I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my grandfather on Dec 29, also in his 80s. Thank you for the video. Grandpa's funeral was yesterday and this made my first day back at work a little easier.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad Martin. That was really cool that you have his old character sheet and found the present he planned to give you for your Christmas gift. Listening to that record will always keep him close.
My condolences for your loss. And thank you for pointing out the patterns of evolution of monsters from OD&D through Holmes Basic to AD&D. One thing I liked about the Monster Manual is a serious effort to provide images for as many monsters as possible, courtesy of Dave Trampier and Dave Sutherland III. These images were great for understanding what the depicted monster looks like, and also sometimes gave inspiration about using the creature - the bulette on the inside cover that has attacked a mounted party and has grabbed a hapless horse, or the giant ants crawling over a prone adventurer while her torch-wielding companion tries to ward the ants away all get me interested in using the monster. And finally the monsters that are sort of outside the five-point alignment system include the lich, nightmare and night hag (all given alignment of Neutral (Evil)) while the larva is simply given the alignment of Evil.
I'm glad you were able to visit you dad so much at the end and that he still had such clarity of mind. We wish you luck getting through this rough patch
Condolences. I lost both my parents around the pandemic. My mom a year before it, and my dad during it, in July 2020. Even with some plans in place, the process is grueling and exhausting and never ending. I’m happy you are finally at the point where you can put out a new video. Getting back into a normal routine can be tough, but it can help get things back in focus. Congrats to the contest winners! Enjoy your prizes!
Dearest Martin. Thoughts and condolences for the loss of your father. ❤️🩹. My father passed in a hospital incident a few years ago, and I still haven’t I gotten over it. Love you and blessings to you and your family. ❤🙏🇺🇸
Welcome back!!!!! When I was a kid it was the monsters in the Monster Manual that I got to look at originally that drew me in. The pictures were so cool, and creepy. Then the Fiend Folio made it even better!
Thank you so much. I definitely enjoy the Fiend Folio a lot as well - make sure to catch my video about it if you haven't had a chance to watch yet: th-cam.com/video/hdtCS_QoLRM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JjLeW6DcJfXXq4xA Thanks for watching and commenting.
Those old line drawings were creepy and - yes - Fiend Folio particularly. If you want an even more intense version of that style take a look at the illustrations in the early Fighting Fantasy solo gamebooks.
So glad you are back, but so sorry to hear about your dad. That was a lovely tribute. Part of what is so special about your channel is how personal it is, especially when you talk about your family, whether it's memories of mom buying you particular games or you running games for your daughter and her friends. That creates a special intimacy in addition to your encyclopedic knowledge of the hobby. I know that this platform can be unforgiving about the need to churn out new content, but please take all the time you need for you and your family and know that we'll be here as an audience for you. Beyond that, your bonus content was particularly touching for me. I also used to go into my dad's office where I'd use the photocopier to make copies of blank character sheets (usually for TSR's Marvel Super-Heroes Role Playing Game). I mostly okayed solo as an only child with few friends in the hobby (perhaps you could do a future video on solo TSR modules?) I too tried to get him to play RPGs to no avail, but like your dad he was always supportive of my hobbies and interest. I share your love for jazz as well. Back in college I went to Bee Orleans for Jazz Fest (something I highly recommend), where I saw Herbie Hancock play. And when I lived in New York, I used to see Mingus Big Band play all the time, even getting to meet and sit with Charles Mingus's widow during one of the shows. So this video brought back lots of fond memories for me in addition to the usual learning and enjoyment. Again, my sincere condolences to you and your family (and stay safe with the fires out here!)
What a lovely story about your Dad and the record. His character sheet was fun to see as well. Great parents are not that common. I think we lucked out with ours. I was happy to hear Arnson didn't care about Alignment. I think you are going to do a number of videos on AD&D. I could do an hour just on the things I hate about AD&D. 😅 The Monster Manual is great and I enjoyed the comparisons. Thanks again for the nice things you said about Holmes Basic. Sorry for your loss. I feel you. ❤❤❤
So sorry to hear about your loss. As always I enjoy your videos, but you’re allowed to give yourself the space to grieve. We will all be here when you get to us.
