Very cool shots. The blending between the emotional music and the slow motion shots were executed nicely. Had my GH4 backpacking around Europe last year. This camera is a great piece of equipment.
Absolutely breathtaking Michael. Could you please do video sharing you settings the GH4 as well as some pro tips about shooting with the camera?? I just ordered the GH4 and would love some insider tips after being so inspired this project? thanks again!!!
Cruzboy Yep, and take into account that this was my first try, with VERY light editing. You can achieve a much greater result with some experience and proper lighting :)
Great work, the quality is very solid across the board. 96fps looks great to me, only camera geeks would know what to look for to try and point out any flaws. To put things in perspective the 96fps quality, speaking of resolution and detail are still better than anything coming out of a 5dmkIII in any of it's unhacked modes. I've also just received my GH4, and I've shot some stuff with a 30yr old OM 50mm 1.4 with great results. However I find that focus peaking in dim lighting can struggle a bit. Did you use FP with your old Nikon 50mm, with much success?
I guess it all depends on light for the software to be of any use. It has to look at pixels side by side, and the less light you have, the less details it has to read from. Sometimes I get a huge amount of FP, and sometimes barely any, but like you said - that is often indoors with dim lighting. This happens with all lenses, as I can recall. At present time, I have ONLY manual lenses, so I'll be working with FP alot, although my preferred method is to have a function-button mapped to zooming in the image in the viewfinder and setting the correct focus that way. Thanks for your comment!
Graeme Franks It's capable of so much more, to be honest :) This was my very first try, and after nearly a year of working with it, I've seen it being capable of amazing results! It truly grows with you. Enjoy your purchase and join us at the "GH4-Creative!" group on facebook :)
Really nice video. I like it a lot! What is your opinion of the gh4 + metabones speedbooster with the sigma 18-35? Is it sharp and is iit good in low light and does it gives you a nice bokeh? I'm getting a gh4 in a few days and i am considering this combo. I like the sharpness of the panasonic 12-35 but i what i don't like is that you will not be able to get that nice bokeh with it and the fact it's not that great in low light.
I'm not going to claim to know what combo is the absolute best, but the GH4/Speedbooster coupled with a Sigma 18-35 gives you a great deal of options, and some of the best lowlight footage around. My 50mm f1.4 is still a bit brighter, but way too soft when shooting wide open. The Sigma is super sharp at all f-stops. I find myself coming back to the Sigma all the time, although I try out a lot of new lenses. And the bokeh is great. The GH4 is not a great low light shooter, but the speedbooster and f1.8 sure helps. And when the quality in good light is as amazing as it is, you can overlook it's shortcomings and work around them :) I kinda like the lowlight look of the GH4, it looks quite natural.
Great vid brotha! The visuals were clean! The GH4 combo with the sigma just arrived for me! Can't wait to get some content out there. Question.....what were your export settings from iMovie. This uploaded version to TH-cam is such great quality. I lose so much quality when uploading to youtube. HELP! haha
Nothing special about the export really. To be honest I can't even remember, I believe it was a standard .mov export. Some times youtube can really mess with your quality by creating dithering etc, maybe I was just lucky. But to be fair, I had a lot of natural light, and stayed in the very low iso's. That creates a clean picture, right there.. If you have a noisy one, I have to recommend the Photon Pro noise reduction plugin. It's incredible! I'm going to upload a few comparisons soon, because this thing just blew me away, and has saved so many failed shots :)
+Feel Good Now Thanks! Most of the time I used the Sigma 18-35mm, but I also used an old Nikkor 25mm f2.8 for the slowmo jump over the fence and the shots before it (the sigma got too heavy for my glidecam).. Other info in the description ;)
This is gorgeous, makes me wish to go to Norway! I've seen a lot of poor footage from GH4 online, but your video encourages me to get this camera/Sigma combo. Did you color grade this footage in post? If so, what did you do? Did you use any LUTs? Thanks, great job!
Thanks :) Well, this was somwhat graded. I had nothing else but iMovie, so I did some minor adjustments to color there. If you want to see grading where I did a bit more experimenting in FInal Cut, I would check out this one on my vimeo-profile: vimeo.com/108684310 I'll be experimenting with FilmConvert in future videos to get that nice filmgrain :)
Inspiring work.. just bought the GH3 very recently and had to subscribe to you (although you do have the GH4)... I have also been looking into a glidecam, but figured I'd have trouble balancing my GH3 while trying to manually focus my lens. What type of stabilizer did you use in this video?
