How wonderful that you were able to share some of your memories on set with us. It's truly an honor to have you in our sci-fi / nerd / tech community. Congrats on the light saber prop! Darth Maul was always my favorite. His coolness is yet to be matched in the star wars franchise. Would love to see you guys getting Ray Park to sign that saber!

Brilliant episode. We've just done watching the prequel trilogy again ready for Kenobi starting. I'm in my late 40's now and grew up with the original trilogy, and that's where my heart will always be. I really enjoy the prequel trilogy, I've never been a trendy person so I never jumped on the hate bandwagon. As Brody starts to climb the mast of the Orca I can see a section onscreen that is sat in a glass display cabinet here, it blows my mind. Good show guys.
I really love your show. It’s always fun to watch. This episode is one of your best, just to see your eyes glow up when you tell your lightsaber stories.
That's AWESOME! Congrats to you guys, an amazing piece of history you've got there! Back when Lucasfilm's was enhancing/re-releasing Episode IV-VI, my wife surprised me with a trip to the Nashville mall. There, we met Anthony Daniels, the great Peter Mayhew and Warwick Davis. It was a a surreal experience, likely much like holding the actual sabre prop in your hands. Congrats again!
That’s so cool! I had the pleasure of sitting next to Peter all weekend at a signing in Newfoundland. Such a sweet guy. Angie his wife too. And I worked with Anthony on Ep3. Actually I was his Stand-in for one day. He came up to me and said, “Aren’t you a little tall for a droid?” And I replied, “Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?” He just stared at me trying to decide how to take that. Then smiled and introduced himself! Phew!
@@RetroRecipes I can't image what that must have been like for you, to be a part of something so massively loved by so many. It great owning a movie prop. 👍 I bought a knife used by Will Ferrell from "Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me" from the Prop Store many years ago. It's used at the start of the scene where Mustapha says to Austin "he cant stand being asked the same question 3 times". Great video as always! 👍

You might need to consider in the future whether there is just the one prop and whether it was the one that was used during shooting, because there might have been more. I have seen enough Pawn Stars to know those things matter. Maybe one day you will be on Pawn Stars, but hopefully not as that would indicate a sale price of ~60%. Also, probably best to consider any damage on it in another light: what restoration does to devaluing things. Treat it as a special kind of fragile, something that should not be repaired even if it can be. There is an Adam Savage video ('Adam Savage Meets Original Star Wars Props!') with the Revenge of the Sith lightsaber. It looks like it has similar wear, but that one is very light (at some point light saber fighting did get a bit comical with being able to virtually control the swings with your fingers; I prefer the weightier look of fighting).

Oh yes. It's going to be a very interesting summer. Perifractic (Darth Fractic?), sitting in KITTesla as it drives itself, leaning out the window and swinging Darth Maul's lightsaber.. It's going to be dangerous... or fun. Maybe dangerous fun... We'll soon find out. But, for sure, life will not be the same... Edited to add: Yeeeeepp... And he's already injured himself. Which is going to make this even more dangerous... or fun... or both. Hopefully your eye heals up okay.
As regards screen-matching, keep in mind that if it has cast elements, then marks can show up on multiple castings that were in the mold from the master. It's possible that multiples were made if that's the case. Also, please don't have anyone sign the actual prop. Sign the plaque or stand or something else.
That is a good point. However as it has several metal parts including that dinged top piece and the hand engraved metal ends, and is super heavy, I’m convinced this is the original that others may have been moulded from. There was an Australian company that sold a replica moulded from the original for example. And of course we have the certificate of authenticity that calls it the hero prop. But if anyone has an identical one let us know 😅
There were at least one prop each made with metal buttons ("hero prop" for closeups), with buttons in the cast ("hero prop" like this), and with painted circles instead of buttons ("stunt props"). All of these did probably have cast resin bodies, and it is possible that the body that was moulded for this prop might have been a cast off a resin body with metal buttons. However, among the marks on this prop matched to the reference picture are not just bubbles in the body, but also bubbles in the buttons - and those must be unique to this prop! If this prop had been a cast of the prop in the picture, then it would be likely to have more small bubbles that don't show up in the picture, and I can't see that. I too think that you should never have an actor sign an authentic prop: that would lower its value. Let them sign a stand, photo or plaque that you display next to the prop.