My good man i had thought you had simply taken some family time off. I am so sorry for your loss. My father is quickly approaching the same age and I dread the day I get that call. I was lucky enough to have both mom and dad visit for Christmas this year. I treasure that experience, bittersweet as it is. Treasure that album and character sheet sir and know that while your father may not have gotten you sometimes, but he knew you.
Martin, so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I can relate. My father passed on December 17th, 2024 after 2 months in the hospital. He was 87. It made the holidays very sombre but more meaningful with my son. Thanks for sharing your experience of trying to get your Dad to play. It's a great tribute to your relationship. ✌❤
So sorry for your loss Martin. I know there is really nothing I can say or do to ease the pain of losing a father, but I wanted to give you this small gift to help you and your family during this difficult time. Condolences and may you find peace in fond memories of your father.
The treasure tables are pre 'Convention-Era-Oh Yeah, You Can Beat Any Trap Gary', after he met about 200K of shmucks telling him he's awesome but his monster are too low powered. Just as the coke era arrived, D&D became some silly contest...which produced some amazing results...Elemental Evil, Tomb of Horrors (the top Kill Room Arneson could think of in collaboration). I read 'Lost Caverns of Tsojanth' first when I read the Blue Box in 1982. There was no equal to the incoming obsession.
I had a bag of those monsters I got from a dime store back in the mid-late '70s. Funny thing was when I first saw them in the 1st ed. Monster Manual I assumed that some Hong Kong company had gotten a copy of the manual and based them off it. It's only years later I found out it was the other way around! I really wish I still had them... Sorry to hear about your dad Martin, I lost my dad about five years ago. My dad's health had been failing for years, so it wasn't really a surprise when he passed. I'm not sure which is harder, having to suffer from watching a loved one's health decline for years like mine or for them to be suddenly ripped from you like yours. In any case I'm glad you have the final Christmas gift from him to treasure.
@ I’m sure I can speak for all here; very sorry for your sad news Martin. (and a broken oven to boot). We’re all subbed so if you take a break we’re not far away and will get the notification
42:44 -- Hehe. I jumped ship to Pathinder during the 4e era, and later learned that 4e and 5e players started calling Pathfinder "Mathfinder" due to its complexity. 😆 That always gets a chuckle out of me.
Thanks so much for your interest and for commenting so quickly. It really helps promote the video! I hope you enjoy the video when you get to it. Cheers.
If I'm remembering correctly, there were some powerful creatures that needed at least a +2 (or higher) magical weapon to hit. That's how I used to interpret Yeonoghu's +2 Magic Missile.
Well my heart goes out to you and your family! Losing loved ones is especially hard on the Holidays, it colors them pretty melancholy for at least a few years if not forever. Take care of yourself that kind of thing is not resolved overnight and I'm sure it will sting for some time. Glad you got to be with him at least.
Thanks for the great vid! I got my Hardcover copy of your book, as Canada Post went back to work. Thank you so much, can’t wait to use it for Shadowdark/OSE!
That is so great to hear! Thank you so much for letting me know, and I look forward to hearing how it works in your game. Cheers, and thanks for your support.
I’m very sorry that your dad has passed. It’s not easy… mine passed in 2021 at 71. I’m happy that your Dad made the effort to play with you, the game that we all love so much. We’re all glad that you’re back.
Oh Martin, I am SO sorry to hear about your father. I lost both of my parents several years ago and I can probably count on 1 hand the days I have not thought of them over that time. Holidays are the worst for losing our loved ones and the best for remembering them. You are now part of a club none of us want to be a member of, but know that 1) you are not alone and 2) there is no time limit on grief. Peace to you and your family.
