Wow the idea that the tyranical governor or whatever steals everyones metal then pulgasari eats metal to live and the people then give pulgasari their metal because they feel obligated to do so since he killed the governor is actually a really fuckin cool idea and ripe for potential social commentary.
07:28 You have to remember that it was her that gave Pulgasari life via her blood. She's connected to her like the Cyborg from the Second Mechagodzilla movie was connected to Mechagodzilla. In fact, she used her blood to bring him back to life earlier in the film. Therefore, through this connection, Pulgasari doomed himself when he ended the life for one of his creators. The one that gave him the spark of life to begin with. And, in his passing, that life essence/force rejoined with the woman that had given it to him to start with.
So, he claims that he's descended from unicorns huh? Funny a crazy homeless guy at the Subway said the same exact thing to me a few weeks ago. Plus he also did claim that the kaiju were coming to destroy us all and eat everything we own. Hmm... Maybe he actually watched this film before.
I saw this movie years ago and I did like it. but I never knew about the history behind it until now and I got to say you're right those two people must be the bravest I've ever heard of to defy a murderous dictator who did all those things and to get away with it just hot damn. semi should make a movie of what they did I'm it's inspiring story. I also forgot the name of this monster since it's been a year since I've seen them but I thank you for making this video on him. I had plans to include this Kaiju in my fanfiction stories but I don't know how it would work considering the fact that in my Godzilla fanfiction stories it's going to be a monster bass Universe no humans no machines just monsters. so I have no clue how he would work but I might figure something out. I would also really like it if they went ahead and made a s h MonsterArts version of this guy I would even like it if revoltech got a hold of the right to making this monster. I know it's Korean everything and vast majority of people don't like Korea well North Korea but I have no problem with them race and culture doesn't matter to me humans are humans that's all I see. nevertheless I would love to see an articulated figure this guy and I would love to add him to my collection. and if my dog would get off my stage I can make a small video about my small monster collection. Hahahaha. have a wonderful day Omni viewer!
I know of one potential way you could have Pulgasari work in your human-less fanfiction. Pulgasari is based on a mythical metal-eating spirit called bulgasari, so if you change the origin from "statue made of rice" to "folklore spirit", that could do the trick. You have a wonderful day as well.
Omni Viewer 🌟 you're right that would work! I will take a month or so to think about something like that thank you very much! in my humilis fanfiction story's titled Legendary Journeys. Godzilla was meant to be a symbol of Hope after years of war and lost but due to his family and almost his entire race being obliterated due to a new war with Orochi he becomes a vessel of Vengeance and destruction and causes Carnage like no other against the world for the pain they caused him. as years go on Godzilla becomes known as the king of monsters and the king of dread. and many many monsters tries to find many ways to kill him but due to Godzilla's years on years of experience in battle he's practically unkillable. but that won't stop anyone from trying. And with Pulgasari's metallic armor body he could be just a turning tide that they would need to stand against the mighty king. and you're right Terry change the origin story I already have some ideas working in thanks to you. again thank you very much you've been more helpful to me than you possibly know! 😁
Man, I've really got to get around to watching this movie already... In fact, I'm going to see to that right now. Nice video, as usual, and have a nice day. :)
Well, I just finished watching it... And it was fun. Like you said, it's certainly not perfect or great, but watching it knowing its history made it an interesting experience. You also mentioned it before, but it really wasn't all that subtle in its subversive message; kind of surprises me they didn't catch on sooner. Or perhaps it was fortunate this was the last film the director made before he and his wife managed to GTFO. Besides that, it also had plenty of silly moments of the kind one would expect of this sort of movie. I laughed out loud at the parts were the rebels were throwing logs and rocks down the mountain at the army, since it reminded me of an old Japanese game show, MXC, that me and my family used to watch and found hilarious. And the ending was surprisingly/weirdly touching, too. In any case, thanks for giving me the final motive to finally see this; and as always, have a nice day. :)
I've never heard of this film (though I saw photographs of the actual monster featured in the movie), and it sounds really interesting. And here I thought the only Korean monster films were The Host, Yongarry and A*P*E. I'll have to check it out if I get the chance. And the whole idea behind the subtext of the film is a perfect example of how kaiju movies can be deeper than just a guy in a monster suit breaking things. Speaking of things I hadn't heard of, I finally got my hands on 'After King Kong Fell'! It was very intriguing and thought-provoking. I don't think I would've ever heard of it if it hadn't it been for you and your great video you made dedicated to the story. Thank you, brother :')
You're quite welcome. Shining light on little-known works is just another thing I enjoy about making videos. A*P*E*...oh, that sucker is long overdue for a reckoning.
Not in any conversation about this film I've seen is the fact that Bagan in both major ideas for him take a lot of traits from Pulgasari, Super Godzilla has many design elements, The Mothra one was going to be an ancient monster from China (iirc) keep in mind that Bagan was going to be a clear bad guy and it does make some sence
I suppose that can be chalked up to 1) not many people having seen Pulgasari to begin with, and 2) the question of whether or not the resemblance between Pulgasari and Bagan are deliberate or coincidental.
A bit off topic but I'm curious, what are your Top 10 Godzilla movies? I assume G14 is on there because you said you it was your favorite movie of 2014
Can you do a atomic roast on the movie King Cobra you should see it you'll have fun with it PS are you pumped up to see the new Godzilla anime movie coming to you better do a review about it and you better show some clips too :-)
Really people hate this movie? I actually think Pulgasari is a pretty good. Not great but good. I'm surprised that someone like Shout factory or The Criterion Collection Inc haven't released the movie on home video. That way it could have both the movie and a documentary about the making of the movie. Also what is the deal with the dvd copy that you own?
Well, it's apparently MOD through Amazon, which has streams the movie through Prime. Since I like having physical copies of things, I got the DVD. Obviously, it's not stellar quality, likely taken from the out-of-print VHS, but it works. There are actually a lot of really obscure Kaiju/Tokusatsu DVDs being distributed this way, like The Space Giants or Agon: Atomic Dragon (reviews for both forthcoming).
I was wondering about that since I keep seeing that dvd on amazon. I hesitate buying at first since it looks like a bootleg. Thanks for the clarification. However like I said earlier don't you think that someone like Shout factory or The Criterion Collection Inc should release a up to date copy of the movie on home video?
I just found out that you could tweet and email Criterion at suggestions@criterion.com and CC Jon Mulvaney at mulvaney@criterion.com and tell them that this would be a perfect movie to add to their collection.
Nice. Omni (do u mind if i call u omni?) I imagine the cloverfield addendum video will be uploaded on January 18, 2018 the 10th anniversary of cloverfield.
I probably won't have the addendum up on the 18th, since I want to make darn sure I have all of my ducks in a row. It should still be up before the end of January, though.
Basically, it means I'm going to address certain other things which I either 1) had to exclude from the original for whatever reason, or 2) had brought to my attention after posting.
Now I wanna see Pulgasari in IDW Comics Godzilla series
Wow the idea that the tyranical governor or whatever steals everyones metal then pulgasari eats metal to live and the people then give pulgasari their metal because they feel obligated to do so since he killed the governor is actually a really fuckin cool idea and ripe for potential social commentary.

