Looking at all the panels with groups of mutants fighting each other makes me wish an X-Men only fighting game were made kinda like Injustice. That would be awesome.
The comic book episodes are my favorite, an this one is now my favorite. I took a little pause from reading these new x-men titles for no specific reason, and this episode awoke the urge to catch up. The content is good and the way you guys present it to the audience is good, keep it up, I really like this channel! Congrats.
Cool vid, good energy. Please do more vids with different guests as it's fun to see more people talk about comics! However, I do think that any review of Battle of the Atom is a little incomplete without acknowledging the following: 1) Unless you're Shane Carruth, time travel almost never holds up to scrutiny and the time travel of BotA was even more non-sensical than usual. The near-death/Marty McFly moment in BotA #1 brought into focus irreconcilable paradoxes, which is a confusing way to start an event. 2) I'd argue that the BotA "event" was a non-event. The OXM were in the present at the beginning of the event and they're in the present at the end of the event. A bunch of characters from the future were introduced during the event, but seemingly none of them stuck around after the event. The only lasting mark of the event were certain characters switching teams, but 10 issues (and $40) seems like a long way to go for that. 3) The decision to have a heavily serialized 10 part story span across four monthly titles seems like a heavy handed way to force readers to purchase more books or risk being confused/frustrated for two months. Wouldn't a more elegant (and standard?) solution be to have one mainline event series (e.g. Infinity) and have the monthly titles tie-in to the event? 4) I haven't seen a single reviewer bring up the fact that Bendis/Cho were solicited as the creative team for BotA #2, but Cho didn't draw a single page of the issue and Bendis only writes one scene (I believe Aaron wrote most of the issue). Bendis & Cho are headline names and draw readers to pick up books (I personally will buy anything Cho draws). They are listed ON THE COVER of BotA #2 but they were barely involved. It could be argued that #1 and #2 above are based on taste, so they could go either way. But #3 and #4 were not fan-friendly decisions on the part of Marvel-Disney and soured me on an event that I was actually looking forward to.

This one I didn't mind because I was already reading all of the other titles anyway. 4)They shouldn't have solicited that, but oh well, who knows what was going on behind the scenes?

Seemed more like I could choose to buy Avengers/New Avengers (which I did) instead of feeling forced to buy them. 4) I wish they had caught that before it went to the printers. I love the old school Doom Patrol cover on the comic wall! I love it! I also loved the review. It actually makes me want to pick up an X-Men comic. Something I never really wanted to do before.
Wow... I'm at a loss for words. Can't believe that ANYONE actually says anything positive about X-Men: BotA! When I read it I was so damn angry that I had wasted so much money for NOTHING! And reading this only a year after AvX (which was another terrible story) it pissed me off so much that I slowly started to give up X-Men comics. (Nowadays I no longer read them at all). Last issue of BotA was my last issue of Bendis X-Men and after that I only read couple really short runs and that was it. As for this event itself... Well, for one the whole time travel angle with characters coming from the future to change the course of time is so played out in X-Men comics! We've seen that a gazillion times already, first with Rachel Grey, then with Cable and then again with Bishop and those are only the ones off the top of my head! And then we get to the second problem which is the writing. A good writer who can write good stories can manage to make even a played out story idea feel engaging and interesting but unfortunately the writers behind this even didn't do very good job here. And that's sad since if I remember them correctly they are all good writers who have done a ton of good stories. But they just dropped the ball with this one. The whole event seemed to consist of nothing but running from one place to another and nothing was really accomplished. Only new thing that came out of this was that the original X-Men couldn't go back. But there was no reason given to it then and no one even cares about explaining that now that Bendis is off the x-books. And it's sad when the only thing a big crossover like this accomplishes is revealing that the characters can't do something because... reasons. And then nobody speaks about it again for at least 3+ years now (and counting)! I don't know.. Maybe it's the case of too many cooks in the kitchen (as it tends to be with big events and crossovers) but this event was terrible! If I could have gotten a refund I certainly would have! And don't even get me started on the revelations that came after BotA! I mean, Charles Xavier II is the son of Professor X and Mystique?! WTF?! When did those two get married and have a change to bone?! I mean, it doesn't fit in at all with the past stories. And even if there was a time when those two could have gotten married I still wonder why the hell they would do that. I mean, Xavier is supposed to be the most powerful psychic on Earth! If anybody should know how terrible and untrustworthy Mystique is it should be him! Nothing about the last few years of X-Men comics makes any sense. They have become such a complete mess that it's indescribable. But on the positive side I managed to jump off the Marvel and X-Men bandwagon before Decimation redux hit the x-books. Whoops, this post ended up waaaay longer than I meant for it to be! Maybe I'll end my rant/comment here! :D

