He’s right though. I just watched Linekar and Richards go on about how much better it was yesterday; it wasnt. It was exactly the same performance we’ve seen all competition; cant score goals, no goal threat, Foden ineffective, Kane not looking great, late to make changes, and we go through by the skin of our teeth. A win is win, so congrats to the team (especially penalty takers), but a penalty shootout win is no vindication of a teams performance; they’re as much down to luck as skill. We’re in the SF’s now… any reason to expect we’ll play better? nope.
Agree. England doesn't have shooters and runners, and it shows from the lack of shots on target. The style of Kane and Saka (as great as he was yesterday) is ploddy and slows down the game. Awful football to watch.

I have no emotional attachment to this england team. Dreadful to watch and if the players do progress and win it'll be in spite of Southgate

Trippier on the left is my one real gripe with southgate. He is basically sacrificing the whole left as an attacking option playing him. Hes got away with it JUST in two games.

He inherited winners the under 21s won the World Cup and he literally has 3 of the best players in Europe in his side ( not that you'd know the way they're playing ) he leaves his best talent on the bench and plays the rest of them out of position. Southgate just needs to go post this tournament. Nice guy, blah blah, unified the team spirit, blah blah, but no tactical nous whatsoever. Manages with fear, and haunted by his own euros 96 penalties miss. Just get Kane off, Trippier off, put on Toney or Watkins and get on Gordon. That caller was right - this England play the most boring football EVER, and the win vs Switzerland wasn't this incredible improvement. Kane's goal record is not 'sensational', he's scored 21 penalties, which is quite unbelievable, and most of the others have been against the likes of San Marino.
Congratulations, someone else who sees that Kane is useless. I keep saying he’s another Andy Cole, need a load of shots to actually score and when he does it’s some team like Macedonia then he score 3 and then everyone says how great he is.
Southgate is like the past managers in that they let the team shoot at their own goal trying to score for the opposition.

There’s the problem again. Southgate thinks the team are playing well and so he makes no changes. How he can watch that performance and think we’re actually playing well completely baffles me and just proves he’s not fit for purpose. He’s getting through these games because the squad has too much quality individually, but he will get found out when we have an even match. I’ll support the team until the end, but this manager is just proving how delusional he is every single game.

@SimonFlynn-un1ur All the changes that have been made throughout the matches were all after gis tactics didn't work. Hail marys and last ditch attempts when his hamd was forced in reaction. To say it was HIS subs as though that was his tactical plan is completely disingenuous how they came about. He's won 1 game out of 5 in 90 mins as the supposed favourites with our bookies. There's only so much you can do by performing poorly and winning games before being found out. Fans, pundits, current and ex players, home and abroad have all pointed out the obvious tactical errors. And again, he only changed when his hand has been forced. The fact is we have been getting through on moments from individuals, not because of SG's set up, that is evidential. Being a defensive minded coach is fine, but experimenting in a tournament, being indecisive, being reactive not proactive, is the glaring deficiancies of his mamagement that is standing out. We have scraped through to another semi final from indivifual play yet again, despite of SG, not because of. The argument of SG takingvus to us to semis and a final os also disingenuous and lacks all context. We've seen better performing England teams before who weren't favourites, go out earlier playing better football - BUT against World Class oppostion in earlier rounds. SG has never faced a comparitive fixture in the early rounds, never. When we have met them down the line (and no where near as good as by the way like 98 Argies), we've lost.

@@SimonFlynn-un1ur it’s not about Southgate predicting that they were going to score, it’s the fact we weren’t playing well and we needed to change something. We hadn’t had a shot on target until Saka scored. I don’t think it’s wrong to expect him to make a change before 75 minutes when we haven’t shown anything close to a goal. But again, it’s because Southgate thinks we are playing well and so he keeps it the same and then reacts to the goal. That’s wrong and it’s delusional, and it’ll catch up to him like it always does.

This all does sound terribly unpatriotic but although we won the game we are are very very hard watch. Compare us against other teams and we just look average at best. Spain, Germany, Turkey etc... these teams play with style, guts, risk, excitement is never too far away. Its a puzzle to understand why we just look like we do....anyway 2 to play for success. The Netherlands will be a tough test that is certain. If we loose then irrespective we must change who and how we do things at international level.
The fact Foden hasn’t been dropped yet shows Southgate has no balls. Foden and Bellingham cannot play together.

@@rLxJake - Spot on, it's Bellingham or Foden, you can't play both. Southgate has always done this, overload the team with false 10s in the belief he's filling a midfield berth. In fact at one point I think he was playing Deli Ali plus two Deli Ali clones. Can't remember names, one of them was a Man U lad. May as well tie their laces together and throw a pantomime horse costume over them.
Foden is worth a look for his club form but clearly he doesn't outshine Bellingham. I did think he (Foden) looked a little lost without his South American and Spanish club mates around him but on reflection it's Southgate's fault. He (Southgate) primes the team with pedantic, negative instructions instead of setting up to play their own game. This is evident at the start of games when players of Declan Rice's ability are playing 'to-me-to-you' balls with no purpose whatsoever - just zipping it back and forth along a straight line. It's the footballing equivalent of slamming on the brakes when you see an oncoming car in the distance. That's Southgate through and through.
It's alien to Rice; he's looking to make progressive triangles and zig-zags - not have his own pass shoved back down his throat. This is why he's often caught on his heels in receipt of a pass. Always in danger of being caught in possession - for no purpose. Other than the pedantic instruction of pedestrian training ground drills. It's Southgate.
Why is Southgate there? He's the FA's absolute dry dream of a dust curator.
Some people half-joke about replacing Southgate with Big Sam. I credit them that they know Sam would be an improvement - just that the FA would never act so boldly. Sam managed England for one game before being thrown out on the basis of a journalist cash bung sting. We won 1-0. Sam is peerless in terms of statistic averages.
I recall Sam's press announcement before that game: "If they're good enough to be selected for international honours, they shouldn't need a lot of coaching. I'll tell them to play their own game within a simple remit of going wide when in possession and narrow when out of possession."
The current players are good enough, they don't need their heads filling with Southgate's anxieties about tapping the brake pedal whenever an opposition player looks at them.
And I agree that Saka has shown something in every game despite Southgate's stunting tactics.

Why should Kane do it? Southgate is getting paid an awful lot of money to make calls like this. He should take him off, but he doesn't have the guts, just like he didn't have the guts to take Foden off either.

Southgate philosophy is simple dont concede any goals. Attacking leaves you vulnerable so dont attack. Result - go to pens. He's right to an extent because international football is impossible to coach because you have so little time to be together.
