      Do you consider some of that comes with the appearance of gray hair as the impression that you are now more experienced in the field?
      There is something to be said for experience. No offense, but if I am in a hospital, or a walk in clinic, and was asked if I wanted to be seen by the 28 yr old only out of med school now for a year, or a 48 yr old that theres a 30 minute wait for, depending on the level of pain, I might patiently wait for the person that I perceive as the more experienced in their field.
      Now is that fair? Maybe not fully, but experience cant be discarded either.
      There is absolutely fields where ageism is a poor thing to decide a decision on, but medical input, maybe not.

    • @mitchellscheer677
      @mitchellscheer677 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      While this is an excellent point, there very much is another end of that spectrum too. While all doctors are required to do continuing medical education, it's more likely that the younger doctors would have the most up to date medical knowledge. For example, a surgeon who recently completed their residency might know less invasive techniques that have been recently developed, which could lower your pain, recovery time, or even likelihood of fatality. An older surgeon on the other hand might not be capable of performing such a procedure since it's harder to keep up with new techniques when you're also busy practicing medicine and engaging in outside life.
      While I understand we all have our own biases, the best approach in my opinion would be to evaluate each doctor individually on how well they are treating you/ taking your concerns seriously. My best experiences are usually those where the first half hour is spent just discussing everything before beginning any sort of examination, and my outcomes from doctors where this has been the case have been phenomenal. @@Canadagraphs

    ‘Why did you become a doctor when you could’ve been a model?
    I really hate those type of questions. I get them sort of the other way around. I’m a bus driver. I’m also fairly smart. People often ask me questions like ‘Why’d you become a bus driver when you could’ve become a lawyer or a doctor?!’ ‘If I was that smart I would’ve never become a bus driver, but I would’ve definitely go on to study something important!’ (first of all I think my job is equally as important... I’m the one driving the nurses and doctors safely to their work) ‘You could make so much more money if you become a doctor or a lawyer!’ etc. You wanna know why I became a bus driver? ‘Cause that’s what I wanted since I was a little girl. I love my job. I don’t wanna be a doctor. I don’t wanna be a lawyer. I wanna drive a 60ft bus around the city, so leave me be. Become a doctor or lawyer yourself if you want, but don’t try to guilt trip me in going back to school, to do something I don’t love.

    I had the most devastating thing said to me the other day when I told my grandma I wanted to become a doctor. She told me "you need to go for a more realistic job" and "you aren't capable of it". This hurt so much because EVERYONE in my family has been pushing me to go to school and to get a job and when I FINALLY decided I wanted become a doctor, they shot me down. It really, really hurts to hear that especially from family members. After hearing the last part of this video I realized that I shouldn't give up. I should prove my family wrong!

      Instead of doing it eith the mindset to prove them wrong, do it because it's something you want to do. My family isn't supportive either, but when I focus on what they think even if it's "im not going to be like you" or "im going to prove your wrong" im giving them too much importance and wasting time thinking about them even if it's to show them up. Distancing yourself from downers is honestly the healthiest.

    I once failed an interview for housekeeping because the hiring Director felt that "it would be a waste for someone with my looks to work as a cleaner". At the time I was really poor and was struggling to eat, but I was happy I could apply for a job that not only was well paying but also I knew I would genuinely like since I absolutely love cleaning. So imagine my shock and disappointment when the only reason given to why I wasn't hired was because she felt that it would be a waste for my looks. She felt insulted for herself, for her fellow students, and decided that she is gonna ace everything so that none can question her abilities. Savage woman.
    I didn't have that much strength as her but I still turned it out somehow :) Now I am a SysAdmin in IT so a male field as well. Previously I was IT Helpdesk Lead and had 8 guys, most of them younger, answer to me. At first people would come into the room and try to talk to the oldest guy in the room, or at least A GUY, and they would always direct those people to me or ask me what to do. Long story short when I was leaving that company I was nicknamed "IT Queen", almost everyone knew me but not our manager, and dozens of people predicted dark times.. xD

I am a registered nurse with ICU background and I do case management amd clinical navigation now for the uninsured and underinsured and link them to community health resources. You guys are the unsung heros of medicine. You literally see it all and manage care and send to appropriate specialty and then put it all together after you get 5 different reports from specialists. Plus the amount of teaching you do on top of it all! literally paused this video after you talked about family medicine to comment this.