I really love it when you guys just sit around and talk about what you really love, like this video. I haven't read this story yet but your enthusiasm has me sold on it!
I enjoyed some parts like Colossus and Magik and Shogo and stuff, but overall there was no real consequence of this event and the ending was disappointing and there was no real accomplishment, being honest they could have done it in 5 issues, it was drawn out way too long. Personally I've been enjoying Ultimate Comics X-Men the most, Beak made his debut!
With the current X-Men Jean Grey school being in Limbo, Ice-Man learning about his new wizard-esque potential, Jean Grey starting to become darker and darker.....the Battle of the Atom future is looking more and more likely.
I am SO ready for Battle of The Atom. I was lucky enough to win a facebook contest and get the first issue and now all my trade paper backs i got in the mail thrusday all have "Next Battle of the Atom" im SO pumped i specifically sold my textbooks to Amazon so i could pre order it from there and get some ore to tide me over till its released in a whole month from today. Luckily i have Avenger Arena, Hawkeye and Deadpool to keep me company till then AND ordering some Top COw comics(The Darkness and Witchblade) and due to a suggestion by you guys i also getting the first two volumes on Deathmatch too
Surely I wasn't the only one who thought Battle of the Atom was a huge disappointment? Cool premise, and it started out well, but I didn't think it went anywhere interesting. Twas scattered among way too many characters who weren't developed very well imo.
I'm brand new to comics... I've been overwhelmed with where to start since it's been ongoing for decades... But I have always loved X-Men... Where do I go to get the most content... I already ordered my Battle of the Atom book...
One thing I hate about anytime they have a future Deadpool is how he either dies or is evil. I really hated what they did with him in BotA especially how they made him sane, at least sane for DP. Why can't he just be married to Typhoid Mary and teaching his crazy grand kids to be badass mercs like him, just a silly happy future for Wade. Other than that BotA was fun definitely way better than Age of Ultron.
The second part of Battle of the Atom came out in France. That was great to see all these grown up characters. I yelled of happiness when I saw who was Sorcerer Supreme ! Is this going to happen some day in the future ?
Battle of the atom was ok to me. In the beginning nothing really happened and I'm still not sure what horrible event will happen if the X-men from the past stay in the present...
I just finished the trade of this storyline. It seemed a bit too hectic. Could have had less characters and fleshed out the time players a bit more. So many exciting newer X-men are introduced and just wait in the wings. As soon as you start to get some back story, they are literally interrupted with an explosion and 20 more X-men step through another portal and I am confused all over again.
CBG19- I listen to your podcast and understand your "what's going on" reaction with the Infinity arc. I jumped into it without reading the previous titles but soon got up to speed. U should really give Infinity a chance. Its really good. Perhaps when they release the trade paperback. I took a couple of years off from reading comics while trying to stay up-to-date with stories. The Infinity arc got me right back into it. Also thanks for your recommendation on The Wake. Its really good. Fish Monster !!!!!!
Battle of the Atom had too many characters all cramped in together so only a few get any dialogue and you get all these major players simply standing silently in the background eg. Magneto.
So here's the thing...I've been out of reading comics for a while. However I've been hanging out with some friends who read and collect for the past 6 months after watching this video and talking to my friends about weather I should pick this up I finally did. I have to say if there was any arc that was going to get me back into reading comics again this was it.
In the early 90s, I had an Xmen number1. I remember thinking, "If I can keep this for 20 yrs, it will be worth a lot of money...." .... ... It's weird that is the last memory I have of that comic....
Sorry but I honestly didn't care for this one, it started out strong and had some fun highlights but overall became a clusterf%$k near the end with a rushed conclusion that left we underwhelmed. Another big problem I had with it was like with most crossovers is there was TOO many characters, most of whom went underused and didn't do anything of relevance leaving me wondering why they were even included in the first place.
They have got to make X-Men Battle of the Atom a movie directed by Bryan Singer. If you want the First Class and the present Day X-Men cast to be together in one screen? You will get it in Battle of the Atom

