Oh! My God I am 72 years old from Girvan Ayrshire Scotland this recipe is the bomb I live in Chicago IL and found you by chance looking up a recipe for sausage rolls and subscribed to your videos i miss the food and candy so much loved to here you talk I still have my Scottish ascent I could see Aron from my town on a clear day when I lived there came to US A in 19 66 and am the only one left in my family thank you for bringing me back STAY SAFE
My Gramma was born in Scotland and came with family to Canada in 1912. Your recipe evoked so many fond memories of childhood Christmases and watching actually brought tears to my eyes. Should have known it but did not realize this treat to be of Scottish origin. We just knew that they were a big part of our holiday tradition at my Grandparent's house. When we got to their house for dinner on Christmas Day, we would make a bee-line to the treat tray to be sure we would not miss out. Now that I have your recipe, I will give it a try and re-introduce this tradition to my home. I could almost taste them when you showed the finished product. Thank you so much for this video
My father played golf three times a week with Johnny Lees, whose Lees’, “Macaroon Bars for picaninnies and grandpapas”, were famous in Scotland, probably still are! His was the first Rolls Royce, I ever had the excitement in which to be driven. Obviously not PC now, but we were completely ignorant of this type of thing in working class Scotland in the fifties. JL also made Coconut Ice, Tablet and Snowballs in their Whifflet, Coatbridge factory.
Wild idea that a sweet w/ mashed potato... would be good, let alone great. ;) Will have to try, tho.. for sure. Thanks for sharing! Stay safe & be well.
I live in West Virginia, where many people (including me) can trace their ancestry to Scotland. Potato candy, basically your recipe minus the coconut, is a very popular Christmas treat. People absolutely adore it and look forward to it!
I was thinking the same thing! My family is from Missouri, now living in Alabama and my mom sometimes makes potato candy at Christmas time. Not sure if we have any Scottish ancestry though.
senjidog.....that sounds like what we would call "lucky tatties" as kids......posh saying "lucky potatoes"........."whats for tea" must be posh calling tatties potatoes LOL
My son brought a souvenir box of these macaroons back from a recent Scottish holiday. As they say, these sweets are to die for and brings back many happy Scottish childhood memories. As for the recipe - I'm really surprised that there is potato in the fondant and I also thought, wrongly, that there was coconut mixed in with the fondant. Your home island looks idyllic.
Hi there Cheryl! Glad to see ya and hear your voice again. Its absolutely pouring the rain down here in California and this looks perfect to have with a cup of coffee!
As a scottish immigrant in portugal i cant wait to make these, by far these and fudge are my absolute favs. Should they be kept in the fridge for hot climates?
I'm from Maine, USA, the region called New England (just west of Nova Scotia or New Scotland). We make a coconut candy with potato, coconut & chocolate, called Needham's. Our recipe doesn't cover the outside with coconut, but that's about it. Really good and sweet, a Christmas time treat.
This looks delicious! I'm surprised by how easy it is to make. Thank you for sharing this. I have everything to make it so I'm going to make these for my Mom this weekend. I can't wait to try it. I love coconut and chocolate together. YUM! 💗😊
Hi Cheryl, just found you! Loved listening to your voice. You’re making me homesick, I used to love having a Lees macaroon bar back home. We can get them here (Oz) but they are dead expensive and the use by date is usually close to expiry so they’re not too fresh. Now I can make my own. I’m away now to binge watch your other recipes. You can take the girl out of Scotland, but you can’t take Scotland out of the girl! Thanks very much.
Loved seeing this recipe. Every Christmas when I was a child, my Mom would make a candy she called Teddy Bears. They were basically made of leftover mashed potato and coconut with icing sugar. She would shape it into little logs about 2 to 3 inches long. That was the body of the Teddy Bear. She would then dip one end into melted dark chocolate. That was the head. I loved these treats each year. I still have her recipe, but haven't made then because my hubby is allergic to coconut. I might just have to make some just for me this year. Thanks for bringing back these happy memories. Take care, and keep well.
I grew up eating these a very very long time ago I am also stunned to hear they are made with potato, I'm going to have a go making them 😋 thanks for sharing
For these to last more than a few minutes after making, I’d have to make them in secret and hide them. My kids would *love* these. My youngest son loves mash and I often have leftover, so I know what I am going to do with it. I am in Australia and chocolate treats are better in the coming cooler weather. Thanks Cheryl!
I *did* know there was spuds in these but I had no idea they were so easy to make. Would a common or garden hand-beater be strong enough Cheryl? One thing I thought of; would putting the coconut in a deep(ish) small bowl for coating them maybe save on some coconut? There seems to be an awful lot wasted. Just a thought.😁 Thanks for the recipe, Dougie.
Hiya Cheryl, I just came across you now. I'm originally from Edinburgh born and bred, but my parents emigrated with us to South Africa. Of course we never lost our Scottish traditions and the Scottish recipes. Lovely to watch you making our favourite goodies! Ps. I have a Son named Scott, a Daughter named Tiree and two grandchildren named Skye and Arran.
Great recipe Cheryl! Like a lot of the others I never knew about the tattie in the recipe. (I have used it for making the filling in cheese & onion pasties though. Comes out like the ones from a well known bakery!)
Hi, Cheryl. I love macaroons & so easy to make, at that. Couldn't believe when I first found out, they contain potato. 😂 I will have to make some soon. x