      It feels sooooo good when you prove everyone wrong though.
      When I was in high school I decided to join the wrestling team. I wasn't fat, but not super muscular either. "Husky" is the right term I guess. My teammates underestimated me and berated me right from the start. What they didn't know is that my dad was a professional cage fighter, and that I probably knew as much or more about grappling and submission techniques. What I didn't know was the rules when it comes to wrestling. So when everyone saw my first sparring partner(who was a bit bigger and more muscular than me)on the ground in tears from an arm bar everyone gave me the respect I deserved...and coach wasn't too happy about his star wrestler getting wrecked, and explained to me that you couldn't do moves like that in that style of wrestling.
      I only lost two matches that season as a brand new wrestler.

    I find another common addition to the entire “attractive must equal dumb” is that nurses only start in the field to marry a doctor! ESPECIALLY if you are considered “conventionally attractive!” This can also create another degree of detrimental separation within the healthcare team if one of the members within that team have this mentality. Nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, etc are NOT necessarily less intelligent than the doctors on a team; they merely have a different role within that team whose goal should be to work together for the best possible outcome of the patient!!

I have gone to school for this too as well as have worked in the field for 7 years now. I dont have a doctorate but I do have a medical degree of my own.
      There's also the fact that people just with nursing is a step to being a doctor. While for many it could be, nursing is a valid degree and career choice in its own right. I am allowed to want to stop at the title nurse, however that looks to those with the degree. A CNA can strive for being a RN without ever considering becoming a Nurse Practioner, or even beyond that.

    Most of us feel bad because people think we are not attractive. Dr mike knows he looks good but he is still offended when people ask him why he became a doctor because he looks good. He’s not offended because they are saying he’s so beautiful or handsome. He’s offended because they are implying that good looking people are dumb or should only have careers in modeling. If he’s smart and wants to be a doctor then he should be able to do that. I’m actually really proud of him for saying that. It proves that looks aren’t everything whether you look good or not.

    I am a board-certified anesthesiologist, 20+ years. You have NO idea how offensive it is to have to explain, sometimes multiple times a day, that I am a physician. That I have a degree from an accredited medical school. That the surgeon and I were classmates (well, that only happened twice). That, functionally, yes I'm a drug pusher but my role in any patient's care is infinitely more important.
    BTW, no one has ever mistaken me for a model. They've instead mistaken me for housekeeping, patient transport, customer service, administration--- occasionally, another will assume I'm a nurse. It is not my intention to minimize the various roles any person may assume on a hospital staff, but I had the same education you did.

I mean, your job is the only thing that makes surgery POSSIBLE. Without you, every operation would be an absurdly traumatic and horrifying experience that probably ends in death 3 out of 4 times from shock, rushed work causes issues, and accidents due to thrashing patients screaming till their vocal cords shred. Yeah the surgeon able to treat a blood vessel in the brain about to rupture may get all the glory, but you are the only reason it can even be tried in the first place.

    Thank you for addressing the stereotypes associated with being a professional and also being physically attractive. I’ve found in a lot of my jobs that when I progress quickly, other people automatically assume that I must be sleeping with the boss. This type of thinking fuels the assumptions that 1) women can’t progress like men professionally unless they’re sleeping their way up the ladder and 2) that all of my hard work means nothing. So I appreciate you passionately addressing the fact that attractive people can be smart too and can succeed based on their brains, not just their looks.

