she ever heard of alimony?

      I think it's better without. She's not a serial killer in the original story - she's reacted spontaneously in anger to her husband's behaviour, grieves terribly, but hides the crime to protect her baby, and gets away with it. It seems out of character for her to do it again. I guess maybe in the 50s, the censors felt she shouldn't get away with it, so they added a bit where she's caught.

    I loved AHP. The whole series- awesome, addictive. Some of the best writing. This was easily one of my top 5 favorite episodes, so clever. What's funny is I think this episode was adapted from a story by Roald Dahl, who became more well-known for his books geared towards kids, haha! But when you combine this story and AH's direction, and we can't forget Barbara Bel Geddes' masterful performance, you end up with an amazing bit of TV!

    RD in a public narration introducing this story. Expressed, that he and Ian Flemming (James Bond creator),were at a socialites dinner party one evening. IF turned to RH during the meal and said " that lamb is so tough it could kill someone". Hence the writing of the play.

    Mrs Maloney resembles Pat Hitchcock. First thing I thought when I saw the cooked chicken (later see it's leg of lamb) was, "There's the murder weapon." By the end I'll know. And YES, the smile reveals it when he says, "It might be right under our noses."

    • @hebneh
      @hebneh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s not chicken; it’s a leg of lamb. And it was frozen solid when she hit her late husband with it and killed him.

    I wish the entire episode was shown! I remember seeing this as a kid and I have never forgotten it, LOL. Her detective husband was cheating on her and was going to leave her and her baby. The leg of lamb the policeman ate was the murder weapon. They never suspected women back then, especially a visibly pregnant woman.
