I almost deleted the entire video from youtube and was going to fix that typo and one other then start all over again. But that would have taken about 4 hours and by that point it would have been saturday and fern friday would have already been an awkward fail. lol! I'm always very meticulous about grammar and spelling with the in video captions but to be fair i did finish editing this one with a slight concussion so i said screw it, i'll just release it and put a note in the comments. oh well! I have wanted to do blooper videos but until now haven't had a computer with enough memory to load all the videos to get the clips for editing. I do plan on doing something along those lines in the future.

A rule I live by with my ferns is that they don't like being in the sunlight but they love LOOKING AT all the sunlight. This rule has saved all of my ferns, hope this helps someone
when u have found a spot they like they are super tough, i have 2 huge plants in my bathroom, no windows just artificial light....ps.. talk to ur plants and these princesses like to be told how beautiful they are.

Maidenhair ferns are a bit different than most ferns because they like slightly acidic soil. If anyone is having trouble keeping them alive, I would recommend adding a tiny bit of lime to your soil mixture (especially if you're using peat moss, as it's alkaline!)
Lime adds alkalinity, not acidity. Unless you literally mean lime as in lime juice, which I don’t think you do. Let’s research this further, now I’m curious! If you have been adding lime bleeding that it was creating acidity and your friends have been thriving, now I’m wondering if perhaps they do like a alkaline environment. This might make sense in away because they grow among rocks in damp places, But now I’m totally reaching!
I have killed quite a few, but I love these ferns! So I am now trying to keep two alive and found your video, great tips, and my experience has taught me too. Drafts kill them, letting the soil dry out kills them, too soggy soil kills them, moving them around kills them. I will not kill any more beauties.
I loved the wet clothes example, it was very helpful for visual learners 👍 Maybe some time you might go over moisture meters, what the various numbers mean with some examples and maybe another set cloth visual. I know they usually have charts with them, but if you've never had a plant that needs to stay moist, you have no idea what the moisture reading should be and the charts don't usually reference the less common plants. Thanks for your videos.
I don't have a ton of experience with moisture meters but I'm planning on ordering several different types and doing a full video on them along with the examples like i did with the rags in the bowls. I do remember using one from lowes and thinking the readings were a little subjective and I can see it would be misleading or confusing for people. Thank you for the compliments and the suggestion!

I bought a maiden hair fern about a month ago from Lowes and repotted it right away and Its doing good so far! This is my first fern and I really didn't want to kill it so I water it about every 2 days and mist it in between! Picky girl!
Give a maiden hair fern a constantly moist area spores start easily....my spores grew on the pumace stone waterfall in a table bowl type foutain..so I left it there fountain still works fine. Terrarium type location great for these ferns. Thanks Jeff. You really can't let this one dry out or stay too soggy.

These plants grow naturally in my back yard with soil that’s basically just a chunk of clay! I’ve always wanted to take one indoors because they’re so beautiful but I’m afraid of killing it.
cloche nearly indispensable for those who grow - the true glass ones are soooo pricey. i have found several substitutes...old glass lamp shades -eg: hurricane lamp or old sconce type - for smaller plants, for larger , eg seedlings or starts as they grow outside in the garden, gallon water jugs top cut away, or, leave the top, with handle & pouring opening but cut cut around bottom edge evenly so it sits flush on earth... they can protect from pests, frost, drying out....i also use a large clear plastic tub that licorice comes in, twizzlers or some such. around 10 in diameter opening, straight walls, perfectly round, sturdy ..... @ 10- 12 in. deep. reduce & re-use, people.
I love maiden hair ferns! Ive got a lot of them. they grow from bulbs. Thats why if foliage die and you cutt it back they regrow. You can also pull them apart and get new plants.

I’ve watched so many of these videos saying that they are so fussy, but mine has been completely fine and I’ve messed up a LOT. Mine is a fritz Luther and it has been doing so good even though I’m a complete failure of a plant beginner.

But the ironic thing about maiden hair is that I have found them in the wild growing in the rocks under waterfalls, constantly water logged. Wonder how come our overwatering hurts? I mean right under the falling water! And it's obvious they CHOSE to be there, they weren't planted there. Just sayin... I have one in my fairy garden (carved wooden fairy home under it so it looks like a giant tree!) On my patio which is covered so it doesn't get any direct sun, just bright light. I mist and constantly check it for moisture. I have Scotch moss all around it and a large flat rock the house sits on. It seems to be very happy, but we'll see.
I'm a Maidenhair killer from way back. The only time they grew well was when I planted them in a copse of trees when I was still living in Ohio. So, not being able to find that jade plant here, I ordered the tricolor and Hummel's Sunset from Mountain Crest gardens. They should arrive next week sometimes, we'll see what I get (i.e. were they worth $3.95).
Most of us are maidenhair fern killers, that's why these ferns are going in terrariums. Most luck i've had with them outside was when I had a pond with a waterfall that splattered little bits of water here and there around them, but still despite being hardy varieties they never returned after a bad winter. That's exciting about your hummels sunset! It does look pretty on their website. Hopefully that holds true in real life! I always check for more tricolor jades for ya when i'm out. Every time i find them they are shriveled and sad looking.

