- This is my latest video, Involving the traditional art of sign painting (Signwriting), in this video I paint a sign I designed, based loosely on a vintage Cadbury's Chocolate sign from the 50's.
Sign painting is an craft that has been practiced for hundreds of years, and maybe longer.
Sadly few artists still complete works like this by hand.

Hand lettering is definitely a lost art. My dad used to do this back in the early 80s but he got out of it when he heard about vinyl decals becoming a thing. He taught me about font design and letter structure and as a teenager I got into graffiti and started painting pieces on the trains in the old school block fonts he designed. I would add cool 3d effects and cartoon characters from the 80s/90s and other writers thought it was cool because it had that early 80s flare and was easily readable so it stood out from all the other wild-style stuff.

I wanted to do this as a job before transfer lettering killed off the trade. But I did do a van and a church sign before I went into something else.

I was trained in this. It was sad when vinyl stickers came out. My trade paid nothing then, had to walk away.
That's a shame John, it can be more of a vocation at times. But I'm glad something I live can still support me.

Awesome work! I miss doing this myself;; but I was left handed; until I had a stroke;now hemiplegic from it;left side does not function anymore! However, excellent work!

I had an essential tremor from when I was a kid and still did sign writing.... The long hair of the quill is so quieting.
That sucks. But atleast u had skill at some point and can still enjoy other ppl Mastering their work.
A question if I may, do you always use oil based paint ? I paint furniture decoratively and use water based paints which has it's advantages but the brush does drag. I was interested in also doing some signs as I did one for a friends guest house a few years ago and it was a great success with guests. I do this for my own pleasure, not as a business as I am retired. Thank you
Hiya, I use oil paints for lettering onto flat surfaces. But on brick acrylic certainly has it's advantages.
If I'm painting backgrounds for signs I will use acrylic paints too as the oils take longer to dry and are more awkward to paint with.
Hi, thanks for the information, the paints did seem very fluid. With acrylic if the paint is too fluid then it doesn't cover enough. As I use acrylics I generally have to do thwo to three passes. Have a nice day, hugs from France x@@theletterhead

Could you rewind back to when you constructed each elaborate letter --long before you started painting the C of Cadbury ?----ie the pencil outline ? spacing --its confusing how you suddenly start painting without showing the early stages !

Does the brush ever get away from you after a line or curve when you’re lifting it and you accidentally spritz paint all over?
It used too, it does take a while to control the brush. Not that I'm anywhere near perfect though!
Now try doing this on a wall with spray paint 😂 while trying not to get caught by the cops… seriously tho nice technique that makes everything go faster once u learn it.
I could paint it on my way, although I'm pretty sure the cops will grab me before I can finish!
@@theletterhead pretty sure you could crush some cans if you had the right tips based on the knowledge you already have about layering

Hi Mike, the brushes I'm using are synthetic chisel style sign painting brushes. These are from Handovers UK. But there are many others. The paints I'm using are called 1shot sign painters enamels. Hope this helps!

And your mahl stick for leverage

None of the above materials are cheap

My father is a sign painter. I always enjoyed it. He has retired and I never pursued it due to uncontrollable hand tremors.

The brush I'm using here is a chiseled no.4 sign painting brush, I bought it from a UK based company called Handovers. Although there may be a closer manufacturer of similar style.

This brush is a chiseled synthetic sign painting brush, It may be better known as a quill.

Hi Bradley, glad to have you back on the brush side. Thats called a mahl stick. Personally I rely on it rather than a hand

What’s brand or type of tape are you using?
Hi there, not sure what brand but it is a low tack tape sold from our sign paints retailer.
I spent nearly 30 yrs making a living doing signwork by hand...computer technology has made signmakers out of idiots...the art is practically gone...i am a left handed painter...

When I see people painting with vinyl stencils and rollers, whilst calling it "hand painted" I do hurt inside.
@@theletterhead stencils expedite for completing time jobs...i had to use it more than once...i made my patterns.. Did it all...some 40 yrs latter I still see my work on structures. Keep painting and learning

im a digital artist. i mostly do digital illustrations. and my cousin wanted me to make something like this on a wall of a hotel. i have done calligraphy on a few certificates.
me looking at this, this looks hella scary to make those clean curves and make letters that is bigger than my hand. i feel bad for the hotel to make me paint something like this when I haven't made anything like this at all. I'd be willing to try if was just her personal small project to try 😂

Calligraphy is a skill on it's own, one that I definitely do not possess! Why not try it out and see how you go with painted lettering? With a bit of practice you may surprise yourself.

This sign is a replica of an old sign i found, I designed the layout using a design software based on that sign.
This is an early video when I was testing the waters with videoing work. I had no idea what to show or not to show.

How did you learn?
Through a family business from my father
The biggest skill in signwriting is being able to pull sharp corners without using tape. Otherwise, you’re pretty much just colouring in.
Hey "Freshpootube", thank you for your scathing, yet well written message.
I started signwriting in the UK and back then I didn't use tape for much more than lines.
But after years working and learning in London, a lot of time with short deadlines and fussier customers.
As skilled as some of the older guys are, (and I've known some very skilled traditional signwriters) with some fonts your just not gonna get it as good without it (Particularly with fonts like Trajan roman etc.). I can accept that it might not have been a great habit to get into as far as the artform is concerned, but I'd be stupid not the give the customer the best outcome I can give, especially if it's just to stroke my ego.
I do have a video coming next Monday showing a script with no tape. I look forward to receiving another roasting!

I did a load of signwriting in the 1980’s including many 8 x 4 property development boards, this video brings back some good memories. The modern vinyl cut or printed on vinyl signs are soulless by comparison but I appreciate are much cheaper especially where large production runs are required.

I've noticed that some of the really big jobs can be quicker and last longer. Especially on ridged or rough surfaces. Murals and wall lettering mostly, but atleast we corner that market still!

Hey, I'm talking more in my recent video's, I'm still getting used to it so I sound a little edgy. But it will get better!
No hate but the last script has really weird kerning and there are problems with some letters like T and the 3d varies in width, you have totrust your eyes more and stop relying on tape
Hi Kaspone, thanks for your comment. the 3d effect is more of a drop shadow based on the arched lettering as a whole. the effect will look different from one side to the other, a strange way of doing it but it was based on an original design which may have been drawn. Saying that, it isn't perfect, but I hope this helps.

Perfect layout makes it easier..i had to build letters from a single line rought layout with chinagraph...my old boss wouldnt even do rough layout jzst top and bottom guidline