Everyone just assumes that good looking people don't even have to try and they just need to look pretty, as if that's all they got. I have a friend who experienced a similar struggle. She was the prettiest in our team but our co-workers often have these side comments whenever she achieved something remarkable and eventually got promotion. They always assume that she got it because she "slept her way through it to the bosses" to make it. Freaking disgusting and disrespectful at the same time, her looks that supposed to be a good thing became her biggest disadvantage in everything she does because it always voids her hardwork. Luckily, she transferred somewhere else with a better environment that actually recognizes her capabilities, and not just being looked at as "another pretty face".

    “Why be a doctor when you could have been a model?”. This question seems to me like its more about the money than your capabilities. Like, why did you become a doctor when you are handsome enough to be a model, a job with much more income. Or a job with approximately the same income but much less responsibility. The question seems like its hiding the assumption that you became a doctor for the money. The answer is obviously because these are completely different jobs and you just love medicine, but, unfortunately , for a lot of people their choice of field is based on income and not on interest.

No offense to Dr. Mike, he definitely looks like he puts a lot of effort into his appearance and health, but the reality is probably more like any other artistic/expressive career... some luck is needed to make it big even when you look great. But I don't think people are thinking that far into it when they ask an offhanded question like that.
      Also from what I've heard, not all doctors make a whole lot of money! If a doctor decides to start their own practice they have to make sure their specialty isn't already flooded in that area and it's probably pretty expensive to run an office. Definitely needs passion for their specialty, or they'll sink. I don't wanna speculate too much on Dr. Mike's financial stuff but it seems like he's at least doing well, so sorry about my unrelated tangent lol. I know they are just people which scares me to think that lol because people make mistakes and it’s more comforting to think Doctors don’t make mistakes, especially when you are really scared. I recently just had to have a c section so I was trying to really trust that they knew what they were doing and I wasn’t going to die. They blocked me way up so it felt like I could barely breathe and the anesthesiologist that was standing at my head said I would know if you weren’t breathing so that was kinda comforting. I guess I was scared I was gonna throw up or pass out cause I hadn’t eaten in like 24 hours but they told me I was fine so I believed them and felt some better just hoping they know their stuff and trusting they won’t kill you is all you can do when you are in certain situations.

    10:02.
    When I was in high school I was the shy kid. Everyone talked behind my back, they said hurtful things, and the whole “being alone during high school” thing was really hard for me. Of course, I found my little group of friends and I slowly started to leave my shyness behind, but the talking would never stop. I was the weird kid who would never get to accomplish anything in life.
    Fast forward to September 2020: I graduated high school on December 2019 and went to a beauty pageant casting in my hometown. I got in and even though everyone thought I wouldn’t make it too far, I’m now top 7 out of 104 girls who competed since the beginning. I’m still competing in the National stage of Miss World Costa Rica. I continue to prove everyone wrong and it feels amazing. The shy, weird kid who would never accomplish anything is on her way to potentially represent Costa Rica on the most important beauty pageant in the world❤️❤️

      Wouldn't it be pretty bad if someone would give a unconscious person chest compressions. As far as I know it should only be given when the heart stopped beating ( no pulse & no breathing). Otherwise you're breaking a person's ribs and are messing with their heartbeat even though the heart is beating fine. But correct me if I'm wrong.

      @jidapa8639 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scenepacksandedits8577 you could be unconscious and not breathing and still have a heartbeat tho, depending on how long you've not been breathing. Just worried that people will go around giving out chest compression when they see passed out people.

    Thank you for being you. I'm going to say you are very right about people judging others because of their appearance, I'm definitely guilty of this. Mine has been mostly believing attractive men are not good people and this was brought out of my subconscious when I worked for one who ended up changing my life in a very positive way. I would like to bring up when I was in practicum at a retirement home I was warned that I will encounter resistance who will hate me on sight because I remind them of someone they use to know so I should never take anything negative personally because it isn't about you. I realized after working through this how often I had allowed things like this in normal life destroy my joy.
    Again thank you for being you, keep up the good work.
