Likewise, and the first piano sonata was also a formidable experience. I am elated that he has decided to play all those Rachmaninoff jewels this year in Paris (and evidently in the rest of the world as well).
Not a piano player but a musician. I follow him since a long ago. We heard him last year for the first time at the Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires. Unforguetable.
Some of the finest piano playing one is likely to hear nowadays. He understands just how to let this music speak for itself without ever becoming the “pretentious showman” while doing so-a skill lacking in so many of the young “technical wizards” being promoted as such keyboard masters nowadays.
@@SpaghettiToaster Suppose whatever you wish. Lugansky’s consistently unpretentious, but masterful performances of these compositions easily make the case.
Often thought theme and variations by prominent composers could be considered the epitome of compositional brilliance, likewise , the thoughtful and inspired communication of these various creations by artists, especially this one, are to be admired and to archive. Hard to describe the transcendental quality of this opus and it’s performance. Imagine a Chopin Prelude most of us learned, then writing a set of variations, then performing them in a fiendishly brilliant technically and artistic concert, as I am sure Sergei could easily have done; talk about rarefied air.

I was not in Paris a few weeks ago and I heard not him, so I am in bitter tears

Such as who?
I purposely didn’t name pianists because I’m not interested in a prolonged debate over people’s individual preferences here.

The Chopin variations are way harder than the Corelli ones. Magnificent performance!