ok so i haven't picked up any x-men comic since 2005 but this video makes me want to so your advise would naturally be to pick up the important things on wikipedia and then check the comics right? but i have a bigger question..since you so much love comics how come you have never talked about Don Rosa and his Scrooge McDuck sories? I know this kind of stories have not been very popular in America (unlike Europe) but i think that the life and times of Scrooge McDuck is the best comic book i have ever read . I've never read an X-Men comic, but after listening to CBG19 and Amy Dallen talk about All New X-Men/Battle of the Atom on the podcast I had to read Vol. 1-3 of All New X-Men in preparation for Battle of the Atom (which I still haven't read, waiting for the release of the TPb later this month). I am just a sucker for a timey wimey plot line.
How does Wolverine`s bastard child gets presumably adamantium claws? How does he pass them down? Logan`s mutant power is only healing ability, unless they somehow manage to infuse adamantium into his testicle and sperms. Or is the son another weapons project?
Confirmed for not knowing Wolverine's powers. He has bone claws, as did Daken and X-23, but both were given Adamantium claws (and Daken had a muramasa blade shard or some shit at one point). Raze obviously didn't have that. Those are just bone claws. Brown =/= Adamantium.
How knows. Alls I know is that I thought we just got rid of Daken (although he's like a fungus, he just keeps coming back, so he could be back for all i know) and I don't need another Dakenlike asshat running around trying to fuck Logan's shit up because of their stupid inferiority complex.
***** That bone claw thing still kind of annoys me. It was much cooler when Wolverine was a rather low powered mutant that got a HUGE boost by someone lacing his skeleton with adamantium and giving him bionic (presumably) pure adamantium claws. They used to specifically state that they were pure, and Frank Miller used to draw them like they were razors. Granted, John Byrne drew them like claws from the beginning but I still like the pure adamantium and total add-on better. Now, I will grant you that him having bone claws does make it more interesting when he has children, who then have claws, but the Guardians of the Galaxy had a future descendant of his who had organic steel claws (and bones) and that was when the claws were an add-on for Wolverine.
comicbookgirl19 I am guessing you hate Daken. I thought his inferiority complex was stupid as well but there are moments that I personally liked him particularly when Remender wrote him in Uncanny especially during his death. He`s a neglected child watching dear old dad giving the love and support that he didn`t get to strangers. To him Logan is a horrible monster and not the hero he portrays himself to be and he wants to destroy that which is what he`s doing over in Uncanny Avengers.
There's still so many questions. Who assassinated Blaire? What was the catastrophe that would happen if the original X-Men stayed in the present? If the assassination was the catastrophe then what was the point of the future brotherhood for going back? etc. I liked this story, its resolution, and the ongoing All New X-men series but there is just too much left to answer.
Wolvie lost his healing factor due to a sentient virus destroying it. I highly recommend reading Paul Cornells entire run on Wolverine. It's building up to be a classic Wolverine run.

On one hand, I REALLY HATE Scott for doing a lot of the shit that he did and fall out of his way from the character I had known him to be (the boy scout, the Capt America-esque leader from the gold ol' days). I've read it, Its good if you love x-men, but not totally accessible if you're not a regular reader of all the x-books. I actually prefer the storyline over on Uncanny Avengers. Though anything drawn by Stuart Immoenen or Oliver Copiel is great though.

I'm still surprised at just how damn good this arc was, the X-Men were in desperate need of a quality crossover. I must admit that I'm sad that Wolverine and the X-men is getting shelved. That was by far the most consistently fun and entertaining X title out there.
We'll see. After battle of the atom I sort of stepped away from superhero books, good as it was it sort of burned me out. I feel like there's too much awesome stuff for me to read in other genres for me to spend my time following 4 or 5 books revolving around the same characters. I'm sure you'll keep me up to date though so I know when to jump back on.
I loved this story arc, especially the cross-series nature of it (new instalments every week *cough* *cough* DC should have done something similar for the long-arse forever evil *cough* cough*) and it's just thrown me further into the X-men world. Previously (like 2 and a half years ago) I wasn't much into X-men, Now picking up some (not all) of their next issues is one of the comic highlights of my week. This series also got me reading Uncanny X-men. :) a fun story all-round.
You guys did a great video and it was a treat to have Amy Dallen and Cap'n Kirk back for reviews, but I'm afraid I have to disagree with you guys. The "game" only changed in one way that I can't foresee being that important anyway. The character banter was excellent, but even though they realize there's a lesson to be learned at the end, they willfully and gratuitously ignore it. I guess the X-Men are just to YOLO for me right now.
Cyclops could lead a group of acolytes across the outback in the summer, after falling to earth from space. He's kind of the earnest Shackleton of the comic boom world.
I liked this, but it was really confusing for me. I've read only a few issues from Claremont's run in silver age (I'm more of a movie watcher). I've started with All-new X-men only yesterday so I need to lear A LOT about that huge number of mutants who are unknown to me. On the top of that you have this crazy timetravel story which also confused me and ending of this battle was real WTF moment. It was good but nowhere near as awesome as All-new X-men before it.