Totally all right. There is a lot of content out there. But I'm glad to have you here, and I really appreciate that you commented right away. It's really helps the video gain traction. Happy New Year to you.
I marvel at your ability to speak fluidly off-the-cuff, with fully formed sentences in your head. That's a skill some people have, and I don't. I can't shut my brain off, even to communicate thoughts. Public speaking for me is like trying to talk over myself, lol.
Condolences to you and your family on your loss. I lost my mother in August. Thanks for the great video, and congrats to the winners. Keep up the great work!
Welcome back. I know how hard it can be to lose a dad close to the holidays. Next week will be 10 years since mine passed. He's the reason I'm into d&d, so watching your channel about the editions he played growing up makes me think of him.
Thank you so much for this lovely comment. I'm sorry for the loss of your dad. My mom passed over 10 years ago and it still hurts. I'm glad you can find some nice memories of your dad by watching my channel. That's good to hear. All my best to you.
Sorry for your loss, lost my dad in a similar way a couple of years ago. I haven't played any OD&D other than OSR stuff but when i saw the thumbnail it gave me nostalgia for my collection of plastic mutant dinosaurs that I played with as a child. I got them at a garage sale in the 90s, so they're pretty old. It'd be funny if they were used for D&D since they somewhat inspired me to play it when I got older.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed the video and that it sparked some nostalgia for you. Those plastic toys were definitely responsible for the creation of some of D&D's most iconic monsters!
I was introduced to AD&D through the second edition. But I still want to experience a first edition game some time. I think I will give it a chance using OSRIC.
@daves6220 I was thinking about giving OSRIC a try because people say it's organization and usability is superior. I don't play D&D in ages, I play more rules light games those days, so an easy to use version of the rules would be very important for me.
Condolences on your loss. My Father passed away on December 2, 2024 after a prolonged deterioration in his health, so I can offer sincere sympathy. Thank you for sharing your experiences and stories - I’ve enjoyed all your videos and the enthusiasm you have put into this effort. Wishing you find peace and comfort.
If your stovetop is working but the oven isn't, it may be a board relay that burned out. You can get a replacement for approx $20 bucks and you just need to do a bit of basic soldering to swap it out. That happened to me a few months ago.
Good to hear you back! Lost my Dad a few years ago, it is not easy, but they live on in our memories! I started with the B/X boxed sets and got AD&D as a later printing, but only ever played Castle Amber under its rules, only knew of Gamma World from Dragon magazine pieces and never knew of Boot Hill, but I have PDFs of them and OD&D too. All the history remains quite interesting. My wife is a big Christmas fan so we do celebrate Ephinany and now eat Shrimp and Grits, Gumbo and all that jazz to Fat Tuesday! We go to JazzFest in NOLA most every year, I have a big Louis Armstong poster, or Beach Fest in Redondo. Listen to the music, enjoy your cocktail, and keep on with the journey! Cheers!
Thank you so much. I appreciate you sharing all this. Years ago I began planning a big Fat Tuesday feast myself and it's been a lot of fun. I make Shrove Tuesday pancakes for breakfast and then jambalaya or gumbo for dinner along with a cajun-spiced homemade crabcake and usually a Sazerac or other appropriate beverage. I've only been to JazzFest in New Orleans once back in 2012 I think. Great time! Got to see Pharaoh Sanders and Chick Corea as well as Bruce Springsteen and some other non-jazz artists. We keep our Christmas decorations up until Epiphany but then it typically takes us a few days or even up to a week to put everything away (we have a lot). I had really been looking forward to sharing all my Christmas albums during the bonus content in December but I'll just have to save that for next Christmas. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
My condolences for your loss. From my own experience, I know that sometimes elderly loved ones keep to themselves just how sick they are because they are motivated by love and want to spare family _present_ difficulty.
This was really great. I totally forgot about the max levels, but now remember that from when I first started in 1982! Very sorry to hear about your father… my condolences.
