First solution: Stop using the word "influencer". These people don't deserve a title that inflates their ego like that. Call them what they are: Crazy people with an audience.
The wild part is that they’re not even acting embarrassed about being confused. Like for some reason this video and the comments have me thinking about learning that my family is well off even if paying for college and extensive medical bills is a strain on us. I volunteered at a food pantry during the pandemic and was actually shocked to hear that people would line up outside for hours in 95+ degree heat to get $20 worth of food. But like after the shock came like introspection and embarrassment. Maybe the first day on earth thing is an act for Shane but like if it’s not…he’s really missing the personal growth opportunities….everywhere…
@@Naokarma I mean the fact that they have an audience is literally what makes them influencers. whether you like it or not, they have influence on people
He was probably just a pampered kid who had food/items magically appear in front of him... Never paid attention to how it got there or what it actually was - his mom just presented it to him & he was none the wiser beyond the general idea of not being as spoiled as his peers. It may have just been a concept but not a significant part of his experience growing up... He didn't have to help shopping or cooking, didn't coupon w/ his mom, didn't deal w/ the parentification of worrying about money when you should get to be a child. That is honestly the most charitable explanation I have for why he doesn't understand anything about generic brands or discount stores or drugstore dupes - which is saying something, because it still paints him as an ignorant man baby.
Remember when Shane was freaked out there there was STORE BRAND/Generic food at the grocery store?? Like, are you kidding me? He’s full of it. Also, if he was “so poor” growing up, he’d KNOW what store brand or generic stuff is. He’s just desperate. That’s all. (I cannot roll my eyes hard enough without risking injury.)
Another TH-camr covering Shane’s videos, maybe it was Mika’s Rhetoric but don’t quote me lol, mentioned that going from poor to very NOT poor does something psychologically to you which makes sense imo. My mom when she came to the US was very good insecure, and only in the last decade or so has had more financial security and now buys TOO much food and cooks too much, we think as a sort of trauma response to not having enough. Shane’s videos lately have felt pretty classist against lower income folks, so maybe it’s like that where he’s lk targeting ‘poor people’ things? Because he’s so above it now lol (he’s also always just felt very ignorant to literally everything ever lol I feel like he’s never used google LMAO)
I work at Marshalls and it bothers me that they are saying “Why would they sell that” as if the store knows the condition of every single product on the shelf. If we find something that’s damaged, we get rid of it and legit throw it straight into the garbage. They’re forgetting that costumers can interfere with products on the sales floor before it’s sold
The realistic answer is "if someone buys it, they'll return it and it'll be destroyed" or "if someone doesn't buy it, they'll find it's been opened & destroy it." That star ALSO looks like it changes from scene to scene?
I was thinking this same thing. When I go to any similar store such as TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, Burlington, etc., there is plenty of product that has either been used by customers in-store, or a customer may have dropped a pallet and that is how the product was damaged. The fact they think employees are putting returns back on the shelves when there are much easier explanations, and possibly even making people sick for this absolutely ridiculous idea makes me wish he would get sued.
@@strayiggytv I know ville (sorry, not ville) from other places, definitely seen them doing bot-y things before. But I think binklesprinkle was just playing along haha
I think the REAL reason it never got shared before is that Jeffree wasn't nearly ambiguous enough when implying it was OTHER influencer brands that were low quality doing it, so shane decided to scrap it because he was worried about being sued.
I mean the 2nd makeup box he bought's inside was clean when the returned one's inside was dirty, the edge of the returned one was also slightly ripped and the 2nd one did not have that rip. Also the star was drawn differently and placed in a different spot, this is absolutely factual and provable by Shane's own video. He staged it with a pretty lackluster attempt and provided all the video evidence himself. The star being drawn differently is indisputable. So the fact he staged it and passed it off as real absolutely is something he could be sued for, though he purposefully did not name the store so obviously nothing will happen(and nothing would happen regardless because nobody cares). @@habeashumor9814
watching this for the first time rn: the box he wrote on at home was dirty and covered in product. the box he got from the store with the star inside was perfectly clean. there's no way it's the same box, this is absolutely staged lmao
i love how hes soooo afraid of being sued for "testing a theory" when actually the real reason he would be sued is because he straight up lied and made up false claims about this store. The boxes are completely different, he just redrew the star. You can tell be the first box, the one he returned is dirty as hell and the one he purchased is completely clean of makeup. like THATS why he could be sued.
This is like those kids channels that stage all these crazy things that happen to them and sell it as completely real (A Monster in their pond, abandoned safes in secret rooms, Stalkers threatening to delete their channel unless they solve these riddles three...) It's completely scripted acting but they pretend they're vlogging and that it's real because it's entertaining... Except unlike the kids channels, this is actually spreading false information about real businesses. And on one hand we can say boo hoo, poor big corporations, it's not like they'll go out of business or anything, but on the other hand it is probably legally considered defamation, and it stokes fear in consumers. It's so weird.
I've replied to a few comments now about this but Shane actually did return two different palettes a pocket palette from sephora and one from Anastasia. Jarvis did edit it a bit odd so it looks like the box from Anastasia belonged to the Sephora one. The Sephora one was way cleaner in the box. However, Shane did show that both of the palettes was put up on the shelves again and he bought them, and it is the exact same palettes with the exact same stars this part isn't "fake". If this actually happened, I've no idea. He didn't show any proof that they returned it so he could've staged and actually just act like "look what I just found in the store". It all went very quickly so I'm more inclined to believe that he never actually returned them in the first place.
Here’s the thing that really upsets me about Shane’s video: his original theory is that “high-end” makeup stores (i.e. Ulta, Sephora, etc.) are selling used makeup to discount stores, but his entire video is based around discount stores allegedly re-stocking returned & used makeup. His “experiment” does nothing to prove his theory. Also if he had just, idk, *spoken* to retail workers at these “high-end” stores, he would have found out that they literally destroy the makeup in-house. My sister and friend worked at Ulta. Anything that was opened/used was destroyed by the employees. Idk their policies for unopened/sealed products. There are literally entire dumpster diving communities based around going to these makeup stores and getting expensive makeup from their dumpsters.
Makeup isn't my field but even at staples and Lowe's, if it's unsellable they just destroy it. They don't care enough about product loss to try to restock bad goods. They'll break it even further so no one can use it.
I wish they would sell these with a warning that actually it's pre-opened or something but I know they'd be legally liable but it just feels like a terrible waste to produce so much trash :/
I assumed his theory was going to be based around how some brands require written off stock to be returned so they can keep track and dispose of it. The store I worked at where I was in charge of writing stuff off didn't sell make-up, but we had to do it with certain food products. We weren't allowed to reduce the price and we couldn't dispose of them in our garbage. The manufacturers were really strict about making sure nothing left the store unless it was sold at the price we'd agreed with them. I figured he'd found out some make-up brands had the same policy and jumped to conclusions, but no, I apparently gave him way too much credit.
yeah, i'd imagine most big companies are like this. just throwing away returned (used) products basically doesn't affect their bottom line at all, considering their profit margins. the bigger scandal should really be the amount of waste they produce, or how wide their profit margins are when production cost of each item is like $1-5
@@icephoenix174we do the same thing at HomeGoods, if it’s even a little sharp after it breaks we aren’t allowed to sell it, so we smash it and throw it in a bin after we zero it out from the system

