I’m so glad there’s a community of people that agree this is the greatest scene in survivor, ever. It had me in tears. What they don’t show in this clip is when he gets to the challenge and talks about how he didn’t need any food or water, then right before it begins asks one of the other guys “hey man can I get some water?” 😂😂😂
It’s really great. I got back into survivor after a long lay off and obviously heard of this ‘coach’ guy-and my goodness did he live up to the hype lol LEGEND. Doesn’t need to win to be immortal and he almost did anyway in South Pacific.
I cut this scene with the help of my insanely talented producer who got all this content in the field. We had so much fun putting this together. our original cut was almost twice as long but hey... it's prime time tv.. we had to chop a ton out. what a joy to stumble upon this many years later... my biggest regret is that there are already footprints from the first time he walked places but the shots we chose were just better composition.. these days I would err on the side of the the "rea'l" take but back then "most" people didn't notice stuff like that.
This was done really well from top to bottom. You should be really proud of this work. Just look and read through other comments on here! This was practically art.
The best part by far is when show the shot of Coach Wade on the Sand Dune and he says, "Coach Wade's body might be failing in him in many ways, but Coach Wade still has what it takes, to outlast anybody here in this environment. Period, paragraph!"
This episode was the peak of reality television. Nothing can ever match the editing and comedic genius that The Martyr Approach had. To say this episode was making fun of Benjamin Wade, the most ridiculously over the top character in Survivor history, is an understatement. It really focuses in on how delusional this man really is, while also showing the others in a great way. The editors just dunked on this guy as much as they could.
I honestly don't think the guy is delusional. I just don't think he takes himself very seriously, which, on reality TV, is a good thing, because you're a more convincing actor. Russell Hants has even said that Coach was the guy who made Russell want to go on Survivor: if Coach could be THAT good an actor, and fool everyone into thinking he was a narcissist, what could Russell do?
i often come back to this when i feel lost in life and need guidance. the man, the myth, the king, the legend, the warrior, THE DRAGON SLAYER….THE COACH WADE
You can tell he had a say in his own edit, and he really is that amazing an actor. In real life, no one would refer to themselves that often in the first person, and no one would use that many adjectives to describe their own greatness. He fooled all of America into thinking he was a pathological narcissist, and that, my friends, is one hell of an act.
Sean Foley He’s bad in the movie but I think at least 40% of his time on survivor is acting because if you watch interviews and stuff with him he seems very similar to the person he is on the screen
The thing about Coach is that while I do think it was mostly an act, I think he was trying to be the hero of the story, when he turned out to be a villain and a hilarious hypocrite.
@@leae3750, LOL, we may never know! Russell Hantz's schtick was an act. You should see what he's like with his TH-cam content nowadays. He's a nicer (not "NICE", but nicer) dude who pretended to be a total ass. Some people are just better at playing to the camera than others. The only reason why I say Russ isn't, like, all-the-way nice is because he CAN be a bit rough around the edges. I wouldn't recommend his content to kids.
Coach, Phillip, Debbie, Shane, Angelina, Abi, Brandon Hantz, Matthew (the one who needed his machete so sharp), Naonka, all on his me tribe with Courtney to narrate the whole think. I would pay my winnings if I ever go on the show to see that tribe.
When my boss sees me slacking and asks what’s up… my response: Coach Wade’s body might be failing him in many ways, but Coach Wade still has what it takes to outlast anybody out here in this environment. Period. Paragraph.
Let's never forget what actually became of this: Coach had never been to Exile Island before, but he took one for the team. He went in like Moses, did this shit, came back, earned immunity, gave up immunity, then got immediately eliminated. So good. Edit: Apparently I wasn't exactly correct. The point still stands that he gets eliminated almost immediately after this. It was as if he ascended from the game and became one with the Survivor Gods.
It's still hilarious that he did all of this shit and became a legend only to be IMMEDIATELY fucked over and eliminated, and this was after being fucked over for basically the whole competition.
Coach might have been best as a one season character. He was so great. Though, when Tyson was real with him during Heroes v Villains, that was pretty good too.
I know he has many haters but I've always admired him. He wanted to build alliances with the best people who he could trust, like JT. And when the Dragon-Slayer was on the jury, he voted for JT to win the show, as he should have, but I believe his vote said- "The Warrior JT". He wanted to play with the best and when it came down to it, he gave the title of Sole Survivor to the best.
as much of a joke that he is and he is hilarious, he does speak truth... The whole tai chi part of him and he is clearly on a fast here, which is a staple of many of the greatest minds that have lived. Just look at the greeks, and particularly, Pythagoras and how much fasting you had to do to get into his school
the airplane in the dissolve at 2:43.. it's not part of either shot.. like wtf? I do not remember that.. had to have been a remnant of some other timelapse that was composited in the transition at some point but I cannot believe that wasn't plucked out at the online session!
The scene I posted is actually two scenes from the same episode. The plane is from a scene in between the two coach exile scenes. The plane is just there from when I cut that out.
@@ThePatchster Hundreds of hours of film edited down to a nugget. A lot of his speech sounds scripted and practiced. Probably filmed these snippets in more than one take. In Survivor, he is playing the archetype warrior. His stories are great but I doubt if they are true. I am not a big fan of Sophie Clarke, I think the jury was rigged & Coach should have won South Pacific, but again, we only see snippets. We do not know what goes on behind the scenes.
