It would be great if you could make 10-15 minute videos of some of the more tricky aspects of the language, such as this, especially the imperfect subjunctive. I’m sure there are other advanced aspects I don’t yet know about 😂. Keep up the good work.

I still hear your voice in my head saying, “that which” every time I encounter “lo que.” I find your videos to be so helpful, and so clear. Thank you for continuing to make them.
Fluency is a hard thing to gauge because it can depend on the topic you are talking about. I would say that I was able to communicate effectively and keep up with conversations in real-time at around the four year mark. After that, I just got progressively better and better. Learning a language is like a race with a finish line.

I love to learn Spanish, I've been learning, studying Spanish for many years. I brought my first Spanish book many years ago (1970?)"Teach yourself Spanish". Like you say, impossible to learn without the Subjunctive, the said book only refers to the Subjunctive half way through the book?Probably at my advanced age I'll be dead before I'm dead fluent 🙂. Unfortunately I live on an "urbanization"where there are probably more Britt's than Spanish.Nevertheless thanks for the lessons, can't get enough of them.Thanks once again 🙂👍

I have only just discovered your videos as an upper intermediate level(self-taught) they have been just what I need to correct some of the many mistakes I make. As a retired teacher I have to complement you on your ability to make difficult concepts so clear, you have real talent. Keep it up.
There is a creative way to avoid the subjunctive in that sentence about saving money for vacations. You can say "ahorro dinero para poder ir de vacaciones con mi mujer dos veces al año". In the sentence about the chicken, you could have also said "saca el pollo del congelador para descongelarlo" ;)
Great video my friend! I agree with you when you say: " You can't avoid the subjunctive for ever". Unfortunately for English speakers, I don't think we have a subjunctive form of the verb the way they do in French and Spanish. Therefore we generally have problems with the subjunctive when speaking Spanish.

Your videos are super useful. I have no idea how I managed to learn English considering how different these constructions are in English. I’m intermediate Korean and I’m trying to understand tense, aspect and mood, and because I do this unconsciously both in English and Spanish, I’m going back to basics. Your explanation of how two clauses manage tenses so differently is spot on. It opened my eyes as to why I’m trying to force verb conjugations into clauses that have no tense whatsoever because my Spanish brain is trying to fill a “gap”. Your functional grammar approach of looking at clauses and how they interact with each other is the best method, we don’t speak in simple words or phrases, all we do is create thoughts by linking clauses.

Muy bien hecho. I’ve been speaking (and living most of my life in) Spanish for 40 years. I learned as a young adult surrounded by Spanish-speakers, with a dictionary in one hand, 1001 Spanish Verbs in the other. Essentially I learned like kids do, by hearing, speaking and self-correcting. I always tried to get others (including my husband) to correct me, but Latin American courtesy makes it really hard for most people to do so. My 2 stepsons (and now my daughter-in-law) are the only ones who really took me at my word, and they helped me immensely with that bugaboo subjunctive. Funnily enough the imperfect subjunctive was more intuitive than present subjunctive. Your style of teaching would have been very helpful 40 years ago! On a side note, I find when I’m very, very tired and speaking my native English (or trying to), I randomly stick Spanish words into my English sentences, especially conjunctions (y, o, a, por/para). Weird.
It sounds like you have a lot of helpful folks around you to help you fine tune your Spanish. With your experience with the language, I doubt you are getting much out of my videos, but I do appreciate you taking the time to watch them. :)
@@QrooSpanish Yeah, I’m just a bit of a language nerd (especially Spanish), so it’s fun to watch how others approach the teaching. I like that you make your lessons accessible, but don’t shy away from more complex sentence structure and grammar. I am fully bilingual, including the cultural aspect from a Latin American perspective, especially Mexico, Central America and Colombia. I think when I travel to Spain at some point in the future, I may be a bit lost with some of the differences in word usage, and I’ve never chosen to learn the “vosotros” conjugations. I can understand them, but have never used this form in normal speech (only if reading out loud from the Reina Valera Bible 😄). I think, dream and talk to myself in both languages. The most fun is talking to another fully bilingual person and we can just fluidly switch languages depending on which language is best for what we want to express. Because some things just don’t translate that well. I don’t know how much Spanish language music you listen to, but I find there are often songs which are so wonderful in Spanish, but definitely a lot is lost in translation. Juan Luis Guerra and Ricardo Arjona are two singer-songwriters who are favourites, but I always feel the translation is lacking because of the poetic and metaphorical nature of their lyrics.
That's very interesting. I can relate to what you are saying about switching back and forth between the two languages when speaking to bilingual people. Some things are often better explained in one language over another. My wife and I speak like that with each other. Sometimes I will just pop a random Spanish word in my English when I don't have a good English equivalent. An example would be tramitar. You asked about Spanish music. I do listen to quite a bit of it. I agree that they are not the same when translated. :)
Being a careful speaker of British English, for the "purpose" use of "so", I always use "so that", which I believe is typical in British English e.g. I'm moonlighting in a restaurant so THAT I can afford to buy a car. It might help some people to recognise the difference - if you can put "that" after "so", it's the purpose use.
I appreciate the practical patterns. Currently low-ish intermediate and working my way to upper intermediate over several months, and your approach has a natural feel to it.