Fascinating
ngl the main theme and the title theme are pretty great

And that must have been what drove him nuts.
Would like to see Brandon Tenold review Pulgasari in the future.
Also, I think Galgameth is meant to be an intentional mockery of Pulgasari just to piss off Kim Jong-Il.
I've never heard of this before. Very interesting stuff! It's not often a kaiju movie's backstory is as intriguing as the movie itself!
I've seen this a few times, and every time I think the extras in were forced to do this at gun point.
Yeah, probably..
Most likely.
Hurray!!! you did a Pulgasari review!!! :D To be honest, I think Pulgasari is a really cool kaiju design!
Excellent Omniviewer...as usual my friend.
Haha well if you ever make a video on A*P*E, I'll be one of the first to watch it! :)
I was wondering when you would bring up Galgameth in connection with this. Good show.
Holy this movie looks awesome!

The plot itself reminds me of Daimajin.
Anyways, nice review! 👍🏻
Yeah, it does have more in common with Daimajin than Godzilla. In fact, Daimajin vs. Pulgasari is a fight I'd love to see.
Who do you think would win?
1:07
.....He actually said that?!
The unicorn thing? As far as I've seen, it is.
Omni Viewer
😐......People are frustrating sometimes.
Kim Jong Il is the first Otherkin
Here’s a crazy idea: what if this was the Showa Mechagodzillas tale of origin?
@Taylor Gordon l know right?
Wouldn’t you say that this movie is the Kaiju version of Virgil’s Aeneid in a way??
Fascinating indeed
Isn't it though?
A bit off topic but I'm curious, what are your Top 10 Godzilla movies? I assume G14 is on there because you said you it was your favorite movie of 2014
Horns don’t Always automatically Spell „Satan“ or „Lucifer“; they can be seen as genuine signs of power, not to mention, Dominance
As a hazbin hotel fan when I hear Lucifer all I can think of is the funny haha man that loves rubber ducks.
@@Rusty-2010 I Suppose That’s One Way Of Looking At It

nice mention of Galgameth, i thought it was forgotten.
I had actually seen Galgameth long before I saw Pulgasari, and since I have a steel trap memory, it's been in my brain for a while.
Really people hate this movie? I actually think Pulgasari is a pretty good. Not great but good. Ideally, this film would get a Criterion release. Why it hasn't, I have no idea, but it should get one.
I just found out that you could tweet and email Criterion at suggestions@criterion.com and CC Jon Mulvaney at mulvaney@criterion.com and tell them that this would be a perfect movie to add to their collection.

Omni Viewer what does addendum mean? I've seen it in the shin godzilla addendum and the monster planet godzilla addendum but what is it?
Basically, it means I'm going to address certain other things which I either 1) had to exclude from the original for whatever reason, or 2) had brought to my attention after posting.
Omni Viewer also godzilla monster planet has just came out on netflix
Please use more Sabaton music
Godzilla and sabaton... a dream come true
Either "Nuclear Attack"or "Firestorm" are BEGGING to have Godzilla music videos made of them.
Omni Viewer honestly it would amazing to have a kaiju power metal band
I've often had that thought myself. I'd start one myself if I knew any musicians.
What is the intro song
Carolus Rex by Sabaton.
Awesome intro song what's the name of it? Also awesome review of this obscure kajiu movie
The song is "Carolus Rex" by Sabaton, from the concept album of the same name.
Glad you enjoyed watching.
Omni Viewer thanks 😁 also do you do fan made monster story reviews too?
I haven't yet, though I'm not opposed to the idea.
Omni Viewer cool I'm looking forward to one when get to it keep up the awesome work on your reviews 👍
Am I the only one who also mold rice into small figures? No? Just me? Okay.
I was actually considering Doing that myself At some point, just to see what happens
Tomorrow... He's coming.
Going to check it out now.
Omni Viewer Judgement day.
😐 what????????
I taught kim jong un
In my opinion the movie could be better
Better is what Kim Jong-il wanted, though.
