  • Maidenhair fern - aka adiantum raddianum - is one plant that definitely breaks the rules. In episode three of Plants With Impact, Tony Le-Britton debunks the myth that maidenhair ferns are hard to keep alive. This beautiful houseplant grows wild in South America in rock crevices and logs and is aptly named because of the fine black stems resembling human hair, which contrasts against the vibrant green foliage.
As a general rule, Tony suggests that most houseplants should dry out between watering - but that doesn't apply to the maidenhair fern, which needs to remain damp at all times. ‘It takes a little extra caution and checking it regularly to keep it happy,’ says Tony. ‘Every couple of days, just pull back the leaves and check the surface of the soil. If it’s starting to look dry, water it thoroughly right across the surface.’
With expert tips and advice on how to ensure your maidenhair fern will thrive, including positioning your plant in direct sun for several hours and with an unobtrusive view of the sky, Tony also reveals how to bring your plant back to life even if it looks like it’s dying and demonstrates how to nip off crisp or drying leaves to produce more new fronds.