+BrittnySyndrome For this one, I only used a stabilizer on a few shots (filming the guy walking after driving, and jumping over the fence). Slow-mo lets you get away with handheld a bit more. I use the glidecam hd-1000, but it's a pain to balance. I'd look into buying a gimbal from Came-tv or DJI if your budget allows for it, although you'll have a hard time focusing at the same time without some sort of (expensive) remote focusing system. There are also cheap shouldermounts on ebay that could help your shots a great deal, I use this one: www.ebay.com/itm/Shoulder-Mount-Support-Pad-Stabilizer-for-Video-DV-Camcorder-HD-DSLR-DV-Camera-/181573677019?hash=item2a46a26fdb:g:VukAAOSwNSxVGkKp It helps keep the shaking down, but you still shouldn't run around with it :)
hello michael, i have a gh4 and also interested in buying sigma 18-35, however i got no budget for a metabones speedbooster. Will a passive ef to mft adapter work as well?
Well it sure should. I haven't tried one, but there are loads of inexpensive adapters out there. It'll be a bit darker, and it will function more as a 36-70mm f1.8, but it should be fine. With the speedbooster, it operates as a 25-50mm at f1.2. In case anyone wondered, a normal lens (dx) on a MFT camera like the GH4 doubles the focal lenght, so a 50mm would become a 100mm. With a speedbooster, you have to multiply with 1,4 instead of 2, so a 50mm would be 70mm.
0:57 - Glidecam HD-1000 for these three shots, otherwise handheld. Go for a Pilotfly H2 or a Zhiyun crane gimbal if you want a modern, more conventient stabilizer.
Hey Michael, first of all great footage man, looks great... I just wanted to know how did you manage to blur the background, like for ex. at minute 01:25 on the shot of the lady? was it the lens or you did that on post? Thanks.
Hi Carlos! That's easy, and something you should do in-camera. Pick a lens with a low aperture number, like f1.4-f2.0 (this will make the effect easier to achieve). You should also use a lens with some zoom. The more zoom you are using, the more "bokeh" you will get (bokeh is basically "blurry background"). I shot this girl at 35mm or 50mm. Experiment with your aperture and zoom, and you'll see the effect ;) Good luck.
I've actually been testing this a bit this week, but so far I haven't seen much difference. These have been done indoors though, with bad light. I know some people say 60 looks a bit sharper. I'll do some tests tomorrow when the sun is up :)
Thanks Frank! I used a regular tripod for the shots at 0:34 and a Glidecam 1000 for the shots at 0:58 - 1:21. The shots with the girl were done handheld. You don't really need that much stabilization when shooting at 96 fps, although I wish I had used it during the nightshots, like 2:17.
Most of what I have seen so far in terms of 96fps stuff looks like quality took a hit, but this video is really beautiful. How do you feel about the slomo stuff? Again, great video :)
Thanks! I am constantly impressed by how sharp you can get the slowmo. A little planning goes a long way, and light plays a huge part (as it should). But I was amazed at how sharp the image could get with only streetlights at night with an f1.4/f1.8 lens. I'm using my dad's 30 year old nikon 50mm f1.4 in several of these shots, it works beautifully.
Thanks! Not sure what you mean by "de-clicked", but I do have aperture control on the speedbooster, and it is totally smooth, no steps/clicks. Love it. This of course works on all lenses, you just have to manually set the aperture of the lens to the highest aperture, and then the speedbooster ring takes over.
+Geoffrey Fake Well... The slow motion parts are in 96fps, and the regular speed clips are 4K. Everything has been downscaled to 1080p, and slow motion cannot be done in 4K on the GH4.
Thanks Jake, but the color grading really is my biggest regret in this video, since I didn't have FCPX working yet. It's basic sliders in iMovie I'm afraid :) Just emphasizing the color tone I wanted in the right direction. Looking back, i went way overboard with yellow :p
Sweet video! Just further confirmed why I want the GH4! Hey Michael do you do any/willing to do video projects in USA or California? I like your filming and video editing skills could use that!
Man, I am a long way away from CA at most times.. probably be easier to find a good cinematographer around the neighborhood ;) But thanks, I'd probably take you up on the offer if I wasn't so Norwegian.
Yeah, I've learned alot since this first weekend. I absolutely hate noise in my picture, so I'd rather have a very dark picture than one with more visibility and noise :) Looking at the movie trailer, I'm sure you can replicate the "100 ft journey" look with proper settings and color correction.
+Ryan B The grading here is very rough, I'm afraid. At the time, I didn't have access to anything other than iMovie :) So...it's the basic sliders. I'm glad people like it, but to me it's looks pretty messy :p
Michael Johnsen when we like a song, its relates somewhere deep. We may not be sad, but it channels that portion directly in happiness too. ^_^ But you said you liked the 'sound' :D smart :). Which also means, you are a great visualizer and art director.
