People often ask why the real Painted Lady never showed up to help, but I've always wondered if she was unable to travel to the physical world because of the lake being polluted. And by cleaning it, they re-established her connection to the moral world.

Considering the theme that spirits are tied to the 'life' or 'energy' of a location or object in the show, it is not a stretch to consider the health of the lake affecting the powers and thus material nature of the spirit of the lake.

I love that this episode proves once again that Katara doesn't care if they're fire nation villages, because at the end of the day, they are all humans and she is smart and compassionate enough to see that
Sokka proved the same on season 1. basically all the teams avatar feels like this to be honest
But what sokka said is also true realistically they can't keep helping sometimes or else they'd never learn to take care of themselves
And on a practical note: if all goes well the war will soon be over and these people will be friends again. Team Avatar should treat Fire Nation civilians like neighbors, based on their advanced knowledge.

Zukos arc was the best to me....It's a hit or miss with katara. Sometimes I'll love her then sometimes I'll think she's really freaking annoying
That's what I call character development. "The Puppet Master" episode made her stronger and wiser about her feelings and powers. I remember watching the episode when I was younger and I didn't realized how powerfull the storytelling was in it untill I saw the three seasons like two months ago and I was very, very impressed. Can't wait to see that reaction

+aeris44 Would Jet be considered a Katara episode, or more of a Sokka episode? Because if we count it as a Katara episode, then I would say that one. But if we don't, then there are no bad Katara episodes.
Katara is so underrated as a character - there's so much depth to her. Her arc is constantly overlooked and it makes me sad.
Jude Robinson I know! What I hate more is that people usually glorify Toph when she doesn't go through that many arcs.
As much as I enjoyed Toph, she really did not undergo that much development compared to the rest of Team Avatar. If you ask people why they like her, it's usually just because she's tough, badass, blunt etc. Katara being feminine and traditionally girly makes her more boring in the eyes of people, sadly enough.
It's funny because I disliked The Legend of Korra's portrayal of Katara but I loved how they treated Toph. They added a lot more complexity to her character, through her children and her appearances later on.
This, so much this (except disliking Korra's portrayal, I still liked her even though she didn't do a lot). Katara is easily my favorite character, but she goes practically unnoticed by everybody. You'll always hear:
1. Zuko is my favorite because of his character arc.
2. Aang is my favorite because I relate to him a lot and he's the main character.
3. Toph is my favorite because she's tough and badass.
4. Sokka is my favorite because he's so hilarious, but also a brilliant strategist.
5. Azula is my favorite because she's so cunning.
6. Iroh is my favorite because he's so wise and loving, the perfect role model for Zuko.
You never hear anyone say anything about Katara, which is upsetting. Because despite how well rounded and complex her character is, no one ever seems to mention it or point it out.
Katara is a well-written character. I'll give them that. She has a lot of depth and contradictions to her that I can respect. I do, however, not like her as a person. That's what it comes down to for me. Nothing against her character, but I wouldn't like her irl. I'd probably tolerate her, but she'd bother me. And it has nothing to do with her being feminine (ty lee is feminine and I love her). It probably has more to do with her being motherly, as in, the one in the right, even when she might not have the best solution. But again, she's a well written character, she really is and I appreciate that. Sadly, that won't be enough for me to like her as a person.
I never noticed Momo licking Appa`s purple tongue before. Can't believe this show still surprises me with its attention to detail and foreshadowing!!

This is why I fucking love Katara. In her nature she's a motherly person and cares so much about her friends and family, even strangers yet she's still able to be a complete badass and take down whatever enemy crossed her.
She's definitely the type of role model character I'd want my daughter to have

The Painted Lady's thank you to Katara at the end put me in my feels so hard. Only in the Avatar universe does it demonstrate that even the spirits can appreciate the help of humans when they are incapable of directly helping.

Honestly, I've been way more hype, show and reaction wise, for your Avatar stuff then Game Of Thrones this season.
I can't wait till you guys get to 'The Beach', one of my personal favorites.
The Beach is shit. It's just a cringe filled episode that is 100% filler, nothing happens in it.