Guys, a proper high-res 3D-scan of this would mean the world for a lot of 3D/VFX artists... Just saying. 😅 Congratulations on winning the auction, this clearly did get the best new home possible.
@@RetroRecipes yes, that would be a good choice, and since you have controllable light and the shapes/materials aren't too complicated, this might even create good results when done with an phone. But of course you can always go crazier with a real camera and software like 3DF Zephyr or Meshroom. 😅
I wouldn't be surprised if fellow TH-camr Adam Savage (who also worked on Episodes I-III) asks to come and photograph and measure i so he can make a replica.
You could just have some LED strip mounted on the wall on either side. There are strips with built-in diffusers, made to look like neon. But, for the prop's value's sake, I think I would rather put it in a glass case to protect it from dust, children and drunk relatives.
Just a request but could you give the measurements of the lightsaber especially in Milimeters if possible Would love to know how long it actually is. And the weight too if possible And congratz on acquiring this piece of history
Well from what you said, it clearly can't be the real thing... we all know it's a LIGHT sabre, not a HEAVY sabre! 😉. Congratulations on winning it, but just be careful when you try doing the Darth Maul jumping, spinning thing. You could poke your other eye out. 😁
Love this channel. Odd question maybe, but because I’m a fan and you’re quite a tech guy: Your channel is one of the few channels that sometimes freezes (just the image) when casting from a phone to the TH-cam app. Do you know why that is? Is it a setting some uploaders have?
Fantastic and entertaining as always! We often make the comment but don't realize how time passes so fast that it's already "retro"! I'm jealous again and need one! PS You know Ladyfractic activated that saber with the force; a ploy to take over the show! 🤣
One of the best scenes, if not THE best scene in all the Star Wars movies, is the battle with Darth Maul. I only wish that we had a movie using the story from The Clone Wars Animated TV show. From the Night Sisters with his brother, to being the next Sith Lord Apprentice. Also, have you seen the Darth Vader vs Ben Kenobi fight reimagined? th-cam.com/video/to2SMng4u1k/w-d-xo.html
Congrats to your new aquisition. :) I bought the bluray-box of the prequels two weeks ago, because i am interested in the comments of George Lucas and all the others genius people who made these movies happen. Insane 3d graphics for the time. In the comments they mentioned a group of british actors , who played the naboo figthers...
@@RetroRecipes Christian, If you have the blue-ray box there is a commentary option, where you watch the movie and listen to the commentary of George Lucas..very interesting, whole new experience. There is a scene where you and your squadron stand in front of a buescreen and everything around was cgi..there you and your friends were mentioned
@@GeorgesChannel Amazing. I have the DVDs but I’m wondering if he did a new commentary for Blu-Ray. It might be in the streaming extras too. Was that for Episode I for sure?
@@RetroRecipes I found the scene, timeindex 2:05:00. Its the scene directly after Quaigons death: The commentator says: ".. Then we have a number of bluescreen people that were shot in England...". And I think i found you there standing in the formation smiling slightly at Padme...:) Actually i rewatched the movie with audiocomment in the hope i can find you somewhere..would be cool if you can tell where you are in some scenes..
@@GeorgesChannel Nice work. Actually I’m not in that scene. That was filmed much later as they may have mentioned. I have a few blink and you’ll miss it moments but the clearest is at 2:08:54 directly above Padme ☺️
The screen recording shown wasn’t the actual auction for this item. At the top I put text “Example of a similar auction”. It did go for the mid to high 5 figures 😬
@@RetroRecipes I was just thinking that no way in bleep that was only 10 grand. Personally the one prop I would sell my kidneys is the one ring from LOTR. Though if Elijah Wood would even think about selling that ring, it would lose a ton of it's value. That ring hypnotized me in theaters 20yrs ago and I feel like I would be like Gollum if I had the ring. Or as a massive Stanley Kubrick fan, having the hat of Alex from A Clockwork Orange, or Jack Torrance/Nicholson's axe from The Shining, or the typewriter, and I would be a happy man.