I really loved this crossover! So many emotional moments that really got to me. Although, I thought Kitty's decision at the end was a little forced. Man, you guys really make me wish I had more friends who read comics so I could discuss and debate this stuff with them all the time! I loves it, I tells ya!
This story had no real ending and left questions to be answered. The best part of this series was the Hastings days of future past variant and the lego variants.

I enjoyed some parts like Colossus and Magik and Shogo and stuff, but overall there was no real consequence of this event and the ending was disappointing and there was no real accomplishment, being honest they could have done it in 5 issues, it was drawn out way too long. Personally I've been enjoying Ultimate Comics X-Men the most, Beak made his debut!

I am SO ready for Battle of The Atom. I was lucky enough to win a facebook contest and get the first issue and now all my trade paper backs i got in the mail thrusday all have "Next Battle of the Atom" im SO pumped i specifically sold my textbooks to Amazon so i could pre order it from there and get some ore to tide me over till its released in a whole month from today. Luckily i have Avenger Arena, Hawkeye and Deadpool to keep me company till then AND ordering some Top COw comics(The Darkness and Witchblade) and due to a suggestion by you guys i also getting the first two volumes on Deathmatch too
Surely I wasn't the only one who thought Battle of the Atom was a huge disappointment?
Cool premise, and it started out well, but I didn't think it went anywhere interesting. Twas scattered among way too many characters who weren't developed very well imo.
but now we have time to flesh those characters out.

One thing I hate about anytime they have a future Deadpool is how he either dies or is evil. I really hated what they did with him in BotA especially how they made him sane, at least sane for DP. Why can't he just be married to Typhoid Mary and teaching his crazy grand kids to be badass mercs like him, just a silly happy future for Wade. Other than that BotA was fun definitely way better than Age of Ultron.

Battle of the atom was ok to me. In the beginning nothing really happened and I'm still not sure what horrible event will happen if the X-men from the past stay in the present...

I just finished the trade of this storyline. It seemed a bit too hectic. Could have had less characters and fleshed out the time players a bit more. So many exciting newer X-men are introduced and just wait in the wings. As soon as you start to get some back story, they are literally interrupted with an explosion and 20 more X-men step through another portal and I am confused all over again.
CBG19- I listen to your podcast and understand your "what's going on" reaction with the Infinity arc. I jumped into it without reading the previous titles but soon got up to speed. U should really give Infinity a chance. Its really good. Perhaps when they release the trade paperback. I took a couple of years off from reading comics while trying to stay up-to-date with stories. The Infinity arc got me right back into it. Also thanks for your recommendation on The Wake. Its really good. Fish Monster !!!!!!
Battle of the Atom had too many characters all cramped in together so only a few get any dialogue and you get all these major players simply standing silently in the background eg. Magneto.

So here's the thing...I've been out of reading comics for a while. However I've been hanging out with some friends who read and collect for the past 6 months after watching this video and talking to my friends about weather I should pick this up I finally did. I have to say if there was any arc that was going to get me back into reading comics again this was it.
In the early 90s, I had an Xmen number1. I remember thinking, "If I can keep this for 20 yrs, it will be worth a lot of money...." .... ... It's weird that is the last memory I have of that comic....
Sorry but I honestly didn't care for this one, it started out strong and had some fun highlights but overall became a clusterf%$k near the end with a rushed conclusion that left we underwhelmed.
Another big problem I had with it was like with most crossovers is there was TOO many characters, most of whom went underused and didn't do anything of relevance leaving me wondering why they were even included in the first place.
They have got to make X-Men Battle of the Atom a movie directed by Bryan Singer. If you want the First Class and the present Day X-Men cast to be together in one screen? You will get it in Battle of the Atom
Would be cool is Shogo's powers were solely 4th wall Mind Manipulation as Amy insinuated. Would have the reader questioning there own sentiments on a character while reading. :P great idea

I know this kind of stories have not been very popular in America (unlike Europe) but i think that the life and times of Scrooge McDuck is the best comic book i have ever read .

