- Birds are such great visual accents for our journals. This is a really surprising way you can make one, using just one strip of paper and making a few easy snips with your scissors.

If you’re looking for more junk journal ponderings…. Last summer, I made a limited-series podcast about all my deep thoughts regarding junk journaling. It’s free on the Spotify app! Search for “Ordinary Paper” or link here:
podcasters.spo...
In the first episode, I mention that I was doing a podcast because I didn’t think I had enough ideas for a TH-cam channel. Things (happily) went a different way, so you can disregard that!
I can’t get enough of birds! Keep the ideas coming, as far as I am concerned!😊
You're so kind to say so. I do have some more easy bird projects in mind, but don't want people to get sick of them - but you've given me confidence to go ahead and do it!
Loop some thread or string around two fingers a number of times into a "whimsical nest" & attach to card background then nestle bird inside it! Lovely whimsical ideas...thank you Anne!
Great idea for a thread nest! Thank you so much!
A piece of jute would be perfect too!🙂
I went crazy doing the whimsical birds and now another bird to play with. TFS…❤
Haha. I know right…me too !! 🤍🤍🤍🤍
Yes, it's been a big bird theme so far this month! Thanks for watching!
What a great idea for any crafting project...Will look cute in a journal too...thankyou 😊
LOVE LOVE LOVE THESE LITTLE CUTIES ‼️‼️‼️
Thanks, Nancy! There's something rather serene about them, isn't there? I appreciate your watching!
It would make a beautiful greeting card.
It would, indeed! I may be doing some of those next!
Can’t wait to try this! Thank you…I have a thing for birds 🐦
Have fun!
On the pink/blue/yellow background with the leaves, I totally think about the dove bringing back the branch to Noah on the ark!!🥰 It looks like the water and sunrise/sunset! I want to try making a bluejay and a cardinal by changing the angle of the top and back of the head.😊
I thought of that, too - a new day of hope dawning! GREAT idea to make a crest and get those other beloved birds into our journals.
Girl! This would be great for the #scrappy8challenge for march-collaged animal!
Excited to try this.
Thank you! I don't know about that challenge - thanks for the hashtag, I'll look it up!
This is the best idea and so cute. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome! So glad you enjoyed it!
That dove with the twig is like the dove that went out from Noahs Ark.
That’s what I was thinking - a sign of hope and peace.
He's beautiful. Can't wait to try it out.
He's pretty easy to do and so much fun!
These birdies are so cute and mine actually turned out. 😁
Oh, my golly, you've made some already?! I'm totally impressed - you definitely win the prize for Fastest Crafter of the Day! Thank you so much for watching!
Brylcreem or something like that. A little dab will do ya. 🤣🤍and when your dryer went off….I heard the old spice jingle lol.
Old Spice with the whistling? Yes, I can now hear that jingle, too! haha!
I love this idea, and your teaching and demonstration skills are excellent! Such cute birds for cards, bookmarks, and my favorite art method-collage. I wonder if gelli painted rice paper would work, and I plan to try that. Could you tell me how wide the strips are? You said about 10” long, but I didn’t catch the width. Thank you so much. I’m happy I found you!
Thank you, Cathy! Those strips, I believe, were about 3/4" wide. I tried some a full inch in width, but they were a little cumbersome. The 3/4" strips were easy to work with but still gave a nice-sized bird for all the purposes you mentioned. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Anne. This is very helpful! I can’t wait to try it.
I’m making the whimsical birds right now 😊😊😊
The flock has landed! Thanks for watching!
I have tried making these from others directions but I love how you explained it. My bird looks great now.
Oh, thank you! You made my day with this comment, seriously! I am so glad it was helpful!
Like it!!!
Thanks!! Another easy one!
How very sweet. And we can practice with copy paper. I am going to use this in some cards. Thanks.
I'm so glad this will be useful for you! I'm noticing quite a few folks in the comments are also card makers (as am I) so I may be doing a few videos soon about combining junk journal techniques with greeting cards. I did one before Christmas, may be time for more! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic, this is great. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for watching!
This is working so well as doves on a statue if Jan van Riebeeck (the leader of the settler colony in South Africa in 1652). His statue is always fullnof doves, and the Repurposed book I'm using was printed by 'Van Riebeeck library scheme'.
I love it when 2 things come together like this.
Oh my heavens, it makes me so happy to know this charming history and I'm delighted that the dove works so well for you! Thank you for letting me know!
Ann, this is just lovely! I can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful day! Sue 😊❤
Oh, thank you, Sue, so kind of you! I appreciate your watching!