This is definitely targeted to TJ. If i remember correctly Jeffree used to be obsessed with shaming other brands for "stooping low" and having stuff for sale there because it was below him. Suddenly he is in hot water and his pallets show up in TJ 👀. The two of them are clearly mad, lashing out at the stores, and making up a story about how they got in TJ "without them knowing". Its hard to watch them scramble
yep!!! the whole “stopping low” point is so deeply classist. also note how jeffree in the vid side steps any part of dealing with TJ blaming third party sellers. to be honest, I have no idea how the palettes actually end up at TJ. But it is useful to him to blame others if he still thinks TJ is beneath him (which, like, clearly he does based on this vid.)
Hi, he’s not talking about getting legally sued. He’s talking about getting Sue’d. It’s a common mistake. Basically, Sue from Glee shows up at his house when he’s been naughty and screams at him, in other words “Sue’d”. He’s also saying “ConSUEmer” not “consumer”. Hope this helped x
I’m sorry can you elaborate a little more please? Is there a video of this “sue” yelling at home or something, I feel like this comment is a hidden gem but I’m missing the point.
Hey, i worked at TJ maxx! I can add some input here that I worked on processing things as they came in! In 5 years, I have never seen a beauty product of any kind come in without the manufacturer seal. Meaning it was never opened and it was never resealed! They would get in GIGANTIC legal trouble for selling used products. Any time we had makeup returned, we damaged it out. What i will say about used products in our stores is that customers will touch things and swatch them CONSTANTLY. And our managers tell us we cant really even tell them they can't do that. We mark out when we can as we find it but Shane is so out of touch with how retail works and we dont know every little thing that goes on in our store, nor are we paid enough to care.
yeah I was just thinking, isn't the usual go to something like you have to damage it beyond use if possible as you're chucking it? Maybe that's Sephora I'm thinking of specifically but I would've guessed big companies like that would not only have to check for sealed items, they'd also have to further damage the returned used stuff and throw it out to try and prevent dumpster diving (which is a horrible thought process but I know there's one big company that definitely does it, I thought it was either TJ Maxx or Sephora). Weird side note but did you know its called TK Maxx here in the UK? I have no idea why. It's the same company, branding and all 😂
Ugh, management should set up a few designated tester products so it's not open season to swatch everything. Some locations do it, but I get that TJ Maxx isn't a beauty store so might not have the bandwidth to do that. But the laissez faire attitude some store management put on is disgusting. "Oh, who cares about tampering and stealing! As long as customers give us money, they can destroy our store and products!"
Came here to say this! He kept blaming it on the higher ups based on their “policy” . No they just don’t pay their employees enough or keep enough staff to care
@@SheilaDeBonisfr, if a store is selling makeup I think they should have a tester for swatching, a lot of makeup you NEED to swatch or else you will have no idea if it will work for you. Thankfully most places that don't have a tester end up with only 1 open one that everyone uses like a tester, but other times nearly all of them will already be opened. Better to just have a tester than a bunch of opened product or people having to return them and it just gets thrown away.
As a woman that buys most of her makeup at drug stores, there is no lipgloss that costs under $2, especially Loreal. Not even Wet and Wild have one that cheap so I don't know what Shane is talking about
What annoys me more about this "conspiracy theory" is that Shane has a vested interest in it. Considering he and Jeffree have collabed on makeup before, and the fact that Jeffree who still sells makeup is one of the largest influencers that supports Shane makes this feel more like a hit piece to try and make other makeup brands seem shady and prop Jeffrey's brand up as one of the "trustworthy" ones.
Yeah, there was a thing like that several years ago where some MLM HBA product was being pushed by using videos allegedly showing name brand hairspray or something where the label peeled off and there was labelling for another product underneath. The videos were either fake or they were just exploiting people's ignorance to the fact that sometimes manufacturers relabel existing unused overstock packaging materials instead of throwing it all out.
jeffree also used to denigrate other makeup brands for having their products stocked in discount stores, and subsequently got roasted by lots of people online when his own products started showing up there too. so his participation in this video feels like him saying "nooooo my brand isn't discounted because it's declining in popularity, it's a conspiracy!! the surplus products are getting mysteriously spirited away to tj maxx by the shadowy elites!"
What annoys me about shane testing the lip product dupe is he only tested initial application. People who actually care about makeup would also consider longevity, transferring, feathering, etc etc
Thats a good point I didnt think about, I just chalked it up to the EXACT same conspiracy with the food he already made. Like didnt you already learn this lesson between name brand and off brand? lol
I absolutely love that Shane and Ryland are implying that the makeup palettes getting messed up is 100% the employees fault and that the employees are purposefully selling gross products when everyone who has ever worked retail knows that customers are disgusting and filthy and messy and ruin everything when we're not looking
It was cut out in this video, which I’m not saying that this guy did it for any kind of malicious reason, most likely he just cut it out for the purpose of getting straight to the point, but Shane does say multiple times that he does not blame the employees at all, and he knows that they are just doing their job. (Not defending anyone, I just wanted to put this out there incase there are people that haven’t seen the original video)
shane actually does say multiple times he felt bad cuz they were nice, wasn’t coming after them, saying they prob don’t get paid enough to even care, etc. so no he does not go after the employees once.
What the hell are these copy paste replies. Agreed though on the gross customers though, I used to work at a TKMaxx in the UK, customers would frequently open and test whatever they wanted if they got the chance which meant the product would have to be immediately binned. We had someone permanently stationed in that area because customers couldn't help themselves
agreed, people who have never worked retail would be shocked at how straight up gross a lot of customers are. i work at target, and i automatically damage out any returned makeup, skincare, hair products, etc. even if it looks completely unused bc you really never know and i’ve seen some disgusting stuff in the time i’ve worked there.
Shane’s constant demonizing of poor people in his content, yet repeatedly claiming he’s used to be poor genuinely makes me sick. Dupes have existed since the dawn of time and everyone does it. From makeup to snack foods, it’s literally just business

Yeah, he always seems to frame it as if the cheap version is doing something shady/wrong, instead of pointing out that the additional cost doesn't go into making better products. Like in this video he literally says that L'Oreal owns YSL and then makes it that L'Oreal just wants to have dupes of the high-end product??
The luxury / non-luxury comparison makes me so mad. Shane swatching two red lip stains and then GASPING like it proves they are the same product is absolutely infuriating. 1 swatch tells us nothing about the quality of the formula or how long it lasts, or how comfortable it is to wear all day! Does it smear? does it pill? does it fade? All he did is act shocked that two different products are the same shade of RED!
His logic is like buying buying laptops from two different brands with the same specs and then concluding that they're similar because of a conspiracy and not because he brought the same fucking product from two different companies. Like genuinely what the fuck was he expecting when he brought two lipglosses that are the same shade of red? Was he expecting them to not be the same color? The thing that'd prove that they're the same product is if they were chemically identical but of course having a chemist analyze them would require contacting an expert and we know that Shane hates that.
And even if they are very similar, as someone with ties to the makeup industry, he should know what dupes are. They've been around since the dawn of time, like this is nothing new
I am a makeup artist, I have worked in makeup stores, I can tell you now anything that is damaged is thrown out BUT ALSO there is no way a package made of that material could be cleaned of that makeup, at all. Pigment from the shadows would stain the box and any cleaning (likely done with alcohol) would damage the box VISIBLY, so the only way they could have done this is to stage it (obviously) it's incredibly evident to anyone who thinks about it for more than 5 seconds
Also can we point out the obvious cut when they first bring them home right before showing one damaged? It seems to me that he was disappointed that they were fine and decided to destroy one since the video was cut right before the "reveal." Also, I called big freaking cap on a middleman stealing product and selling it to discount stores. No, admit your ugly ass blue lip gloss was a huge flop and no one wanted it. You can't show failure and obviously didn't want to lose money so YOU sold it to them. Allegedly!
The way you can tell it is fake is when shane drew the star on the inside of the box the edges were dirty, but when shane rips the box the inside is clean, now either shane or the store attendents took the time to clean the inside or it is fake.
i never thought i’d be getting this microscopic about pens, but apparently he drew a star on 2 palette boxes in the original video, but the one that he showed himself marking the box with-he did with a black fine liner or something similar. the star on the one he ripped open was blue pen, even if he marked more than 1 product with the star, I doubt that he would have done it with 2 different pens + only 1 pen is seen on the table in the clip, also he knew exactly where the star was in order to rip it, so even if he marked more than 1 palette I think it’s defs staged.
It’s almost like Shane had an exclusive makeup deal get cancelled prematurely and is now trying to “expose” the makeup industry as some sort of pitiful retaliation

