I'm from Sheffield and I used one of these everyday for my work. I worked in a fabric mill in Huddersfield for 2.6 years. I lived in the Mill and used it everyday for cutting fabric, opening large packaging as well as food preparation and as cutlery. I love it it was my EDC however although the mine is exceptional and I collect John Nowill Bowie knives, in fact I bought one today from a antiques market in Sheffield from the 1840s. Just be warned the one I have which is like yours got stained with blood from a eating a Steak with is and that's it my friend. It's permanently stained. look after that blade it's a very important piece of UK heritage. John Nowill were granted the right to make knives by the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield on 27th April 1700.So that blade has over 300 years of heritage embedded into its spirit. Take good care of it and it will show you more than a lifetimes worth of loyalty, use and friendship. Congratulations on such a magnificent choice of Sheffield Steel.
Cracking stuff. If I was wealthy, I could make myself poor again just from collecting the Sheffield made tools. I love 'em. Definitely love to see your thoughts on the others shown briefly at the end. Cheers👍
I have the same knife. Bought from a hardware store NWales about 1980. The pins on sheath though brass and sheath much lighter colour. Remember my dad giving it to someone to sharpen properly still near razor sharp. Think knife cost about £10 at the time. Used it occasionally for camping trips, its near mint and is retired now. Great knife and arrrh made in UK. I still have smaller version somewhere think about 3 Inch blade. Yes quality knives certainly back in the day. Think they expected the buyer then though to get a decent edge on their knives themselves which can be obtained if you know what your doing I do now ..😅😅
I just ordered one today from Sheffield Knives. I had one in Oz 35 years ago and being Australia it was stolen. I wholly agree with your philosophy regarding our knives as opposed to buying Asian junk. I have very well made ( leaf springs) Parangs from Borneo ( supposedly taken three heads...?) my son has a hand me down Katana from WWII and as you stated it is perfectly proper to get original knives from the countries of origin. But our knives too often ( apart from a few FS) take a back seat to KaBar's and more contemporary stuff. Solingen is also another field l am particularly interested in, particularly hunting knives. Thanks for your vids.
I feel like Sheffield knives makers have problems with distribution to mainland Europe. Hence almost no European retailers sell them. Quite a few knife collectors don't even know about Sheffield made knives, just like how many don't know Albacete.
You been keeping ok mate? This one isn’t my cup of tea, but I don’t hate it. I’m also in two minds about these knife less multitool’s. If the tools on them after designed to be used as knives how can they do you for it? Would it stand in court? And on the ones with non locking blades which are in between the handles, how is that locked? Locked would be locked in one fixed position or angle. So because a SAK can’t close when your holding it for them make it a no? It just doesn’t make sense.
As an Englishman, I bought a John Knowill bowie Knife expecting great quality. They sent me a knife with a severely bent blade. I returned it due to it being defective. They charged me a restocking fee. Absolutely abysmal. Will never buy a Sheffield made knife again.
Wow that's really bad, painful to read even, I really try to buy British made as much as possible, and believe me as a Scot that kinda hurts(nothing is made here so English is the next closest thing). My mate bought a Sheffield made tennon saw, and it too was bent, that said most of the Sheffield made stuff I've bought is been good, not great, but good. I really like my John Nowill Bowie, nothing wrong with me, said to here to food a banana, even worse that they chat you a fee!
I just received the blade blank for this one and Im planning to give it a more classic shape. With a symmetrical crossguard in German silver. Handle material will probably be Moose antler. But I have to see how exhausting it will be to file the hole for the stick tang into the bone. I may give up at some point and use wood instead. lol
Where you been man! Keeping well? See on the RIF stuff, I remember you said once you have one you can sell to who you like as it’s your private property. Some sites are saying the seller needs to check the buyer has a defence before buying. Not sure if that is true was just wondering our opinion on the matter.
