  • After months of careful planning, notifications of an abnormal load being transported from Ipswich to a substation at Burwell in Cambridgeshire. The heavy load specialists Allelys were appointed by National Grid to move the 184 tonne transformer.
    The journey was less than 50 miles but was expected to take 12 hours to get there due to taking local roads to ease congestion on the main A14 and restrictions of bridges.
    Around 07:30 police began to head to Cliff Quay to escort the transformer across Suffolk into Cambridgeshire. Preparations were taken in the few days previous to remove street furniture and cut back trees so it could get through.
    Police shut off Landseer Road to traffic going down towards the large load. A short while later, a contractor lorry helping with the transformer came in sight. They started to remove the remaining bollards that was left in for the traffic. The police were very friendly and were advising where it was safe to stand so we didn't get in the way and how long it was going to be before it came in sight. More police started to arrive, motorbikes to start with to block off the roads up ahead then the panda cars rolled up, within a few minutes in the distance the front tractor unit was in sight. Steadily at less than 10mph they rode up to their first obstacle, a mini roundabout.
    For the driver, it was just like any other day. The 184 tonne transformer, tractor units and heavy lift trailer had a combined weight of over 400 tonnes. Suffolk police had the privilege of escorting this massive load through Ipswich, over the Orwell Bridge, through Stowmarket on local roads and continue on the A14 before crossing over the wrong side of the carriageway before crossing back at Newmarket then take local roads to Burwell.
    After leaving Ipswich, they travelled down the A14 to Stowmarket where they left the carriageway to take local roads due to a long suspension bridge that wouldn't be able to take her weight safely. 20 minutes before her arrival the police shut the road off to give her a clear run through. Police bikes rode through waving to the crowds that had turned out to see the monster move. Carefully navigating along they came up to Bury Road Roundabout. The driver made it look easy going around the roundabout. Sitting at the back of the aft dolly, a third driver was remotely helping steer around the tight corner.
    A 45 minute break was called when they got to Tott Hill services. After that, they steadily went along the old A14 to Haughley where they continued onto the A14 to Bury St Edmunds where it becomes a it interesting.
    Junction 44 Moreton Hall, they had to exit the A14 down the slip road and back up the other side due to bridges that couldn't take her weight. For the next 2 junctions she done the same. Sugar Beat Factory roundabout and Westley interchange. At Risby, the large load had to cross the carriageway onto the wrong side and travel west on the Eastbound side before crossing back over to the correct side at Newmarket to follow local roads to Burwell, its final destination.

    Some amazing driving and really good video but I had to watch it with the sound off. Seriously inept commentary "there's no way you'll get round here mate" etc... Do you think they do no planning at all?

    They laughed in the face of that 7.5 ton weight restriction (even if it only applies overnight).

    Good footage, nicely captured. How did you find which route they would be taking and the date they would be moving it? I would've thought they make an effort to keep that information from getting out to stop crowds forming along the way.

      It was published in the local newspaper and suffolk police sent out warnings of the abnormal load they would be escorting across the county.

      There is alot of planning an abnormal load route and they have to plan it in a way in which the roads won't be badly broke afterwards.

    I think most viewers could tell what was going on, it would have been better without 'the running commentary' - just saying.

    If it came from Ipswich and was going to Cambridgeshire, what was it doing in Stowmarket?

    • @deanocable
      @deanocable  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was a stretch of the A14 between each end of Stowmarket. The span of a suspension bridge wasn't safe enough to take the weight of the load.

      @@deanocable When an ALE hauled transformer similar to this came through my area, they had to take it along the service road of part of the A3 because the middle part of the A3 (the main carriageway) wasn't assessed to be strong enough where it goes over a bridge over a small river but the edge was. (The main carriageway takes heavy lorries all the time, the service road hardly any.)
