    I understand why Aang would hide the information. He's already lost one family and he was afraid to lose another. I like how they handled it for one big reason. Aang didn't get caught with the map, he felt guilty for what he did and told the truth. He even accepted their decision to leave him which was the thing he was afraid of in the first place.

      you can feel the reality from ATLA. Most of the cast is young and you see them make some mistakes on the way and learn from them. Pain is the real teacher they say, so the mistakes.

    I think it's interesting Chris didn't like Aang's sudden shift in character which is true because he's usually very mature and considerate despite his playfulness. I watched Nostalgic Critic's review of this episode and he thought Aang was out of character too even though I think the writers wanted to show Aang's insecurities as someone who literally has no one other than Sokka and Katara. The possibility that his only friends would rather reunite and remain with their father rather than continue their quest with him isn't an unreasonable fear for a 12 year old kid even if he was raised by monks. This is the same kid that ran away from his monastery upon hearing he was to be sent off to spend the rest of his life training in preparation for war.

    • @GOffUnit
      @GOffUnit 7 ปีที่แล้ว +117

      I agree somewhat with both sides of this argument. I agree with those who liked the conflict in this episode in that Aang is young and he is human, so he will make mistakes and do things that make him unlikable sometimes. So I don't think it was a mistake to depict Aang betraying his only 2 friends, but I agree with this episode's critics that the way this was depicted was somewhat rushed and clumsily done.

    • @oddlygamers
      @oddlygamers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anng has to be mature quickly because of his role/position as the Avatar and the urgency of the situation calls for it. This is just my opinion though and I know I’m late to these videos no one is really gonna respond. 👍

    • @rubysilverstar7086
      @rubysilverstar7086 4 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      I thought the actions were completely in character for Aang. He's hurting and lonely. He's also twelve and twelve-year-olds aren't good decision-makers. Also, the fact that his friends have a home. If this war gets too much for them, they can go home. They'd be relatively safe. He doesn't have a home. He doesn't have that choice. He's the Avatar. He's supposed to always be an adult when he's not even a teenager yet. From the way he acted, I think he's grasping for some semblance of normal and trying to keep it that way. And since the Air Nomads don't appear to have the same structure of and importance of family as the Water Tribe, it wouldn't carry the same weight to him. Just my opinion and I haven't seen this episode in a while, but I remember thinking how it was as in character and understandable as it was a stupid decision.

    Actually Aang is more to be in his character than they disputed. remember how he ran away when his only friend, monk Gyatso will be separated from him, he tends to become impulsive when the issue is him being left alone by the persons he treasures the most. You might say that "hey, he should be a peaceful child" then he will be so bland as characters if the same thing will be said in his character. sometimes peaceful and kind person can also be emotional at their greatest insecurities, which is aang losing his another family he found after losing the most important person in him.

    • @SilverGallowglass
      @SilverGallowglass 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also, I wonder if the way the Air Nomads and the Water Tribes function is also supposed to be shown off. It is all over the episode from the animal skins, the food, but also in the values.
      In the Water Tribe the emphasis is on the tribe/community and for your family, while in the Air Nomads it is on freeing yourself from earthly ties and spirituality. A thing that is important in these differences is that Air Nomads don't seem to have traditional family units, Monk Gyatso isn't Aang's father, the monks raise the children collectively not parental units. The water tribe and us share the cultural shortcut of since it is about their father it might have "more importance" than their bond with Aang (which Aang understands and fears) and that also since it is about their father Aang hiding this information is a worse infraction than if he lied about something else important (which I'm not sure is something Aang completely gets). From the outside it looks like Aang trying to keep them for himself is worse because it is a platonic tie over a familial one, but to Aang it is two ties that for him carry equal weight.
      I'm not sure if I explained this well, this is from a conversation I had regarding this episode and so I might not have explained it as well while trying to sum it up in a short format. I'm also not saying Aang was in the right, he wasn't, he was being a reactive 12 year old with trauma. I just also think there was a cultural thing going on here too.

    Personally, I don't mind having Chris and others who've seen the show included in these reactions. In fact, I like hearing their insight and clearing up things that the rest have seen so far but might be confused about. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is stating an opinion about an episode before the others have seen it. I feel like it could possibly give everyone preconceived notions about what to expect or how they should feel about it before they've formed an opinion of their own.
    Still, glad to see you guys discuss and enjoy the show. :)

      @jonnemesis11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    • @raphaelr.1607
      @raphaelr.1607 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Exactly. Which is why those who have seen the show already shouldn't make comments about future episodes and save the discussion for episodes and events they've all seen. If they can stick to that, I see no problem.

    • @GOffUnit
      @GOffUnit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raphael R. I think it's fine for people who have seen the show before to comment on these videos as long as they don't spoil anything. Also, the Normies have apparently already started reacting to season two (they watch them faster than they upload them), so at this point the only way for their opinions on an episode to be influenced by our comments is retroactively. And, lastly, when it comes to general fanfare about one episode, character, plot point, etc. or another, it gives them an idea of what fans were thinking when these episodes originally aired over ten years ago, which will also get them in on some of the jokes in the self-aware episode, "The Ember Island Players".
      And all that said, I completely agree with your first comment.

    I actually liked this episode because it kind of puts Aang in a new light. Before this episode he was either playful kid or all-powerful spirit, we never really saw his fundamental humanity before now. This episode shows that, yeah, he’s the avatar, and he’s really happy, but he’s also insecure and he has literally no one other than Sokka and Katara. Anyone in his place would feel kind of angry and scared if the only people who cared for them were thinking of leaving.

