i always wondered when "time immemorial" was. Now I know it's between 1982 to 1991 :-) seriously sepaking though, Justify my love video saved me from my own self-hatred and made me realise that I need no fixing, despite what others thought of what and who I was. As a teenager, that video and Madonna's strong defence of LGBTQ sensibilities saved my life.

Madonna molded the popstar. This is why pop stars these days are able to be sexual without the controversy. Also this is why she is imitated by so many younger artists because she paved the way. @Markyajv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@valyusha98 There were major issues with that song behind the scenes.
1-The song was based on a letter Chavez had written for Kravitz
As Chavez recalled to Vibe in 2013, the creation of the song was surprisingly simple. “Andre [Betts] got a beat going, Lenny recorded a synth line, and then he asked me if I had something I wanted to say. I had a letter on me (my letters are like poems), and so I got on the mic and basically read the letter. One take and the rest is history,” Chavez said.
      2. Chavez also sued Kravitz over the song
Chavez sued on grounds that she’d been denied a songwriting credit for “Justify My Love.” On Jan. 29, 1992, Chavez and Kravitz settled out of court. Payment details weren’t disclosed, but Chavez did eventually get an official credit and a chunk of those royalties.

  • @JamesCimino

Guys, great reaction. About Justify My Love, it was banned from MTV, so Madonna released in VHS and it is still today the top selling VHS of all time. The song was written by Lenny Kravitz, who is the voice moaning as a backing vocal. Also Justify My Love not only played on the radio as reached the top of the Billboard hot 100 charts. The video is also a hint for her most sexually provocative fase the comes right after this song, the Erotica album. She was the first artist to publicly to perform as a woman in control of her sexuality and her desires and suffered a huge backlash from the puritans and the religious. But all you see today in terms of women being sexy and empowered in pop music started with this video. That’s why is a classic and so iconic.
Also you missed at the a quote from this song that also became iconic: “Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another.”

This music/video had a huge impact back then and paved the way for Madonna's "Erotica" album and her "Sex" book. And since people were super conservative at the time, Madonna received a lot of hate for both the album and the book. But the Erotica album was critically aclaimed and explores not only sex per se, but also so many taboos and relevant themes like Madonna losing many of her friends to aids. And the Sex book became one of the most successful photobooks ever, and after all the hate it started to be seen as post-feminist art and an object of modern culture. 90's Madonna was really ahead of her time, her albums that decade (Erotica, Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light) were like no others.

I am always intrigued by how younger generations react to Madonna's videos from back in the day. Her videos are 'too much' even for a generation that grew up in a time where sexualised images, videos or porn are a click away. You would think that they would just say "whatever" and eye roll but they actually get shocked LOL. Imagine how we felt watching Justify my Love or Erotica in the early '90s, when internet did not exist and the TV was our only window to the world.
I also noticed how kids nowadays are not used to metabolise the images and videos they see, unless straight forward. If there's anything remotely artistic or not following a defined path they frown and have a confused look, as all they are used to is the basic unsophisticatedness of the contemporary music scene.

Great reaction to this video and yes, it was the number one song when it came out and played all over the radio! I remember it well and of course, MTV decided to not play it and it was a huge controversy with Madonna making a single that you could buy in the stores and it's sold out everywhere! She always ends up on top with everything she does, but the video was groundbreaking in that they presented a female point of view with regards to sexuality as well as lgbtq themes throughout the video which were not accepted on MTV at that time some Madonna wanted to break those barriers. If you want to hear more of this type of music from Madonna, you should definitely listen to the erotica album. Ground breaking and experimental with a lot of the spoken singing style. So glad you loved it and yeah, you have to be careful with these platforms but we love you for doing these reactions! Big hugs!

Madonna is a much deeper and artistic singer than she is given credit for, but the younger generation is finally beginning to credit her for the way she paved the path for many artists today. Many of her songs also include subtle and sometimes blatant stances on political, religious, cultural, and human rights issues. This you will probably see expressed more in her live performances.

