  • How do shipwrights seal joints and seams to keep their wooden vessel watertight? They drive hemp and cotton soaked in pine tar into the seams between the planks. The term to describe this process is regionally called "corking," or elsewhere more commonly referred to as "caulking."
    Nate Slater, Lead Shipwright on the Shenandoah Restoration Project at the Harbor History Museum, Gig Harbor, WA, demonstrates the corking process.