I identified the importance of the subjunctive in Spanish yet cannot understand why books and native teachers avoid it so much . Your confirmation that it is one of three most important verb ( mood ) forms is music to my ears ! I particularly like your explanations as to ' how ' why ' and 'when ' in your teachings . I write as a retired teacher who now teaches English to native Spanish and Italian speakers .... So here's to binge-watching your set of videos and looking forward to future ones . Amazing to see that I actually got a lot of these sample sentences correct, especially the subjunctive ones. Been learning subjunctive for the past 6 weeks and it’s a tough concept to grasp initially. Practice practice and more practice. Thanks for the video though it still helped clear some things over that confused me a bit.

Nicely done. I liked the way you broke down the sentences and also gave some options when possible. I think you could have explained the reason the subjunctive is needed.
A useful, if partial, explanation of some uses of the subjunctive. I'd like to have a better idea of the reasoning why an imperfect tense -seemingly implying past action- is used in Spanish where in English a conditional construction -seemingly implying a future action- would be used.
It really comes down to the extensive use of the subjunctive in Spanish. There are certain constructions which will trigger the subjunctive in Spanish or the sentence will not be correct. In English, the subjunctive mood is not very important at all, and it is not used in all of the circumstances requiring the subjunctive in Spanish. In Spanish, the conditional is commonly used to in the past to imply a future action; however, the exception is in circumstances requiring that subjunctive. Examples Juan me dijo que llegaría tarde. Juan told me he would arrive late. Both languages use the conditional here. Only because there is nothing to trigger the subjunctive. PARA QUE always triggers the subjunctive in Spanish. There are no exceptions. I brought my wife a bouquet of roses so she would know that I loved her. Le traje a mi mujer un ramo de rosas para que supiera que la quería.

Thanks! To answer your question, bastante can be used in a similar way but it can also have another meaning. For example, in much of Latin America "bastante" is often used to mean "too much" demasiado. Hay mucha gente en el parque. Si bastante. To make it clearer that it is being used like lo suficientemente, you will add a lo - lo bastante. Here's why: La casa es bastante grande. - The house is quite large. La casa es lo bastante grande. The house is big enough (for whatever you were discussing). La casa es lo bastante grande para nuestra familia.

Your videos are super useful. I have no idea how I managed to learn English considering how different these constructions are in English. I’m intermediate Korean and I’m trying to understand tense, aspect and mood, and because I do this unconsciously both in English and Spanish, I’m going back to basics. Your explanation of how two clauses manage tenses so differently is spot on. It opened my eyes as to why I’m trying to force verb conjugations into clauses that have no tense whatsoever because my Spanish brain is trying to fill a “gap”.
Your functional grammar approach of looking at clauses and how they interact with each other is the best method, we don’t speak in simple words or phrases, all we do is create thoughts by linking clauses.