I remember going to the Sam Goody and seeing a whole wall full of the VHS tape single .. such a brilliant marketing strategy, having the video being to explicit for MTV and forcing everyone to buy it.
    (life before the internet).
The cover art is also iconic btw.

I’m really curious about your ages. I’m thinking you’re still in your teens, please correct me if I’m wrong. No offence intended.
You refer to the background music as ominous but what it is, is sexual. The rhythm is sexual, the lyrics are sexual the imagery is sexual. There’s nothing ominous about sex; the song is meant to titillate and arouse, not frighten.
Madonna is known for covert but mostly overt sexuality in her music. This album, “The Immaculate Collection” was released in 1990. Two years later Madonna released a book of photos called “SEX”. It includes nudes of her, and others, engaging in sexual activities. It was a best seller and I’ve seen it on eBay selling for upwards of $650. I own a copy myself.
THIS is Madonna - a woman who defied convention, broke the rules and broke through the boundaries that polite society had placed on women’s sexuality. THAT is what made her an icon. No one could stop her from expressing herself musically or otherwise, no one dared try. You are seeing a fiercely strong woman take on the world - and win. Enjoy!!

@@Electricrebel001 I’m chocking it up to youth and inexperience in this case. I was in my mid-20s when Madonna hit the scene. There was no doubt, in my generation’s mind, what Madonna was all about from the get-go. LOL

They also described parts of this song as "seductive", "artistic", "self expression", "sexual" and "kink". That the background music and vocals "could sound confusing" as well as "ominous".
Being that they're so young, and clearly not Madonna's general fanbase, they really seemed to have a great sense of what this song and video made them feel, even commenting that there is "probably a deeper meaning".
Art is subjective and we can all see and feel differently about someone's art. This music, in my opinion, can have an ominous effect. It's about context and the viewers feelings. To younger people without much sexual experience or who may not be exposed to people of different proclivities, backgrounds or fetishes, this video might be a little scary.
Consider 'The Beast Within' remix. Madonna reading from the book of Revelations over this track is absolutely ominous. The scripture speaks of the beast coming with ten horns, and seven heads, etc., etc. If she'd read that same scripture over 'Express Yourself' or 'True Blue', it wouldn't have had the same, haunting effect. Even her performance of this song during 'The Girlie Show Tour' had additional music towards the end that evoked an ominous feeling for 'Madonna' the character as she walks away from the audience.
Part of Madonna's contribution to music and pop culture includes shocking the senses and evoking emotions and feelings from people, even ominous ones. Whatever it makes any of us feel, 'Justify My Love' along with the 'Erotica' album and SEX book, are pretty polarizing and I don't think Madonna would want it any other way.
P.S. I think it's pretty amazing these "kids" are finding out about Madonna and asking her "older" fans for help with songs to review. Cheers!

The video was banned on MTV and Madonna being the entrepreneur and business woman she is decided to release the first ever video single and it sold a million copies.

"Justify my love" was just a preview of what was coming with the "Erotica" album, the SEX book, the "Body of Evidence" movie and much more. All part of a sexual liberation - revolution - that Madonna had been promoting since the 80s. By the way, interesting reaction, you can't expect less with a video like this.

I remember when this video came out. It was banned in Canada and as a huge Madonna fan, back then already, I was pissed!! Anyway, my gf at the time, we were living together, went to visit her parents in Vancouver. One day she went on a road trip across the border to Seattle and bought me a copy, I still have it to as well as her Sex book and so much more. When my gf came back to town, i got home from work and the "Justify My Love" banned video was on the coffee table. I went nuts. She had smuggled a copy of it into Canada for me.

I can confirm that this was played on the radio in late 1990/1991. Sales drove this up the charts as well. Platinum single in the US. You should check out her follow up - Rescue Me. Or even Erotica. This was definitely her sex era.

this was all over the radio yes and this was what mtv was in the 80s and 90s it was a song about breaking taboos about things most people do behind doors and bring it to the outside. and get people to talk about it and more open. it was definately risque but she was always a pusher of thought.