@@juzujuzu4555 All amazing props. There’s so many I’d love to own. I did snag one more thing from the auction. photos.app.goo.gl/Q4HEaoA16mRbr74n9 I couldn’t believe it went for well under $5k. Can’t wait to show this episode to my wife. Fantastic per usual!
Thanks mate!
I am certain that you could get Ray Park to pose with you and the hero prop.. He seems to be a nice guy.. :)
Do not get drunk close to that one or let a drunk friend get close to it. You know what will happend
Good stuff!
This is a fantastic piece of memorabilia to own. Congratulations!
You just need a Naboo starfighter now :)
Actually… no I’ll share that some other time
Sweet!
I don't understand why I am no longer receiving notifications from this channel whenever a new video is up : (

Haha well predicted!
Excellent 🙂👍
C’est une belle pièce! Chouette acquisition ✌️🕹
Merci!
In a twist of fates, somehow Palpatine has returned, and this saber landed not far from where it should be, congrats!
Good point. Would a Polycam scan suffice or if not what should I aim to use?
@@RetroRecipes yes, that would be a good choice, and since you have controllable light and the shapes/materials aren't too complicated, this might even create good results when done with an phone. But of course you can always go crazier with a real camera and software like 3DF Zephyr or Meshroom. 😅
@@maikmueller Cool I’ll look into it. What’s the best way to get it to 3D artists?
I wouldn't be surprised if fellow TH-camr Adam Savage (who also worked on Episodes I-III) asks to come and photograph and measure i so he can make a replica.
I’m available!
Very cool... If the ends have metal in the centre, you could use Neodymium magnets to attach 3D printed "beams" to each end
Oh boy they do!
@@RetroRecipes 🤩
If the metal is copper, it's sadly not magnetic...Fingers crossed!
You could just have some LED strip mounted on the wall on either side.
There are strips with built-in diffusers, made to look like neon.
But, for the prop's value's sake, I think I would rather put it in a glass case to protect it from dust, children and drunk relatives.
VERY COOL !!! 👹👹👹 Congratulations on your "investment" 🥰
It's a shame that Maul just appears in this movie, he needs more background story to cover him better. I love his design.
Well he is hugely explored in The Clone Wars and is in Solo too.
Cool.
Can I suggest using the Akai Force next time?
The only thing better than owning that is owing a REAL lightsaber. I sure hope they are working on making them. Congrats!
Just a request but could you give the measurements of the lightsaber especially in Milimeters if possible
Would love to know how long it actually is.
And the weight too if possible
And congratz on acquiring this piece of history
Well from what you said, it clearly can't be the real thing... we all know it's a LIGHT sabre, not a HEAVY sabre! 😉. Congratulations on winning it, but just be careful when you try doing the Darth Maul jumping, spinning thing. You could poke your other eye out. 😁
At least I have A Nother (there is another eye walker)
Love this channel. Odd question maybe, but because I’m a fan and you’re quite a tech guy:
Your channel is one of the few channels that sometimes freezes (just the image) when casting from a phone to the TH-cam app. Do you know why that is? Is it a setting some uploaders have?
Sorry I haven't heard that before and can't think of a reason. I mean this in a helpful way but I suspect it's an error at your end ;-)
Fantastic and entertaining as always! We often make the comment but don't realize how time passes so fast that it's already "retro"! I'm jealous again and need one! PS You know Ladyfractic activated that saber with the force; a ploy to take over the show! 🤣
Haha you could be right!
You've basically got a star wars wife
Small thing..but that she used the word "ignite" when talking about lightsabers shows that she is a real fan!
Yes that video is amazing!
Oh wow that’s cool! That’s me and my squadron. Do you know what the name of that documentary was or how I might find it?
I'm curious about how it is made. Was it machined from a single piece of metal or what?
The ends are metal and the main body seems to be painted resin. But it’s so heavy that I think the resin contains a metal core.
Cool! I'm kind of surprised it didn't go for MORE money. Was the auction a little under publicized? Were potential bidders a bit wary?
The screen recording shown wasn’t the actual auction for this item. At the top I put text “Example of a similar auction”. It did go for the mid to high 5 figures 😬
@@RetroRecipes Oops, I stand corrected!
Then again it is just a piece of paper ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But ESB was a pivotal movie in my life. So this was a must have for me.
