Wonderful to hear about them growing wild/outdoors for you. I am trying to grow a few maidenhair varieties in my garden and there's not much info out there on growing them outdoors. I'm doing my best.
I've had mine for just over a year, to start with I was scared of over-watering so I let it dry out too much. I did some research and was told it's pretty much impossible to over-water them so I cut it right back and started watering it a lot more. I over-watered it and it got some root rot! However I stripped it right back and re-potted into terracotta, moved it into my living room from the kitchen so I can keep more of an eye on it and now it's full of tiny new growth, it makes me so happy I almost want to cry! I can't wait for it to return to its former glory
I love the structure of these plants, they're so airy and beautiful, but I will never spend my money on another one again. Once I've killed the same type of plant three times, then that's it for me.
This fern is no joke, I forgot to mist mine frequently for a few days and it shriveled up. I cut everything off and placed it in my bathroom. It's been there for less than a week and theres already signs of new growth.
The key is to always keep the soil damp. Water it every few days, let it drain completely, repeat. Also keep it in a area away from direct wind and sunlight
Hi Summer, because of your video this is the first time ever I've learned to care for a fern!! My Maidenhair fern has been growing beautifully!! I have it under a grow light and I mist it daily and water it every other day and I absolutely love seeing the curled up fronds when they emerge!! Aww and miss Kippee, may she rest in peace!! I just LOVE this plant, thank you again Summer, always love learning from you!!💖🤗🙏🏼🙏🏼
Just had to do some triage on my previously lustrous maiden hair fern today. We had two week-long heat waves (over 40C/100F for days in end) in early-mid December here in Australia, and even with a hydro spike and humidity pebble bath everything withered! I snipped back all the dead stuff today after sitting the fern in shallow water for a few days and noticed there’s new growth. I am very lucky to have a large, lush back garden with fishbone ferns growing under the shade of a big tree. So I’ve nestled the maiden hair in amongst the fishbones for the rest of the Summer as it just can’t survive without the benefit of that natural environment in these conditions. I’m looking forward to it regenerating and thriving. It’s such an enchanting plant, I love having it in my home. Edit: typos
I really like this fern, and to be honest have been reluctant to get one for the fear I have of being able to keep it happy, but now you have given me the courage to try one when I do find one. Thanks so much Summer again, see you tomorrow, bye for now.
I found that a few hours of direct sun is super useful for growth! Mine is about 4 feet from my south window, and gets about 4 hours of am sun and midday sun, the plant is 2.5 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide!
Maidenhair ferns grow wild on my rock wall and actually beautify the wall. The spores also land on my koi pond and love the moisture. Unfortunately, I frequently remove them from the cement walls of the pond as a concern the root system may damage the water tight integrity.
Alot of people complain that they're such a difficult plant, but they've probably been my most forgiving plant (I have 5). I've had a couple in not-ideal situations, and one completely died back, but they've all bounced back beautifully! Mine don't mind drying out a bit either. They're just beautiful and one in particular is MASSIVE!
i found a neat trick to keep these moist! i made a makeshift Olla with a simple clay glass and buried it in the pot alongside! i fill it up and the water slowly dissipates in the soil.
Ive tried to grow maidenhair ferns & they always died so once again I tried & it started drying out so I made it it’s own terrarium out of a vase! I put it near my humidifier & water when it’s looking dry. It’s in my north west window near the ceiling & it’s happy 🥰 I got it in the summer & it’s winter now 👍🏼👍🏼
Great video! These take practice. I have these all over my yard, but am going to try one on top of a fish tank, just to see. they do usually come back even if they dry out, but the leaves are so beautiful they're hard to lose.
Maidenhair Fern is one of those mass-produced foliage plants that's actually pretty classy and real attractive. They are much easier in terrariums and will also do well in a paludarium or indoor pond with the roots in or around shallow water.
Got one of these today. I figured that I didn’t kill the asparagus fern (it’s thriving better than any), so I’d try the maidenhair. 😬 It’s soooo pretty!
I recently planted one above my refrigerator with a tray of water underneath. I collected these from the sides of our reservoir which is just beside a pond and the area gets the complete shade of our house... Let's see how it goes 😌 I keep misting twice a day...!
I love these plants too. And I just brought two of them yesterday. Hope I can grow them well in the future. I don't know why most of the time, I have already waited my plants dry out and watering them thoroughly but they still got the black root ultimately. Maybe my pots wouldn't have enough area for them to breath. Thanks for your information, I will try to grow them well. ^.^
I had no luck with maidenhair ferns and finally gave up. I found if I missed one day to water it'd be over. I had a humidifier too. I just couldn't make them happy long term. Re the Hydra Spikes, I got some online and they were working and then I found I lost plants and it was because the spike dried up. I guess that means it's a bad product because the seal isn't airtight? Have you ever had that problem? Since I had to keep checking the spikes I just went back to watering myself, defeating the whole purpose.
Barbara Lindberg I have this problem all the time and I have around 20-30 hydro spikes in my home and my patio. Sometimes I think they’re more trouble than they’re worth. A great idea, but rely on them and plants start to die if not constantly monitored to check they’re functioning. Which kind of defeats the purpose.
@@Christafafaf distilled water is similar in ph to rainwater. Tap water in general can be problematic for sensitive plants or just most plants over time since the minerals (Hard Water) in the water can build up in the soil and even kill your plant. I’ve killed every fern I’ve tried to keep. They’ll do great for a month or so but then one week I’ll forget about them and then bam dead! I guess I should stick to succulents
I let mine dry out, I water maybe once a week (same schedule as my succulents), rarely fertilize, AND it's directly in an eastern window in michigan year round and it is thriving??
I'd like to have opinions about the idea of mulching the pot top with leaves that contain sori. Why do I do this?: In the hope that it can help the cluster propagate. (for the skeptical: This is the way it's supposed to happen in The Wild…) Is it safe fungi-wise?
I'm confused. Since Maidenhair Ferns like moisture, what would be the purpose of planting it in a terra cotta pot that is going to dissipate that moisture through its walls?
I just bought an Adiantum raddianum in a 14 cm pot. I don't want to disturb the roots, but I wonder if I could plunk it soil and all into a 18 cm self-watering pot with leca.
I LOVE this fern because it is so delicate and graceful. I also like Angel Vine very much although it is not a fern. Knowing those are two of my favourite plants, are there others you would recommend for me, please? Thanks.
They are NOT tolerant to low light conditions. In fact they will start to dry up very quickly in those conditions. These plants need a lot of light, they just do not tolerate scorching direct sunlight.
@@vagingo I grew a variety and they are just like a cactus in some instances due to the substrate and mixture. The ones that I know are "difficult" I have given away.

suzanne here, one thing with these, do NOT touch the leaves,, they absolutely hate it, the oils from your hands literally will kill them, if you keep touching them, any thin leafed plants do NOT like to be touched, ferns in particular haha
My mum had a huge maiden hair fern for years and years, not sure what happened to it. I tried to grow one and it became infested with aphids and it died. I'm a bit scared to try again.
why mine always dies spray it , water it filter light and they shrivel up and turn brown and drop no growth I have had 4 fully grown from the centre and within a moth they died what is wrong?/

I live in Oregon and I’ve seen maiden hairs in the wild growing near misty, cold waterfalls. They’re gorgeous in their natural habitat!
I know I am kinda off topic but do anybody know a good site to watch newly released series online?

I don't think misting it helps.... Just keep the soil moist..... That's my experience.
