Nous I think favours those who seek to understand a concept/part of the universe and not just the universe as a whole as each member seems to have their own specialization. Ruan Mei specializes in plants/life/creation, Herta specializes in Aeons (at least she is heavily invested in researching them) and Dr Primitive wants to revert humanity to its basics in hopes of it evolving to a better form (in a way not much different from finality reverting humanity back 50000 years in Hi3 to try and see which was the best humanity to 'embrace' finality). Apparently Dr Primitive used a memetic virus to do it on Penacony and elsewhere (as seen with it being used on Rappa before, just a different 'variant') so maybe he specializes in memetic viruses as his means of research, much like Herta uses the simulated universe to research the Aeons and Ruan Mei uses her little creations and replicating the bug to research life/death. I've not heard of any ethical code that the society has so I am not surprised if they aren't ethical, and casting their ethics away in order to follow their research would show devotion and make it likely that nous would look at them.