Muy bien hecho. I’ve been speaking (and living most of my life in) Spanish for 40 years. I learned as a young adult surrounded by Spanish-speakers, with a dictionary in one hand, 1001 Spanish Verbs in the other. Essentially I learned like kids do, by hearing, speaking and self-correcting. I always tried to get others (including my husband) to correct me, but Latin American courtesy makes it really hard for most people to do so. My 2 stepsons (and now my daughter-in-law) are the only ones who really took me at my word, and they helped me immensely with that bugaboo subjunctive. Funnily enough the imperfect subjunctive was more intuitive than present subjunctive. Your style of teaching would have been very helpful 40 years ago! On a side note, I find when I’m very, very tired and speaking my native English (or trying to), I randomly stick Spanish words into my English sentences, especially conjunctions (y, o, a, por/para). Weird.
It sounds like you have a lot of helpful folks around you to help you fine tune your Spanish. With your experience with the language, I doubt you are getting much out of my videos, but I do appreciate you taking the time to watch them. :)
@@QrooSpanish Yeah, I’m just a bit of a language nerd (especially Spanish), so it’s fun to watch how others approach the teaching. I like that you make your lessons accessible, but don’t shy away from more complex sentence structure and grammar. I am fully bilingual, including the cultural aspect from a Latin American perspective, especially Mexico, Central America and Colombia. I think when I travel to Spain at some point in the future, I may be a bit lost with some of the differences in word usage, and I’ve never chosen to learn the “vosotros” conjugations. I can understand them, but have never used this form in normal speech (only if reading out loud from the Reina Valera Bible 😄). I think, dream and talk to myself in both languages. The most fun is talking to another fully bilingual person and we can just fluidly switch languages depending on which language is best for what we want to express. Because some things just don’t translate that well. I don’t know how much Spanish language music you listen to, but I find there are often songs which are so wonderful in Spanish, but definitely a lot is lost in translation. Juan Luis Guerra and Ricardo Arjona are two singer-songwriters who are favourites, but I always feel the translation is lacking because of the poetic and metaphorical nature of their lyrics.
That's very interesting. I can relate to what you are saying about switching back and forth between the two languages when speaking to bilingual people. Some things are often better explained in one language over another. My wife and I speak like that with each other. Sometimes I will just pop a random Spanish word in my English when I don't have a good English equivalent. An example would be tramitar.
You asked about Spanish music. I do listen to quite a bit of it. I agree that they are not the same when translated. :)

Being a careful speaker of British English, for the "purpose" use of "so", I always use "so that", which I believe is typical in British English e.g. I'm moonlighting in a restaurant so THAT I can afford to buy a car. It might help some people to recognise the difference - if you can put "that" after "so", it's the purpose use.

In older English, a common form was: "I quit my job for to pass more time with my family." So that's similar.

I identified the importance of the subjunctive in Spanish yet cannot understand why books and native teachers avoid it so much . Amazing to see that I actually got a lot of these sample sentences correct, especially the subjunctive ones. Been learning subjunctive for the past 6 weeks and it’s a tough concept to grasp initially. Practice practice and more practice. Nicely done. I liked the way you broke down the sentences and also gave some options when possible. I think you could have explained the reason the subjunctive is needed.
The reason is simply the construction dictates it. PARA QUE will always be followed by the subjunctive.

A useful, if partial, explanation of some uses of the subjunctive. I'd like to have a better idea of the reasoning why an imperfect tense -seemingly implying past action- is used in Spanish where in English a conditional construction -seemingly implying a future action- would be used.
It really comes down to the extensive use of the subjunctive in Spanish. There are certain constructions which will trigger the subjunctive in Spanish or the sentence will not be correct. In English, the subjunctive mood is not very important at all, and it is not used in all of the circumstances requiring the subjunctive in Spanish.
In Spanish, the conditional is commonly used to in the past to imply a future action; however, the exception is in circumstances requiring that subjunctive.
Examples
Juan me dijo que llegaría tarde. Juan told me he would arrive late.
Both languages use the conditional here. Only because there is nothing to trigger the subjunctive.
PARA QUE always triggers the subjunctive in Spanish. There are no exceptions.
I brought my wife a bouquet of roses so she would know that I loved her.
Le traje a mi mujer un ramo de rosas para que supiera que la quería.

Thanks! To answer your question, bastante can be used in a similar way but it can also have another meaning.
For example, in much of Latin America "bastante" is often used to mean "too much" demasiado. Hay mucha gente en el parque. Si bastante.
To make it clearer that it is being used like lo suficientemente, you will add a lo - lo bastante. Here's why:
La casa es bastante grande. - The house is quite large.
La casa es lo bastante grande. The house is big enough (for whatever you were discussing). La casa es lo bastante grande para nuestra familia.