@brooksrownd2275 I'm so very glad you enjoyed it. It sounds like you might find interest in my History of D&D playlist. Lots of great info like this. Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I also started in 1981 with Moldvay Basic.
A history of the Balor demon would be very interesting. I mean it's obviously a version of the Balrog from LOTR, but the fact that it's a very old depiction with wings has always interested me. There's been a bit of an online debate around Balrog wings over the years and seeing the Balor makes me wonder about the earliest depictions of Balrogs and when the wings showed up in art.
Congrats to all winners! Specially to international winner. I really appreciate how Daddy made a special category for us, really mindful About the video, today I learned how Gygax made a lot up along the way. Makes me feel better about still not knowing how to do spellcasting in my homebrew ttrpg lol
It seems the first version of the subdual rules involve a morale check to see if the dragon stop fighting. Interesting, different then the sap or sleep spell rules. EDIT: It kind of implies that there could be an exhaustion stat which is equal to the number of hp you have.
I appreciate when things are ready out because I listen on my phone. Even if I looked at my phone, I doubt I could read anything anyway. One request: could you also use names for different books rather than saying "this one versus this one". Shorthand is fine, like Holmes, Original. It's not essential but it does help.
On the home front... My commiserations. It's hard. I lost my mother in 2024 and my dad a decade ago. Neither was expected although both were elderly. You can't ever be really ready for that. Best wishes for a 2025 with less emotional trauma. Good video btw, I enjoyed it.
On the subject of videos posting and YT algorithms - I don't think everyone fully understands how it works. I don't claim to either, but I observe it's not just posting frequent videos. For example, I am subbed to this channel and Prof. Dungeon Masters, who puts out videos far more frequently. YT always puts videos from this channel at the top of my recommends, and if I don't watch them immediately they still stick around. Meanwhile, I only occasionally get recommends of Prof. DM's videos. So clearly there is something else going on. My guess is that there is a factor in the algorithm based on the percentage of total minutes or total videos that I've watched, which implies that infrequent but good content can still work. Obviously I don't have any facts, just observations. I do construct algorithms for my day job, although not for Google. I definitely believe it's not as straightforward as what YT even tells people. They are just giving their preferred method of boosting videos, not the only way.
So sorry for this loss for you and your family. I love your Dad's character sheet. The continous fed paper looks pre-Applewriter, was your Dad a programmer?
Ha - nice catch. No, he was an "Industrial Lubrication Engineer" which is a fancy title for a technical sales support role. He consulted on large scale contracts for Union Oil / Unocal in which they would acquire a client such as a large steel mill or such and sell them industrial grade grease to keep their machinery running. My dad would then come in and review the site, figure out what size ball bearings or what not that they had, and then figure out what viscosity of grease they needed to ensure the machinery runs smoothly. Some of his more fun projects were consulting on attractions/rides at Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and Universal Studios. I recall very specifically that he consulted on the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland. Anyway, he brought back a ton of that printer paper for the dot matrix printer in the office, as I think they had upgraded their printers and didn't need that paper any longer. I just cut it down to size to fit into my folder but it was much bigger.
Oh, totally. There are a lot of things like that in early 1E in which Gary assumed that people would just be able to figure out how to generate the number spread rather than spelling it out for them. While it's annoying, I can say it helped me improve my ability to notice patterns and such. The same with his choice of throwing in archaic words to his writing - it forced me to look things up, which really did help me later in life.
Running Isle of Dread 5e Goodman Games reprint and the Rakasta are like proto Rakshasa and the Kopru are like proto mindflayers/aboleth. I plan on using these weird 'evolutionary' connections to enhance the lore of the island.
I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my grandfather on Dec 29, also in his 80s.
Thank you for the video. Grandpa's funeral was yesterday and this made my first day back at work a little easier.
My dad passed away on Christmas Day of 2023, so now it's been just over a year... definitely puts a damper on the holidays...

I had that monster manual in the late 80s. Sadly it went away in the late 90s when i had the 2nd Edition version and didn't think i needed it anymore.
