Was lucky enough to know Gil when he just started playing drums as we were good friends as children and teenagers. He's no doubt gotten better since then, but I still can't help to think that he basically played with that much class as a teenager in jazz band at school, which is mind blowing. I remember feeling just as excited watching him play then as I do now. Definitely a prodigy and a major world talent on the drums. Congrats, Gil!

Heh. One single sentence changed everything. "Lead from the elbow". This just clicked in my head and presented itself as a missing link in translating Moeller successfully into practice. Thank you!

I learned so much from this, even as a 20+ year drummer. Excited to work some stuff out! Also, I got a lot of validation from this, because I taught myself drums by playing along to the Beatles, and a lot of things Gil discusses as 'old school in a modern context' I can do because Ringo did them, and I learned to play like him all those years ago. If this video was a VHS, I'd wear it out!

Drumeo And some people say non-classical music has no order, just chaos. By listening to it more, it’s actually a complicated or different structure of it’s own(on every song i mean). Beautiful! But knowing this, one can say some songs are just 💩😅

First off, thank you so much Drumeo!
    another very inspiring drum lesson!!
Gil is an absolute beast and I relate to the "I'm a Musician" sentiment.
I regularly play Rock/Metal but I also gig as a Jazz Drummer and Play for a 50's rock tribute band and have a Latin Jazz/Afro background.
Musical Language and Versatility only expands your artistic vision when it comes to making up drum parts.
    Great inspiration Gil!!

Don't know much about this drummer, but I'm thoroughly impressed and will be researching him to find out more info. His drumming definitely speaks for itself. Really concise and well relayed instructions to the audience both experienced and inexperienced players. Also, he covered several genres of music, very, very different from one another and sounded masterfully on each style. Great, lesson and even greater chops! Keep on jamming man.

      Derek is a funk dude.
The change for him was death metal.

While mahavishnu was extreme too but he has that culture, he loves chick webb

Happy birthday to me! Awesome to see and hear Sharone's take on applying time-tested mechanics to present-day vocabulary. Thanks much to Gil and Drumeo!!!
...btw, at around 24:00, it looks like the fast doubles with sticks on the snare incorporates finger movement for both hands (hard to see w/ camera angle); and hands on leg incorporates small moeller movement (watch the elbow). So, it's kinda 'splitting hairs', but neither are completely wrist-isolated movements. Defintely true, it's not bouncing, but at these faster speeds, the adjacent joints to the wrist have to help out to keep the articulation of the doubles even. Thought it's worth the observation since we're talking the fine points of technique. Thanks again!

Gil, I need input, what stock size do you use and are you a fan of nylon tips for cymbal and ride techniques and clarity? I’ve been using 5AN but wish there was a longer taper and increased length. The Vic Firth extreme 5AN have the length, but the taper adds too much weight personally to the end.

Im just asking, so don't go angry on me :)
23:10, isn't it about fingers, not wrists? because, as I see, he doesn't hold it and lock it with right hand. So he's fingers is open for that hand for sure, camera shows thats. Or maybe it is okay for that kind of technique?

    • @doubled5159
      @doubled5159 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I see what you're saying. To me (and I am no expert) he is keeping his hands loose, so when he moves his wrist, the fingers open up from the palm naturally. But he isn't using his fingers to move the stick. I was always taught to not hold the sticks very tightly in your hands. Enough so they don't fly out of your hands, but you want the stick to have some freedom. If that makes sense?

Gil practice your Burru beat... And the first tune of the Ska medley by WST the b section is actually a Burru beat them back to the a section with the Ska shuffle. Regardless good work brother. Drumeo check out Scott Abels the former drummer for Hepcat who's an amazing Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae drummer. Regardless thanks Drumeo for featuring Jamaican music which is subconsciously responsible for so much modern music. Much Love and Light, AG.
