For me, this concerto is a musical bridge betwen the lush vocabulary of a romantic near-past and the ambiguities and energies of a looming modern age. It is brilliant at this task and delivers an exotic, mysterious atmosphere redeemed at crucial moments by the 'classic' comforts of Rachmaninoff's beautiful output. It's less to be compared to the first three concerti than to be taken on its own terms. Il grande Maestro riteneva questa l' esecuzione piu' perfetta ( " irripetibile" ) del concerto di Rachmaninoff: purezza del suono, note che scivolano non si sa da dove. Pianoforte che piu' tale non è. Di certo il pubblico russo ha apprezzato questa performance: non cosi' in Italia, spiace - e fa rabbia- che sia stato cosi' in Italia...