My TJMaxx store's skincare and very small makeup section is disgusting. All opened, poked, prodded with items and if you go later these products are still there trying to be sold. I then see some TH-camrs in their stores and it's all clean with a really good selection of products to choose from. Some people in my city are disgusting creatures.
It's a smart move to give people the benefit of doubt. He can't proof it's fake definitively so by going for the best possible interpretation his critique has to be adressed instead of countering some claims about faking thus dismissing the actual point.
This is really aggravating. Shane clearly has never worked a minimum wage job. As a former Ross employee, me and my coworkers would definitely hunt for opened, used, and damaged products and take them off the floor. We try our best, but wtf you think we have all day? People do this all the time, literally there is not enough time in the workday to find all this shit around the store!
Hi there! Just wondering, if it helpful if customers pick up damaged or opened stuff and bring it up when they come up to pay? Like just to give it to the workers? I always want to do that but I feel like it’s bothersome
When I worked the makeup department in a big box/department store I know I always appreciated it when customers brought me opened, used, or damaged products. It would save me from extra rolling around the dusty floor. I could just throw them in a little bin and then when I finally had time later, scan them all out of inventory, give them their little tickets, etc. Obviously I can't speak for everyone, and I don't know if discount store workers (e.g. Ross) feel differently because they encounter it more frequently. The cashier doesn't have time to inspect it all. Again, not enough time in a workday.
also there was so much eyeshadow on the box that he returned. he def rewrote the star, the box he rips is so clean and never confirms it’s the messed up pallete?
Also I think the star itself looks slightly different. I think the star on the clean box is larger. It’s hard to be certain because immediately after drawing it Shane shakes the box and blurs it.
Shane marches into CVS with a camera crew, loudly announcing "I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!" and then proceeds to explain the return process to the blank-faced employee like it's the most scandalous thing ever.
If you compare the two stars he drew, those are completely two different drawings. Not to mention the first box was dirty, the one he bought was clean. He faked it so bad. The worst is that - based on the comments - people believe him, even those who claim to work in retail. Its absurd.
well.. if u watched the original video he actually drew stars in 2 differnet boxes, while this video just shows him drawing into the second (dirty) and revealing the first (cleaner). not saying we should trust everything from shane, but maybe try to have some facts straight before accusing of fraud?
just like @fepit100 said, he actually did return two different palettes a pocket palette from sephora and one from Anastasia.
The box he supposedly returned had makeup stains on the inside edges where he drew the star. The one he bought does not. The two stars are also entirely different. Yes, I took screenshots and compared them lol Shane is always so concerned with being sued, but I think staging this entire experiment to claim that discount stores put contaminated products on the shelves is more than enough reason for lawyers to get involved. Does anyone else feel weirded out that he's doing this to discount stores a few months after Jeffrey opened his own store? Regardless, as someone who sold his own makeup and is close friends with someone who sells their own makeup, this feels very gross and deliberate.
Yea. I had to go back to make sure as well. The first one was so stained. The weirdest thing is just. Why did he buy two of them? Did he come back and just not find it so he bought a new one to stage that he found it?
@@smolshayhis brain dead fans believe everything he says, his video was filled with lies, it’s crazy how he doesn’t show footage or audio of him returning it or of him going back in to find it, that’s how I knew it was fake asl
What’s crazy is that Sephora and Ulta have been proven to throw out all returned makeup that was opened. There’s so many videos of people who work there destroying it. I think the only reason that discount stores have such messed up makeup is that there are inherently less employees on the floor monitoring people. Like, have you seen the amount of Sephora employees? It’s much more difficult to open stuff. But, of course, Shane’s channel mostly runs on making up groundless conspiracy theories and trying to sell them to his audience that has stuck around
I work at tiny tj maxx in the Midwest for close to minimum wage and we’re even super strict when it comes to that stuff as well, nobody really even tries to return makeup and we have thorough audits on the product coming through as well as employees.
@@DouxBrume That’s good to know honestly. I always assumed that broken makeup just recently happened because every time you tell someone at tj maxx, they take it off the shelf! So it’s weird to me that people assume a company would purposefully sell gross or broken makeup
Also, sephoras and ultas have sample products to test pretty much everything in the store out, so there’s pretty much no reason to open up a product for sale unless you’re trying to steal it. A lot of people opening stuff in discount stores are trying to see what the product looks like vs trusting the color on the packaging, etc. that need is eliminated at higher end makeup stores
I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I’ve worked in makeup a lot throughout the years and it’s just thrown in the trash. They don’t sell it or recycle it. They are required to destroy it. Doesn’t matter if it hasn’t been opened yet, it still gets destroyed and trashed if it leaves the store. They won’t even let employees take them or anything let alone anyone else who could sue them for negligence with all the pathogens that could be spread via used makeup.
Also, when it comes to similar luxury product, it’s different quality. There’s about 6 or 7 makeup suppliers for all companies in the USA and this stuff is made in those giant containers. The pigment varies in these big containers so the higher pigment stuff will go to the more expensive brands who pay a premium for the best quality while the lower pigment stuff goes to more affordable brands. Hence why when he tested that dupe, you can see the pigment is much more rich and condensed.

