I like all the military branches, but the Navy is my personal favorite. It's the branch my grandpa served in during WW2. I've always admired Henry Fonda for his wartime service, especially for someone who was already an established actor and in his upper 30s during the time of his enlistment.
Henry is is two of my favorites for different reasons. Mr Roberts is a favorite to watch. Battle of the Bulge is one I say is so bad it has to be seen. It's not the actors who make it bad, just the historical inaccuracy. The actors are worth to see.

I was a little bit surprised that you did not mention the OTHER movie in which Fonda played Admiral Chester Nimitz, Otto Preminger's epic In Harm's Way from 1965. Granted, it was not a big part...more of a cameo...but considering the significance of the film, maybe it was worth mentioning? Also, I know you mentioned Fonda's Tony Award winning part in the Broadway play of Mister Roberts, but the movie version from 1955 was also a huge hit, and is one of my core memories from my youth...that and the Caine Mutiny...so I feel like that was something to highlight as well. I guess I am picking a few nits...just a couple of items I would have tried to find space for...but you did a great job no matter what my nitpicker says, so thank you for spreading the word about one of the greatest American actors.💯👍

Hi W & T, Didn't FDR, Jr die of a heart an MI (heart attack) on D-Day? I know he was suffering from RA (rheumatoid arthritis) so that waiver was required not just for age, but also for disability. (His son Quinton was name for a brother, who I think was KIA in WW1.) Thanks much!
TR, Jr. died of a heart attack on July 12, 1944 and he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on September 21, 1944 for his actions on June 6, 1944. And poor Quentin Roosevelt. He survived the war but died in an air crash at 29, only 9 years older than his namesake uncle.
BG Theodore Roosevelt landed on Utah Beach, not Omaha. He was assistant Division Commander of the 4th Infantry Division and had served as the assistant Division Commander of the 1st "Big Red One" Division in North Africa and Sicily. He was not a professional soldier but was incredibly brave citizen soldier who was too old and too sickly to really fight in World War II. That being said his Medal of Honor was 100% well deserved. He was a true American Hero.
He could still have served in a rear capacity. His own favorite director basically called him a coward. I don’t know why the guy who runs this channel won’t touch this topic?
John Wayne's case is hard to pin down. On one hand, he was 34 at the time of Pearl Harbor and classed 3-A for having a family so he wasn't subject to the draft. On the other hand, Fonda was 36 with two children on December 7, 1941 and still managed to join up. Later Wayne was reclassified 1-A but at 35 with no previous military experience, he wasn't any branch's ideal choice for conscription and Republic Pictures lobbied to keep him in movies. He also made a modest but unsuccessful attempt to join the OSS probably because of John Ford's connection to it. As far as I can tell, Wayne didn't try all that hard to either join or avoid the service and instead passively let others make the decision for him.

I think 1 of Fonda's most memorable roles was as Abe Lincoln in Young Mr Lincoln.

I liked that movie but turning the Ardennes into a desert scene took quite a bit out of it.

'Battle of the Bulge' was one of the worst war movies I've ever seen.
Maybe so, but I remember watching it on TV with my father who fought in the Ardennes so it will always be meaningful to me.

I just couldn't reconcile the desert battle scenes with the fact the battle was fought in a snowy heavily forested area.
Its an entertaining film but you can't take anything too seriously.
Compare this to cowardly John Wayne who was a terrible draft dodger.
Wayne blew up his knee in college. He couldn’t serve for that reason.
