  • Aria No. 1 from cantata "Widerstehe doch der Sünde"; BWV 54
Aria Nr. 1 aus der Kantate "Widerstehe doch der Sünde"; BWV 54
Adapted, arranged and conducted by Jörg Achim Keller
hr-Bigband / Frankfurt Radio Big Band
sololists: Peter Reiter, rhodes; Martin Scales, git
Live-Recording at Alte Oper Frankfurt, 14. November 2018
Bach goes Big Band shows how a contemporary big band can approach the work of the great Johann Sebastian Bach. In the interplay of Baroque rigor and jazzy looseness, of detailed composition and the freedom of improvisation, Jörg Achim Keller and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band prove the timelessness of Bach's oeuvre even for today's orchestral jazz.
    deutsch:

Excellent ! Bach composed this one with an extra strong groove, lending itself to jazz. Then the talented Martin Scales adds his swing to it.

This opening dissonant chord is fairly classical, a dominant chord over a tonic bass. Yes, it could be the tension between temptation and virtue.

Sensational! BRAVO! May I crosspost? I do not monetise my Channel, and will give full credit to your Channel, including links to it. It's fine if not. I greatly enjoyed this wonderful, wonderful performance and interpretation by highly talented musicians. Bach would have approved, I'm certain of it!

1:37 The otherwise excellent guitarist omitted the additional F note at an octave lower at the end of that sequence. It is a striking effect in the original score, but still, I guess that's nit-picking.

I don't think it's nit-picking. I noticed it, too, and it does create a beautiful effect in the original aria.

Comment peut-on oser ridiculiser une telle musique sacrée ?!

    • @mizuqatsi

  • @janetsmith2600

No. I mean no disrespect however, there is a time and a place and this is neither the time or the place. The most beautiful cantata ever written, cheapened to this. There are something’s best left alone.

I disagree. It's a valid, if unauthentic, interpretation of a great Bach work. Walter Carlos' "realisations" brought me to Bach back in the 1970's, and I'm grateful for that. Same goes for Jacques Loussier and the Swingle Singers.