The one that is mentionedd, a Maidenhair Fern is a new name to me, would like to learn more about it. I think it is good for your own hair growth too for ferns to be in the bathroom.

I brought two maidenhair (EDIT: they may have been Marisa...) fern plant babies early April from our local nursery. One went home with me and one I left on the office desk. I did the constant moist soil (check and pretty much watered a bit every two days so far April to May) on top of the soil dish like shown in the video here. Only difference is lighting. The one in my home is placed near west facing window - not a lot light comes in; the one in the office is placed near and open desk area with full glazing west facing wall - LOTS of natural indirect sunlight comes in throughout the day. And the one with access to tons of light in the office is grown 1.5 the size in the past month than the one in my place… (PS, as a responsible plant parent, I moved the house one to the office as well…)
I'm really struggling with my maiden hair fern..lost all the leaves by touching.. Tiny leaves are growing hoping to not touch them and see what happens too new growth.. Great info😅

I haven't seen this question yet in the comments but I have a fairly new to me maidenhair fern and it's soil is damp not soaking not dry, however the leaves are browning and crisping. I live in a fairly dry area so I have been misting them twice a day. Your video gave some insight into a potential problem because I had a layer of steel wool on top of the soil to get rid of fungus gnats that were there when I purchased it and I noticed the leaves down close to that center are struggling so I took it off hopefully some air flow will help. I may also try to buy a humidifier for this guy, any other suggestions you have would be appreciated but your video already helped a ton so thank you!
Hello! I don't know how big it is, but sometimes it is extremely helpful to put a glass cloche over them. I've seen someone on Instagram put a floral bowl/goldfish bowl upside down and over the plant which is genius for holding in humidity, and looked kind of cute too. Otherwise a humidifier might be the way to go if you live in a dry climate.
The tip about soil moisture was very helpful! I have a question regarding the pebble tray. Would it still be beneficial if I rested the pot on a small saucer placed on top of the rocks? Ex: My plant pot and small saucer is 6in wide, and the pebble tray is 12in wide. I see alot of people saying to place to the plant directly on the rocks, however I felt that with this method you could still benefit from the evaporation of the water and keep the soil from dirtying the pebbles and rocks making for easier cleaning.
I killed my first one as a teen....and I loved them so....learning curve....now I'm old and have a big one...but I set up a fountain....the kind with a grey oval resin bowl base and a waterfall type insert made out of lava type material....I added stones and more lava chunks and after a few years. O.M.G.....every hole in the lava stone that was kept damp...must of caught spore from the maiden hair fern..in the same room.....so my fountain eventually turned out magical maidenhair covered magical fountain... it became covered with ferns....I kept it for a few years that way they grew about a foot tall....but finally it got old fronds too thick...and I tore it apart....but to start more if you have an old one with spores put a saucer with water and a lava stone under the parent plant....or damp soil....for a week or so you....keep damp or put in a terrarium and cover and wait...more or less set and forget....

Tky for great information! What type of fertilizer is best? I got my piece of rabbit foot from a neighbor and feet are still brown with hint of white. Should I trim them back and use to start cuttings? I am in southeast of Alabama
Not a bad idea! Definitely worth giving a try. If the plants don't respond well to it, can always just pull the spikes. The moisture loving nature for them is also partially humidity related so not having the soil damp could be a problem in that regard. But it the air is nice and moist, I think the spikes would help and not hurt anything.
This maiden hair fern ....when adult with spores....will start babies in every damp pot......I have several....yes I have acidently let one go bone dry.....sometimes if you cut off dead fronds and stillvwater it will come back.
I'd like to have opinions about the idea of mulching the pot top with leaves that contain sori. Why do I do this?: In the hope that it can help the cluster propagate. (for the skeptical: This is the way it's supposed to happen in The Wild…) Is it safe fungi-wise?
That's a great idea! I don't know it would be a problem. A lot of people will add small handfuls of native soil to potting mixes to introduce micorrhiza fungi. Kind of a similar approach?
SCALE! I have lots of scale on one of my maidenhair ferns that I just can't get rid of. Can I use a systemic insecticide on my maidenhair ferns? Any other recommendations on how to deal with scale? Thanks!
Hey Matt! Oh no, not scale on a maidenhair fern! I don't know how the fern would react to a systemic. If it were mine I would probably start with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and would go through and dab it on every little scale bug that I see. Problem is, just about anything you put on the fronds of a maidenhair fern could burn them. Ok, maybe neem or insecticidal soap would be better to start with. Sorry... thinking as I'm typing. You know what though, it would probably be fine to just cut all the foliage off and start the plant over too. They rebound rather quickly from pruning given they are under ideal growing conditions.
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks so much for your replay! I cut it all off last summer and it has all grown back and more. I actually sprayed the entire thing down with alcohol a few times. I have some neem oil spray I think I'm going to try next. It's a rosy maidenhair fern and grows back fast. It's hard to tell if they are all dead as they don't move. It would be great if a systemic would work. I'll have to look into that more. Maybe I'll divide it and try a systemic on a division...use it as an experimental plant.

