- This is my complete maintenance routine that I’ll usually do annually. Obviously I’m not doing this routine every time, but this is a good standard baseline for a complete overhaul.
Materials Used:
Stiff Bristle Brush
Narrow Bristle Brush
Saddle Soap (Kiwi)
kiwi horsehair brush
120 Grit Sandpaper
Fiebings Walnut Leather Stain
Fiebings Dark Brown Edge Dressing
100% Beeswax
Hubberds Shoe Grease
Towel
Boots:
Franks Type 1 Commanders, uppers are chocolate, lowers are Mocha. Eyelets are Antique.
Awesome video, brother! Would love to see you review both pairs as well. Most people who do reviews don't actually work the boots, but you seem to be putting them through their paces.
For sure! I’ll probably do a history of logging boots video with a review of these thrown in there, or a series on footwear.
Yeah, I always hate when people review boots but the boots clearly haven’t been worn very much, or are just one pair mixed in with a dozen other pairs they occasionally wear.
Just like we used to do to our combat boots before we switched to wash and wear. Miss the discipline of spits and startches. Good info
Well done 🇺🇲👢🪥🧽🧹
Nice man. I need to do a cleaning video on my boots too! The procrastination is real.
Be careful about putting oil or grease around the eyelets. I’ve seen eyelets start to pull out due to the leather being weakened from oil.
For sure, that’s always a concern of mine. I’ll give them a good wipe down afterwards and definitely make sure there isn’t any buildup by the hooks. I forget though and get carried away sometimes, thanks for the reminder!
Nice video man . Crazy thing I've only ever broke leather laces never broke a regular ones Only thing I've been told from the back of my Fabians saddle soap can lol to not to use saddle soap on rough out bc it kills the nap lol to use rough out suede cleaner on the bottoms and only saddle the tops you'll notice a difference.
Huberd's 👍.... Frank's Boots 👍👍
Great!
Well done! Do those type 1 commanders have a regular soft toe or a celastic toe? Keep up the good work
These are a regular soft toe on a #4 last! They haven’t gotten as squished in the toe like I see on a lot of other PNW boots after they’ve been worn for a while, they remain roomy
Were you in the Army perchance? 101st? You remind me of a buddy of mine that I haven't talked to in a while.
I was! 3BCT 101st 17 to 23!
Pretty much turned them black, tho. I thought the point o' roughout is ye neigh need do all them extra thing except maybe waterproof spray or some such...
Also, I think replace the kilts more often and I prefer the taller ones overall in theory after initial break-in.
Rough out is fantastic for durability and preventing scuffs and abrasion from damaging the boot, it just handles wear and tear so much better than smooth faced leather. In the case of hard use boots like logging boots, it absorbs a ton of dubbin and other shoe greases and makes it semi-waterproof. If you just treat smooth with it, it won’t last as long. Theres a reason American combat boots from WWI to WWII were rough-out leather, then treated with a thick application of shoe grease.
As for the color, the color lightens up after a bit of use, but I’m more concerned with function over color at the end of the day.
Personally the fact that they darken up also has the added benefit of physically showing when they’re drying out, and that you need to apply more grease.
I have one pair with roughout lowers, but entirely possible I will get them rebuilt with some other leather next year for sizing issue, anyway. So meantime I'm not so worried about cleaning and conditioning, but we'll see.
@@Highland_Paddy Let me know! Also, side note, love your username. That’s a great song by the Wolfe Tones.
It's in one my playslist already...