I know what I'm making with my 10 year old this weekend. ( it's bound to be raining again in Clackmannanshire this weekend!!!!). Making some tablet too to send to my lovely auntie in Liverpool as that's something else she can't get.
Thank you so much love these reminds me of my Childhood. I lived in Australia since I was 10 I’m 67 now. I was born In Tarbolton Ayrshire. And so glad I’ve found your channel.
Watching the video see the paddle, that has to be a Kenwood. Sure is, brought mine to the States. Love it. Mum has one, My Gran has one. My sister & I have 1.
Omg my favourite sweetie , I grew up with these always getting them from the ice cream van , thank you for the recipe I’m definitely going to give this a go x
My mum used to make coconut macaroons. Coconut, sugar and egg whites formed into little pyramids with a glace cherry on top and baked in the oven. Yours make me think of an inside out Bounty and I'm definitely going to make these. Thanks for the recipe. Love from Lancashire.x
I have made macaroon bars loads of times, when i make them i mix in some of the untoasted coconut with the totties, also i have made them with mint icing sugar and orange icing sugar. Mint and the orange are better than the plain icing sugar.
I think you are brilliant. I watch with caution as I love and miss a lot of the things you make. I am not Scottish but Irish and I love the fact that you think of us people missing things from home. Thank you also for putting things in ounses, I have been here in New York 36 years and have never learned the metric system. Also it took me years to figure out confection sugar was icing sugar. No Google then.
Interesting recipe...I've never seen a macaroon recipe containing potatoes in it before...the recipe I have always used has egg whites, sugar, vanilla and shredded coconut...
Thank you for this video and keeping our Scottish traditions alive 🙏 I absolutely love macaroon, Grew up eating it 😋 I think I got my sweet tooth from my wee granny 😂 I’ll definitely need to try and have a go at making it, I’ll have to remember to buy the ingredients tomorrow and how lucky are we to have this available in almost every shop we go to 🏴
Just found your channel and I'm already excited. I was born and raised in Irvine and moved to America when I was 18. 20 years later this brings back memories along with your tablet recipe. My sister sends me things from time to time but now I can make it myself. You have a new subscriber in me 😁😁😁😁😁
Hi Cheryl, thank you for the recipes I live in England and can’t get a lot of the Scottish food, since watching you I have been making lots of stuff and my family are loving it. Love this recipe as I have a very sweet tooth so will give this a go and the tablet one to. The birdies were fantastic so thank you so much and look forward to more recipes xx
Hi Cheryl, thanks so much for posting the vid & recipe. I'm in England and haven't heard of this - where have I been???? Was shocked by the potato as I didn't expect that. We have a family party next month so I'm going to give this a go, we all love chocolate and coconut, Have a blessed week, lots of love xx
Been making these for 50 years or so. My recipe calls for coconut to be included in the potato sugar mix. But everyone loves Lee's macaroon bars, if they are still available. Best wishes from South Africa
I've never made these (not much of a baker - my scones could kill if dropped from a great height) but I can still taste a Lees macaroon bar and the wonderful textures of the fondant and chocolate and coconut. Can't get them where I live so I'll just have to buy a food mixer so that I can try your lovely recipe.
Hi Cheryl , thank you for the recipe , I have got a few recipes I would like to share with you , best wishes to you and your family from Jackie and James xx
Ted’s Girl UK.....dont forget your woolies and raincoat....i love pitlochry alot but my favourite place is Dunkeld - down by the river listening to the birds - so peaceful (heaven)
I think I may have had these as a child ( back in the dark ages, lol), but seriously one cannot go wrong with coconut, sugar and chocolate! Adding tatties only improves the combination (but hold the butter/pepper or gravy , tho). Think I may give these a go, but as its only me I would probably halve the recipe. Unless they store well, then that may change things, you know... full recipe- smaller pieces. HaHa. Do they store well,; if so how and where? Also, should they be wrapped in perhaps parchment paper or the like. As for coconut I prefer the desiccated coconut you've used over the shredded sweetened flaked variety. Anyway, have a relaxing Sunday and a Fantastic week ahead. *LK* And just a few words to think on... Happy times and bygone days are never lost... In truth, they grow more wonderful within the heart that keeps them. These are not my words originally but a saying I read decades ago and have reflected on many a time in my life since. Hope it helps some.

A big thanks from a Scotsman in Austria…this is fantastic. Brilliant to get a wee taste of home.
Scottish Macaroon is the crack cocaine of sweets, the kids here go absolutely Tonto after eating it.

Great recipe for Passover as we are not allowed to use flour for the duration of that holiday. I’ll be making these. Thank you!
Hi Cheryl never realised potato was one of the ingredients in macaroons x

I was going to post the same thing and you saved me the trouble.

I'm from California, and my mom used to make this. She was from East Texas of Scot, Irish and Cherokee descent.
My son brought a souvenir box of these macaroons back from a recent Scottish holiday.
As they say, these sweets are to die for and brings back many happy Scottish childhood memories.

If returning south past Somerset please, please bring me some back. I have never had a macaroon bar for years.
Magnus Walker if you can’t make them, search for them on the internet, you can get them almost anywhere, but they’re expensive!
Magnus Walker No, I’m sorry Magnus, I’m from Yorkshire so it would be a bit of a detour! I’ll eat one on your behalf 😉
Looks Yummy , I love macaroons. Which I find funny because I hated coconut as a child.
It's a bonus to like your recipes but to be honest I'd tune in to hear you read out a phone book. Lol Love your voice. Pet Jasper for me!
Thanks Cheryl ❤