I've never read an X-Men comic, but after listening to CBG19 and Amy Dallen talk about All New X-Men/Battle of the Atom on the podcast I had to read Vol. 1-3 of All New X-Men in preparation for Battle of the Atom (which I still haven't read, waiting for the release of the TPb later this month).
I am just a sucker for a timey wimey plot line.
How does Wolverine`s bastard child gets presumably adamantium claws?
How does he pass them down? Logan`s mutant power is only healing ability, unless they somehow manage to infuse adamantium into his testicle and sperms. Or is the son another weapons project?
Confirmed for not knowing Wolverine's powers. He has bone claws, as did Daken and X-23, but both were given Adamantium claws (and Daken had a muramasa blade shard or some shit at one point). Raze obviously didn't have that. Those are just bone claws. Brown =/= Adamantium.
How knows. Alls I know is that I thought we just got rid of Daken (although he's like a fungus, he just keeps coming back, so he could be back for all i know) and I don't need another Dakenlike asshat running around trying to fuck Logan's shit up because of their stupid inferiority complex.

***** That bone claw thing still kind of annoys me. It was much cooler when Wolverine was a rather low powered mutant that got a HUGE boost by someone lacing his skeleton with adamantium and giving him bionic (presumably) pure adamantium claws. They used to specifically state that they were pure, and Frank Miller used to draw them like they were razors. Granted, John Byrne drew them like claws from the beginning but I still like the pure adamantium and total add-on better.
Now, I will grant you that him having bone claws does make it more interesting when he has children, who then have claws, but the Guardians of the Galaxy had a future descendant of his who had organic steel claws (and bones) and that was when the claws were an add-on for Wolverine.
comicbookgirl19 I am guessing you hate Daken. I thought his inferiority complex was stupid as well but there are moments that I personally liked him particularly when Remender wrote him in Uncanny especially during his death.
He`s a neglected child watching dear old dad giving the love and support that he didn`t get to strangers. To him Logan is a horrible monster and not the hero he portrays himself to be and he wants to destroy that which is what he`s doing over in Uncanny Avengers.
You guys should do more of these.

There's still so many questions. Who assassinated Blaire? What was the catastrophe that would happen if the original X-Men stayed in the present? If the assassination was the catastrophe then what was the point of the future brotherhood for going back? etc. I liked this story, its resolution, and the ongoing All New X-men series but there is just too much left to answer.
Wolvie lost his healing factor due to a sentient virus destroying it. I highly recommend reading Paul Cornells entire run on Wolverine. It's building up to be a classic Wolverine run.

On one hand, I REALLY HATE Scott for doing a lot of the shit that he did and fall out of his way from the character I had known him to be (the boy scout, the Capt America-esque leader from the gold ol' days).

I've read it, Its good if you love x-men, but not totally accessible if you're not a regular reader of all the x-books. I actually prefer the storyline over on Uncanny Avengers. Though anything drawn by Stuart Immoenen or Oliver Copiel is great though.

Story was fun but no one seems to mind that the artwork in parts 2-9 was really, really sub-par. My sister made the joke that some parts looked like they were done in MS Paint.

I'm still surprised at just how damn good this arc was, the X-Men were in desperate need of a quality crossover. I must admit that I'm sad that Wolverine and the X-men is getting shelved. That was by far the most consistently fun and entertaining X title out there.

I feel like there's too much awesome stuff for me to read in other genres for me to spend my time following 4 or 5 books revolving around the same characters. I'm sure you'll keep me up to date though so I know when to jump back on.

I loved this story arc, especially the cross-series nature of it (new instalments every week *cough* *cough* DC should have done something similar for the long-arse forever evil *cough* cough*) and it's just thrown me further into the X-men world. Previously (like 2 and a half years ago) I wasn't much into X-men, Now picking up some (not all) of their next issues is one of the comic highlights of my week. This series also got me reading Uncanny X-men. :) a fun story all-round.

You guys did a great video and it was a treat to have Amy Dallen and Cap'n Kirk back for reviews, but I'm afraid I have to disagree with you guys. The "game" only changed in one way that I can't foresee being that important anyway. The character banter was excellent, but even though they realize there's a lesson to be learned at the end, they willfully and gratuitously ignore it. I guess the X-Men are just to YOLO for me right now.

I liked this, but it was really confusing for me. I've read only a few issues from Claremont's run in silver age (I'm more of a movie watcher). I've started with All-new X-men only yesterday so I need to lear A LOT about that huge number of mutants who are unknown to me. On the top of that you have this crazy timetravel story which also confused me and ending of this battle was real WTF moment. It was good but nowhere near as awesome as All-new X-men before it.

This story had no real ending and left questions to be answered. The best part of this series was the Hastings days of future past variant and the lego variants.
