He ended up spending two years in a tiny office on an island in the middle of nowhere with the woman he hated so much, he tried to move halfway across the Pacific to get away from her!

There's no suitable land for landfill and no recycling services that is cheap enough, so unfortunately it does tend to just pile up and eventually it is just all removed at once. Its just a product of how products are packaged unfortunately. If consumable good were put in reusable dispensers they might be able to cut it down but it is a few years off.

I just want to point out that Clifford Stoll is a generally awesome person who is the world's only mass producer of Klein bottles and if you can watch this numberphile video ( th-cam.com/video/-k3mVnRlQLU/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Numberphile ) without smiling then you are dead inside. Although, yeah. he was a bit off about that whole internet thing.