@@foolishlyfoolhardy6004 Yeah. A few years ago an employee at Ulta showed the process they are required to do to destroy returned product and the internet got super upset about the wastefulness. Same with expired stuff, the stuff that’s going to expire soon is always pushed to the front and the new stuff is put in the back, it makes sense but also that’s why I pull from the back because that’s how we’re taught to stock at our store and vendors
God I hate the whole "i'm going to get in sooooo much trouble for this" shtick. He doesn't even get in lasting trouble for actually bad behavior. Give me a break.
I am so confused about why they were so worried about returning the makeup. They were at cvs, which has a 100% satisfaction guarantee on cosmetics, used or unused. I was a beauty adviser there for 8 years and can confirm we damaged out all used make-up and i went through the shelves all the time to pull used products to damage them out or turn them into testers.
I’m a former Sephora employee. We actually had an insurance policy for returned makeup and damaged products. It gets shipped to the company and they dispose of it. We were told that they recycle the packaging and dump the products. I’ve heard speculation that the insurance companies *might* resell to discount stores, but I honestly have no proof. Either way, I do know that the high end companies have a plan for disposing of products.
It's a major liability for them to resell and there's no logistical benefit for the third party to do that considering how product is shipped. Products are separated by flammability and type so they can be properly disposed of. Only folks that are trained to separate can do it and it's shipped off by Operations. I'm a current employee and sometimes things are so damaged or get damaged further after being tossed around in bins.
The more likely conspiracy here is that they're lying about the recycling part and it actually just ends up being dumped in a landfill somewhere in South East Asia.
My aunt used to dumpster dive a lot and you’d be surprised at the makeup they throw out, expired , all that (she’s wild). But she had a whole market of selling the make up to ppl TELLING THEM it was out the dumpster but bc it was name brand they didn’t care … but they throw out straighteners, ugg blankets , nice brushes and everything I can’t lie I’ve accepted some of her unopened dumpster goods lmaoooo
At the baby outlets they have cribs, baby bouncers and instead of donating they dead ass throw it in the trash and spray paint all over it I got a mini fridge I still use that works great they just painted on it and threw it out … that was like 5 years ago
@@lamia4511 right I had a baby and had NICE EXPENSIVE SWINGS !! like brand new they just spray painted the box and cut cords of stuff but my uncle is an electrician and can fix cords
I work at Target and our policy for makeup is literally: If its broken we sell it on clearance, if its a return we have an entire process where we have to ask them "has this been used, was it damaged when you bought it etc." and also, most of the destroyed makeup is 90% of the time TESTERS that WE put out for customers to use. We do NOT sell testers to customers and will throw them in the trash once they have been utterly destroyed or can't be sold anymore. Edit: to clarify, we do not sell makeup that has been opened or used. We will accept returns due to store policy but that makeup is typically thrown away after refunded. HOWEVER, If the product was returned the same say it was purchased and the product is completely sealed (I.e, Shrink wrapped + intact carboard) we will put it back on the shelves. I live in Australia so policies in the US will differ.
I live in Australia so Its probably different elsewhere but I think some stores do it here while others it depends what the product is ie, nail polish or completely sealed pallets @@amelias4016
L’Oreal owns so many companies. I learned this while working at Ulta. Just because a company owns another company, does not mean they sell the same products at both companies. Plus, the colors of those lipsticks may look the same, but the quality, packaging, and ingredients may be TOTALLY different
I previously worked for Ulta. All used products may be returned with a receipt but ARE destroyed, I had to do it personally several times. Lipsticks are sliced out of tubes, palettes are cracked and broken, tubes are emptied and thrown away with regular trash. Flamable items are sorted separately and disposed of in accordance with local laws. Companies don't want you to get their products without paying their set price. They're not reselling anything.
Yea. Did you notice how weird it was that Jarvis was acting like Shane's experiment was some horrible, unethical thing to do? I can't find anyone commenting about it, but I feel like he really misunderstood that whole thing. He was implying that intentionally returning a used product could negatively affect other consumers, but the entire point is that the store shouldn't be putting used items on the shelves to begin with. It's like he thinks that it's against store policy to return used items and that Shane was pretending they weren't used, but that makes no sense, because the whole experiment relies on the fact that the store accepts used products as returns. If the employees didn't know the items were used, then it wouldn't be some conspiracy related to stores knowingly selling used items, it would be about consumers tricking stores into accepting used items. Idk it just really bothered me that Jarvis was making such a big deal about returning used makeup in order to see if it would end up back on the shelves. It's bothering me that I can't find anyone else talking about this. It can't just be me who disagrees...
I love how Shane’s “I don’t want to get sued” started as just irrational, engagement-gathering buzzwords, and suddenly became more of a overly hopeful wish.
Ignoring the rest of the complete insanity that was the video, the irony of Shane and Jeffery being *_shocked_* that luxury brands are actually similar products to noname products really got me. Like that's literally the same marketing strategy they use for their products.
Oh, Shane wasn’t afraid of getting sued because he had a theory about the makeup, he’s afraid of getting sued for PURPOSEFULLY TAMPERING WITH PRODUCTS. Oh my God his second theory is literally just the store brand food theory AGAIN.
i remember a long long *long* while back that shane was exposed for being a cat fucker. is this true? if so, why are people still giving him attention?
Not only tampering with products, but COORDINATING ACROSS STATE LINES to get other people to tamper with products. That bumps it up to an FBI investigation. That's really serious. They should be fine because it SHOULDN'T be going back on the shelf, so it's not technically tampering. But if there was a scandal or something, goddamn he's gonna get in trouble.
I think he's more afraid of getting sued for accusing a store of putting returned products back on the shelf. I really don't think any of that is real. Initially, I thought he bought two of the same pallette, returned the one he hadn't messed with, and kept the one he did for the reveal, but if you look at the original pallette he bought, the box is so dirty and the box he bought back after supposedly just guessing is the right one is very clean
Didn’t he get in legal trouble with chuck-e-cheese? Around the recycled pizza theory? I feel like it was a cease and desist but idk if a legal battle ever came of it.
It's wild that he's going after discount stores, and not counterfeit makeup which is an actual issue that has the potential to be much worse for the customer. Discount stores you kinda know what you're getting into, you've gotta make sure it's sealed properly, not tampered with, etc... Counterfeit can look so close to the original but have ingredients that are sometimes not even legal to sell. That's a much cooler topic that's not punching down on overworked minimum wage employees and the people who shop in the store.
I was thinking the same thing, especially when jarvis mentioned sending stuff off to get it tested cause they've found traces of absolutely horrible stuff in counterfeit makeup and I would be interested to know if any of that potentially ends up in discount stores
JUST TO CLARIFY: Shane actually did return two different palettes a pocket palette from sephora and one from Anastasia. Jarvis did edit it a bit odd so it looks like the box from Anastasia belonged to the Sephora one. The Sephora one was way cleaner in the box. However, Shane did show that both of the palettes was put up on the shelves again and he 'bought' them, and it is the exact same palettes with the exact same stars this part isn't "fake". If this actually happened, I've no idea. He didn't show any proof that they returned it so he could've staged and actually just act like "look what I just found in the store". It all went very quickly so I'm more inclined to believe that he never actually returned them in the first place.
@@firecatskylar That's what I said though. Or am I misunderstanding? I said I doubt he returned them, and actually just walked out pretending he bought them again.
I worked at Ross for 5 1/2 years and we NEVER resold returned makeup. We threw that shit out immediately. Also, like.... if makeup gets tossed into a box with other stuff and transported on a truck, it's gonna look fucked up and grungy. We had to throw out perfectly good makeup sometimes because it was complety broken.
Which is ironic because the DC would just send us (Ollie's Bargain Outlet) all the damaged ones they noticed before shipping out to other stores (Ross, Marshall's, Wal-Mart, the usual suspects). As long as the package was 90% in tact they gave no shits and we'd basically make the call of what to mark off as too damaged or salvageable, the amount of things perfectly secured on the truck yet blatantly broken before it ever left the distribution center was a bit ridiculous. I get we would sell dinged up shit for a "low low price" but come on, a microwave that looks like someone kicked the glass in is a bit overboard. God I'm so glad I don't do that kind of work anymore, 2 years of POS, 3 of freight flow supervisor/warehouse manager, and 1 of store manager was enough for a lifetime. I mean who walks around with shit coming out of their pants and just flings it like they're kicking off a shoe, _seriously?!_ PTSD, man. :|
Im more baffled that Jeffree star is making tacky pink meat and lip gloss stores and people are supporting it? lol Also cant believe hes doing the NPC thing, thats literally peak pathetic to me, Im sorry >_
I really feel like the fact that Jeffree was adamant about his products never being sold in those discount stores and his makeup was recently found in them played a huge part in this. No real conspiracy on Shane’s part he’s just trying to make the discount stores look worse than Jeffree
As someone who has worked in this store, allbeit in Germany: it is almost impossible to keep people from just disregarding all signage and tapes and just ripping open the make-up... BUT we did not accept returns for any cosmetic products, earrings and some of course food items
Exactly like customers do what they'll do and depending on the company unless you're literally security you can't do anything about it. Just gotta let em (security) know and hope the weirdo is kicked out. It's usually not the employees fault if something on the shelf is damaged from some kid or Karen
The beauty industry is already a massive contributor to unnecessary environmental waste and overconsumption. Thanks for contributing to that problem more, Shane!
i worked in one of those discount store, and one of the task of the people working in that department was to check if the product was used. i mean ofc we don’t always know if something’s been used and we can’t control people from not testing those products. also we weren’t payed enough to check if every single thing had been used yknow
I feel like “what is the action they want?” Is a great way to summarise the problem with Shane’s videos. He always brings up a problem/issue that most people know about and make a big deal about it but he never presents solutions.
I've worked at Ulta for over a year, and any product that has even been a tiny bit open gets disposed. I spend multiple hours a week destroying eyeshadow palettes, dumping liters of $100 shampoo, and cutting cords on Dyson Airwraps so they CAN'T be used again. He literally could've just taken 5 minutes to call an Ulta and had his theory squashed.
@tay9813 I do agree that the appliances could be donated, but company policy tells us to cut the cords to prevent people (customers and employees) from dumpster diving and essentially "stealing the product".
@@CarlyNancy Exactly. I have to throw out products regularly that are "past discard", and they HAVE to be thrown out. They can't be sold (even if customers want them), they can't be donated, and employees can't keep them or else its considered "stealing". It sucks but its true
I already left a different comment but I just had to say that he literally has a different palette. Unless they cleaned the box, he totally bought a new one and put a star on it. The other box had so much product on the inside. And the stars don’t even look the same. Omfg 19:37
Shane and Jeffrey are appalling. And yes, you can get sued. I'm an attorney, if you do what they did, take products, open them, touch them, mark them and then put them back on the shelves you can get sued. It is not the responsibility of the consumer or manufacturer to test a store this way. A customer could claim that they used one of the opened products and then refer back to the video where they talk about licking the products and putting them in their asses and given the reputation of these two an argument could be made that the products were adulterated to some extent. I'm not sure how successful it would be and in all probability that type of lawsuit would be settled but it could be brought.
For Shane "growing up so poor" he really like... acts like he's never had a poor experience in his life. Yeah, the makeup at discount stores gets tampered with, that's super common, you have to be picky and careful when buying it. Anyone who like... actually shops there knows this? It's not a conspiracy, it's just another way for rich people to make fun of and shame people who aren't rich lmao like "ew you'd shop there...? that's so fucked up and gross" he's just out of touch and unknowledgeable
in his actual video at the end they talk about how they think it is a good thing for them to sell over stock products and stuff but even if someone’s poor they shouldn’t have to worry about getting eye infections when buying makeup and that’s what this video shows because many people might’ve not even thought about it
@@someoneidk5408 The video doesn't show anything because it's so obviously faked. And this fear mongering bullshit is exactly what the OP was talking about.
I used to work at target and occasionally worked at the customer service desk. When anyone returned makeup we would damage it out. We specifically had to put it in a plastic bag and zip tie it shut. Other damaged items that people returned would just go in a regular bin to be thrown away. But makeup items were different. We would send it off somewhere else to be properly disposed of.
I’ve been catching up on the sad boyz podcast lately while working and it broke my heart hearing you talk about how some comment telling you that you weren’t entertaining enough really got to you. I love your content so much, it makes me be able to relax and disconnect for a while and that’s really precious to me as I have generalised anxiety disorder and it can be hard for me to relax. Whenever you think what you’re doing isn’t enough, know that your videos help me immensely and that’s the biggest compliment I could give you honestly