Just a quick FYI, The glass bell is called a cloche (clo-sh) it's named after those 20s style hats :)

I love five finger maiden hair ferns. A clump I have moved from house to house has been in my life for at least 60 years. It looked "not so great" this year. I was wondering can I divide some off and bring it indoors?
I haven't seen this question yet in the comments but I have a fairly new to me maidenhair fern and it's soil is damp not soaking not dry, however the leaves are browning and crisping. I live in a fairly dry area so I have been misting them twice a day. Your video gave some insight into a potential problem because I had a layer of steel wool on top of the soil to get rid of fungus gnats that were there when I purchased it and I noticed the leaves down close to that center are struggling so I took it off hopefully some air flow will help. I may also try to buy a humidifier for this guy, any other suggestions you have would be appreciated but your video already helped a ton so thank you!
Hello! I don't know how big it is, but sometimes it is extremely helpful to put a glass cloche over them. I've seen someone on Instagram put a floral bowl/goldfish bowl upside down and over the plant which is genius for holding in humidity, and looked kind of cute too. Otherwise a humidifier might be the way to go if you live in a dry climate.

The tip about soil moisture was very helpful! I have a question regarding the pebble tray. Would it still be beneficial if I rested the pot on a small saucer placed on top of the rocks? Ex: My plant pot and small saucer is 6in wide, and the pebble tray is 12in wide. I see alot of people saying to place to the plant directly on the rocks, however I felt that with this method you could still benefit from the evaporation of the water and keep the soil from dirtying the pebbles and rocks making for easier cleaning.
I don't see why that method wouldn't work! Great idea!

I killed my first one as a teen....and I loved them so....learning curve....now I'm old and have a big one...but I set up a fountain....the kind with a grey oval resin bowl base and a waterfall type insert made out of lava type material....I added stones and more lava chunks and after a few years. O.M.G.....every hole in the lava stone that was kept damp...must of caught spore from the maiden hair fern..in the same room.....so my fountain eventually turned out magical maidenhair covered magical fountain... it became covered with ferns....I kept it for a few years that way they grew about a foot tall....but finally it got old fronds too thick...and I tore it apart....but to start more if you have an old one with spores put a saucer with water and a lava stone under the parent plant....or damp soil....for a week or so you....keep damp or put in a terrarium and cover and wait...more or less set and forget....

Tky for great information! What type of fertilizer is best? I got my piece of rabbit foot from a neighbor and feet are still brown with hint of white. Should I trim them back and use to start cuttings? I am in southeast of Alabama

Has anyone tried using capillary action water spikes to keep these maidens watered? Thinking of trying it 🤔
Not a bad idea! Definitely worth giving a try. If the plants don't respond well to it, can always just pull the spikes. The moisture loving nature for them is also partially humidity related so not having the soil damp could be a problem in that regard. But it the air is nice and moist, I think the spikes would help and not hurt anything.
Put a cape sundew next to the fern and they will feast on your gnat problem. MWA HA HA HA HA!!!

This maiden hair fern ....when adult with spores....will start babies in every damp pot......I have several....yes I have acidently let one go bone dry.....sometimes if you cut off dead fronds and stillvwater it will come back.
Oh yeah, will spread like crazy with the humidity. I have brought home so many tropicals that have lots filled w baby maidenhairs

That's a great idea! I don't know it would be a problem. A lot of people will add small handfuls of native soil to potting mixes to introduce micorrhiza fungi. Kind of a similar approach?
SCALE! I have lots of scale on one of my maidenhair ferns that I just can't get rid of. Can I use a systemic insecticide on my maidenhair ferns? Any other recommendations on how to deal with scale? Thanks!

Oh no, not scale on a maidenhair fern! I don't know how the fern would react to a systemic. If it were mine I would probably start with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and would go through and dab it on every little scale bug that I see. Problem is, just about anything you put on the fronds of a maidenhair fern could burn them. Ok, maybe neem or insecticidal soap would be better to start with. Sorry... thinking as I'm typing.
You know what though, it would probably be fine to just cut all the foliage off and start the plant over too. They rebound rather quickly from pruning given they are under ideal growing conditions.
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks so much for your replay! I cut it all off last summer and it has all grown back and more. I actually sprayed the entire thing down with alcohol a few times. I have some neem oil spray I think I'm going to try next. It's a rosy maidenhair fern and grows back fast. It's hard to tell if they are all dead as they don't move. It would be great if a systemic would work. I'll have to look into that more. Maybe I'll divide it and try a systemic on a division...use it as an experimental plant.