    Wow I didn’t know you knew that, it’s true it is how airbenders fight. They fight lightly and dodge more than attack, it’s based on real kungfu all these fight styles. This one is called Bagua which actually is based on an octagon. I learned a bit when I was little. It was best shown on the waterwell where they moved kind of in a circle. You move in 8 steps (octagon) and move around like that to dodge or eventually attack. In old China they have a temple where bagua was founded where there is a huge octagon a lot of people train(ed) there. But of course in a smaller (imaginated) octagon

    Well a main Reason why Aang was a "dick" or hid the note was because he didn't want to be alone again, imagine being a 12 year old with no family left on the planet and all you have is 2 friends to help you Learn the elements and SAVE THE WORLD, like that's his entire quest he has to do mostly on his own... anyway, plus he apologised and told the truth the next day, he knew he screwed up, and when they left he never forced them to stay and he never got at mad at them for leaving.

    I know I'm late to the party, but Aang is TWELVE YEARS OLD. I'm glad this show doesn't portray him as some perfect person who always has it figured out. Yes, he is the avatar, but he is a child who is still maturing. Here in the West, we are so used to protagonists and heroes being depicted as faultless with little or no fallibility. I'm glad we see Aang making a huge mistake. Even better, he showed remorse, came clean to his friends about what he had done, and sincerely apologized. That shows terrific character - and is great lesson for children and adults alike. Really great reactions.

    Glad you love Momo Rana! Was worried you didn't when for weeks you've been addicted to Appa on Snapchat, but I get it, he's like a pillow while Momo is more toy-ish.

      @runamohammad3507 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      nathanp2007 you got it all wrong. I LOVE MOMO. He reminds me of my cat Amira so much lol. I wanted to take him home to Chicago with me and Appa but Mr Suraj made me ( asked me lol ) if I wouldn't mind keeping Momo at the Normies headquarters for the Avatar reactions since we had another Appa. So don't you worry, I love my momo , sleep with him when I am in Indiana , and appreciate you for sending my very own Momo :)

      @nathanp2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Awww! That makes me feel a lot better about it. Evil Suraj is to blame (as usual). :P kidding.
      Yeah, what I first noticed when you saw Momo during the reactions was how you said he was so cute and that he reminds you of Amira, so i figured that was the right way to go. Glad you love him so much. Keep enjoying Avatar, it only gets better and better until your head explodes watching the finale.

    with aang's shift in character, i think it makes sense for him to have these kinds of insecurities i just don't think it was handled as well as it should've been--if aang's worries about being left behind were established in a few other episodes leading up to this one it would've been better but unfortunately that's not what happened

    • @noodledogs
      @noodledogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i disagree. i think Aang’s fear of loneliness has been built up pretty well before this episode. in the flashback in “The Storm”, once he learns he’s the avatar, Aang’s social circle drops drastically to the point where Monk Gyatso is the only friend he has. and then once the possibility that he might lose him too comes up, Aang panics and selfishly tries to abandon his avatar duties, running away from the temple entirely. then in the present day, when Aang learns abt the genocide of his people, he has a complete mental breakdown that triggers the avatar state.
      so it’s not that Aang was specifically afraid of being left behind, it’s that Aang has a fear of isolation/loneliness and we definitely see evidence of this in the episodes leading up this one.

    Ghahaha, your face Rana when you said 'I love her' to June. I had teh same reaction XD :P The shirshu is a very cool animal in this Avatar world, one of my favs. It is very creatively made and I can very well see such a creature having a life strategy like that with sense of small :3
    'He's going through some teenage emotions right now' Very well said. I'd say, Aang bad choice, why wuld you do that? That's mean and selfish! But I can understand why and also becaus ehe indeed is a (beginning) teenager and teenagers sometimes make stupid choices and mistakes. 'This is the worst thing to do when you turn 14' xD Yeah..
    Appa is angry there :P Protecting Aang like that. I also think he fought back to much more because that shirshu is a serious threat. It's big, fast and has paralyzing powers. Or maybe also just the instinctive disdain of being close to another big animal which is not part of his species or herd. I think all of it together. Not to mantion he got hit by a whip, that is a big no-no for him, he will not be disrespected like that!
    That was a great idea of Sokka. The shirshu sees through sense of smell. If you meddle with that, he ges bonkers, completely in a haze of confusion. Very realistic! :D

    I know this is old and don't expect much as far as replies to explain, but why did Chris say "everyone knows how everyone feels about this episode"? Like, I'm a lifelong fan of the show, have seen the whole series about fifty times and can quote it in its entirety from memory and I'm still confused what he's referring to. I've not heard a lot of people say enough negative things about this episode for it to be a "widely known" opinion. Am I just out of the loop or was that just Chris's personal opinion that he portrayed onto the whole fanbase?

    • @MrFredde9999
      @MrFredde9999 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a huge fan as well (15 times maybe xD) and I'm also confused. I don't really have a strong opinion of this episode at all, none but positive anyway. Thought it was a sad but good twist that Katara and Sokka decided to leave and then to change their minds. Its a good episode xDD

    • @MrFredde9999
      @MrFredde9999 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But Chris also said "The Storm" wasn't that good either and that is arguable one of the best if not the best episode of the entire series xD