Clever and easy! Thanks
They're just fun! And yes, it's kind of amazing to realize how easy it is to tie paper into a knot! Thank you for watching!
Such creative and beautiful ideas! Tfs.
Thank you, Caroline! This dove really is lovely, and I hope you try it! Thanks for watching!
How cute is that. I love folding paper but a knot im a little scared. Have to remind myself its only paper which i have a plethora of😅 i love birds...loved your other video❤
I know, the idea of tying paper into a knot is sort of crazy, but it's really so simple and it does work! And you're right, it's only paper!
LOVED this. Thank you 🙏🏾 very
So glad! I appreciate your watching, thank you so much!
Love these birds. Super cute!
I'm delighted you're enjoying all my bird-iness here lately! Thanks for watching!
Adorable.
Thanks, Jena! I plan on revisiting this one to use in Christmas cards this year, too.
Well, I know what I'm doing today! Thanks!
I'm sure yours will turn out great! Thanks for watching, Cassie!
What a delight 👏👏👏 These birds are adorable.
You are so kind - thank you!
Cute and clever! Thank you for sharing your idea.
You are so welcome! I hope you have fun making some! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for showing us how to create another sweet bird. I think the bird with a leaf on the pastel background looks like spring. The scrub jays have been building their nests here in California for quite awhile now. Love this idea! Please add more💜
Thank you so much! Yes, I'm definitely exploring more ideas for whimsical creatures. So glad you have scrub jays - we have several in our garden as well, and I absolutely love them. We also have the Stellar's Jays here - so showy! Thanks for watching!
HI ANNE, LIKEN THIS IDEA!!!!! Do take care. Fl.
Thank you so much - I hope you try it!
So stinking cute! Love birds!
Me too!! Thank you for watching!
Thats so cute. I love it. I never would of thought to do that. Thank you for being such a good teacher.
You are so welcome - I'm delighted you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching.
This is so cool! I love how this turned out. Thank you! ❤😊
Thank you so much! It was a surprise to me, too, especially how easy it is!

Hi Anne! This is a fantastic idea! Cute and beautiful! Thank you so much!🙏🙏❤❤🌹🌹
You are so welcome! I'm really thrilled you're finding some useful ideas here - I hope you have great fun crafting with them! Thanks for watching!
@@annekenlon I am from Brazil and find your chanel for me is like finding a treasure. Thank you!❤❤🙏🙏
It's the same beginning pattern for a puffy star that my high school students taught me years ago, but the strips were longer for the stars. I love your birds. My first tries were horrible! 🤣 I'll keep at it. These are fun. 👍🏾
Thanks for watching!!! Glad you enjoyed it - I really appreciate your comment!
Too cute! I love this 1 and the other bird you recently showed how to make.
Thank you! 😊 I really appreciate your being here!
This is so cute. I can’t wait to make some.
You'll have great fun with them, I know! Thanks for watching!
"Brill cream, a little dab will do ya; they'll love to get their fingers in your hair." LOL You brightened my day. Love your video.
Thank you, Donna! Those old ads do make us smile, don't they! Have fun crafting!
How cute! Thanks for sharing!! ❤
You are so welcome! I appreciate your being here, thank you!
Dryer sounded like the ol ice cream truck there for a min
Didn't it, though? I made up words to the tune that I always sing to myself when the dryer goes off - I didn't sing on the video, though! haha. Thanks for watching!
My first one looked like a whale 😂 The second one is really adorable. Thanks for sharing!
A whale! You're cracking me up! And making me sing the cute "Baby Beluga" song my grandson loved when he was tiny! Thanks for watching!
Made one and turned out pretty cute, will make more😁 thanks for the idea and video
So glad! I'm really honored you are spending your crafting time with me! Thanks for letting me know!
I am loving all these birds you are sharing. 💜💜💜
Thank you! I know we all love birds - so many ways to depict them in our journals! Thanks so much for your support.
Very very clever! Super cute! 👏🏻❤️🦜
Thank you! 😊 I think the clever one was whoever thought this up in the first place, which wasn't me, but I had fun experimenting and sharing with you!
Excellent.
Many thanks!
It's so beautiful!!
Thank you - I hope you make some of these sweet doves!
I thought it was High Karate! That was a cute commercial!
Hahaha, I also remember "Hai Karate" - my mother did not approve of those commercials! But my brother and I loved them!
so clever. trying this for sure!
Have great fun with this sweet little birds! Thank you for watching!