L’Oréal owning YSL Beauty and Lancome is very common makeup consumer knowledge. My mom who isn’t part of an online beauty space and mostly just restocks her staple products was still aware of this fact years ago and clued me into it when I was a teenager. For Shane and especially Jeffery to act surprised by that information feels a little suspicious.
As someone who used to run the beauty section at TJ Maxx, there's literally nothing we can do about customers digging their grubby fingers into our makeup. No matter how much we police it, it still happens. I would spend hours of my day checking for fingerprints in pans and then destroying the products that had been touched. I am positive we missed some, but at that point it's up to the customer to return it if it's been used. All this to say, the products we receive are not used, or expired. And if you want to see the colors or check if it's been used, just bring it up front and someone will be happy to carefully open it for you!
This might be a stupid question (and I'm not trying to put the blame on the workers bc obviously that's not their decision to make) but why not have testers ?
@@lamia4511 not stupid at all! We never know what we’re getting at our store and often we only get one or two of something so having testers is really not possible. If you have to check a shade match googling or going to a beauty specific store (Ulta or Sephora) is your best bet!
@@lamia4511former tj worker. i never really got that either, but from my understanding, it’s because we’re considered a regular department store and nothing fancy like a sephora or something. walmart doesn’t have testers so why should tj maxx? another thing is profit. tjx is a very greedy corporation. if there’s money to be made they will make it. you lose profit by using a product as a tester. you could’ve sold that dammit!! 😂 that’s just my two cents though
@@lamia4511since the other person never responded (and idek if you’re gonna see this) i’m just gonna share my perspective as a Marshall’s employee (same parent company, same store rules, both TJ Max and Marshall’s are TJX companies yadda yadda) but we don’t get our products in a standard way like normal “stocked” stores do, we just get shipments that are decided on from the distribution center or whatever basically we’re not like Walmart or Ulta or whatever where we’re always going to have the same product in stock or even the same number of items even if we do get the same product again, we’re more meant to be like a “treasure hunt” mentality of like we might have it we might not good luck come back tomorrow 🤷 for example let’s say we got 5 Glossier lip glosses the first time we get them, if we open one as a tester we now only have 4 to be able to sell…but we might not get them again for a long time or tbh ever again…or say we get them again but we only get like 2 this time and it’s been long enough that we’ve already disposed of the tester…it doesn’t make sense to open one every time we just *randomly* get another shipment of this product in my store anyway (which is in a relatively small town so don’t take this as fact) i’m pretty much always okay with a customer asking me to open a palette or a cologne or something to look at/smell it or whatever if it means it won’t be destroyed by them trying to get into it themselves and swatching it or whatever because fr we have to dispose of used makeup products even if they’ve never left the store shelves like it’s store policy BECAUSE it’s unhygienic 💀
It definitely wasn't the same star. Did anyone else notice that the palette they showed getting ruined was clearly a different palette from the one they bought the next day? When he draws the star at 16:53, the inside of the box is pretty dirty with makeup dust. The one that they bought and ripped open at 19:36 has a completely clean box. There's no way that the inside of the box somehow got completely cleaned after they drew on it. So either they contaminated and returned multiple palettes (essentially guaranteeing that someone would buy a palette that they contaminated), or it was fake, they bought a new palette, obviously didn't find a star, drew a new one on, and staged the dramatic reveal later.
He bought two different makeup packages and drew a start in both, one was clean, the other was smudged. In this video he makes it seem like the one in the start is the same Shane ripped open at the end, it's not.
@@anominize5397 Exactly, which begs the question: did he return both palettes to give himself a higher chance of buying one that he had contaminated among the many on the shelf? This would mean that there is at least one more palette that he ruined still on the shelf that some stranger is going to end up buying. Or is it all staged? Is the palette that he ripped open one that he never returned at all, and he's just lying about finding it on the shelf in the store? In that case, he essentially framed this discount store of selling contaminated cosmetics. No wonder he was afraid of getting sued, because lying and essentially framing the store is something that could probably actually get him sued (and likely would if he did it to a larger brand store and not a discount store).
I worked at a place many years ago that sold makeup, anytime it was returned the system would alert you to throw it out and print out a receipt to attach to the item, you would not be physically able to sell the item again as it would not scan.
10:39 that’s 100% a test pallet they put out so you can see how the colors look on your skin. You swatch them on your hand. They also give you q tips to swatch with. I’m just a casual consumer and know that. Can’t imagine selling a whole make up collection and still being confused going into a Sephora or ulta.
I work at an ulta currently, And I can say for a fact that we do not reuse or resell makeup. Part of my job is to literally destroy the makeup that is returned at the end of the night. It'd be really weird and gross anyway if we sold the used stuff. Like i've had people ask if they can buy the testers for the products, and we have to tell them no, because it's gross lmao
i worked at marshalls for a couple years so we got a lot of high-end makeup brands that we sold for a cheaper price. none of it was used or expired, it was just extra product the manufacturer had that they needed to get rid of. for a while, we didn’t even accept returns of makeup, and customers got really pissed because if the product gave them a rash or something, they wanted their money back (i had to deal with so many asshole customers that couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t take back used makeup). we finally got the ok from corporate that we could accept the returns and throw them away. we never once put used product back on the shelves. if we had, customers very easily could’ve found out, gotten an infection, and tjx could very easily be sued. companies tend to avoid that like the plague.
oh ALSO about shane constantly saying “can we get sued?” depending on if he says something untrue that hurts the sales of the company, he absolutely can. when he said a few years ago that chuck e cheese’s serves used pizza, he could’ve gotten sued for defamation if it had a lot of negative impact on the company. if people completely stop buying makeup at tj maxx and they can prove that he staged this, he can absolutely get sued for defamation.
I'm really glad that you pointed out how expensive recycling is. Aluminum is actually the ONLY thing that is cheaper to reuse than make new. When you also consider how many harmful emissions are associated with recycling (such as from the trucks and plants), it turns out that recycling is not the noble, world-saving act that so many people think it is.
HAHAHA THE REVEAL OF THE STAR ITS SO BLATANTLY NOT THE SAMEEE the star itself is entirely different, the location is much lower, and the cardboard packaging ITSELF is way cleaner than the one he was holding when he wrote it...
As a quick note, the balance sheet is a list of assets and liabilities at a point in time. If you sell a product, have it returned and dispose of it then it’s not a loss on the balance sheet since there is no such thing as a loss. The balance sheet always nets to 0 (or balances) so there is no loss. Whilst the return would have a balance sheet impact of reversing the cash sale, it doesn’t create a loss. The loss would occur in the income statement where the cost of the item would be written off and increase the expenses of the company in the period of account.
As someone who works in the beauty industry let me just say: Used makeup that is returned gets damaged and thrown away. Unopened/unused returned product most likely goes back on the shelf. If it is something that is being discontinued or is overstock it will likely get sold to places like TJ Max at a discounted rate. Also, stores like Ulta and TJ Max end up with products on the floor that get messed up from people opening them and touching them, even if there are testers. There usually isn't enough staff to check the product and make sure it's not been broken or touched. Retail sucks, don't blame the workers for the customers coming in and making everything gross. We're the ones that have to clean up their mess. Shane's "theories" are fucking infuriating. Anyway, keep up the good work Jarvis.
I know like, does Shane think people are gonna accidentally buy a package that's obviously been ripped open? Or that the cashier wouldn't notice and just tell them to go grab a sealed one, because they're the same price and they don't gain anything by making you buy open products? No one patrols the shelves for garbage, they do that the next day when they restock shelves. Like no one is going to grab an opened product and see the eyeshadow all rubbed off and still buy it, Shane doesn't need to protect people from grabbing something without looking at it (or feeling it if they're blind). No one would buy something if it's been opened, the store isn't leaving that stuff there knowingly and hoping you buy it 😂 Also his beef with relabeling the same product as generic is so messed up. The entire generic brand setup is meant so that people who are poor have the right to purchase the same quality product as the rich people who obsess over brand names. Rich people have the right to spend $5 on a container of yogurt if they want to spend the money to look like they fan afford expensive yogurt. I don't care about the label, so I should have the right to just pay the actual market price of that quality of yogurt, $2, under the store label. Rich people aren't paying for better quality and if they ever learned or paid attention to reality they'd know that. We all get the same quality because all products, for rich and poor, are regulated strictly for quality. You can't give poor people bad quality food because they're paying less. Rich people pay for a label to tell other people how rich they are. It's the same with clothes, and shoes, $200 jordans fall apart as fast as a $40 pair of new balance, probably faster, you're paying for symbolism and imagery, there legally can't be a significant quality difference in products marketed for affordability, that would be a humanitarian crime lol
I worked at a dollar store... like, lowest of the low quality product. When we got returns - and yes, people will go out of their way to try to return something used that was literally a dollar - contaminated product is just flat out trashed. The stuff we put back on the floor we had to put in a section so people knew ahead of time it had been returned and never shit like makeup or food. This is just how it works in literally any retailer that sells products like this. Same reason why if you go to a hotel, they're required to trash the bathroom toiletries after you leave even if you never touched them. Even the least ethical companies aren't this stupid.
Honestly the thing with the make up boxes is even if it was the same box and not one with a star in a completely different spot, there's no guarantee that pallet inside is the same one. I used to work in a discount store that sold make up, and if we ever got spare packaging from something that was written off for any reason we'd probably end up taking the box and putting undamaged product inside - because the boxes get way more banged up than the products inside them.
as a retail worker who works at a discount store... the amount of stuff i have to throw out or discount every single day because people feel entitled to open it up and use it is so out of control we tidy the shop floor every single day so it's always a day's worth. i would absolutely believe that all the damaged products that they looked at on the shop floor were damaged that day or the day before if it wasn't visible from the outside. we are so busy and the shop is so trashed, we don't have time to open up every product and check it during tidy time 😭
As someone who works retail and deals with a lot of returns, general rule with makeup is if it's unopened, we can re-sell it, and if it is opened, it gets thrown straight in the bin
What is Shane’s deal with causing drama and egging on paranoia? Why’s he always trying to find something that isn’t there. He loves hurting people and businesses then plays the victim. He annoys me to no end.
I bought some skin cream at Walmart, and when I got home and opened it I saw someone stuck their finger in it. Then you know what I did? I returned it. That stuff just happens. Does Shane really think the store themselves are doing this??
He didn’t even try to make the ‘rebought’ pallet look like the one he returned. The inside of the box was clearly covered in makeup when he was drawing the star, and even though you can wipe most of it off, often times makeup, especially eyeshadow, is so pigmented that it won’t fully come off, but the box he ripped open was completely clean and void of pigment.
To be fair, he actually did return two different palettes a pocket palette from sephora and one from Anastasia.
@@josefinarivia that’s a good point, I didn’t think of, thank you. I still think it was staged, though. As someone who worked in retail, any form of bodily fluids(even tears and sweat) are treated as biohazards and we have to go through a priority disposal procedure anytime there’s a product that could be contaminated. I just don’t think many of the workers would think it’s worth the risk to loose their income because they didn’t want to scan a returned item as out of stock and dispose of it. Just seems really unlikely they’d put it back.
@@lennox_moss_ Absolutely, I agree with you!! I honestly think he never returned them but just said he did. It just felt so unrealistic that they put them up for sale again that fast.
now, i expect corporations to do everything to save a penny, no matter what damage it might do to their employees or customers. thats WHY this conspiracy is so fucking stupid. makeup goes on your face - on your eyes, lips...some of the most sensitive skin on your body. the danger of contaminated products giving a customer conjunctivitis ONE TIME is not worth trying to save 34 cents worth of eyeshadow. the second a customer had a complaint, these drug stores would sell out sephora and ulta and whatever as the suppliers of faulty makeup. why would any business ever bear a responsibility they could pass on? and because of that, why would these big brands EVER expose themselves to that risk?
I used to work in a “high-end” makeup store and I can assure you they take returned makeup and dump it. If it was taken home, it’s considered no good. We’ve even had warnings about fraudulent returns- where customers take out the brand pigments and replace them with lesser brands. Place I worked even had security cameras on the dumpster to stop any dumpster divers (seriously, that shocked me).
I’m pretty sure u can video tape a dumpster all u want but once it’s thrown away u can still take it out of the trash it’s not illegal, but you can’t go on private property to dumpster dive
@@littleguy8714 Not illegal, but probably a liability that could get the company in trouble if those are then sold by said dumpster divers with the brand names still on them.