That 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual is probably my favorite D&D Monster book, mainly because of the art by Tony DiTerlizzi.
Thank you for the great video. I am sorry to hear about your dad and I hope the new year brings you better days and good fortune.

@daves6220 I was thinking about giving OSRIC a try because people say it's organization and usability is superior. I don't play D&D in ages, I play more rules light games those days, so an easy to use version of the rules would be very important for me.
@daves6220 also it's free, the inflation and the dollar value in my country make a free version much easier to try out.
This was such a sweet video in all accounts thanks for all your work you put into theses videos
My condolences to you and your family.
I'm sorry for your loss.
I am very sorry to of your loss. Please accept my prayers for you and your family.
If your stovetop is working but the oven isn't, it may be a board relay that burned out. You can get a replacement for approx $20 bucks and you just need to do a bit of basic soldering to swap it out. That happened to me a few months ago.
So good, as always. You set a standard for scholarship in this area, and you make it so interesting and engaging. Thank you.
I truly appreciate you saying that. Thank you so much!
Condolences 🫂
What a great final gift! You get to think of him and the last memories with every spin
My condolences, it is great to have you back!
Thank you for telling us about your Dad.
My condolences for your loss. From my own experience, I know that sometimes elderly loved ones keep to themselves just how sick they are because they are motivated by love and want to spare family _present_ difficulty.
Ngl my fav old school dnd/rpg history channel. Cheers :]
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I wish I had something more profound, but there are no words.
Very sorry to hear about your loss.
This was really great. I totally forgot about the max levels, but now remember that from when I first started in 1982!
Very sorry to hear about your father… my condolences.
Thank you very much. I really appreciate your watching and commenting, and also for your support of the channel by subscribing. Cheers.
I'm so sorry about your dad man.
First time I've seen the development broken down like this for the material that came before I started in 1981. Very interesting.
Thanks so much for the suggestion. I will add it to my list of potential future topics. And, thank you very much for watching and commenting.
I had those same Japanese toys when I was kid in the 80s. Long ago since they've been lost, I wish I still had them!
I love that old 1e troll artwork, with the sunken eyes and the Kramer like hair.
Yeah, it's really fun.
Im sorry for your loss
So sorry for your loss!
Congrats to all winners! Specially to international winner. I really appreciate how Daddy made a special category for us, really mindful
About the video, today I learned how Gygax made a lot up along the way. Makes me feel better about still not knowing how to do spellcasting in my homebrew ttrpg lol
I need this done in 12 videos. Perhaps more. One for each plane of existenz
It seems the first version of the subdual rules involve a morale check to see if the dragon stop fighting. Interesting, different then the sap or sleep spell rules. EDIT: It kind of implies that there could be an exhaustion stat which is equal to the number of hp you have.
My sincere condolences to you and your family on your loss.
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
Welcome back. So sorry for your loss.
Thank you very much.
Glad to see you back!
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it, and I hope you enjoy the video.
"Percent chance in lair 60%" dude same 😂
Sorry for your loss my friend.
I truly appreciate this. Thank you so much.
Go no script team! ❤
Very sorry for your loss. ❤
Thank you very much.
Sorry for your loss
No Norms here they hang out at Cheer's. Any thoughts on a Norm creature. Sluggish, thirsty and hairy. But watch out for their mate
it's funny how the vampire's damage in MM 1e was listed as 5-10 (you do the math), instead of (1d6) + 4.
@@daddyrolleda1 absolutely. At 15 years old we could nearly instantly generate any range
Sorry for your loss. Thanks for all you do for the D&D community. Beat wishes for 2025 ❤
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
Running Isle of Dread 5e Goodman Games reprint and the Rakasta are like proto Rakshasa and the Kopru are like proto mindflayers/aboleth. I plan on using these weird 'evolutionary' connections to enhance the lore of the island.
Condolences.
Thanks
Thank you so much for this very generous act of kindness. It means a lot, especially right now. Thanks again.