Too cute, thanks for all your good ideas!
Thank you, Sheila, for watching! I really appreciate your being here!
Like this idea!
Thank you, Barbara!
I love birds and these are such great ideas!
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Brill cream yes
I looked up some Brylcreem vintage commercials on TH-cam later, and they are hilarious! "Makes your hair look excitingly clean...disturbingly healthy!" Would have been fun at the "Mad Men"-style ad agencies thinking this stuff up!
I tried it and I love them too ❤.
Oh, I'm so glad you gave these a try, Andrea - thank you for letting me know! And thanks for watching!
How cute! I did several of those other birds you did, and now I will have to do these! Yes Brillcream (sp??)... Sheesh!
Have fun! It's amazing how excited we can get about tying paper into a knot, isn't it? Thanks for viewing!
Really cute craft
Thank you so much!
Love this, I'll be making some tomorrow.
Oh, good, I hope you'll love them! Thanks for watching!
BRILLIANT!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You flatter me, Marlene, but they really are fun to make. Thanks for watching!

SSC..So Stinkin Cute!! ❤ I love these! I have lots of vintage sheet music from which I will make some birds. Great project!
Thank you! 😊 You'll have fun with it, I promise!
Yep, briilcream! My Dad and brother used it. Lol!
Sweet creations. Thank you!
I'm sure my dad did, as well - such was the day! Thanks for watching!
I made fifty birds of whimseys. I need to find more room for beautiful doves!
Oh my golly - you have a whole flock! Thanks for letting me know!
😊eo sweet
Thank you! Have fun making yours!
Absolutely LOVE these Stinkin Cute Birds. Project for tomorrow!
🏴
Hooray! I'm delighted you have me on your Friday agenda! Thanks for watching!
Those birds are awesome!
Thank you, Irene - I appreciate your watching!
These birds are so cute. I have a jar of strips on my desk so I'm ready to make my flock! Thanks for another great bird idea Ann!
It's just amazing what we can do with a strip of paper, isn't it? Thanks for watching, and I hope you're having great fun making yours!
I’m new to your channel. I love birds
Welcome! And thank you so much! I have some new birds "flying in" soon, too!
L like anything with birds. So I’m really enjoying your videos with birds. Thank you
So nice of you - thank you!
O my high karate wow
There are great old "Hai Karate" commercials on TH-cam - they are cringeworthy now, and inappropriate on SO many levels. Such was 1960s advertising!
I adore birds. We feed them in our backyard, and we have lots of mourning doves so I am going to make some of these, so excited to try this folding technique. Thank you, Anne. Wishing you a blessed day.
Thank you so much - I know you'll have fun with it! Yes, I grew up with mourning doves in Nebraska, and their mournful sound is part of my memories from early summer evenings on the farm. Thanks for watching, as always!
Omgosh ADORABLE !!! I made a stack of your whimsy birds..and today I'm off to make a stack of these lil doves!! I just love them❤❤❤ thank you for sharing!
You've got a big ol' flock going on!!! I'm so happy to hear this - do have fun!
What a great project and only using scraps you are very good at this thank you
THEOLA
You're so kind, thank you so much Theola!
SO CUTE! So creative! TFS!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like these little birds!
Love it! I’m sure I’ll require a little practice to cut it right, but you’ve made it SO SIMPLE! Thanks so much!
Practice helps, but it doesn't even take that much - remember, IT'S ONLY PAPER! But I liked doing the "test strips" as well. Just make 'em and have fun! Thanks so much for watching, I appreciate it!
Cool ❤
Thank you - hope you try some!
What beautiful little birds😍
Thank you so much, Sue! Have fun making some!
Well I love the little birds I can't make the strip of paper into to a bowl without tearing it so I guess I will not make any of these but thanks for sharing p
So sorry, Peggy, but do try another type of paper if you like - you might be surprised that some are a lot less brittle than others. Regardless, thank you so much for watching!
Just before the curve for the head, you could have gone sharp point for a blue Jay!!
Do you know what, I did think of that when I was cutting! I love the crested blue jays - that's the kind I grew up with in the Midwest, but our scrub jays here in Oregon are round-headed. Thanks for watching!
Well, as I was watching youtube while making beads from paper strips when I saw your video, I had the resource at hand and just the right size too. So I made one in about 2 minutes flat and it was very easy indeed.
I was thinking what paper might be good from the point of view of what is on it and old sheet music would be I think. If you didn’t want to cut up music then printing some music onto plain paper then cutting that up would work.
or…if you wanted to use as part of an xmas decoration or even an occasion card then printing appropriate words like christmas carols, prayers, greetings etc of any kind would add to the context of the bird. I might try it.