I just want to say that, it's a common misconception that "oh in recycling they just burn and destroy the trash anyways so why should i sort my trash?" and throw it in the normal trash bin, but the thing is, sometimes the only thing you can do is burn it and you cant actually re-use it, but by sorting it, you can destroy the product responsibly using filters and systems to make sure that no harmful substances are leaked into nature or harm workers, or just end up in a land fill.

@@elizabethr.9359 like I know everyone who watches videos like Shane’s won’t fall into extreme conspiracy theories, but every extremist likely started with smaller, insignificant theories like the ones Shane talks about. What’s funny is that faking something like this, which it almost definitely is, is grounds for getting a lawsuit, especially since he had the shop in the background. The company can make a claim for defamation, I doubt they would waste their time on such a thing but they can.
Having worked at TJ maxx in high school, the managers know people open & use products in the store and that people return used products. They do not care and they try to minimize the amount of damaged goods they zero out. They will sell a half filled bottle of lotion “as is” just to make a sale. But they won’t sell you a broken piece of ceramic or glass.
The thing about the YSL one is absolutely unhinged to me. I highly doubt the formula is the same, and the pigments are likely different. At LEAST buy and show both products if you're going to make a claim like that. Expensive makeup isn't expensive for literally no reason.
Re: “Expensive makeup isn’t expensive for literally no reason.” I mean. Yeah, sometimes it is. Like how a t-shirt from a luxury brand can cost hundreds of dollars. Jarvis talks about it a bit in the video, and you can look into it elsewhere too if you’d like. I agree with the rest of your comment, I’m just unsure about the last part
@@VultureSkinsThe luxury version is usually still higher quality. The markup on luxury clothing is more or less the same as non-luxury, it’s just that making a shirt/etc for a dollar and selling it for ten is less alarming than making one for ten dollars and selling for a hundred.
His whole "I hope I don't get sued" thing throughout the video reminds me of "Escape From Tomorrow". The director was like "I hope Disney doesnt sue us, oh no guys, I hope it doesnt happen" because they were filming in the park and it was a whole selling point and then Disney never sought legal charges anyway because they didnt care or something.
I worked at Target and Kohl’s in customer service. One of the first things we’re supposed to ask when someone is returning makeup or skin care products and the like is “did you use/open this?” If they didn’t, then it’s ok to put back on the shelf since it hasn’t been used. If they did we’re supposed to throw it away because it’s contaminated
It's a huge pet peeve of mine when influencers behave as if it's their first day in the world, and shane is such a clear example of that
YES Mr. "I grew up poor" Dawson 😂
First solution: Stop using the word "influencer". These people don't deserve a title that inflates their ego like that. Call them what they are: Crazy people with an audience.
especially when it’s the most simple things EVER. beauty influencers see a product and gasp out loud when it does what it’s supposed to💀
The wild part is that they’re not even acting embarrassed about being confused.
@@Naokarma I mean the fact that they have an audience is literally what makes them influencers. whether you like it or not, they have influence on people
What’s wild is that Shane said he was poor growing up, yet off-brands seem to be a completely new concept to him
Maybe he just thought he was poor bc his mom didn't give him every little thing he wanted 😂
@@nikonradish if u find out who mentioned this please let me know bc i completely agree
Also alot of those look like testers... which always gets messed up.
Exactly!! He’s acting like the employees know that it is damaged and still put it up 😭
I was thinking this same thing.
I love how they have to make up a conspiracy to justify why Jeffree’s makeup ends up in discount stores lol
When he was talking about *his* expired makeup was sold to "discount" stores I could only think "sure Jeff, whatever makes you feel better."