Thanks Liga :) On some shots, yeah. Mostly the first walking shots / jumping the fence (glidecam 2000). Others are handheld. You get away with a bit of shake when shooting slowmo ;) And if you're looking for a stabilizer, go for a Pilotfly H2 or something similar, to spare you the agony of balancing the glidecam all day :D
The GH4 is very much put down in terms of it's low light ability, yet out of all the many GH4 videos I've watched your dark shots had the least amount of noise I've seen. Is that a result of much noise reduction done in post or in camera? The low light restrictions are the only thing keeping me from purchasing this camera but if it puts out like what you featured around 0:19 and 1:53 - 2:22 I'm not very concerned. Also, nicely done keeping your colors constant shot to shot. It's one thing to have nice colors all around, which you did, but it's another still having them all fit together as if it was all shot in an hour under the same light conditions.
You know, mr. feet, I didn't use a single piece of noise reduction software, and I had noise reduction set to -5 in camera, so in theory, this should be as noisy as you get. The shots are dark however, and both the lens f.stops and the ISO are low, because I would rather have a dark image than a noisy one at the time :) I have come to accept some noise though
In the description. Mostly just the Sigma, might have used an old Nikkor 25mm f2.8 in the slowmo shots around 0:59, because the Sigma weighed down my glidecam hd-1000 :)
Barbara Giannini That's the metabones speedbooster working allright :) I had a bunch of old nikon lenses already, and I wanted the wider FOV and lower aperture stops, so it was an easy decision.
+kostas chelioths It's expensive, sure, but it gives you a lot. More light, a wider field of view, a great way to control aperture, and most importantly; A huge selection of good lenses. I wouldn't love my GH4 like I do without it, and I almost never take it off.
Sorry but the low light scenes are certainly not crisp, there are several shots with auto focus problems and the heralded 4K wide colour and contrast spectrum are not particularly evident. This film looks more like HD to me.
Everything is manual focus, my friend. And the movie is indeed downscaled to HD. All the slow-mo bits are in 100mbps 1080p, meaning most of the movie - and the frame rate is 96fps, the "worst" setting qualitywise. Like the title said: It's the first weekend, nearly two years ago. Things are looking much better now I can tell you :)
This has sold me on the GH4. You're a real talent.
Al Licks A year in, and I have learned so much more though :) Get ready to grow with this camera mate, it's a real good ride.
What a awesome video and beautiful music...

Thanks! Check the description for all camera details :) You'll learn it really quickly, promise.
Back again to re-watch this Beautiful Work of Pure Cinematic Art!! Time to whip out my GH4 again, hehe. Cheers
Brilliant footage!)
Great relaxing and inspiring video. I've spent a great chilling time watching this video.
+Michael Stchogolev Thanks Michael, I'm glad you liked it!
Hands down, one of the best tests I have seen! Great job! Can't wait to get mine
You won't be disappointed!
Stunning images!
wonderful! been considering this combo of camera and lens ... you may have just sold me!
Cruzboy Yep, and take into account that this was my first try, with VERY light editing. You can achieve a much greater result with some experience and proper lighting :)
Great use of focal lengths!
Good movie
Thanks!
Excellent! Thanks for sharing this masterpiece, Michael. Best Wishes ☮️
Really really enjoyed that! Great opening sequence!!

very great movie

I shot with little contrast and saturation, and then boosted them later :)
Oh.... I got it. thank you!! ;D

Muy bien..
Great video! Do you use Auto Focus in Slow Motion mode? Or manually?
I've never ever used autofocus in any movies I've made :D
Did you use some sort of rig to get these smooth shots? Awesome and inspiring work!
A glidecam at the shot where he jumps the fence, and the two scenes before that too. Otherwise its all handheld ☺
Hey Michael,
first of all great footage man, looks great...
I just wanted to know how did you manage to blur the background, like for ex. at minute 01:25 on the shot of the lady? was it the lens or you did that on post?

Thats great and thanks for taking some time to answer. Ill give it a try.
Great shots Michael!
Do you see a quality lost when shooting in 96fps when compare to 60fps?
The quality looks great:)
Cheers.
I've actually been testing this a bit this week, but so far I haven't seen much difference. These have been done indoors though, with bad light. I know some people say 60 looks a bit sharper. I'll do some tests tomorrow when the sun is up :)
Hi Michael Very nice, great mood. Did you use any type of stabilizer (Glidecam etc.) for your hand held shots?
Thanks Frank!
I used a regular tripod for the shots at 0:34 and a Glidecam 1000 for the shots at 0:58 - 1:21. The shots with the girl were done handheld. You don't really need that much stabilization when shooting at 96 fps, although I wish I had used it during the nightshots, like 2:17.
Michael Johnsen Thanks for the info Michael. Great little camera,
looking forward to testing it out as soon as my "back ordered" lences come in.
Great contrast.

Howell Masters cool man, glad I could help out!
Awesometacularness!
Thank you all for these great new words :3
coool!!
I so didn't want to like this camera but I'm buying it now! Damn thats some awesome imagery!