This episode is actually an important part of Katara's character arc. When she says "I will never ever turn my back on people who need me". It reminded me of how she feels with her father, specifically how she felt when her father left them when she needed him. Caring is an important part of Katar's character and so this is like a combination of her innate personality and her refusing to make the same mistake her father (did in her eyes). I think this idea is backed up when Sokka says " You need me and I will never turn my back on you" which is him also refusing to make the same mistake as their father.
This comment has nothing to do with avatar, but I love how Rana didn't expose Nahid when he let out his fart. There's something beautiful about it XD
I think its a nice detail how when they're on the dock toph is holding on to sokka or sang to guide her since she's blind

I feel like the reason the real painted lady wasn’t around was because the river was polluted and it’s like her source of power, she can manifest now because the river is clean
I disagree with that guy who said Toph was like the second in command and really good at being mature and making great choices. Not only is that really ironic considering a certain episode in the book, but so far at this point, she is definitely not leader #2. If anything that goes to either Katara or Sokka. Sokka makes most of the plans, yet Katara is the one who keep everyone together and keeps their morales straight. Such as the desert episode, this episode, imprisoned, an episode coming up in book 3, and just how she always wants to help the helpless. Sorry, but so far Toph does not qualify as a "leader" of any kind. She's powerful yes, but nowhere near as mature as Katara or even Sokka.
Sometimes when put on the spot to speak you miss your target a little. So, yeah, i agree with ya, pretty much. But, he is definitely right about what a badass Toph is!

Great Barrier Reef is dying correct. The waters around the reef is getting too hot for them to survive. Also Great Barrier Reef is the reference to the Swamp episode. Just like the Swamp, Great Barrier is one big living organism.
The first nation the Fire Nation invaded was its own.
This episode and the last really showed how the Fire Nation’s war machine has changed and oppressed its own people and villages.

There's something Katara and Zuko have in common; they have alter egos. Zuko: Blue Spirit. Katara: Painted Lady.
I think the real Painted Lady was unable to show up until the river was cleaned up; it set her free.

And they have their colors switched, Zuko's mask is blue and Kataras face paint is red.
And they both freed a village from bullies. Both got unmasked but Zuko was alone and Katara had her brother to defend her.

Nahid takes all the teasing in such good stride, he seems like a really chill guy.
I like how they took down a whole war drill last season using just the power of Katara, Aang, and Toph, and yet there is doubt here that Katara and Aang can destroy one factory. (No shade; it made me laugh.)

Even korra (the main gotdamn character) wasn't developed, they pretty much handed everything to her, like airbending even tho she never developed spiritually, she just pulled it out her ass. Aang actually had to develop to get over hurdles like earth bending
Mysterious Creature any power she had was given to her... and even then she doesn't compare to aang who by the end of the series only had 2 elements master, cause everything was handed to her so she never had to get in touch with her spiritual side (which is why her avatar state was so trash) and why she was way less versatile with her bending... name me a time aang got whooped in his avatar state... She took more L's in the avatar state then aang did in his normal state, she's in NO way a more developed avatar that's just a ridiculous claim
@Amore Arusko What do you mean only Zuko and Azula were developed? Every single character in ATLA (except Firelord Ozai) was well developed. In TLOK the only developed characters were Korra and Tenzin. Bolin and Asami received little development and Mako received none at all lol
Korra was alright, but not as good as the original. If they took more time for character development and smoothing out plot progression it would have been really good.

The biggest thing about the first 3 episodes of this final season is that none of these or any of the rest of the season are filler.
Think about it, we know who the fire Lord is, when they have to invade, and that sozins comet is coming, but until season 3, we all thought that all fire Nation citizens hated everyone else, and wanted to be the only nation left alive, getting to see the kids and school from episode 2, then this little village in episode 3 gives us an insight into the real people that are a part of the fire nation, their not all evil, it's certain people that are loyal to the fire Lord that are, but there are good fire nation people.
So in my opinion, this first 3 episodes were a necessary part of the show, Aang and the crew learned so much about the fire nation, now we can begin focusing on the final stretch leading to the big battle against the fire lord himself, and oh man, both Katara's, Zuko's & Azula's arcs this season is some of the best that I've ever seen, such amazing writing for an amazing show! 🙂

What's with this term "filler episode" everybody is constantly overusing these days? With most shows, every episode deals with something, so you can't call episodes "filler". That's especially true with A:TLA, in which every episode has some important development going on. What even is a "filler episode", anyway? No episode or series in general NEEDS to exist in the first place, so technically every episode of every series ever can be considered filler.

Kallo Skull filler episodes are the episodes that don't focus on the main overall story for example the invasion only focuses on advancing the plot for the finale this episode is great but filler cuz it focuses on characters with a small side story
And if you'd only want to watch the 'bare essentials' of a series and not the stuff around it; that's still just stupid
ATLA is considered an epic. 3 books with no chapter fillers except the great divide. even the ember island players episode was crucial to the storyline, if it helps the series flow, adds insight to lore, story, or character development it isn't a filler.
I really only consider recap episodes as filler. Everything else is usually at least character or world development.

Great reaction guys! :) just in reply to the statement in your discussion of the Great Barrier Reef being completely destroyed it's actually not! However 97% of it has been affected by coral bleaching which in result has made the Reef very unhealthy as well as many other factors, some natural and some human caused. Just in case you wanted to know haha