Sharing a consumer experience won't get you sued... But sharing a consumer experience that looks completely faked might. Good job, P.I. Shane.
Could that be considered defamation?
This could also be considered product tampering which is a criminal/federal offense.
He has to make statements that are provably false. Otherwise he's not getting sued by any makeup company or retailer.
Ye$ thank you!!!
That’s exactly what I was going to say!! So obviously staged, they didn’t even try to make it look like the same box
Exactly, the stars not even in the same spot or the same shape, it’s way farther down and much skinnier
I was searching the comments hoping someone else noticed!
Exactly what I was going to say, plus the star is different and in a different place
i love how hes soooo afraid of being sued for "testing a theory" when actually the real reason he would be sued is because he straight up lied and made up false claims about this store. The boxes are completely different, he just redrew the star. You can tell be the first box, the one he returned is dirty as hell and the one he purchased is completely clean of makeup. like THATS why he could be sued.
the star also looks completely different, noticed that immediately. like it's such a bad and laughable job at lying i don't understand at all
If he legit got sued he'd just claim its for "exposing the truth" and his gullible, defensive audience of tweens would buy it.
i was looking for this comment! it's soooooo obvious

I know a bunch of people who've worked at Walgreens. They do the same there, accept they do tell customers they aren't allowed to test the products.

Cost varies by location...
every Shane conspiracy video can be broken down into "rich out of touch man discovers capitalism."
What annoys me more about this "conspiracy theory" is that Shane has a vested interest in it. Considering he and Jeffree have collabed on makeup before, and the fact that Jeffree who still sells makeup is one of the largest influencers that supports Shane makes this feel more like a hit piece to try and make other makeup brands seem shady and prop Jeffrey's brand up as one of the "trustworthy" ones.
isn’t shane the cat fucker?
Yeah, it reeks of a grifter telling you the air's full of poison so they can sell you air purifiers and supplements.
I was thinking the same
What annoys me about shane testing the lip product dupe is he only tested initial application. People who actually care about makeup would also consider longevity, transferring, feathering, etc etc
The more expensive version might do better in those categories

"this video could've been a tweet" is a wild sentiment, just career destroying and heartbreaking
I actually have a friend who works at TJ and she confirmed that their store will put returned makeup back on the floor.
agreed, people who have never worked retail would be shocked at how straight up gross a lot of customers are. i work at target, and i automatically damage out any returned makeup, skincare, hair products, etc. even if it looks completely unused bc you really never know and i’ve seen some disgusting stuff in the time i’ve worked there.

No, don’t you know that every makeup company is expected to invent a completely new color with every launch? 😂
And even if they are very similar, as someone with ties to the makeup industry, he should know what dupes are. They've been around since the dawn of time, like this is nothing new
And he's GASPING like it's a damn horror show. Like...dude. What's all that about
You can literally see the brush for the drugstore brand dragging more across his hand 🤣
The two boxes we see in this video are two different boxes!
This! You can clearly see that the first box is very dirty and the second one is very clean aside from the star. They just added a star to a new box.
Also can we point out the obvious cut when they first bring them home right before showing one damaged? It seems to me that he was disappointed that they were fine and decided to destroy one since the video was cut right before the "reveal."
Also, I called big freaking cap on a middleman stealing product and selling it to discount stores. No, admit your ugly ass blue lip gloss was a huge flop and no one wanted it. You can't show failure and obviously didn't want to lose money so YOU sold it to them. Allegedly!
Yeah, the boxes are different, the one he bought initially was dirty. They didn’t even staged this right.
So he's literally just making stuff up. That's so much worse than just ignorance on how retail works. Like actually malicious.
The way you can tell it is fake is when shane drew the star on the inside of the box the edges were dirty, but when shane rips the box the inside is clean, now either shane or the store attendents took the time to clean the inside or it is fake.
It's deeper into the box than the one he drew before, too. It's 100% fake.
It’s deeper into the box than the one he drew before, too. It’s 100% fake.
These bots are absurd.
And the star is way deeper inside, the original one was near the edge but the new one is in the middle, he faked it absolutely
i never thought i’d be getting this microscopic about pens, but apparently he drew a star on 2 palette boxes in the original video, but the one that he showed himself marking the box with-he did with a black fine liner or something similar.
the star on the one he ripped open was blue pen, even if he marked more than 1 product with the star, I doubt that he would have done it with 2 different pens + only 1 pen is seen on the table in the clip, also he knew exactly where the star was in order to rip it, so even if he marked more than 1 palette I think it’s defs staged.

I'd say general rules: just be polite and kind, and the worker will most likely know you're coming from a good place. @@shelby8101
@@emilyjaneexdefinitely not; a lot of these products require opening the outer box/sleeve to see if the container is sealed. has anyone ever made you open a package of something at the register? what if they're buying it as a gift and want it sealed? also, what if they're buying a bunch of items? The cashier doesn't have time to inspect it all. Again, not enough time in a workday.
Me at TJ Maxx for yearsss, so frustrating
also there was so much eyeshadow on the box that he returned. he def rewrote the star, the box he rips is so clean and never confirms it’s the messed up pallete?
Thank you! It’s driving me nuts 😂
That’s what I thought too! That’s a different box! There was so much powder on the one that he returned.
The guy has multiple working on these things and they can't even fake evidence properly.
YES!!!
Its absurd.
I came here to say this! The stars don't even look like they're drawn in the same location.
Thank you!!! I was thinking the same thing!!!
well.. if u watched the original video he actually drew stars in 2 differnet boxes, while this video just shows him drawing into the second (dirty) and revealing the first (cleaner). not saying we should trust everything from shane, but maybe try to have some facts straight before accusing of fraud?
thank you i was thinking the same thing! the original box was so dirty, they obviously faked this
just like @fepit100 said, he actually did return two different palettes a pocket palette from sephora and one from Anastasia.
The box he supposedly returned had makeup stains on the inside edges where he drew the star. The one he bought does not. The two stars are also entirely different. Yes, I took screenshots and compared them lol
Shane is always so concerned with being sued, but I think staging this entire experiment to claim that discount stores put contaminated products on the shelves is more than enough reason for lawyers to get involved.

My FIRST thought was that he faked it. I 100% believe he faked it.
Thank you for pointing out the (kind of) obvious. I was looking for this comment.
Shane is so disconnected from reality that it’s like watching someone that lived under a rock their whole life and just recently surfaced.
I 100000% agree with you! I feel like most of his audience now is just children who may be a bit, idk, gullible so they believe everything he says.
@@lochness_jenni6116 Exactly. He’s just exploiting the fact he has a gullible fanbase
@@agentshawnee You could see when he did the two swatches of the lip gloss that they were not the exact same shade. The coverage didn't seem the same either but that could be how he loaded up the applicator or did the swipe.

@@foolishlyfoolhardy6004 Yeah. A few years ago an employee at Ulta showed the process they are required to do to destroy returned product and the internet got super upset about the wastefulness. this is why it’s really common for people to pick the products in the back of the shelves instead of the front…. it’s not a conspiracy
Well, it wasn't until Shane Dawson got to it.
My most favorite part is him writing the star on a visibly stained box then finding the it on a clean one & expecting us to believe it's the same box.

I live in Australia so policies in the US will differ.
i also work at target and at our store we have to destroy all makeup returns, even if it hasn't been opened
I live in Australia so Its probably different elsewhere but I think some stores do it here while others it depends what the product is ie, nail polish or completely sealed pallets

L’Oreal owns so many companies. I learned this while working at Ulta. Just because a company owns another company, does not mean they sell the same products at both companies. Plus, the colors of those lipsticks may look the same, but the quality, packaging, and ingredients may be TOTALLY different
Those two didn't even look the same. They had different undertones so he really should've just lied about it that much more.
I mean they're both red lipgloss, of course they're gonna be red.