+Wesley Birden That's really nice of you man! The camera is a beast for sure, it'll serve you well :) Go get that speedbooster as well ;)
+Michael Johnsen Ok will do, it sounds like a must have everyone is talking about that speed booster.
Fantastic.
Thanks bro!
just a question.. you wrotte 4K and 96 FPS at ? 1080P?
+Geoffrey Fake Well... The slow motion parts are in 96fps, and the regular speed clips are 4K. Everything has been downscaled to 1080p, and slow motion cannot be done in 4K on the GH4.
Thanks Michael
AWESOME MOVIE by the way.
Nice style
how did you color grade the shots? Awesome work!
Man, I am a long way away from CA at most times.. probably be easier to find a good cinematographer around the neighborhood ;) But thanks, I'd probably take you up on the offer if I wasn't so Norwegian.
looks good ...a wee bit dark but good. I want to push a GH4 to look like "100 ft journey" movie quality.
Yeah, I've learned alot since this first weekend. I absolutely hate noise in my picture, so I'd rather have a very dark picture than one with more visibility and noise :)
Looking at the movie trailer, I'm sure you can replicate the "100 ft journey" look with proper settings and color correction.
What did you use for color grading?
+Ryan B The grading here is very rough, I'm afraid. At the time, I didn't have access to anything other than iMovie :) So...it's the basic sliders. I'm glad people like it, but to me it's looks pretty messy :p
Michael Johnsen What? You're nuts if you think this looks messy. This has beautiful skin tones and ambient.
Thanks Ryan :) I guess I'm trying to set my goals high.
Great photography and picturization and use of camera, shows in the video. So for a non-technical question, who is all that you want? :"))
Think you have to ask the author of the song that :) I just liked the sound.
Michael Johnsen
when we like a song, its relates somewhere deep. We may not be sad, but it channels that portion directly in happiness too. ^_^
But you said you liked the 'sound' :D smart :). Which also means, you are a great visualizer and art director.
Love your footage! im looking to create 15-20 second promo videos. would you allow parts of your footage to be used? Credit, no credit? let me know :)
Sorry Alex, this is some of my first footage and I no longer have the source material as far as I know :/
can't stop watching this one, awesome dude ,feel the chillness!! did you use any stabilizer?
Thanks Liga :) On some shots, yeah. Mostly the first walking shots / jumping the fence (glidecam 2000). Others are handheld. You get away with a bit of shake when shooting slowmo ;) And if you're looking for a stabilizer, go for a Pilotfly H2 or something similar, to spare you the agony of balancing the glidecam all day :D
is that 60fps or 96fps? looks crisp, anyway great video!
96. You get sharper images with 60 and a higher shutterspeed, but the 96 image at ss200 looks quite dreamy ☺️
Nice
Does anyone heard this soundtrack from a TV series called "Suits"?
Me :D But I cant remember which épisode :/
auresims Suits Season 4. The part where Rachel walks out Logan's office.
***** You rock!
which metabones nikon mount was it? G? or F?
That would be F.
What software do you use? Adobe Premiere?
I mostly stick with Final Cut Pro X, but this one was actually made in iMovie since I hadn't gotten FCPX yet :p
What lens did you use?
+Alfredo Blanco Check the description :)
What kind of stabilisation is used?
0:57 - Glidecam HD-1000 for these three shots, otherwise handheld.
Can you provide links? Thank you for your
Lenses?
In the description. Mostly just the Sigma, might have used an old Nikkor 25mm f2.8 in the slowmo shots around 0:59, because the Sigma weighed down my glidecam hd-1000 :)
Michael Johnsen Thank you very much Michael :) Have you used a normal adapter or a Metabones speedbooster?
Barbara Giannini That's the metabones speedbooster working allright :) I had a bunch of old nikon lenses already, and I wanted the wider FOV and lower aperture stops, so it was an easy decision.
Thank you :)
I buy the gh4 ,.but this speed booster is a lot money .
+kostas chelioths It's expensive, sure, but it gives you a lot. More light, a wider field of view, a great way to control aperture, and most importantly; A huge selection of good lenses. I wouldn't love my GH4 like I do without it, and I almost never take it off.
+Michael Johnsen about the turbo adapter from mitakon?
Sorry but the low light scenes are certainly not crisp, there are several shots with auto focus problems and the heralded 4K wide colour and contrast spectrum are not particularly evident. This film looks more like HD to me.
Everything is manual focus, my friend. And the movie is indeed downscaled to HD. All the slow-mo bits are in 100mbps 1080p, meaning most of the movie - and the frame rate is 96fps, the "worst" setting qualitywise. Like the title said: It's the first weekend, nearly two years ago. Things are looking much better now I can tell you :)
Nice clean images! Here is my first test. I am working on the next one. th-cam.com/video/zWBo96ODO_E/w-d-xo.html