Thank you! I think sheet music would be great as well, especially the smaller scores. Most of my sheet music is old and quite brittle, but I have some that is in better shape and has smaller notes - glad you're enjoying it!
Klasse 👍🤩👏
Danke, danke!!!!!
❤these are so darn cute❤I've subscribed ❤ 😊
Thank you, Diane! I'm thrilled to have you aboard - I appreciate your watching.
Love the birds! ... however I really want you to show us how to make that glue pin! 😊
Oh, my, I LOVE that glue pin! But I didn't make it! I got it on Etsy - if you do an Etsy search for "glue bottle stopper" you will find a lot of them. The main thing is that is has to have a stainless steel pin (different from a sewing pin) so the pin won't have a rust reaction with the glue. I was ALL the time losing my pins before I got that one - with the beads, it just. never gets lost on my desk. Thanks for watching!
Yes, Brylcreem! A little dab will do you. You can still buy it.
Oh, wow, it's still on the market? To each their own, I suppose...but the slogan is fun to remember. Thanks for watching!
Funn! It actually helps me to get bird proportions in my mind for when I want to draw a bird. Does that make sense?
It absolutely does! I've been doing the same thing! Thanks for watching!
I love these crafts Anne...lovely...well done...a dab..hehe..do you know what do a dollop is from? ❤B
A dollop of Daisy, of course! ❤️❤️❤️
thhis is called a lovers knot. It is the foundation for making a puffy 5 pointed star. If you hold this piece up to the light, you will see the shadow of a five pointed star. Tying this knot has always been iffy for me; thanks for the simplified directions.
Thank you so much! I didn't know it had an actual name - how lovely!
Okay. I thought it was a BIG little bird and when you started tying the first strips I thought how in the world?? And when you said it was easy 😂 I thought.
The adult in me likes the formal and the kid in me the whimsical!
And Brylcreem - yes exactly their tag line. Apparently they removed it from packaging at some point but it’s back. 1928 was the beginning and was popular with British pilot soldiers whose longer hair was kept slicked back when in nasty battles. Brylcreem USA (no spaces and the usual period com. If I type the other my text will disappear) has the info.
And I’m typing while and watching but I don’t know if you said where the background paper came from on the dove w the branch. I’ll have to be kind and rewind. 😂
Very nice. Now. Will I be able to do this? As you were first cutting the throat (oh that doesn’t sound nice at all) I could NOT see the bird. Like the wood crafter who has to chip away everything that is not the intended result … tada … for you. I may search my scroll saw patterns for a small bird to copy cuz I’m not sure I’ll see the bird throat, beak and head!! 😂
How many slogans in this text? 😂❤
Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed this, Jenn! That paper was actually from a Stampin' Up pack I got a few years ago. They change their collections all the time so I don't know if it's still available. I don't buy many card making supplies anymore, I am so fixated on the free/upcycled supplies for junk journals!
@@annekenlon ❤️
GilliParisharts is the one making birds with a strip of papers. She is on PINTEREST.
Gilly not gilli
Thanks, Nicole, I'm glad to know who she is!
Brill Cream, alit;e dab will do ya, lol
And TH-cam makes it easy to look up those old commercials! Never thought I would have been referencing a greasy mid-century hair product while talking about craft glue, but yet, here we are! Thanks for watching!
Dipity Doo, a little dab will do ya....
I went through many jars of Dippity Do back in the day!
It was brelcream! I love the different birds you use. Did you do paper crafts in school? lol 😢 I’m Linda from Chico, where are you from? Nice to meet you.Anne
Thanks, Linda! Actually, I only started paper crafting about 15 years ago - and I was strictly a card maker until I discovered junk journals during the lockdown days of the pandemic in 2020. I live and craft in Oregon. So glad you are here!
Yes, it was Brill Cream
I love that so many of us remember it so well! Glad the product isn't in style any more, but the jingle was good fun!
Breyl cream. A lil dab will do ya. I may have spelled it wrong.
That little dab stuck in everyone's memories, I think! Thanks, Rhonda!
What type of glue do you use?
I tend to use Art Glitter Glue, a quick-drying white glue that works so well on paper! There's no glitter in it - it's just the brand name!
dippidy doo
Dippity-Do was a fun product - I went through so much of the green "extra hold" gel in the late 60s!
Brillcreme ... Little dab will do you.
So funny!
