  • After returning the Uniden dash cams that had issues with the Android app (since corrected) we bought 2 Navman MiVue 150 dash Cams.
This is a look at the features ans my views on the performance of the cameras in daily driving.

Thankyou for this absolutely fantastic step by step video which instills confidence in the non tech savvy me. I don’t understand why I need the camera to capture licence plates when I can do that myself using my eyes and a notebook- provided I am not in too much shock? For me this seems good enough to capture others smashing into my car to surely be proof enough that I am not at fault. I don’t understand the need for an average driver to need more- am I missing something? When is enough enough?

In the heat of the moment, especially in something like a hit and run, capturing a license plate could be useful. I think these cameras should be capable of doing that as I can mount a $100 second hand GoPro Hero 3+ and get the expected result. We also bought the next model up hoping for some improvement but the resulution was just as bad. It isn't a deal breaker but it is dissappointing.

I have the Navman mivue 870, which comes with a USB C connector/power cable.

Yup we recently got one of those too and it is a much better unit although the stick on mount makes it less versatile for moving between vehicles.

Useful insight thanks. I've been thinking about getting a DC for awhile but didn't think I could handle the technology. You've given me confidence to have a crack. Seems they're important in insurance claims these days.

Do you happen to know whether Jaycar (or anyone really) in Rockingham has 120H Anderson connectors. Repco has 50A and 175A, the latter is ridiculously huge for my needs,

Sorry, I don't know about 120s as I have only used 50a connectors.

1080p is 2K. The resolution is the problem, not the camera.
I think the cops will be pretty happy with that, they should be able to identify the vehicle through make, model, colour and even a partial match.
Some cigarette lockets are always live. Mine would be dedicated to charging cameras and a phone. I could dedicate a power bank port to it, the power bank would hardly notice its presence.

Depends on who you listen to I think. What I mean with 2k is 2560x1440 which I should have called quad HD to be more technically correct. 2k seems to have quite a wide definition. 1080 should be good enough but these cameras aren't even close to the resolution I get from DJI gear filming in 1080. I suspect the sensors are to blame. True some ciggy sockets are always live, we have one in the Coaster but for most people they are reliant on the ignition being on.

@@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen 4K is 3840x2160, QHD (Q for QUAD) is 2560x1440, FHD is 1920x1080, and there are the lesser qHD (q for quarter), HD, SD.
C4K is Cinema 4K. 4K is alsu UHD.
I prefer to go with 1080p (or 1080p25 adding the frame rate), 2160p, 1440p etc. It doesn't distinguish between C4K and 4K, but I see no merit to C4K for TV and TH-cam because the consequence is letterboxing.
The Australian standard for TV is 1920x1080p25, and that's what Australians should ordinarily shoot to. Everyone except Yanks, Japanese, South Koreans.

@@oneeyedphotographerI much prefer the pixels plus frame rate as you suggest. It removes any doubt about what the resolution really is. We mostly shoot in 1920x1080p 50 because I just don't see the need to go any higher.

    Great video Marc.
I wouldn't buy one of these based on the cable alone, but thanks to your video I definitely wouldn't touch one thanks to the ultra crappy resolution of it.
    Thanks Marc.

UPDATE: After driving around with the camera on for a few days we have noticed that the speed camera warning has activated on a couple of occasions so this does appear to do what the blurb says it should.

    7:52 Why?
Most of the device I want to charge support PD. I think my phone does Fastcharge.

Ah, it states in the maual that it should be used with 1 amp connection so I am just parroting that - I have no idea why myself :)

    • @oneeyedphotographer
      @oneeyedphotographer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen The manual is probably wrong. Even the highest power USB chargers should work, the dumb old devices will draw what they need and newer ones will negotiate more volts and more amps.