I was going to comment the same thing. The ripped box was completely clean and the star looked different. He also didn't show the "messed up pallette"
Exactly! I was also going to comment this.
not to mention the star was differently drawn and placed elsewhere lol
most (if not all) of his public conspiracy videos are staged.
Also it’s the same as Shane being surprised about off brand food in his other “conspiracy video”.

This
I think he's more afraid of getting sued for accusing a store of putting returned products back on the shelf.
The most unrealistic thing is that Shane thinks it would have been restocked that quickly.
^massively agree
But going after counterfeit makeup would require effort, and Shane's content is lazy af
I was thinking the same thing, especially when jarvis mentioned sending stuff off to get it tested cause they've found traces of absolutely horrible stuff in counterfeit makeup and I would be interested to know if any of that potentially ends up in discount stores
If it's jarvis johnson gold then I'm sold

I've worked at Ulta for over a year, and any product that has even been a tiny bit open gets disposed.
For Shane "growing up so poor" he really like... acts like he's never had a poor experience in his life. in his actual video at the end they talk about how they think it is a good thing for them to sell over stock products and stuff but even if someone’s poor they shouldn’t have to worry about getting eye infections when buying makeup and that’s what this video shows because many people might’ve not even thought about it
@@someoneidk5408 The video doesn't show anything because it's so obviously faked.

Jeffery definitely knew this information, he keeps an eye on his competition.
If you have to check a shade match googling or going to a beauty specific store (Ulta or Sephora) is your best bet!

basically we’re not like Walmart or Ulta or whatever where we’re always going to have the same product in stock or even the same number of items even if we do get the same product again, we’re more meant to be like a “treasure hunt” mentality of like we might have it we might not good luck come back tomorrow 🤷

in my store anyway (which is in a relatively small town so don’t take this as fact) i’m pretty much always okay with a customer asking me to open a palette or a cologne or something to look at/smell it or whatever if it means it won’t be destroyed by them trying to get into it themselves and swatching it or whatever because fr we have to dispose of used makeup products even if they’ve never left the store shelves like it’s store policy BECAUSE it’s unhygienic 💀
Correction, We destroy the makeup that has been tested and then returned. We don't throw out the unused stuff that people have returned.
Why would anyone want to buy a tester 🤢
@Hannah-zw9ow who knows dude.....
i worked at marshalls for a couple years so we got a lot of high-end makeup brands that we sold for a cheaper price. none of it was used or expired, it was just extra product the manufacturer had that they needed to get rid of. for a while, we didn’t even accept returns of makeup, and customers got really pissed because if the product gave them a rash or something, they wanted their money back (i had to deal with so many asshole customers that couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t take back used makeup). we finally got the ok from corporate that we could accept the returns and throw them away. we never once put used product back on the shelves. if we had, customers very easily could’ve found out, gotten an infection, and tjx could very easily be sued. companies tend to avoid that like the plague.
oh ALSO about shane constantly saying “can we get sued?” depending on if he says something untrue that hurts the sales of the company, he absolutely can. when he said a few years ago that chuck e cheese’s serves used pizza, he could’ve gotten sued for defamation if it had a lot of negative impact on the company. if people completely stop buying makeup at tj maxx and they can prove that he staged this, he can absolutely get sued for defamation.
I'm really glad that you pointed out how expensive recycling is. Aluminum is actually the ONLY thing that is cheaper to reuse than make new. When you also consider how many harmful emissions are associated with recycling (such as from the trucks and plants), it turns out that recycling is not the noble, world-saving act that so many people think it is.
shane spends half an hour exploring the impoverished shopping experience
HAHAHA THE REVEAL OF THE STAR
ITS SO BLATANTLY NOT THE SAMEEE
the star itself is entirely different, the location is much lower, and the cardboard packaging ITSELF is way cleaner than the one he was holding when he wrote it...
Dude is just middle class-LARPing and then acting like it’s completely insane, it’s so weird. He’s displaying how out of touch he is and has no idea
I can’t wait to get to the bottom of what is sure to be the most dire and dangerous of conspiracies from the most trustworthy source!
No one would buy something if it's been opened, the store isn't leaving that stuff there knowingly and hoping you buy it 😂
Also his beef with relabeling the same product as generic is so messed up.
Really?
I was never told to do that so didn't trash them.
Honestly the thing with the make up boxes is even if it was the same box and not one with a star in a completely different spot, there's no guarantee that pallet inside is the same one. I used to work in a discount store that sold make up, and if we ever got spare packaging from something that was written off for any reason we'd probably end up taking the box and putting undamaged product inside - because the boxes get way more banged up than the products inside them.
as a retail worker who works at a discount store... the amount of stuff i have to throw out or discount every single day because people feel entitled to open it up and use it is so out of control
we tidy the shop floor every single day so it's always a day's worth. i would absolutely believe that all the damaged products that they looked at on the shop floor were damaged that day or the day before if it wasn't visible from the outside. we are so busy and the shop is so trashed, we don't have time to open up every product and check it during tidy time 😭
As someone who works retail and deals with a lot of returns, general rule with makeup is if it's unopened, we can re-sell it, and if it is opened, it gets thrown straight in the bin
18:49 made me cackle cuz… like you went inside that store to find the product you tampered with, and you don’t even check if it’s the one? Bye-
now, i expect corporations to do everything to save a penny, no matter what damage it might do to their employees or customers. thats WHY this conspiracy is so fucking stupid. makeup goes on your face - on your eyes, lips...some of the most sensitive skin on your body. the danger of contaminated products giving a customer conjunctivitis ONE TIME is not worth trying to save 34 cents worth of eyeshadow. the second a customer had a complaint, these drug stores would sell out sephora and ulta and whatever as the suppliers of faulty makeup. why would any business ever bear a responsibility they could pass on? and because of that, why would these big brands EVER expose themselves to that risk?
And then paying all the staff off so they don't tell anyone. Or paying a lawyer to draft NDA's
Friend and i used to dumpster dive higher end beauty store in highschool 💀 embarrassing to look at now but we were just bored teenagers trying to push out luck 💔
@@mjg-98not embarrassing at all most kids have done it
@@Niobesnuppa well makeup and clothing stores tends to ruin their products when they throw them away, but i have known people who dumpster dive food from a bakery and it was just stale bread so no harm there
I just want to say that, it's a common misconception that "oh in recycling they just burn and destroy the trash anyways so why should i sort my trash?" and throw it in the normal trash bin, but the thing is, sometimes the only thing you can do is burn it and you cant actually re-use it, but by sorting it, you can destroy the product responsibly using filters and systems to make sure that no harmful substances are leaked into nature or harm workers, or just end up in a land fill.
I’m so happy some creators I watch are continuing to critically cover these videos. I know conspiracies seem like spooky harmless fun, but it’s a pipeline to pretty dangerous, hateful, extremist beliefs. When you’re getting millions of views, you should be aware of the psychological effect you could have on your audience.
The article “Are Conspiracy Theories Harmless?” from Cambridge University Press discusses this if anyone is interested.
Thank you! Every time I see people promoting seemingly harmless conspiracies I just think about how many people are getting primed to question legitimate science and get sucked in to something like qanon
@@elizabethr.9359 like I know everyone who watches videos like Shane’s won’t fall into extreme conspiracy theories, but every extremist likely started with smaller, insignificant theories like the ones Shane talks about. It’s a slippery slope, especially these days with the abundance of fake shit on the internet.
What’s funny is that faking something like this, which it almost definitely is, is grounds for getting a lawsuit, especially since he had the shop in the background. The company can make a claim for defamation, I doubt they would waste their time on such a thing but they can.
I mean they should. Shane needs to face consequences for his lies. Actual consequences, not being shamed on the internet.
@@charlieseenI agree. Shane acts like his actions don’t have real world consequences. He needs to see how his actions can effect him.
@@ZackC Yes! There is a video of Marlena Stell where she explains the prices, I highly recommend it.
“It’s something we’ve kind of all been aware of our whole lives” can describe every Shane conspiracy video and his podcast tbh
